PS3 Firmware (v2.70) Update

2,068 0

Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.

In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:

Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)

  • Sort your friends via their online status
  • Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)

Video delivery service on PlayStation Store

  • Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
  • Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

For a quick preview of Text Chat and some of the other 2.70 features, check out this video:

The 2.70 update will be released soon, and as always, we look forward to reading your feedback.

  • GREAT job Sony. Please, an easy request…an envelope icon in the top right corner of the xmb that appears when you have incoming mail or messages. I really need an indicator icon.It is very annoying leaving notifications on whilst watching a bluray or streaming a movie, so I disable it altogether. That envelope icon would be AMAZING! THANKS FOR THE GOOD WORK AND keep it up!

  • bloody hell, I love gaming and prefer to do it on my PS3. But if Sony doesnt pull its finger out soon, they will not only lose me, but many of my friends. 2Years on and cross game voice chat is a must. NO Matter what the cost, get it done quick. Its making Sony look incapable, 2 yrs into the cycle and we should be moving beyond th xbox, not still playing catchup.
Text chat is such a cop out

  • Hey Mr PLAYSTATION YOU SHOULD MAKE GAME CHAT…CHATTING WITH YOUR BUDDIES WHILE PLAYING IN A GAME THANKS!!!

  • YES, EXTREMELY UNHAPPY…

Unless the next update is within a month… then we are cool ;)

  • @ThomDanger: this update does allow this. If you go to the download list in the video section of PSN you can now re-download movies.

  • Take your time, Sony, I’m sure that when firmware 3.0 come we will have all features that those people here are constantly yelling about.

I’m definitely a “single player” person (I only check new demos online from time to time) so I don’t care for most of this features. As far as I’m concerned – bring on more great SP games and we’ll be friends forever ;)

Oh, and don’t forget to release software BC for PS2 games for all PS3 models. Bye!

  • I was extremely excited about the text chat in the XMB. That was until I used it and realized we’re censored in it. And THEN I realized how many absolutely ridiculous words were censored, that really got me. Cave? Horse? Bite? Cracker? What in the world is going on?! Censoring curse words alone would be a bad move to do, but to push it to this extent is INSANE. I could understand censorship in our PERSONAL and PRIVATE chat rooms if we’re underage, but if we’re OF age, don’t censor us in our private conversations. Let the censorship be up to parental controls or something, this is crazy . . .

  • This is a joke, right?
    RIGHT?

Come on you guys, you can’t be serious about this? Of ALL the features that has been requested, THIS is what you’ve come up with?

I mean, it’s not bad. It’s a lot easier than sending everyone a individual message. But just check out the comments to this post. On EVERY single page there’s three or more posts concerning cross-game VOICECHAT.

Yes. VOICECHAT Sony – Welcome to 2009.

Maybe you could merge this new chat-room by enabling voicechat as well? This way, people with mics could talk instantly, regardless of what they’re doing, and people who do not have a mic still get to say something through text-messages.

Also, what’s up with the useless 32 characters-limit? Are you being serious?

    GIVE US CROSS-GAME VOICECHAT. PLEASE!

  • Hmm…

  • thank you sony 4 this update now i hope the next update will be photo for our AVATAR icon.im a big fan of the ps world little by little sony is choping away on the 360 i have a idea for a next game for the ps3 a remake of double dragon that will be cool thank you sony from megatron2

  • wait so we can now voice chat even when we are in a game?

  • Battery icon still covers up the date/time!

PS. just tried text chat and I felt like I was playing on the PC 10 years ago. Voice chat , chop chop!

  • said it before ill say it again all i want in an update is for them to…

    FIX 8002AD23

or at the very least figure out what causes it

  • Love it!!!!!!!!

  • who cares about an update? i want GOMIBAKO (trash can, trash box)

  • Very good Guys for People they dont have an headset ;) We need now a feature to talk In-Game ;)

  • To all those who are still waiting for in-game voice chat from different games… its quite obviously well on its way. 3.00 here we come!

  • o gud news.. but wat we want is “CUSTOM MUSIC TRACKS” in every game. i personally cant stand original music from the game..

  • Ok, nothing of that is useful for me. Who has the time to use that chat function while playing a game!?
What I want it´s an update to the loading time of xmb. Syncing trophies, get the xmb up and running while playing a game and watch friends gamertag takes too much time.

  • FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE CRYING THAT IT MUST BE A JOKE, TURN ON YOUR PS3’S THE UPDATE IS NOW LIVE!

You should let people have an option in their settings for censorship in words. Obviously have it automatically on and let us turn it off if we want. Thanks!

  • The censorship on the text ship is bollocks, I can understand that under circumstances this may be useful (playing children..), but the user should decide if to use this “feature” or not..

  • seriously why is con sensored? i couldnt even say continuously lol

  • On a completely different story, SCEA needs to bring games like My Summer Holiday 3 (Boku no Natsuyasumi 3 in japan) over to other regions too. It would be nice to have some variety, but I guess SCEA thinks we only like violent games here… I miss the variety the PS2 had. SCEA bring over unique games like this and others!!

  • yea.. we do need party chat.. lol.. chat even if you and your friends are in seperate games.. ex: friend in gta4, and im in killzone. and we still able to voice chat

  • Personally I’m looking for a couple of must-have features that are still missing in the PS3 OS.

This includes support for OGG/Theora, OGG/Vorbis and FLAC. I don’t need encoding support for Vorbis or FLAC, since the ripper software on the PS3 is useless (you may want to stick in some cdparanoia like software in there too).

On top of that, I’m still looking for a better audio player. The current one just plain sucks.

Some sort of simple text editor would be nice, but since we have google docs, I don’t really need it (only when my ISP wants to play games). If you add the text editor, and maybe a spreadsheet, you have the needs of about 99% of all computer users covered. The PS3 could be the cheapest high-powered personal computer on the market, which has great games.

  • That`s great!
If you could add subfolders & video playlists to PS3, then our beautiful machine would be near perfect, in my opinion.
    Go Sony!

  • Will NTFS disks be supported? NTFS (at least read-only access) would be the absolute killer feature of the PS3, because then I wouldn’t need other HD players (such as WD TV). Please integrate NTFS support! Why is it still not available?

  • @Lil_Mermaid_Girl

Yeah! i buy the games in play-asia but really sux play thas really nice games in japanese >=(

We need Skype for Cross-game in PS3! the we can chat with PSP and PC users!!!!!!!!!!

  • Very cool, but I have been waiting anxiously for the in-game music feature. :(

  • I think the chat should run at the bottom of the screen so you do not have to go in and out of every game to chat with friends

  • HOW ABOUT FIXING the backwards compatibility for the ps3 80 gig!!!! i cant play Naruto shippuden Ultimate ninja 4 !!! cause it freezes every 5mins!!!! i guess now we have to wait 4 more months for another update… SAD DAY to be a PS3 Owner !!!

  • Sorry for double posting, but I really don’t need in game voice chatting and considering how everything seems to take about 10 times the amount of memory it should when you add features, please don’t.

  • One of the best updates after 2.40 (the working one).
But I would like if SONY will expand on it and just not stop at the text chat… voice???
Plus, these are the kind of news that make me re-evaluate XBL against PSN…
One less feature to brag about for XBL owners!

But please SONY… don’t stop here, and keep working towards the Voice chat! End of April perhaps?

  • Nice! Great new add!

  • Text chat would have been a good idea… IF THERE WAS VOICE CHAT TO GO WITH IT.

On its own, text chat is little more than a testament to how many features are missing from the PS3.

  • Nice update! More avatars would’ve been nice but oh well.

  • Love the in-game chatting. One complaint:

    The censoring.

Please get rid of it. I’m in a private chat with my friends that I was invited to or invited people in to. There is absolutely no reason that I should be unable to aptly express myself in the means I see fit.

Plus it censors the word “pimp”, which I’m pretty sure is a crime against humanity.

  • And one thing I almost forgot….
What about the BGM… not every game supports it… we should be able to listen to whatever we have in our HDD’s instead of the DEVs putting in an extra option for BGM!
SONY… What about the failed promise of 2.40? Perhaps before getting to voice chat we should improve this proposed text chat! Like as other users commented, put it in the bottom! shouldn’t require to press the PS button to access.. always ON kinda thing!

Great work SONY… Totally forgot to congratulate you guys on the great work you are doing!

PS: Don’t worry about the users (incl me) we have a never ending list of XMB updates!

  • How about cross game voice chat?

  • Yeah I’m waiting for Gomibako too … and hopefully the trash game released for PSP too.

  • So let me get this straight. Instant messaging between 16 people in 3 different rooms instead of just voice messaging between 2 people? And so many completely common and unoffensive words are censored, let alone the fact that there should be no censoring at all between friends. And you still can’t fix the fact that the clock overlaps the controller/etc status. And you added a link to google the name of our game for us? And a minpr “dynamic normalization” feature. Why exactly is Sony paying the GAME OS team for? I have friends that can push a firmware OS, running on the beast that is the Cell, further than this.

My suggestion: pull heads out of butts and LearnToCode(TM).

  • One thing is missing. I want to be able to sort freinds from family from killzone buddies from my call of duty clan members on my freinds list. Please make this happen.

  • In my opinion, text chat is a nice addition.
But as most people said it isn´t what we really want.
I can imagine that implementing cross game chat isn´t that easy. But you guys had enough time to manage it.
The cross game chat shouldn´t have an impact on the bandwith as the current chat has.
It´s ridiculous that people with 1 or 2 Mbit DSL lines can´t stay in a chatroom while they have zero probs in a cross game party chat on the other system…

  • FIX THE Backwards Compatibility for the 80 gig PS3 PLZZZZ!!!!!!!!!

  • text chat???? • I’d say, finally “full?” unicode support (yah, i know you hamburgers don’t even know what ąśćźńóę is :P) in firmware.

    Thank you!

  • MOE-GUNZ-JACKSON

It will be better if once you press the PS button, wile in a text chat, it will take you right to the Text Chat screen.

What we will be Superb is if you are in only 1 text chat, you can freely type (if you have Keyboard or Keypad) wile in game to chat with the people in the chat, no pressing of the PS button.

    Pretty cool update.

  • Dear Sony,

Thanks to your fabulous new update (v.2.70) I can no longer use my new purchase of two TAC brand PS2 to PS3 adapters. The adapters, a value of $40CDN, were a perfect solution to be able to use my favourite peripherals of the PS2 on my PS3, as well as not to spend $60 plus CDN each on PS3 controllers and around the same for PS3 Guitar Hero controllers.

But alas, it seems that your only concern is milking me for all I am worth and my reward for such a loss of functionality is a text chat that is to be used cumbersomely unless the user is granted the use of a wireless keyboard (yet another hefty purchase to gain ease and functions that the PS3 sorely lacks and as things seem to be going that functionality will surely be lost soon as well).

It looks as though this was the last task of your elimination of the Backwards Compatibility feature on PS3s. Congratulations Sony, for making me not want to support the PS3 even more.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go play Super Mario Bros. on my NES.

    Signed,
    80GB Backwards Compatible PlayStation3 owner
