Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:
Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

The XMB speed does not seem much faster, and the battery icon isnt moved! :( also avatars are usually updated here and then from time to time through psn not Firmware, sooo….
Sony sed ps3 will last 10 years, well im sure they want to strech there updates a whole 10 years, i say put as much effort as possible to put in the best feauters, or better, i remember a long time ago, there was a poll for i think ps3 or psp, but asked what we wanted in the next FW, they should do that next.
What? where is the voice mail messages and friends levels when you scroll?
The text chat seems rather redundant… I mean, I like it and all, and free is free, but we already had text messaging available in-game. So, I dunno, I find it hard to be excited for this.
I don’t know why people are acting stupid. No one from sony said they would have all XBL features nor voice chat.

i dont wanna download it through my ps3. . .since i have a slow connection.
ill download it on my laptop and stuff it in a memory stick.
i was hoping for a better update. . .oh well

WOW…just updated my system. FW 2.70 is total garbage….text chat is useless, u cant even pull up the chat room box during the game…u have to stop and pull up the XMB and go into it…its basically the same thing as sending a regular damn message. WEAK
I know this update is a step in the right direction however it still not that good ( for us in European territories).
Here is a comment from a forum I go to “Excellent…..I can now back up the movies that I can’t purchase from the PS Store!!”
Anyways……………..put simply…..you have until either end of year or Firmware 3.0 , which ever comes first, to get CROSS GAME VOICE CHAT into one of the firmware updates. 1 on 1 (or 1 on 2) chats are fine with me.
There wass a rumor of being able to log in to more then one PSN on one PSN at the same time. Was there any truth to this?
I have thought about it more and would say this is great.
We have a AIM like service now.
It is faster and more convenient than the normal message system, and I don’t always want(or can’t) to chat anyway.

Now let’s just hope a feature is added like this to backup demos and game install/update files onto an external HDD.
Especially ones where they are so massive and include many updates from the server (ie. Burnout Paradise for us with original disc, and Midnight Club with the new map update).

yeah, now that i’ve seen the video, i think it is pretty useless.. i was under the impression that the message would pop on the side of the screen and you can reply while still playing.. similar to pc games.. i want to be able to type while i play, not pause the game then type
pretty lame feature.. but maybe this is the platform for in-game voice chat, which i don’t really need..
I just did the update and the option for voice chat is in there but not accessible wile in-game :(

Well hey, it was a rumor to being with and with all rumours, hype is a powerful way of getting people to beleive these updates are what they think it is. Sony may put it in later just not yet. I do hope Sony steps there game up and focuses on the PS3 at least 98% now that ps2 is 100$ they shouldnt have to worry bout it anymore, games made for ps2 are now DEVs doing, Sony shouldnt have to worry about PS2 anymore, as for psp, im sure they are working on the PSP HD or PSP2 which btw is a rumor so far. Dont forget that money is tight these times and it will only get worse before it gets better…
all this chat is well and good but i would REALLY like to play my music and play games at the same time. with the 360 having it all ready game makers wont ever build it into the game so its up to playstation to enable this for all the music lovers and gamers
The only thing I find that I like about this update is text chat.
I still want to see trimming video chat and voice chat because I feel like the two take up way too much bandwidth or at least have an option to send/receive a certain amount. Not all of us have the greatest connection and getting a better connection is not an option in my case.
My friends and I have to use ventrilo because that thing takes up almost no bandwidth while we are playing games on PS3

Holy crap, so much whining about a feature that I wouldn’t use. Why the hell would you want to talk to someone who isn’t playing your game. I do like the addition of dynamic normalization, now I don’t have to use my amplifier’s. It would be sweet if there were more visualizations or if we could make our own like how we can customize our GUI. I feel bad for you eric, jeff gets to interview all the GOW3 personel while you get to deal with this mess.
Do you get payed to say this stuff people? This firmware is useless. When we’ll we have the vocal chat in game? What is the point of this firmware? to organize my friends list? who cares. Get something done Sony, you are loosing fans.
@486/487, yeah i never used the chat function so i admit my stupidity here :D, i’ve just downloaded it though and im pretty disappointed, while this text chat feature is nice, its still going back to the xmb when i wanna send a message :\

Chat is good but don’t like the new “sort by” it makes it confusing when you want to find a friend, please make the old alphabetical way available. =(
The point of this firmware is still just to waste people’s time, time that I’d rather be spending PLAYING a game.
Give me the option to SKIP these stupid updates until a time of MY choosing, Sony.
Then, I’ll stop complaining about this useless garbage. Otherwise, I despise when they say they’re releasing some crap firmware, since it’s usually junk that serves no purpose for me.
