Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:
Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

I’m just wondering when we will get propper themes. the types that make your system menu (XMB by default) look like a game menu or a dvd/BR movie menu with non-static backgrounds and looping music that goes along with it…

I didn’t/don’t really have a #1 priority keeping online free is about all I want, otherwise I won’t use it. But I guess implementing in game music to all games would be nice though.

text chat is the most ridiculous feature ever as it was already implemented by those with intelligence by just sending quick messages in the message title which will show up on screen anyway such as “join party” and etc. The friend list is very annoying, i will probably get over it but there was no reason to change it in the first place as it was fine and by changing it has obviously pissed people when it could have been avoided. nothing worth while in this update and i feel it actually made the system worse and less enjoyable over all

At least it’s a step up, by making “private channels” for players. HOPEFULLY they can build upon this for cross game voice chat/private channel voice chat.

I am honestly sick of how when theres a new update, something i have been used to for quite sometime bites the dust.
I liked the way my online contacts were sorted before, alpabetical by online then alphabetical by offline. why when you add new features, do silly things like this have to be taken out.
same with how the harddrive videos pause when i press the ps button. there is a pause button for that. please bring these simple features back.
Sony thank you so much on behalf of me and most of all my friends on psn because there only saying good things about the text chat we were using it all night i wish they had time to thank you there selves but you no how it is. Keep up the good work.

Hello,You guys should make audio & video chat able to be used during a video game!Everybody wants it i really want it! and the options should be make it to where they can see your playing screen like the can see u playing from their screen! i mean this update is awesome but juss text chat for a whole system updat you should’ve added more!

The cross game chat is the basic foundation. They needed to set up a way for you to communicate with multiple users across games. I’m sure voice would be preferred, but you have to start somewhere.
In game voice chat consists of a few seperate pieces:
1) A way to group people to want to communicate with.
2) A method to communicate across games
3) Directed Voice chat that can only be heard by the people in your group from part 2.
They had sto get parts one and two down first. Think about it, right now we have the ability to talk to several people across games.
We also have the ability to voice chat with a single individual.
The next logical step would be to implement the voice chat with multiple people. Just give it time.
Also, I’d be very surprised if we don’t get cross game invites soon as a result of this.
As any halfway decent programmer would tell you, you can’t make too many changes at once. It makes it almost impossible to troubleshoot if something goes wrong because you don’t know what part is broken.
cone on Music??? you can just put your stereo and low the music game option don’t ask for worthless things voice chat?? i dont want to hear annoying guys crying for losing…just give things we can use…give us backwards and make better trophy’s .
You’re not getting backwards compatibility. It was removed due to hardware costs and the current version that you probably have can’t support it. If you had one of the launch ones you wouldn’t be complaining.
You waited for a price cut… well sometimes price cuts require other things to be cut as well.
well i just got naruto ultimate nija 4 for the ps2 and i have the 80gb ps3 will it play without freezing?
I noticed you added a feature in the PS store if you download something in the store it gives you a ETA on when it could be finished downloaded. Now all you have to do is ad this to the XMB download list for each item.

Firmware 2.70 is horrible. I asked for cross-game voice chat and voice messaging and instead i get TextChat? I believe Sony is mocking us gamers. making fun of us by putting out crap.. The TextChat feature is so horrible, I can’t even describe it.. its censored and I am not even allowed to type full sentences??? what is wrong with this picture??? Sony: get your heads out of your [DELETED] and remove TextChat and replace it with voice chat. Also, it’d be nice if you guys add voice messaging (not text messaging)
Good update, but we still want in game voice chat. and not one that requires us to be in the xmb to use. I want to be able to play Kz2 single player and get a chat invite and close the xmb and chat with my friends while playing.
Would have liked voice chat a lot more than text chat.
So here’s a question since everyone seems to have so many thoughts on how they could do this better than Sony.
How do you propose deciding whether you chat to your friends vs chatting to the other players in the game?
And also, how do you propose selecting which friends you currently want to chat with?
So, everyone was upset yesterday when the “Big Announcement” wasn’t firmware 2.70.
Predictably, when we get firmware 2.70 on April 1st (please tell me that was on purpose) the people are still whining and complaining.
I am sorry that Sony has just ruined your gaming experience by not giving you all cross-game voice chat and the other things on your list of issues.
Here’s an idea: If you want your PS3 to be like a 360, maybe you should just get a 360. At least then we could have intelligent discourse on the PlayStation Blog.
This update is so pointless!!!if you wanted to talk to a friend you would just send them a message anyway,it just seems to much hassle!whats the point?come on psn cant you do any better? were is the in game voice chat!!!the most simple and most impotant update needed!!it puts people off purchasing a ps3 when you cant do simple things like this.you need to keep up with the xbox!
Sony has let me down so many times, its not funny anymore. 2.7 is a joke, improve the internet browser, speed up your servers for downloading stuff off the store, and stop working on the ps2, it doesn’t compete with the wii at all (the wii is much cooler), and its time is over, let it die in peace, please…

Please, PLEASE update the web browser so it doesn’t crash the system. A number of things that can be fixed are:
– The stop function to actually stop loading the page that obviously conflicts with the browser, rather being entirely useless.
– Allow the user to set a certain amount of time before the page times out (ie. stops trying to load). Sometimes pages keep trying to load for a many minutes with a blank white screen and the browser won’t let you close the window.
It’s so awesome that you allow a web browser in the first place, and I use it a lot to check out articles on digg and write email on gmail. And watch videos on YouTube. Very cool. But these bugs very often end up my having to cold reboot the system, which can’t be good for the hardware.
Plus, don’t you think it’s rather ironic that the playstation web browser can’t log into the playstation blog?
A lot can be done in this area. I really don’t care much for text chat in a game, especially when just about every online PS3 game I’ve played allows voice chat.

I have a 360, had it for 3 years now.. Xbox Live is superior to PSN in ever sense of the word. XBL has features that Sony can only dream of getting. I sit here reading a lot of ur posts and i see most of you wishing Sony would offer the features that Xbox Live already has but you don’t wanna get a 360?? LOL. And to top it all of, i also see a lot of these people bashing the 360.. WOW.. This arrogance from the PS fanboys never ceases to amaze me..
I would like to be able to store someones real name(visible to me only) when I add a friend and for my existing friends. Sometimes I forget who is who.
that text chat is nice, but what we need is the ability to voice chat with our friends while playing someone else, that would be the ultimate feature.

i was happy about this firmware update, until my system froze up twice web browsing today and not only couldnt i turn it off from the front but it forced me to switch of from behind, not good,its never done that. i’m on my second ps3 and if this firmware screws up my system i’ll be selling every sony product i have cause its gettin bad and i use to be a big sony fanboy, but now daily im losing respect for my ps3, i just want to jam games peacefully and thats becoming further from the truth.

If they wanted to start at the basic level they should’ve started with what the majority wanted- a means to send voice messages to other users.
The biggest reason why so many wanted in-game XMB in the first place was because it was such a inconvinience to have to quit a game for the sole purpose of msging another users, thus ending your gaming session. If you chose to not respond, it might’ve given the other person the feeling that you didn’t want to talk to them, when you might not have minded responding. Another big issue was having to solely send text messages.
the newly implemented feature was continually criticized because it was still only an option to text someone. Creating text chat room cross-game thus continues this pattern of not actually addressing the main focus- Cross-game voice chat/messaging.
We want to be able to use our mics, esp if the game has no voice chat support to talk to fellow gamers/friends.
Being in different voice chat rooms is not an issue as you could only be vocally active in one. Any others would be muted.

I don’t have a 360. I am extremely happy with my PS3 and was even before in-game XMB. I don’t sit around and complain that my PS3 should be like a 360. If that were the case I would have bought a 360.
I would rather people come on here and intelligently discuss what could improve the system rather than people who sound childish with rude comments.
If people want to request voice chat, that is fine, but calling Sony and its employees names and acting as if they have done some great offense to you is just stupid and immature. They didn’t rip you off and they didn’t steal from you. If you already have a PS3 then you paid for less than what you have now. If it wasn’t good enough, then why did you buy it? If it was good enough then why stupidly childish comments?
I am not free from my complaints, but I do attempt to be civil when I voice them.
Meh! I couldn’t care less about any of these new “features”, but for some reason I still had to spend half an hour installing it on my PS3 last night all the same, why is that?? PLEASE stop forcing people to update firmware every single time there’s some minor new feature that you don’t care about!!
Oh, and when are you finally going to fix the firmware update progress bar that finishes both downloading and installing at like 55-60% every single time. Is it really that complicated to have a progress bar actually go to 100% before restarting??
