Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

1,717 0

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.

As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.

  • What we REALLY need is incremental updates. This update has things that some people may want, but forcing EVERYONE to update by downloading a 140mb file for something they may never even use. Some might say “140mb is nothing to me”, but what about people on slow or capped connections? They may want to switch on and play a game online, then they see they have to download an update for something they may not even care about! This can really ruin someone’s session, it might take them an hour to download.

Is it really that hard to make updates incremental? Is Sony really not capable of this? It would also save on bandwidth costs. Everyone wins no matter how you look at it.

  • Jeff, Eric. I know this is completely off-topic but was/will there ever be an upgraded version of the theme builder that includes info on adding in custom sounds?? It would really help spice up my themes some more.

  • awesome update!!

  • Excellent product support. Another excellent addition to my multimedia hub!!

  • Is thi ONLY for photos or can it be also used in other media like music and videos?

  • I hate to be the grumpy one but this update made me disappointed. I do think the Photo Gallery is cool and all but why do you ignore us on other features that seems much more easier to add? Where’s the Friend-categories, MKV-support, RSS-support, Skype-support? And please add more avatars and move the battery-icon. Please??
Do this first before you start working on projects no one asked for!

  • AWESOME!!
but i thought there will be more new stuff but its alright for now

  • I’m not a big fan of this update. It kinda just shows you where their priorities lie. We should be getting cross-game chat, party systems, and cross-game invites. Not to mention custom soundtracks.

Picture viewing tools is really the last thing the XMB and PSN need right now as much as I hate to say it.

  • Thanks the great update i hope dat by the next update this be possible on the new Photo Gallery application that im missing is

    1) remote playfeature
    2) and that Photo Gallery can read the Picture’s on my cardreader

i hoop that this wil be on de next update..

Greetz From Holland keep up the good work

  • Lookin’ forward to it, particularly the DivX upgrade!

  • Another Innovative idea from Sony! I can’t wait to update my ps3!

  • PS2 compatibility!!!
Thats The Reason That i Have Buy The 60GB Version …
:) i dont complain over it

  • Wow, the site already paired up my email and PSN account… nice job, guys, can we expect to see any further web integration or better ID gamercard than the ones we have now (say, as to get more information on ’em or a new look/theme to ’em?)

  • wow that look cool so we can capture photos in a video and save them to our photo gallery ? hopefully. another great feature to our ps3s thanks guys we were way over due for an update but when we do get one its always a good one.

  • Nice update, I don’t have many photo’s installed on my PS3 though, I tend to stream them from my PC or external storage, and I’m guessing the application won’t work for photo’s on DVD/USB or over a Media Server?

It will be interesting to know how well the face/age/colour detection works, I have loads of uncategorised photo’s so anything that helps me sort them is a bonus!

Shame I can’t view that video while I’m in work, it may have answered some questions!

  • What about mkv support and srt subtitles?

  • Please Please Please can we have some sort of music searching or two tier grouping.
i.e. for sort by Album, have the alphabet characters then the albums.

Getting fro A to Z with a full music collection is pretty unusable

  • Thank you for the update.

  • Hello Eric Lempell, I doubt you will read a comment this far, but I would like to ask you something about the new Photo Gallery. I’m trying to copy multiple pictures to a new play-list there, but there is no function for that, I have to go back to the XMB if I want to add multiple, whereas in the Photo Gallery I can only add one at a time. Could you fix that? The Gallery is a very pleasant feature.

Not necessarily useful for me as I never used my PS3 for photos, but suddenly I feel compeled to do so!

  • The DivX 3.11 support is a nice addition, I had a few old movies in that format =)

I would also like to see the ability to log in with 2 psn accounts while playing 2 player games on one PS3.

  • wow…. “NathanJ”

You are probably the biggest fanboy i’ve ever seen on here… There is nothing wrong with the idea of implementing cross-game chat. In fact i think it’s a very good idea because it would make it easier to communicate with a friend who’s just logged on. I mean i guess if you wanted to quit the game your playing just to say hi or lets do something to a friend you could buth then i’d say your the “idiot” Nothing wrong with taking some ideas from other consoles (360) and doing it for your customer base.. i mean look at trophies.

Also for the love of all that is holy put out a firmware update for backwards compatibility with ps2 games.. you guys touted this feature when you announced the ps3 kinda dumb to phase out machines that cant do it anymore. That would be a real update… thanks

  • Can you confirm that this update fixed the error where you couldn’t access your saved game files if you changed your PSN email or password? If so, does it fix previously broken saves or just stop it happening again?

  • Maybe some way to add windows media center to media servers or itunes

  • * Please add these Features *

    – More Gamer Pictures (use PlayStation eye for gamer pic)

    – In Game XMB game invites (Developers shouldn’t have to build Basic Features like sending invites to a friend in there games, it should all be done in the XMB

    – In Game Music

    – To be able to record game footage and take your own screen shots & share them with fellow friends

    – XMB Clan Support system

    – Party system

(This Constructive Criticism, I’m no hater)

  • @1323

Try Java PS3 Media Server V1.02.1 it works Better than Windows Media Center

  • we need a tutorial on how to use this!!…
    plus skype!

  • woww koolllll

  • This is a sweet update !! Thanks for the continued Divx support. Thanks !

  • This is a fantastic update … the missus uses the PS3 for all her photos and loves showing them off to people when they come round. So not only does she show off her photos, she’s also demoing the PS3. She’s going to love these new photo features.

Now, how about A2DP headphone support :)

  • Ok so i can’t do cross game chat neither can i watch a DVD while downloading from PSN, but i now have TWO ways to look at pictures on my PS3. AHHHH!

  • SONY is the best keep up the good work guys …

But still theres lot of things i want to see in my Awsome black pearl machine :)

1- New user interface xmb it`s meh for me cause i think ps3 looks like futuristic why not its interface ?? i want to see more cooler interface ….

    2- MKV support indeeedd

3- custom soundtrack feature is joke

this game want support custom soundtrack WTF !! :D everything must support custom soundtracks

So you guys r Awsome hope we will se these features VEEERY soon

  • SONY seem to ignore the fact we want/NEED certain things…SONY know what they are, they’ve been mentioned a THOUSAND times here today already. Instead we get…another way to view pictures?!
The browser NEEDS an update. Please SONY…it’s ridiculous!

  • Ok PS3 Firmware update is good …
but … When can I see a upgrade that includes PS3 capability of reading subtitles files like (.srt) ??? – Please answer.

    Luis – Portugal .

  • When I installed the update all went smoothly. Then the new photo app returned an error upon loading. I decided to try a restart and now my PS3 is rebuilding the database in it’s own words. So here I sit, nervous as hell, waiting and hoping no info is lost. Way to scare the crap out of me Sony.

    Fingers crossed!!!

  • @ Supvic

I’ve had no problems updating my playstation 3 without even being online. I would get a USB pen, then download the update from playstation.com at work or at an internet cafe, take it home and choose to update via usb. If your connection is capped I suggest you use this method.

The gallery is a nice idea, but the divx support overshadows it in my eyes. I would have preferred a web browser improvement or the ability to view pdfs or something. A waste of development time really. Dont get me wrong is nice, and i’ll check it out (especially since my PS3 is filled with my digicam photos) but its a bit of a disappointment.

  • The custom soundtrack feature isn’t as easy as Sony just doing it. Developers literally have to build the game to support it as there is only so much hard disk bandwidth available (how much can be read off the hard disk at one time). A strain on this would put a strain on the efficient running of the game, if the game is demanding enough. This is why only low fi games support this right now.

I would definitely love to see support for more codecs, and an option to reincode play tv .m2ts files to Xvid and mp3 as 2gb for a film, or 1gb for an episode of Heroes is ridiculous. I’ve tried reincoding myself with virtual dub and a ton of other codecs. but its pretty hit and miss (occasionally perfect, but most of the time issues with encoding and lipsync).

  • I like it, its a good way to organize you photos, pretty cool. Nice Job. But i would love to have more music options, i want to be able to play My Own Music, while playing any type of game, Hopefully they add this to it, and its not only me , that wants those options, I’ll beat there’s more than a million people asking for that.Hopefully we’ll get it soon.I LOVE PS3

  • ..I’m sorry but PS3 already have ENOUGH NON-GAMING features…. and it’s great… but now please.. something FOR US GAMERS!! ..private chat…. you HAVE at least to say something.. seriously.. you can’t ignore.. most of us bought a PS3 for gaming………. just confirm you’re working on it or not…..

  • this is a good update like it alot but i’m still waiting for the in game music player how far out is that?

  • Yeah, all went smoothly and the photo doo-hickey works now.

  • oh, and my PSN name still isn’t showing?

  • @ DARK VINCENT

use the square button to select multiple photo’s, then use R1 to add them at once

  • Sweet updat. Just want to test PSN login. :)

  • interesting

  • One desire:

FULL DIVX7 support … and I will be happy :)

  • Thanks Auratus!

  • Please fix the volume bug on the official headset in the next firmware update.

  • I would rather have the ability to play music from the HDD during ANY game. The photo gallery is neat, but I will probably never use it.
