Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.
The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.
The 2.60 update also includes:
- Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
- DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.
Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.
As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.
This is neat, but I hope the current issues with the PS3 are addressed soon in future updates instead of the addition of unnecessary, though cool, features.
(Such as in-game music for all games, cross-game voice chat, the web browser freezing up and making me reset the PS3, etc)
Can you fix the random PSN message freeze? thanks…
Just a suggestion, and not trying to be a jerk here. But… perhaps we could get some better support for the DLNA Media Server? I mean, I have a clean install of Vista and I still get errors all the time! Also, is there ever going to be .AVI support for the PS3!? I mean, it’s the most widely used video format in the world! Why wouldn’t you want that on your home multiple-media device? Other than that, glad to see you guys are working your butts off for us! I’m still a Sony only lover here!
looks good
To #50 cross game chat is a very wanted feature, just because you don’t want it doesn’t mean others don’t either. Anyways I really like how you all (PSN Team) are working to better the overall PS3 experience. This is a very nice addition! That being said can you drop a hint as to whether or not you are looking to improve the online functionality of the PS3. Thanks!!!!
Actually, I think implement voice chat in the PSN where you could chat with people, no matter the game, would be great. I love how things are, and after trying out the feature on…that other console, it is useful. Start small, Sony, implement the structure, then, you know, give us the treat. Here’s hoping to having it by summer.
I’M IMPRESSED. thought you guys forgot about us for a second. Now if we can get an application like this for the video section and music with picture art support that’ll be great.
Definitely a cool program. I would agree that this may not appeal to heavy gamers but it will be a nice feature to show off to people when they come over to visit. I’m sure my wife will enjoy it for all her photo collections. The two features I would enjoy seeing is cross-game chat and music visualizers. Thanks again for all your hard work!
Awesome. Kind of similar to the new features in iPhoto ’09 but way more graphical. Would also be nice to see new slideshow themes as well as a new music theme. Haven’t seen a new one of those for a LONG time (the solar system one being the most recent and that was like, what, over a year ago?).
Now the big question: when?
sounds cool. i’m looking forward to using the photo section of the xmb for once.
Also Sony please if/when you implement a new feature such as cross game chat it would be extremely wise of you not to leave it up to the game developer to implement this feature. You all put so much hard work into adding great features into your system such as in game music and photos. Yet you leave it up to a developer to actually implement it. Whenever you add a new feature it should be REQUIRED for all games to have it day and date with the launch of that feature.
hmmmm ok so……although this is nowhere near my fav update, i’ve been adding alot of pictures to my ps3 just to take advantage of the update….i gotta do something until killzone2 gets here!!!!….
Loving 2.60fw but i got a error saying my hard drive need to be rebuild but funny thing is that my pictures had ghost file meaning that i can’t delete the folder because i get a error, well with 2.60fw it fix that problem my building my mess up pictures & fixing them.
Right on~ always appreciate new media features. One thing I would LOVE to see is a more robust back up feature. We should be able to select certain file types for backup. I would like to back up all my save files without backing up my full PS3. As it stands i would have to back up all my save files piece by piece and with 130 + saves that is not functional. Anyway thank you for the enhanced photo management. Keep up the good work.
This a great update. I use my ps3 for everything. I have all 3 systems [Wii, 360, PS3] nd each of them has their quirks..but the ps3 is much more useful in the end. 360 bad hardware esp. if you bought it when it 1st came out [i get the constant red rings of doom]. My wii is ok, i like the miis tho their creepy, nd Wii games kinda suck. PS3 hasnt let me down. I love her [yes it has a gender and a name = pinky]… Just can we plz get trophys for MGS4 nd can we plz be able to stay signed in while playin ps2 games? i like 2 play persona 4 nd still send nd recieve messages.
For all ppl who commented nd will comment. Each system HAS TO BE DIFFERENT, with DIFFERENT CAPABILITIES. The variety is what much makes the systems better. ULTIMATE SYSTEM = NO MORE ADVANCES IN GAMING TECHNOLOGY. I DNT KNO ABOUT YOU, BUT I WANT 2 SEE WHAT EACH COMPANY COMES UP WITH NEXT, SEE HOW GREAT THEIR CREATIVITY IS.. nd maybe help create some with my own creativity.
SO STOP NAGGIN ND ENJOY THE GAMES!!!!
Is there going to be MKV video support in DivX 3.11?
Why is it everytime i sit down to play a lil Ps3 online I have to download a stupid update sony needs less time on their hands or something because it seems like everytime i turn around i have to download a retarded update
First comment, thanks for implementing the PSN thing it was alot easier to convince me to talk…
Anyway hopefully it’s not too late someone can answer this. Say I have family coming over and I want to show my pictures on my TV instead of my bulky laptop. Could I easily install it then uninstall it to save space?
Mainly is it easy to install, uninstall, install. Or is it an install and it’s on there for good? Thanks if you can answer and thanks again for the PSN name thing.
DIVX 3.1? How about DIVX 7!!!!!
The Photo Gallery has really nice and friendly interface. Love it, kudos to the team.
That’s great in all. I think i’ll use it. :-)
Will you be able to sync Walkman X1000 with the Playstation 3? I’d really enjoy if we could download playstation store movies, tv shows, photos, and game trailers to it. That’d be cool.
Chris
waw, an update and so much changed , omg ,waw so much change omg sony thanks for your update and to take the BC from all thanks
I would like to say first of all thanks for the hard work you guys put into making this wonderful picture software for the greatest console ever made, the Playstation 3. And second I really love the new features cause my wife loves it hehe…but anyways I’m still looking forward to a possibility of having music played in the background with more titles old or new in the future, so my question here would be is when can we expect to see this added in the future?
Will not download from the console and the 2.60 is not available online yet?? Site only has the 2.53 still…. Can not get online to play tonight!!!!
@Eric that app froze my PS3 what the flock is up with that
Thanks for all your hard work and continued support of the PS3!
Will we ever see dual sound output on the PS3 (HDMI and optical at the same time) I got the Ps3 plugged into my tv with the HDMI and the optical in the home theatre and it would be so much more easier if it could do both at the same time then having to switch between the two.
Hey, I currently have the 80 Gig version of the PlayStation 3. It has a lot of features that I enjoy. However, there is at least one key feature that is missing in my opinion. From prior experience, I know that if you want to listen to your own music while playing your game, you can do that. But we cannot as Sony users. I would like a firmware update to provide this feature.
Thank You.
John, West Virginia
hopefully this divx update will fix the problem i seem to be having since 2.50…only half the divx videos play.
hey, how about some love for canadians? let’s make the video downloads available for canadians on the PSN.
@1228 Vinny Dislivio.
Maybe if Canada didnt have those stupid strict copylaws that take years to complete, you’d have it already.
that’s a great update
hey, how about some love for canadians? let’s make the video downloads available for canadians on the PSN.
When will this be online? I’m at 7% and it’s been 30 minutes. Can’t we use a USB Storage device for this? What the hell…
My ps3 is very slow at downloading updates. Why isn’t the update on this website? Why are the firmware updates so hard to find, it’s the only reason I come on playstation.com. Why thankyou Eric Lempel for making it impossible for those of us who don’t want to wait 3 hours/can’t download the update at all, to play online. Mine takes 3 hours, my friend’s doesn’t work at all. What the hell am I supposed to do. It just doesn’t make sense that it can’t be up on the internet as well.
Is there any way to get rid of the crap icon that is photo gallery? I have no use for it so I don’t see why it should be on my PS3.
Hey NathanJ *I* would like cross game chat. It is a feature that a huge amount of people would like. I would also like to see home begin allowing game launching. I don’t own a box.
BTW when is there going to be a DL link to the firmware for both this and the PSP update?
Thanks ^__^
I think the most pressing update would be the ability to mute microphones that you do not want to hear for reasons such as profanity or rudeness, to mute all microphone activity, to allow you to select which ones would be allowed, or which ones would be blocked, preferrably all 3 possible types of blocking options. That would allow a stronger control over what comes out of my speakers and lessen the chance that someone would be able to continuously offend everyone in my home.
It would also be nice if you allowed voice chat with people on your friends list while in a game that they are not in so you don’t have to leave the game just to talk to them. (texting takes a long time and can get you booted from games for inactivity, if all you need to do is send a message and wait a second for a reply its ok but while I’m waiting I like to be playing and if I’m playing a game and stop to answer messages I might die or lose or something wheras if I were only talking there would be no need for me to change over to texting and lose my game.)
A network browser would be nice so I could get access to media files stored on my PC instead of having to waste space by duplicating them all on my PS3 or a removable drive.
Another feature that I really want added is the ability to play music no matter what game I am in. Most of the times I mute the music of the game and turn my own on anyway, I really wish I didn’t have to set up my own music player separately and could just have my ps3 play it in game.
Now I don’t know if anyone wants to flame me because I’m suggesting features that a competing game system has but flaming me would be ridiculous considering I only ever play Playstation hardware and I only suggest these features because they would improve my experience.
These features would also allow me to get more ps3 systems for my neices and nephews so they could play online games without having to worry about people screaming profanities on the microphones as some people seem to want to do.
And finally, the ability to have multiple playstation network profiles on the same machine, because I share this current machine with my neices and nephews right now, so I want them to be able to rack up their own trophies. A logout option would be the first step for the network options, so I could log them in to their own account rather than having to restart the machine every time.
Thanks for any considerations you can give for these features.

any more update comming for the games i like those ones
Wow, it really is impressive that the software knows how old the person in the picture is, and whether or not they are smiling.
Even though I don’t have much of a use for all of this, I can definitely appreciate how great it is.
Looks interesting, not a huge change, but nice.
What is with the sound in the stand up segment in the video?
I used to work as a videographer in Sony Canada’s BPG dept.. you guys need me again?
yo this download is realy bad i downloaded it and now my ps3 wont read my disks none of my games or movies now yall need to fixz this please
@USArmyFL
how’d you download it? it’s not even out yet
I can’t even log onto my account since this came out, whats wrong?
We want .mkv support NOW! We spent a lot of money for a promising media center, which does not support mkv files! Jesus!
Also, my external HD (WD Passport) doesn’t appear in the home menu anymore! ;-(
test comment…good job with PSN merger I can actually bother posting now instead of watching from the side.
