Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

1,717 0

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.

As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.

  • mateen 110.. maby the people want the first thing but not the others.

    *divx7, is it coming?
*more enchantments when music is playing

  • Please, please provide this same type of application for music. The current playback/playlist functionality nearly useless.

  • This is all great

..but PS3 users want other things.

    Please listen to us.

    We want
    1. Be able to send voice messges.
-Come on Sony we are in 2009….Send text is so old and irritating.
    2. Be able to have in Game Private and Party Chats.
-Kind of annoying when we get an invite to a chat and have to quit the game…
    3. Be able to join in someones game from XMB.
-If my friend is playing Call of Duty WaW..let me join his online party!!!
    4. Finally, we want to see what the person is doing in the game…
-If he is playing Rock Band..tell us what he is doing in rockband! Is he/she playing online? Or Carrer? Tell us what song? If they are playing COD World At War…tell us what they are doing.. Are they online? if so what game mode?

Can we see these updates in 3.0? Will we see these updates EVER? Probably not, but writing this paragraph was well worth it…

Copy and Paste this if you think this is what sony should do…!

  • My account migration worked!

  • Mine still says the PSblog name. Glad, but I thought it was supposed to be the PSN ID.

  • a lot of people are asking for cross-game chat and multiple-psn id log-ins, but it seems like those are the type of features that will come in a bigger update, like 3.00.

i think right now they’re trying to add more value to secondary features like music, photo, and video to encourage and give people reason to use them, which i don’t think is a bad thing.

yes, there are other features that are much more in demand, but don’t be so quick to shoot down everything that isn’t cross-game chat or other heavily requested features.

  • @392 I own a 360 and I would still love these features.

  • Figured as much – nice to see we have an update after the holidays and starting the new year (and a new president)!!

So what can we expect? Enhancements, fixes? Guess I’ll find out soon enough…

  • I’m hoping .mkv support is in either this update or in an update in the near future.

  • Fricken awesome!

  • Thanks Eric, always nice to see enhancements for our PS3.

I actually look forward to these updates.

  • Cool more DIVX support might come in handy later.. But any way I thought our PSN ID’s were suposed to be used from now on well my PSN account name is not vandam it’s zombie9.. so I don’t see a diffrence.. and why does it still use my old account name???

  • Just noticed my Avatar from the PS3 came over today….nice feature !

  • This is all fine and well, but when are other players going to be logging in with their accounts? As of now only P1 earns trophies.

  • Coool Beans!!!!

  • I’ve gotta admit, this is pretty slick. But now I’m wondering if the interface might be too intimidating for older folks, who I would imagine are the people most likely to actually use any of the photo album features (yes, I realize the PS3 user base leans *very* heavily towards the younger set).

  • Hey I see our playstation network ids can now be used to post replies.. I don’t like this username, is there anyway to unlink it with my playstation network ID?

  • @403 Sorry for the posting flood (don’t ban me!) but in-game XMB came in 2.40 so it doesn’t have to be 3.00, 4.00, or 5.00 that the features we want will come in. I’m sure Sony knows what we want (cross-game invite system, in-game private chat, and in-game music in all games).

  • kudos for the update….psn sign in rocks…i kept forgetting my other name…so i hardly ever commented…probably still won’t but i’m always reading….let’s go ps3!

  • BTW, any fixes for the media server, ie mpeg4 playback, etc? I know I’m not the only one yet after 2.53 I’m unable to play half of my mpeg4 movie collection from my media server. I know it worked before and was curious if someone can chime in if they are seeing this too?

  • Very nice. But i hope in a future update that there will be ingame music. Hope you guys are listening. Will definitely use this new addition.

  • I’m thinking of getting my mom a PS3 for herself after I let her borrow mine for BluRay and she loved watching photos on the big screen in HD.

This only prompts me to pick one up sooner.

A question: will this photoviewer make good use of the BluRay remote? This viewer seems really advanced, accessibility will be a huge issue, it would be great if the Remote was highly utilized and great thought was put into how it could be used to make this easy to use for non-gamers.

highlander2015 said: “Would you rather have Cross-game voice chat be released with glitches, bugs and flaws, or would you rather wait a month or two to see Cross-Game voice chat in pristine condition?”

How about pristine cross-game voice chat 2 years ago? Fact is, it’s a standard that has existed now for 3 years. Waiting another “month or two” seems pretty ridiculous. I personally think Sony should strike a balance between gaming features and non-gaming features.

I was considering getting my mom a MacMini instead of a PS3, but I figured the BR Remote would be more convenient than a mouse, for viewing pics on the TV. But the fact is, a cheap PC can do much of the multimedia stuff…so Sony should focus on gaming as well.

  • this looks kool, but in-game music for all games would be nice :D

  • Pretty weak update, I’m sure a lot of hard work went into it though so kudos for that.

    Also, “Test”

  • why are there so many negative people in here.

this is a wonderful addition. i use my ps3 for slide shows all the time. i made a barrack obama one for class todeay and got an A

you guys are awesome, keep up the good work!

  • Wow, thanks for the DIVX support. I just wish we could play music while in game. That would make Burnout Paradise so much easier on the ears :)

  • Thank you Sony! Divx 3.11 support finally! Now i can unhook my labtop from my TV for watching movies.

  • This is pretty cool. When are you guys gonna start using some of your muscle, like the sony music and movie divisions. You should have at least all your movies on your own video store. New movie trailers exclusivly available to the playstation network. Also exclusive music and videos available to the psn before mtv. C’MON SONY GET ON THE BALL. This is crunch time.

  • Pretty cool feature list there. Is that controller battery moved from overlapping the time yet?

:P Sorry, it’s just a little thing I had to mention.

  • This is cool and all but i want PSN enhancements such as invites, etc

  • pretty sweet

  • @ 424
Burnout Paradise DOES support custom music tracks. While in game press right on the D-pad and you’ll find the option in that menu.

  • Still no news on cross game voice chat? damn. Also, why can’t I still not listen to my own music on GT5 Prologue when Eric showed us the feature using that game?

  • Nice… I’m hungry for more. Give me more weapons to brag about my PS3.

  • When we could get a Fw. that allows us to open the browser while we’re at a game? That would be awesome =P

  • This is Cool!!!!

  • Eric is a God among men.

  • BTW, Eric, what about the glitch where if a user changed their password, it would affect trophies and game saves? Will 2.60 address that? I remember hearing that Sony was working on a fix for that.

  • With my PSN–I had to log out (I was automatically logged in with my old account name on the PS blog) then, upon signing back in, I could use and link my PSN id so now I am using it—thanks guys!

    HAPPY INAUGURATION DAY!

  • Where’s cross game chat? What about staying logged on to PSN while watching movies? A more efficient version of the XMB? PS3 is a games console first.

  • The auto sign-in(remembers user name and password) isn’t set up for the blog like it is for playstation.com.

  • @420:
I was just using the month or two as an example…I realize that we have been waiting a long time for this feature…But when you compare it to HOME, and In-Game XMB, our demand for this has been minimal up until recently, and therefore wasn’t seen as a demanded feature…Now that more and more people are posting asking for Cross-Game chat, dont you think that Sony might push this up as one of their top priorities? People will always be demanding more. It’s like when HOME launched. Everyone was excited for what? A week or 2 tops and then complaints and suggestions came rolling in. Sony could’ve held the launch date for HOME another year, but saw that this is what the people wanted, and therefore when they released it, HOME wasn’t fully ready, and did not meet all of the expectations that we had set for it…

  • Nice update. Feature add for saving playlists to video. Or Sharing photoshow with other members.

  • Nice – migration seemed to work. My wife should like these new photo gallery options.

  • This update is simply ridiculous!!! Rather than adding new pointless features, why not FIX the issues that many have been asking for & that Sony stated would be fixed back in December of 2006!!!!!!!

    GIVE US OUR 1080i/1080p UPSCALING!

The 360 can do it, so why not the PS3? THis has plagued the PS3 since it’s release and STILL has yet to be remedied. Lame.

  • This is awesome. You guys make the PS3 even more powerful, and media rich with every update! Keep up the good work.

  • What I really want for the PS3 Firmware is the ability to upgrade my hard drive and be able to keep my trophies on the PS3. I know they stay on my PSN account but I want to still be able to look at them on the PS3. You guys should be able to do this without people being able to exploit it. I need to upgrade SO BAD but I don’t want to lose my trophies on my PS3. Please fix this.

You could do it by just requiring that it’s a hard drive back up and you can only use the trophies on the PSN account on which they were earned. Then after you upgrade your hard drive you go to your profile and it syncs your trophies from your PSN profile to your PS3. I don’t see how anyone could take advantage of this if you do it right.
