PS3 Firmware (v2.70) Update

2,068 0

Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.

In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:

Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)

  • Sort your friends via their online status
  • Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)

Video delivery service on PlayStation Store

  • Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
  • Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

For a quick preview of Text Chat and some of the other 2.70 features, check out this video:

The 2.70 update will be released soon, and as always, we look forward to reading your feedback.

  • Also personally…this is pecause I own a Sony Bravia TV that supports Bravia Sync…I would like to see a firmware update for the PS3 that allows it to be compatible with Bravia Sync…I wouldn’t mind turning to HDMI 3 and BAM my PS3 turns on…Yeah, I am just that lazy, lol.

  • Okay, so there’s a DivX issue?

Anyone got more info on this?? I don’t want to update then have half my video files gone…

  • Can i suggest something how about adding the ability of listening to your music while playing in game if your already working on this then great but if not i would really appreciate it for anyone that agrees keep posting comments until they listen to us i would love to be playing resistance 2 and killzone 2 while jamming out to my tunes that would be awesome

  • I guess this is OK. i don’t think i will use it since you can’t pause during online play… SONY, you know that, right?

    hoping voice chat is next!!!

  • Ok, I have a couple issues with this update. After perusing the official forums, it seems I am not the only one. Before anyone snaps off and potentially thinks that this is a rant, it’s not. Just a concern.

    1. I read that there is a 32 character limit to the chat windows. This is wholly unbelievable. The standard message function was about 10 times longer than that. Why the short messages? No one can get their point across with that.

    2. Text censoring. This is an unfair privacy restriction. Many of my friends on the PSN are adults, and regardless of the content of our conversations, censoring them breaks all kinds of rules for most users. This is a practice wholly acceptable in Home, but is NOT NECESSARY for private messaging, even between many people. Seeing as that the people on your friends list are the ones you can message, the rules should remain as they were before hand with the standard messaging.

    3. Of course, in-game voice chat. This is probably absent due to network stability issues, but come on, how did this half-assed text chat idea get through but not voice chat? Please, reorient your goals Sony. This is a huge step backwards.

  • Sony…Sony..Sony.

The best in the update is to backup my videos files. Good job on that but In-game chat.

First the Text Chat is in-game but interrupts Gameplay which makes no sense, plus text is censored and text letter limit is less than thirty. No Voice chat since I tried to use my headset but feature remained unusable. In-game Chat should integrate gameplay with chat not interrupt it.

Hope that this is an April fool’s Joke and you give us the rest tomorrow.

  • We need gamertags for SCEA and a new profile look. Please.

  • Chat.

The other problem with this setup is when you press the PS button with an active chat at min it should show that chat, not make a user scroll across and reopen it every time.

Chat overlay (If you cannot talk while in a game it’s useless) or split screen type setup is the only way to go. This isn’t even a true underlay since you basically have to re execute it in sense. The chat takes the same amount of time has sending messages the old way with only subject lines.

Voice chat can be done, but I think the software engineers are making it more difficult then it needs to be. Headset is controlled via settings, using the split screen type setup and you could control which split receives the headset audio via sys code hence no developer updates required. PS button should not overlay the game rather split screen to side of it while running, select voice/chat via PS button. (in split with user chat option X to return mic stream to game, etc.

  • Should have just waited and bundled voice chat with it. Thats what we really want.

  • Can i suggest something how about adding the ability of listening to your music while playing in game if your already working on this then great but if not i would really appreciate it for anyone that agrees keep posting comments until they listen to us i would love to be playing resistance 2 and killzone 2 while jamming out to my tunes that would be awesom

  • Update was a major bummer especially if u don’t have a keyboard but I’m optimistic the they’ll come out with voice chat during game play I think everyone wants that more than anything I know I do maybe 2.71?? Who knows.

  • not bad, it gets better each time
    good job SONY

  • This is depressing. I was hoping for more from this firmware update.

For goodness sakes, 360 has had in-game VOICE chat from day one.

It’s been 3 years and the best they can do is TEXT chat. Do you realize in the 3 years it took Sony to get in-game TEXT chat the 360 has had time to completely revamp their interface.

    This is pitiful!!!

And from the video the in-game XMB still loads slowly.

I’m starting to think this is a hardware problem. Can somebody over at sony please find a way to use the “Power of the Cell Processor” to do cross game voice chat.

Are we really asking for too much Sony. If so just let us know and we’ll stop hoping.

  • Very disappointing, i,m prefer cross game voice chat available at this version, i,m hope that next update will add this function as soon as possible!!!

  • yeah voice chat would be much better

  • @kspraydad

Thanks for the link. How did you find it? I was looking around for that.

Also, patience, brothas. Sony is doing a good job of continuing to add functionality to the PS3. In-game voice chat is sure to come around at some point….right, Sony?

  • This is a great update but aside the fact that many are still wanting skype i see that they can do text chat with there own software and video chat.. the psp has skype.. why cant we??? as i know its almost pointless as it has its own video program but regardless what about those like me who wanna talk with friends on my 32″ lcd lol

  • To Sony: Can you please make a Update that lets us use Street Fighter 4 arcade sticks on ps2 games?

  • What a great update. I just still wish that you could play music no matter what game you are playing

  • where i can download that

  • I am impressed with SCEA’s technical (or which ever) department for keeping up with the demands of new features. Can you guys add more visual players with the music player and perhaps Bluetooth compatibility with my phone so I can transfer pictures and music files to my PS3 to clear up space on my phone and to show the files on my TV. Please also let me be able to use the back buttons L1, L2, R1, and R2 to move through out the XMB (XrossMediaBar) Your Customer Service Department, who pick up the phones when you call 1-800-345-SONY, suck btw. There are few good people working there, excluding the supervisor I spoke with that actually stay up to date on anything to do with the PS3.

  • at least give us skype

  • I wish sony would make a couple updates for playing ps2 games also

  • I wish we had skype on ps3!!!

  • funny how they laied a joke on us. im still dreaming on voice messages and/or in game voice chat. i guess ill keep on dreaming….

  • Thanks for the text chat, so much better than the messages, cant wait to use it.
Also, anything audio related is appreciated too.

  • Thank you very much, but still I’m waiting for SkyPE support in PS3 and DivX HD Support …

  • Glad to see some awesome features consistently being added. I’d still love to see more connectivity between PSP and the PlayStation Network though — when the XMB features such as Friends List is added to a PSP and more remote play options I’ll really be happy!

  • WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,WE WANT in-game voice chat,

  • Joke or not a lot of PS3 owners are kind of ticked with this. I think we all expected so much more. Many game forums are bombing this update, I mean like really hard.

I agree no voice.. Give us firefox, skype, and how about a IM app? Instant messaging
would be pretty sweet on this console, worse cause create a PSNIM like yahoo, aol, etc.

    I just expected more.

  • since we can send 3 megs, why not let us send audio or video messages?

  • ” Give us firefox,”

we’ve had that since day 1, install linux

  • Ok i am not a fanboy of anysort. i have both systems 360 and PS3. I have found myself using PS3 more because of killzone 2 but i am still disappointed in the so many features PSN lakes over 360. i would rather pay a little and PSN get everything right instead of having to wait for stupid upgrades. First, it takes forever to update with all the installing and restarts, and lets be honest…who wants to wait months for 1 or 2 really seemingly (to PSN guys anyway) useful stuff and making us wait even LONGER for the updates that really matter and actually make a difference….Please dont get me wrong, like i said i am a neutral guy who plays games because i love them, not because of “coke is better then pepsi” bull…as for nintendo…i am 26, i am not a child.

  • Excuse me Eric, can you give me some hope for in-game XMB on my PS1 and PS2 games please, cause when i´m playing my PS1 games and i have a message, got to exit the game in order to read it and well, in PS2 i´m disconected from the net, please, at least give me a WE ARE WORKING ON IT please, please, please, thanks

  • I just played some KZ2 and experimented with the text chat, it’s really not all that bad. In fact it’s pretty useful! I still want in-game voice chat (so get to work on it), but this is actually a decent alternative – especially with those who don’t have mics. And uh, contrary to what I had thought, all you need to do is press the PS button and it brings you right to the text window. And I like that a message appears on the top right as well. Eric, good job.

  • Excellent update, and I’m glad you didn’t wait until you could also implement voice chat to release this. Not everyone wants to or can voice chat, and the quick access of the chat room from within a game is perfect.

While I don’t mind the character limit since it probably has to do with the in-game chat notification, I would appreciate if the censor were an option (but not for sub accounts for children).

  • @ 637
Yeah, arrange friends by status has always been there but now you can’t arrange by status alphabetically, only when they were last online. Seems existing features are being removed with new updates!

  • to myself…when i say 360 i mean Live service…sorry for those who are analyzers…

  • uugghhh….. really… text chat? I think pretty much everybody wanted cross game voice chat and as for the new way of sorting friends… why did u change that, now my friends are either out of aplhabetical order with the status sort or they’re in alphabetical order with the name sort BUT the ones who are online are all mixed in with the offline ones!!!! Why would you do that?!!! WTF?!! I have to scroll through a list of people just to see who’s online. This update is a huge fail.

Text chat?! really?!… come on sony, the xbots are laughing at us now.

  • .mkv playback?

  • Two requests:

    1. Can you PLEASE move the battery indicator from the upper-right portion of the screen to another corner? When I press the PS button on my controller to check the time, the battery indicator briefly covers the clock. This is annoying.

    2. Can you please make it easier to see when a friend has sent me message? I’m forced to open the Inbox to see if anyone sent me a message. The XMB should display these notices in some other manner, IMO.

  • this is a waste what you need to create is a playstation party!!! So that we can talk to each other no matter what we are doing or playing. that would be so much better and easier than stopping your game to type out what you wan to say. please please make a playstation party. It would make psn way better than xbox live.

  • @ Techni..

I tried linux on the PS3 a while back it was way to sluggish, so I keep waiting for a very lite build ver to try again in the future, just not enough memory I think.

  • Also, could we recieve some alerts sony.Like say for instance!I want to know who comes online with a notification sound!

  • …and yet custom psn friend list naming has not been added. Seriously, guys, its something that instant messaging programs have been doing for ages now, where you can rename people in your friends list for your viewing ease. It’d help a lot.

  • @ IISanitariumI……

that is exactly what i am talking about, the whole lacking of features that SHOULD be there especially this generation!!! add alerts most of all with a little sound..read my post above

  • What about the ability to play with different PSNids simutaneously on the same console. Microsoft has that ability so when will we get it?

  • Okay. This is update is great. I just hope that for the next update, they have cross over text and voice that. Like you could text or chat with friends and still be able to do that when your changing and playing different games during the chat session. That would be a nice addition. Also, they should allow four people to log in to their Playstation Network accounts simultaneously, like on the XBOX 360; that way, everyone can earn trophies, and participate in Network events simultaneously with 4 people on the same console. If these two updates/changes were made, I would be the happiest Playstation Network user. Please sony, make these changes, and we’ll all(us playstation fans) be a LOT better.

  • And just to confuse us they’ve swapped around the “sign in” and “forgot password” buttons and as I normally click the sign in button without looking at it, its just taken me 5 attempts before realising they’ve been swapped. Doh!

  • OK I think that there needs to be a chat were two people from different games can talk. Then fix how hard it is to connect with your friends in games not pointing fingers(cough…cough COD4).
