Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

1,717 0

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.

As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.

  • Great I can post comments now! Woohoo! Great update btw, not sure how much I’ll use it though

  • Cool.

  • A step in the right direction. Good job Sony, now I REALLY don’t need to use my XBOX to play movies from my external HDD. Thank you! Cheers!

  • Another useless update. I hope this isn’t the big Q1 update.

  • thanks for the update, looking forward to see if there are any hidden features within this one.

  • @ Nathan J post 50

a ton of people care about cross game chat. just because you don’t does not mean “no one cares.” xbox is so successful partly because of its social features, and cross game chat is a huge one. sony should have it too. at this point it has to be some legal issue that is causing them not to implement it.

  • Snack Eeter here, this rules! I love PSB. Now we have a lot more people commenting

  • Oh, yeah… more avatars, too. A LOT more, please!? :)

  • First time on the site, and I must say getting my PSN account on this was quick easy and I must applaud the integration.

I would rather have seen party chat in game, better online integration and update the XMB slightly – like moving backgrounds and a whole host of new avatars please!
Allow companies to make them, or better yet, Sony as a publisher should make more of them.

I’m still chuffed by the integration btw.

  • nice update but useless to me. I don’t use my ps3 as a photo display, I use it for games.

divx 3.11 is quite nice, but is their any chance that extern subtitles will be suported?

  • As always, thanks for the update. I am glad to see all the new features and the possibilities the PS3 has to offer.

However, I think we need to focus on more important features that needs attention. For instance, does this update fix the trophy sync error? does this update allow in game xmb while playing ps1 or a blu ray movie?

I really appreciate this update as Sony is always thinking outside the box. PS3 photoshop here I come.

  • @336

i think them taking out the bc is why they lowered the price of the ps3…if they were to put it back now i think they’d have to raise price back up…im sure that people with the newer systems…not original like me…will soon get an emulator

  • Its an ok update, I was hoping for some extra PSN features like improved integration between Home and the XMB, extra friends list features like grouping of friends (perhaps access to other fellow members of one of 5 clubs you can join in Home).

  • Hi!

I’d like to see more cool psn trophy support features in the coming firmware updates.

  • It looks cool but I highly doubt most PS3 users care for it. It seems very pointless because we use the system mainly for Gaming. Music would be used on the system more if MORE games would allow you to play your own music while playing. There seems to not be much to look for on this system so far. SOCOM failed, XBOX won over GTA since they’re getting a downloadable addition to the game, HOME is a failure and Rip off (pretty lame to pay for virtual clothes and homes that do nothing for you). List can go on and on of the frustration with the system. I spend hundreds on this system to be bored with and find myself watching the same blue-rays over and over while I hear all these Xbox people in love with their purchase and 1 year later I’m still questioning my purchase.

  • I’m all for updates, especially when its free and improves or adds to existing software. However, I think like others have said, there are way higher priorities than this.

    – A better friends list that is easier to use when messaging people and checking messages. When using the current one if I get multiple messages and hit O I go all the way back to their name and not the list of messages. Its annoying.

    – Party invites to games

    – Cross game chat

    – Force developers or figure out how to have a working party system in games. This is just sad. IE /6 with Socom. That is terrible clan support.

I’m a big Sony fan but seriously, M$, and I cringe at bringing them up, is atleast doing the multiplayer features right. C’mon Sony!

  • that’s nice and all, but you know what would be better?

    PS2 backwards compatibility

  • I hate to draw this comparison, but since i have both consoles and the ps3 is my console of choice, it looks like i have to;Can you guys bring all the feature that XBL has to PSN. I know its a lot but im sure the hardcore would rejoice.

  • Good to see you guys still pumping out awesome firmware updates to the PS3.

Migration to PSN account was smooth. Would be awesome to be able to view my profile online and compare trophies with my friends though.

  • This is a nice improvement for photo viewing.

I’d love to see an advanced app for audio playback too. Something that would let you add or remove USB drives from your database of music. I’d also like to see an audio app have more advanced interfaces and capabilities.

The PS3 has the power to be a great media playing device with some more advanced software.

    Thanks.

  • Awesome, i like it

  • Can your turn off HDCP for gameplay, please?

I want to be able to play my PS3 on my PC monitor. Like I am able to with my Xbox 360.

I understand that you need HDCP for Blu-ray, and that’s fine because I have no intention of watching Blu-rays on my monitor. I just want to be able to play games while the girlfriend is watching EastEnders!

  • LAAAAAAAAAME, NOT COOOOOOOL.

Laurent would like it, but i don’t.

Europe is always [DELETED], where is Street Fighter HD? etc.

  • ..no seriously…. you have to say something about Private chat Eric…. you can’t ignore.. even not cross-game.. but private with friends it’a MUST for online gaming

  • Another great update Jeff!
I can see that everyone at Sony is trying very hard to stress that the Playstation 3 is more than a gaming machine. In fact, it’s a multimedia powerhouse!! I think that what people don’t realize is that it takes time to develop features such as Cross-game chat.. It’s just like HOME. Would you rather have Cross-game voice chat be released with glitches, bugs and flaws, or would you rather wait a month or two to see Cross-Game voice chat in pristine condition? All I’m saying is that Sony has put a lot of work into each and everyone of their updates and products….Keep in mind people, Sony has promised from the get-go that they will keep their online service free…With this comes drawbacks. One of the major one’s is that it will take longer for features to be developed. No one says that they will NEVER be released, it will just take longer to accumulate the resources necessary to be able to design a great, flawless, top-notch program….

Great job Sony, and keep up the AWESOME work!

@Jeff: Love the PSN integration, I kept forgetting my password to my PSBlog account, so i just created a new one here using my PSN account…It took less than 10 seconds…Works fine!

  • This is all great

..but PS3 users want other things.

    Please listen to us.

    We want
    1. Be able to send voice messges.
-Come on Sony we are in 2009….Send text is so old and irritating.
    2. Be able to have in Game Private and Party Chats.
-Kind of annoying when we get an invite to a chat and have to quit the game…
    3. Be able to join in someones game from XMB.
-If my friend is playing Call of Duty WaW..let me join his online party!!!
    4. Finally, we want to see what the person is doing in the game…
-If he is playing Rock Band..tell us what he is doing in rockband! Is he/she playing online? Or Carrer? Tell us what song? If they are playing COD World At War…tell us what they are doing.. Are they online? if so what game mode?

Can we see these updates in 3.0? Will we see these updates EVER? Probably not, but writing this paragraph was well worth it…

  • Very nice. The ability to access photos over a private home network would be nice too.

  • The one and only feature I now wish my PS3 had was .mkv playback.

  • voice chat while playing game pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaase

  • As with the others really.

It’s nice that these features are being added but there are so many simple additions that could be added (and should have been there since day 1).

I want to be able to sort my games & game data alphabetically like I can with my saved games. There just seems a complete lack of consistancy :(

This photo gallery is another example. Looks cool, yeah but it looks completely different to everything else, it’s starting to look like somebodies cobbling together various 3rd party applications rather than them being a nicly integrated set of tools.

  • The Photo Gallery thing is nice and all, but I don’t see it really being that useful until Picture Frames are integrated into Home, if ever.

We really need cross-game chatting and voice messaging.

  • Nice update guys :D. Any surprises in 2.60 (in-game voice chat, new avatars, in-game music, etc.)?

  • That photo gallery application is insane! Nice update!

  • Thanks for the update.

On futures firmwares updates please focus on gaming no in media capabilities.

  • When will we be able to play music while playing games, because it gets boring listening to game music.

  • custom avatars

  • Cool hope we see this soon. And I’m just going to test out the name thing…

  • @ Nathan J #50-
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    “implementing cross-game chat ”

    Oh shut up.

No one gives a damn about that stupid feature idiot. Go play with your RRoD box if that is so F-ing important to you.”
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It’s obvious that a lot of people, including myself care about this feature, and as PS3 owners we’re allowed to give input on what we would like to get out of the system. So don’t tell us what we can and can’t have an opinion on.

I feel like the messaging system is sluggish, having to go back and forth to my message box, replying, creating message, etc. when it would be really nice to be able to instantly communicate with friends on my list in a chat-like format.

Not only that, but I feel the other most important thing is a party system that allows me to quickly connect with my friends and hop into a game together, using voice chat within our group. Home is getting sort of close to this, but there really aren’t any games to launch at the moment, and you can’t really have group voice chat(unless you’re in the home or clubhouse space).

Anyway, it’s great to see new features coming out, I just feel we have a ways to go.

  • yes i can blog!!!!!and love this update

  • Photo and video features is something a very small population of PS3 owners actually care about. Future firmware updates should include what gamers want, including but not limited to:

Trophy support for highly popular games (ex: MGS4, Call of Duty 4, Grand Theft Auto 4…)

    Cross game chat. Essential.

A PSN game invite system, rather than having to invite thorugh in-game menus.

Ability for more than one PSN user to sign onto one console with seperate trophies.

These are just a few examples, but you should listen to gamers when updating the PS3 features, because we are your customers. You might even start to move more consoles with better features. Just a suggestion.

  • @50
Enough with the hate, I don’t own a 360 and I would love the feature. Part of it is because of the games that do support voice chat do not let you talk to your friends unless under specific conditions, like on the same team, or for Street Fighter you can only talk to the person you are going against during the match, after you are abruptly disconnected.

Part of this is just making friends and talking, the more this happens the more it will improve the community experience imo. This is something I always do on my computer, even though my friends are not playing the same game as me, we still enjoy each talking.

This is whats keeping me from “hanging out” with friends on PSN, instead I barely play games with friends at all. Communication should not be such a huge chore.

  • Uh oh, it’s not showing up as my psn name, Man I shouldn’t have linked the account I guess.

  • Eric,

Fantastic update but really guys. These are backseat features to what the community wants.

Top priority should be cross game/ direct chat. I want to talk to a friend no matter what I’m doing on xmb, or in what ever game.

Second should be fixing that clock / battery overlay cause its just VERY bad form in general.

I really think you guys need to check out this URL. This community member has STUNNING ideas.

  • To everyone knocking this update, we all want those big features, I’m sure Sony knows that. But don’t knock something that adds stuff to your PS3 that is FREE.

  • Let us try and unite together, and see if we can make change.

Please copy and paste this list on this blog page. Let us see if we can draw a response. Or in fact, how many they will ignore. One post alone will be ignored, we need to use the power in our numbers.

    —————

The following is a list of some of the most requested fixes/updates, by the gamers and for the gamers.

    -Cross Game Chat Utility
    -Updated/Custom Avatars
    -Customization of XMB (Font/Colors)
    -In-game Music Support
    -More Visualizations for Music
    -Clock Display
    -PS2 Software Emulation

All of these suggestions and requests can be found on one page of comments alone. But happen to be mentioned over and over.

Please answer us this, when will Sony begin to implement these things mentioned above and start listening more to their users?

    No more novelty utilities.

  • hey jeff

    what about DIVX 7 ?????

    we want it !!!
