Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

1,717 0

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.

As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.

  • This is probably on the roadmap and probably way down the line still, but it would be really nice to see DVD folder support to play off a network share.

Add that and the PS3 will take a big lead over Windows Media Center!!!

Also, add native support for additional video formats like MKV.

  • I hate to be a nag, I’ve never posted before (mainly because I was too lazy to create a PSBlog account, so thanks for the PSNID integration!) but I have a suggestion to make this Blog better. I like that there is now a link with the number of replies on any given post, that’s helpful, but I really wish there was a “Next” and possibly “Previous” link in each of the red reply boxes.

For instance, clicking the “4 Replies” link on this post takes me straight to the very first comment. Not very helpful. From there I have to continue to search through all the pages for the other 3 replies. Luckily, two of them are on the first page. But that last one could be anywhere in the other 24 pages of comments.

Say someone chooses to reply to this post, that reply would be on the 25th or 26th page and someone looking for the replies would go through 24 pages before getting to it, and then they may find out that it’s not something they are interested in at all.

I don’t know how easy it would be to implement, but I think it’s a good suggestion. It would be nice to be able to jump straight to each of the replies.

Thanks for hearing me out, the Photo Gallery looks great, by the way.

  • I just updated to 2.60 this evening and was upgrading my hard drive. After putting in the new hard drive, the PS3 is requesting a 2.6 system update that does not appear to be available online to place on my usb flash drive. When can I download 2.6 using my PC?
    Any suggestions?

  • I was really hoping that it would be a better update

  • It messed up my sound. I have surround sound through the HDMI and it gave me an error sending sound through it. I had to reset everything to get it to work.

  • Impress me AND my wife by adding the Photo sharing BACK into Home!
SUPER Impress us with the capabilities to share family home videos on HOME.
We use home for our families on the West Coast and on the East Coast, but the features were pulled from HOME…PLEASE ADD THEM BACK!
Our Families are missing what you took from PSHOME!!

  • 1254th!

As a photographer i hope to have fun with this. Need to get the 13 gigs of photos off my hdd space though. =| mostly just testing the new sign in thing.

  • Eric, this is a great addition to the media capabilities of PS3.

Will v2.6 fix the DLNA 2101 issues with media server access. From many bloggers, including myself, it appears v2.53 broke the DLNA media server access and we are getting errors and cannot access our pictures or music.

Keep up the good work . . thnks.

  • Thanks a lot for this update! It was really a great update and I hope to see more soon! :)

  • According to the PlayStation Forums you guys haven’t remedied the emulator that was broken in 2.50 with Tomb Raider 1&2. Both these games were working before the update and are not working on at present. While not a TR person myself (at least the pre CD days) I would like to think that you guys are still giving BC users a bit of your time and concern regardless of sony’s current ill-made decision.

  • Good lord, the update to the photo library is taking forever. It’s been about 15 minutes and it’s stilllllll going! It would be nice to have this happen in the background.

  • i’ll stand behind everything you guys/girls do to improve the functionality of the ps3. After all i spent alot of money on my 60 gig to be prepared for the future. Thanks for the hard work keep it up!

  • Well, the photo stuff does look pretty cool.

I do want to echo the sentiments of 66 and 69 (and no doubt others) about having compatibility with more containers and codecs.

Also, if I could play video files, from a windows shared drive, and have surround sound work (playing files with a 5.1 channel Dolby Digital sound track come out as stereo), I’d be set

  • It would be also nice to be added Samba/Windows share support :)

  • Hey Jeff I am kind of a pack rat when it comes to collecting trophies and i was wondering if we are going to see the inclusion of a trophy room in Home.

  • You Should Take a look here :

    http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3updates&thread.id=43648

This person seems to have spent a lot of time on designing this and I think you and your team should look at it and take into consideration as to what he shows and try to update some of the things he shows, Thanks in advance.

  • YO FOR REAL THOUGH I CANT PLAY NONE OF MY GAMES WHEN I PUT MY DISK BACK IN IT DOESNT EVEN SHOW UP ON THE GAME MENU LIKE THIERS NO GAME IN THE PLAYSTATION I PAID ALOT OF MONEY TO HAVE THIS AND YALL GAVE ME A BAD DOWNLOAD!!! KAN YOU PLEASE FIX IT!!!

  • Sweet

been lookin forward to a new divx update since i use my external HD to play my movies on my ps3 and most are in divx format

    keep up tha good work
hope to see something PSN/Game related in the next update

  • My blog screen name still shows up like before. Shouldn’t it be showing my PSN ID an Avatar now? The Avatar is my PSN ID’s but not the ID itself.

  • @1267 sony says its just a glitch that will correct itself overtime….

  • make that @ghostm

  • Alright for PSN ID’s! Oh wait, I always had them as one and the same. :-)

  • sheet but what ’im really looking forward to is voice messaging. and custom tracks for every game. are ya working on it ?

  • Pretty neat update. However, as soon as I updated my system, i couldn’t log in to PSN via PS3, heck, it doesn’t obtain my IP address. Hopefully, it’s temporary and I should login in the morning.

  • hay none of yall didnt have problems with trying to play the game after the download?

  • really nice, but the “picture section” is the useless one (in my opinion”, you should try to enhance the music player, qhichi sould be able to sort by rate, such as itunes, with larger album pictures, if u have itunes set on full screen, that’s really niice? i think sony ericsson has about the same “coverflow” on uts touch cell…

  • After updateing my ps3 crahed. Will I be covered even though my ps3 is out of wantey?

Is there a problem with the fireware?

  • I think the update screwed up my wireless connection. I can’t connect to PSN at all. I completely reset all the network and system settings and started from scratch. Rebooted both the PS3 and router with no luck. All other wireless devices on my network are working fine. Anyone else having trouble logging onto PSN after the update? Oh and it is saying it can’t find my network settings, not that it can’t connect.

  • Anyone know if this update will allow photo-gallery to browse through RAW files?

  • While I’m sure lots of people put plenty of work into this new program, I’m not sure it really fills a need that anyone had. The old sideshow was already way slicker than it needed to be.

Dear PS developers, please stop adding new features and decide what to do with the ones you already have! For example, Home; I want to be able to have my buddies over in my apartment and watch trailers off my hd or look at pictures of a trip we took together or leave notes on their door for them!
This is just another ‘thing’ you will have to support and update, like ‘Life with Playstation’ which is even less useful than Home. Please, focus your time and manpower on one project at a time. I really do appreciate all these new features, but I wish you would slow down and make them into something meaningful first.

In any case I look forward to seeing what this can do. I just hope that the PS3 can regain some focus

  • Nice features, hope the next one with game related enhancements is soon to be released.

    Keep up the excellent work.

  • Just updated, nice update.

The Photo app REALLY needs UPnP support… a lot of us don’t keep our photo galleries on our actual PS3s.

  • Sweet.
    Lovin The Update.

  • My PS3 doesn’t want to turn on and I too get a green/yellow light followed by a blinking red one :'(

  • i mean when i download it.oops.

  • Awesome update. I use my PS3 for gaming and for streaming media to the downstairs 61″ TV, so the more codecs the merrier :). If it supports .mkvs with the DivX 7 update I’ll be in heaven. And the Photo Gallery looks pretty great. Sorting by people smiling or not? age groups? amazing :).

  • thebadnews: do you really think its ONE team working on EVERYTHING? I bet they have specific teams set on specific tasks… just a guess.

  • StrangeAttractor: if you can manage to get the file into a .divx container file it should still have the 5.1 sound, and let you turn subtitles on/off from the PS3 if you have any.

  • The update looks cool! Can’t wait to try it out!!

  • I have been with playstation while other kids were playing sega genesis.I am a die hard playstation backer & all i want is for you to fix the bugs in your call of duty games.I saw my cousins xbox version & he gets no connection problems! If i need to pay a yearly subscription to make it work better i would & im sure so would other gamers. Please perfect it i know your the better company! Signed Old School

  • I don’t want to sound mean but: Why!? I don’t need a photo browser for my PS3. My computer does it better than PS3 can and it’s pretty rare that I want to show a group of people in my living room a slide show of pictures anyway. Seems like wasted effort. AppleTV tried to do this and it is also useless.

  • i agree with vince_the_biker PS3 BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY so we can play ps2 games its 2 much of a pain to hav 2 playstation consoles taking up the plugs in the tv it totally pointless backwards compatibility will be the best update by far if it came out

  • Nice Update
But please Speed Up the downloads, it takes forever to download firmware and demos.

  • Agree with shadow2797… make an easy browsing through all the red replies, so we don’t need to search for them by looking through all the pages…..

  • THANX JEFF

  • Will we ever see MKV support on the PS3???

  • Hi there everyone ^^,I’m a playstation gamer since 1996 and I like play ever at my free times XD and now I did the effort to buy a PS3 160 GB , but I did’nt know that this version don’t have backward compatibility and I wanted play my favorites PS2 games there because I sold my PS2 sistem , so …What I have to do ? Buy a PS2 again ? =( . I would like for the next update some software for others PS3 that don’t have backward compatibility to get it , doesn’t matter if have a little cost at the PSN , but I really hope , If that is posible I will be grateful and happy ^-^ . If someone is agree with me support me , Well that’s it for now , good bye .

  • “As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.”
Do you REALLY want to hear my feedback?
    Concentrate on something more useful.
I mean: in-game chat, PS2 compatibility, free region on PS1 games, faster Home, MKV video compatibility.

That’s what people want, not this!

  • Well I notice that my ps3 is booting a little faster. Too bad that I lost my hdmi output last night after a botched YDL install. Anybody know how to fix that?
