Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:
Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

Same. I wanna be able to use my own avatar…although I can see why Sony isn’t (offensive images and such). Still should be an option.
Also I agree with someone’s post about video’s stopping after pushing the PS button or even square to do the duration breakups, because it’s annoying. If I wanted to stop my movie I would’ve pushed start/X. I loved being able to text someone and still be able to watch my vids. BRING IT BACK!!
I’ve been using the text chat some more and actually like it more and more. Its a very convenient exchange for the PM. As I’m quick in typing I now know how much I can type and it goes pretty easy. As said before, text being censured isn’t really necessary as you type with people mostly you know, unless you’re invited into a big groups chat, but we’re all responsible enough to say I’m staying here or leave or tell the person to keep his / her tone. In Home okay you censure that a bit, but in personal chats, its really not needed IMO.
in the next update can u try to make the attachment files attach like 1 gb… itll make the ps3 so much cooler

hmmm i wish there still was an in game music option…
after a while… game music gets old
i bet there going to have an update for that extra processer in the ps3 that isint being used

Very disappointed that I can no longer play previously working DivX files. I hope this is a bug that will soon be remedied.
o and one more thing… the only thing i really think is missing… if i were to plug in my ipod… i dont want all my music in those crazy files… its a little weird… i would like it to be… dare i say it… more like the 360.
when you plug in an ipod all your music is sorted by the artist not in system files and what not. o and again in game music option.. that would be my priority uno!!!
I just wish that Sony could update the firmware without breaking media server support almost every time.
I don’t particularly care about text chat, the ability to sort my friends list, or the ability to back up the videos that I can purchase from the European store…. oh yeah.
The feature that I DO use a lot is the media server support, but it seems to get broken in every firmware update and I’m left waiting for Sony to either fix it themselves (which either doesn’t happen, or doesn’t happen quickly), or for the media server software people to work out how Sony broke the support, find a workaround, and release a patch. How hard can it be to just leave existing functionality well alone?
now i cannot stream any of my (.avi) files through media server.. unsupported data now not happy
why can’t i change my background colour of my ps3 anymore?
i’m not kidding, when i select a different colour… it stays pink??? what gives????
the update is ok. Thanks for putting the option. but can you make an option to turn off the censor. I speak french with my friends and im censored with much basic words.

I suppose the thought of people wanting to play PS3 exclusives on a PS3 never crossed your mind. Maybe people do not like the 360 controller (I for one cannot stand the directional pad) or mandatory fee that accompanies the XBL service either.
One could also argue that the PS3 console is superior to the 360, not only in raw power but in build quality. Stating which service (or console) is superior is an opinion, nothing more.
How about coming up with something more constructive rather than bash people for requesting valid features. I for one have seen plenty of 360 fans request features the PS3 has had from day one (i.e.: Internet Browser, group chat – which was recently added to 360 via NXE update).
Psp have Skype from the xmb? Give us Skype for the ps3 for voice and text chat.
and cannot add the playstation card to the wallet

Glad to be a PS3 owner. I’ve never been more satisfied since PS2 (Which by the way, if the FF Advent Children Complete PS3 doesn’t host the on-board PS2, I’m gonna buy a PS2 with it..I need to finish GoW1 & 2 before 3 comes out! =D)
good job screwing up the divx playback. and half the bs features dont work. are you seriously oblivous to what we want? the text chat is useless. are we going to have to start paying like the Xbots before we can get some patches that are useful? i mean come on some of us have been waiting since launch do you even get it? pull your heads out of your butts and read the forums for once for crying out loud.

“intelligently discuss what could improve the system”???? LOL thats funny… well, don’t you think voice messaging would be just a tad quicker form of communication as opposed to text messaging? When people say they are happy with their PS3’s, i don’t understand that. What exactly is there to be happy about?? As is, the PSN is horrible.. I use my ps3 to watch blu-ray movies and i do most of my gaming on the xbox360.. the 360 is a real gaming machine with real features that make a gamers’ experience worthwhile. the 50 bucks i pay every 13 months is well worth it. i’d rather pay 50 bucks a year and have Xbox Live rather then have a free PSN the way it is now.. The PSN is a hassle to play on.

all of you seem to forget that SONY HAS EVER READ THIS BLOG Erick just put the news he get payed to do and thats it all our opinions or what we want they can-t care less so all this is useless why bother to put so many good ideas or features if sony don’t care get that in your skull is the same with all the other consoles the only difference is that the people that think in the features in the other consoles seems to be more smarter that the little jap guy that works in his office
I cant understand people saying ‘give it time’ cross game voice will come. How flaming long do you wait, and hell how could ‘text chatting’ be higher priority than ‘Cross Game voice chats’, and ‘Skype support’.

Where is A2DP support for bluethoot headsets? And is it coming ever? This would enable me to play games the ONLY time I can play. After the kids has gone to bed.

I copied one of the DivX AVI files from my media server that PS3 now reports as “Unsupported Data” to a memory stick. It DOES play off the memory stick, but the PS3 displays its info as a mpeg-4 rather than a DivX file. Sounds like firmware 2.70’s playback problem is specific to streaming from a media server.

Dude, you really lost touch with reality.. Who the hell wants a web browser on a gaming system?? the ps3 is NOT a computer. The web browser does not belong there. THANK GOD THE 360 DOES NOT HAVE A WEB BROWSER. and as far as ps3 exclusives??? what are you talking about?? the ps3 has CRAP exclusives.. Killzone2, LittleBigPlanet, and Uncharted are decent at best. I agree that the ps3 is better built when compared to the 360, but the 360 makes up for it in the fun factor. The 360 has way better exclusives and features. This is NOT an opinion, I’m stating facts here…You guys are so used to the crap ps3 that you all lost touch to what gaming is really all about..

I do realize that these features are free, so I won’t complain too much…
Though as some others have mentioned, in game voice/video chat would definitely be cool. That and getting past the red tape involved with adding the video store to Canada. We’re also part of North America so this issue should have been corrected by now imo.
Way to keep providing a steady flow of content though.

Well to all you people that keep going on about the xbox and saying that its not opinion but fact that the xbox is better get real. I like both xbox and ps3 but in my OPINION the ps3 is better. Also i would have to agree that this update is worthless and they should get there act together but that still isn’t gonna change my mind that the ps3 is better then the xbox.

“ps3 crap exlusives”? funny too bad you dont understand the difference between well designed games from crap remakes of their previous versions with simple add-ons. Stop bagging on Sony you just prove to the world why Microsoft isn’t a systematically proving machine at this time. In other words xbox 360 crashes, (buggy) vista, (incapable) internet explorer and (worthless) software for the zune.
If you don’t like the ps3 or its contents go complain on an xbox fansite. Your wasting your time here, because we know (playstation people or the public in general) know that the playstation offers more than a crash-happy 360.

the ps3 has the most potential out of any system and shut up already with the xbox controller being rated the best,, it uses double A batteries for crying out loud
