Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:
Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

The update to the in game XMB speed and Trophy loading and comparisom are incredible.

Change offline friends back to alphabetical please, or at least have the option for it. It’s really annoying.
I second that Guttermouth. It IS annoying to have your offline friends be listed by the amount of time they’ve been offline as opposed to alphabetical.
Oh and I still say this update sucked.
Thanks for the update. I also notice the PSN Trophy cards load up a lot faster now with the new update. Thanks. I also can not wait till you guys add Voice chat ingame and fix the battery indicator which overlaps the time. Thanks again!

How about support for mp4 video streaming? They always stutter bad.
I and every one else that owns a PS3 want cross game voice chat. Plus you should bring down the price on repairing the PS3 after paying 650 for the 60gb model another 150 is just insane.
Text chat is TERRIBLE for consoles. Voice chat FTW.
Happy to hear that videos purchased on the Playstation Store can now be backed up. The restrictions that were placed on purchased Videos before pretty much ensured that I would look at Rentals exclusively–there was almost no difference between a rental and a purchase if I ever had to delete the purchased video.
I hope the studios will eventually let Sony allow consumers to redownload videos that were purchased. But babysteps are better than no steps ^_^
Text messaging is great. I hope PSN will have a voice chat and voice messaging system soon ^_^

If they can’t do it the way Microsoft does it, then they should use SKYPE!!! they used it on PSP, i mean if PSP can handle it, surely PS3 Can while in-game XMB. Maybe skype ans Sony can together merge contacts list with skype membership and PSN friends list… I dont know…lol, but it seems like Sykpe would do the job, im sure though PS3 will be getting in-game voice chat soon, if not the next update.
Im very dissapointed in 2.70 I already really knew I was dissapointed in it before I watched the video, I just watched it because I like Eril Lempels voice…>.> its just a very soothing voice….But you guys really need to get on the ball and add cross game voice chat…Ill be expecting that 2.75 >.>

I can’t even say notifications with out it blanking out fica. It’s bad enough that I made a typo spelling puta when I meant to say put all. 2/3’s of the peopel I know don’t know spanish curse words so why in gods name are you blanking them out in an ENGLISH speaking region!!
FIX THIS AS IT ALMOST MAKES THIS PROGRAM UNUSABLE!!! At least give me 2.71 so I can disable the censorship as I’m 28 years old and my friends are adults and i’m a strong advocate of ZERO censorship.

Of course, if all it is is a ‘disc read error’, you can try opening the system yourself and cleaning the lens, since that’s all a DRE is usually caused by: A DIRTY LENS.
I agree with Guttermouth and CheapestGamer. I want the offline friends to be listed in alphabetical order again not by there offline time because it is annoying looking for their names unless you constantly change back and forth between status and alphabetical. Bring the old way back!

I have had the PS3 for a little while now and it seems that each time there is a frimware update it only adds on more cool ways to enjoy the PS3. So Thanks for keeping up with the updates for the PS3. It is a great systyem.
@WarGOD25: Exactly. I’ve got a lot of active friends, so having them sorted alphabetically made it easier to message them because I knew how far down the list they would be. Now they could be anywhere and it’s unintuitive as hell.

What are the chances of getting an update to Flash for better HD video compatibility?
Another thing, what are the chances of getting the Silverlight plug-in? I know it’s Microsoft, but you also support the WMA and WMV file formats which are also a Microsoft format.
One last thing: What is the possibility of opening the PS3 up a little bit? Letting developers create smaller apps that could take advantage of the PS3’s internet connectivity. Create something like Apple is doing with the App Store on the iPhone.

You guys wont even investigate to see what causes it.

Please, PLEASE add two different checkboxes to “show new messages” and “show friends online status”. I want to know about new messages, but my about 50 friends go to online/offline to often.
Faster loading is very welcome but the cross game text chat is … meh.
I really don’t want to sit with a keyboard on my lap while playing, I’ve got a PC for that. The PS3 keyboard is works if you are eight or have deformed tiny fingers.
Please please please please give us voice – that is all we need to have a great experience. Text chat is the runners up prize to voice.
@ 2:15 notice that when he is in the menu under his friend…..The Start New Chat is White…Mabey Both Text and Video are both enabled…I hope so…if that is finally enabled PS3 is Top over 360…
I have not had the update yet, but my hunny just did the update on his 40G and he is having an issue. Anyone having this issue, now when he sends messages, he can only send a message with about 20 characters, where as before he could send messages with 200 characters. If he tries to send a long messages he gets the 800 series error code. HELP PLEASE, when i get home tomorrow i’m going to get the update, yet i’m concerned now b/c he is having messaging issues.

I own a PS3 and an XBOX 360, and I need you guys to understand one thing: the differences between the next-gen online features is vast. I’m sure you are aware that Microsoft has nearly perfected the online experience while Sony is behind by much. I love Playstation, and I’ve had every one of your systems, but it angers me because the system I once adored is really letting me down. NO ONE on XBOX Live would use a text chat room. As a matter of fact, they’re probably laughing at PS3 owners because this is how far behind Sony has gotten with nothing really accomplished that would make them jealous. I’m not an XBOX fanboy. I’m not PS3 fanboy. I’m a videogame fanboy. I also have the Wii, but Nintendo will never catch up to either Sony or Microsoft in terms of the online experience.
Cross-game chatting is so pivotal to the online gaming experience. That’s my number one online feature used for xbox 360. PLEASE take note of Microsoft and catch up to them! I cannot express this enough!
Also, improvements to the official Playstation website would be appreciated. Look at Microsoft’s website for clues and how to make it more successful.
Hopefully sooner than later.

Great Job with the update although it’s not what a lot of PS3 gamers were expecting, Text Chat is a great feature but we need Voice Chat over Games even when our friends are playing different games. Please sony get this feature in asap.
When they add cross game voice chatting, how much do you want to bet that a whole group of morons will complain about how the PS3 is copying the 360?
This is sweeeet! The chat stuff is great and all, but you can now COPY & PASTE!! You can also copy and paste web addresses if you hover the cursor over a link, press triangle and go to File > Copy Address of this Link and of course you can also copy and paste the link of the page. :D Now you can download Youtube videos using Keepvid.com directly to your PS3!
how about letting us re-download movies when we upgrade our hard drives and are then up a creek with no paddle and unable to access content we’ve already paid for
