Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:
Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

And one more thing, the ability to delete thumbnails on videos. I HATE it when i’ve got them all with the nice default icon, and then i import a video from a USB stick and it auto thumbnails for me. C-C-C-C-C-COMBO BREAKERRRR!!

Really? in-game “Text” chat? we have that already, its called messages. i think guys could of have put this energy into…in-game “VOICE” chat..you know like the Xbox has. very disapointed

WHY THIS UPDATE IS BAD
– Text chat has censors, so words like crap and even the hell in hello will be censored. THis is a PRIVATE chat, why would you do it?
– Inability to know when someone has left the chat, its all in the background.
– Limited to 33 characters per message — this is appaling
ITS GREAT THAT PSN HAS ALL THESE FEATURES AND ARE FREE, BUT WHY MAKE THEM WHEN PEOPLE WONT EVEN USE THEM AS MUCH

Just installed 2.70 update now NONE of my avi’s being hosted by my media server (Freecom Network harddrive pro)work i have looked at a couple of forums and found that i do not appear to be the only person effected by this issue please can you let me know how i will be able to resolve this and start playing my avi’s through my media server agin

That ~IS~ good news (that I hope you aren’t joking about), because I have purchased at least one film, but I need to have my PS3 serviced and probably replaced (stupid store warranty!) and was wondering if I’d be able to do a proper backup first.

so this is just all one update for send text messages and chat features…and no backwards…. I’m disappointed.
i’m not complaining because i do like it, but the blog or the list does not mention the update affecting the themes on my ps3. before the themes would be stored in the order i downloaded them. now they get rearranged in the order i use them. for example, i use a theme it moves to the top of the list, i use another that goes on top so on and so forth. is this something extra or was it unintentional?
Such a small update and it took 4 months or so for it. Really, at this space we will get the much needed features within 2 years. Hurry up guys, also I dont see the point of using this feature while your playing a game.

PS3 Firmware v2.70 is a waste of bandwidth as it still lacks ingame/cross-gamevoice chat.

I find it hilarious that all the people are complaining about backwards compatibility now. You should have bought a PS3 earlier.
Instead you waited for a price cut… well that price cut came at the cost of BC because everyone was holding out.
Also, as for the cross game chat, I’m pretty sure this is the first step. They create chat rooms where you can chat with several friends, once the foundation is set for that, adding voice into those chat rooms will probably be much easier than trying to do the whole thing at once.
Keep in mind, they also need to remain aware of the fact that the PS3 needs to be able to tell the difference between a user trying to talk to his friends in another game and a user trying to talk to people playing the same game.
And again, people should shut up and stop whining about these updates already. You think the guys at Sony are picking their toenails or something? If you’ve been following the game media, like I do, you know that Sony is working at your hard command to fulfill everyone’s wish to add ingame voice chat, but it takes time! Plus they’ve said you shouldn’t expect this option with the next update, which has launched today.
You should have learned by now you should take stupid rumors with a grain of salt.

This ridiculous text-chat feature is just another slap in the face from Sony Entertainment.
And the 33-character limit is just proof that the PS3 can’t handle any kind of real communication between gamers.

ok.. this is crap. I have been trying to dowload this update now for about seven hours and it gets to as high as 25% and stops. and i can’t play online without downloading this first!? WTH! first my playstation3 gets this stupid blinking red light, I call and they tell me even though I spent a little over $600.00 for the system, and about $800.00 on games so far, not to mention I have been a loyal playstation fan since day one, that I have to send them another $150.00 just to have them fix what they knew would be a problem in the first place. NOW I can’t play Football Online because v2.70 won’t download! I am on the verge of a brand switch. even though xbox has the same red light problem, they actually gave my son a discounted price to fix it. If anyone can tell me how to play online again without this silly update I would be greatfull. I tried to do it by downloading it to a media server from my pc, but low and behold, playstation doesn’t offer it for pc download… son-of-a-$^@$%

The text chat censors the german words for “not” and “please”, so you can’t say “nicht” or “bitte” in the chat. And that’s not all. This is how my first two lines in the chat looked:

anyone else noticed how ‘voice’ chat isn’t faded out on his PS3?
Loving the new text chat, works great across any games, I was in Home and friend in Burnout and 6 others on Socom. It’s great for Socom because when you die in a ranked match, you can send out a message to all players that are still alive where you got shot. Much better than the regular messaging system. To the person above me who thinks that it will never be used, I’m Using it now and so is the rest of the Sony World.
