Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:
Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

ok like the idea of trying to expand the possibilities but text chat? you could just send messages back and forth. i think what you need to do is get ingame voice chat were you and your friends can all play different games and still be talking to one another. kind of like what the Xbox 360 has to offer. another thing for the future, i think the trophies are the best thing that was added the the psn, ive got over 600 trophies but i would like to see some kind of reward for them, maybe themes for your profile card. voice messages would be a huge plus also.

I know this is a Sony blog and some of you guys are freakishly obsessed with Sony and think that people who comment on xbox are sick and twisted. :-)
But for less than an American dollar per week live provides everything ye’re asking for and 5 times more! Look I love my ps3 and I believe eventually online it will be as good as live but that’s going to be a long time away. Ps3 wins hands down for media! It’s amazing. But if your a gamer and your serious bout online live is the best on the planet’

Quit dragging this out longer than it has to be. Its like they starve us of features and options and then give us crumbs and some people think its great. Had this thing over 2 yrs, the only impressive thing I’ve seen is 1080p Blurays. I bet they have all these features on seperate discs, and say to each other….”What crappy update should we give them this month?”

In-game VOICE chat is a MUST have for any current generation system (and any future system). I was thinking about buying the chat pad for HOME, but definately will not now. How can you use your chat pad in-game? It covers the L1 R1 buttons.
I want to see Sony post a blog about the feedback they’ve received from this blog. 1500+ comments deserves attention !

I’m really pleased to see Sony supporting the PS3 so well. Most of the complaints people had about the Playstation 3 at launch have been effectively silenced over time.It’s unfortunate, however, that so many potential PS3 owners that I’ve spoken to aren’t aware of the many updates it has received. I really hope to see the firmware development team try to squeeze voice chat in, though…

The next update should be focused on trophies. All the new features are ok. The best one to me is the extra 3MB for sending attachments. The in-game text feature is aggravating. That should of just been another chat option in the chat room. I have to keep constantly pausing the game just to keep a chat going. When comes to online play, I don’t even try to attempt that. If try to text chat while playing a game like KZ2, you are bound to get shot. Easy target. This feature I don’t care about too much.
Text messaging might be a joke but…
I heard that censorship is being applied irrespective of the language, perfectly spanish non offensive sentences get massacred…LOL

How about being able to listen to music while you’re playing a game? I know you can do this on the 360; don’t think its an option on the ps3….

Sony does need to be careful about technology that’s already implemented or even if it’s not. There are tons of patent trolls out there. Patent laws, as well as copyright laws have become antiquated and it’s a horrible mess right now. While I don’t know how far along Sony is in this regard, I agree it’s probably best not to go plunging full steam ahead if the patents issue isn’t straight.
BTW, Live is $50 a year. If anyone wanted to donate some annuals funds Sony could probably speed up its development. ;)

Why don’t you focus your time and energy on delivering an update that actually matters and people will use, like party VOICE chat.
Although my mates and I did figure out a sweet work around to your glaring oversight the other day and managed to get a voice party chat channel working on the PS3! All we had to do was turn our Xbox 360s on and create a party chat in there, then simply switch the input on our TV’s and AV receivers so we could actually see what was happening on the PS3. Awesome! Top work Sony!
Sony it’s time to suck it up, stop being so arrogant, and admit your being slapped in the face by your competitor’s wang and copy their blueprint almost verbatim. Start charging for it if you have to! I will happily pay for a quality service rather than this shell you’re currently serving us.

well the 50 dollars per year isn’t bad what about having two options kinda live and gold..psnetwork basic the free and ps network pro in that one you have more goodies but you must pay 49.99.

my suggestions are
when u push ps button for battery should be under time.
when writting a letter to someone and the internet acidently kicks u off, u should have some where to store it so u can send later.
when u go into your messages from your freind and want to delete them can u make a multiple delete button please.
is there anyway u can play your own music over any game please… the X Box 360 does it
when in psp remote play could u make option to have different picture then just black screen.
can u make other moving screens for main backround… mabe release editor to make your own.
i know u just put the text chat in new update but could u make writing longer before u have to push enter its just kind of anoying to push enter for just 3 or 4 words.

Some good suggestions, just wanted to comment on the usb mic, for me works, the problem is i have to have the mic really close to my mouth, and thats not very useful for a desktop style mic.
So, i purchased the sony headset, unfortunately people still cant hear me on it unless they have a headset of their own…my friend uses the ps eye to talk to me. So, i can hear him, but he cant hear most of what i say.
I guess the point im trying to make is, I havent been able to use mic’s very well with the PS3, so much so that i’ve just given up on playing with friends.
I didn’t realize you couldn’t do text chat on the PS3. Were you at least able to send messeges to your friends prior to this update?

Get your facts straight. It’s $50 a YEAR, not $50 a MONTH. That boils down to just under $4 per month, less than a dollar a week. If it were $50 a month, the PS3 would be the leader in system sales and ownership.

At this point, I don’t even know that I’m asking for cross-game chat like I was before. No, at this point, I just want someone from Sony to step up and say something…ANYTHING. Even posting something like, “my cat’s breath smells like cat food” would be a step up from what we’ve got now. As it stands, we’re almost 1,600 comments in, and NOTHING from Sony. They say they look forward to our feedback…do they? If it were true, by now we’d have at least 1 reply.

PS3 firmware update v2.70 made all my streaming media files on my NAS show up as unsupported data! I believe people using Windows Media Player as a streaming server are unaffected but if you have a NAS you will be very upset! Like me!!!
I just upgraded my PS3 to the latest v2.70 yesterday and now almost every file says unsupported data when accessed via the uPnP media server in my Netgear ReadyNAS Duo. I am spewing! Not happy Jan!!! I had everything running beautifully and then update and now my NAS is useless for the PS3.
First I thought the data on my NAS had got corrupted. Never did I expect it would be the PS3 update. So I played the NAS videos on my laptop. They worked fine. No corruption. Then I put a video from my NAS that said unsupported data on a flash stick and inserted it into the PS3. I was surprised that it played fawlessly.
So it is true! PS3 firmware update v2.70 will more than likely stuff your ability to play files from your Network Attached Storages uPnP Media Server. It did for me and several other people with different NAS’s posting on the Maxconsole Forum.
I hope this gets fixed soon. I just wish I could downgrade back to V2.6 so I could play my files again!

OK, while generally happy with PSN in Australia, this latest update V2.70 keeps kicking me off the network (really annoying while playing zombies on cod5, 5 times in an hour last night). and to make matters worse it has seemed to have somehow reset all my deathcards c’mon sony WTF is going on
The friends list update is a just 1 example of things that should have been left alone updates are suppose to make things better not worse.Way to Screw THINGS up.
