Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

1,717 0

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.

As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.

  • i think its really cool how every time we receive a new update, it’s never something totally useless. every update we get makes the ps3 better then it already is

  • I like the new update…but I would of rather seen more with the PC-Music playing. I want to be able to play whole bands, not just individual folders. You should look into that for a 2.61 update. Also, cross game chat and better friend list workings (including custom lists). But I am looking forward to better PC-Music playing, if it is possible.

  • the internet connection i have is too slow or something for my PS3 to download updates directly to it, so i usually download updates from the website. why does it always take a day or two for the update to be downloaded on this website?

not to just complain and complain, but it gets irritating when i can’t sign in to play online until i download this new update, which i cannot obtain for a couple days. wouldn’t it make a bit more sense to make the updates available for download from the website before making it mandatory to update your PS3?

it would really help me out a lot if the update could be available from the website in at least a couple hours after it is released over the network.

p.s. sorry if what i said was confusing – if it’s a problem I’ll try and explain it again.

  • Thanks Jeff for all the support coming from you and your team for the PS3 and PSP for the PS Network. Im happy to be right here, because i feel like i am in a ever-envolving community always expecting the best for the next update.

Again thanks to all the Playstation Staff for give us very happy moments and keep on guys with new and awsome features and Only On PS.

  • I’ve tried out the new Photo Gallery! I really like the layout and it does help to make the slideshow creation process a lot easier! But, I would have liked some more photo editing type features… Like adding stickers, color filters, or borders to each individual picture.

But, it’s still a very neat little program, and I like how it came with some new music files. Overall, the presentation is really nice and easy to navigate, while still being pleasant for the eye to behold!

Thanks Sony for another nifty program! I’m already anticipating our next surprise!

  • What a great idea!! A worthless media update that prevents me from playing online video games until I download it! Attention morons at Sony: PS3 is for games first, and the fact that the download is already available through the system and not on this website means no COD4 tonight, or any other online game, as I compete with millions of other people going throught the same ordeal trying to download the update at the same time. I guess I will be back to gaming sometime next week at the rate it is going, despite my cable internet. Thanks a lot, retards…

  • I’m sure its going to be a cool update, but something really needs to be done about the download time, its been 15 minutes and im not even at 35%. I don’t know if this can be fixed with an update or its always going to be like this, but i hope something is in the works.

  • @#1141
ummm… what rock have you been under? They added Flash 9 support a loooong time ago. I will agree the browser is pretty slow though

OT: Great update, though I really wish you;d make it so we can access the XMB while watching movies and especially while in the PlayStation Store… though considering you are giving us all this stuff for free, I guess I don’t really have any right to complain…. (not that I would anyway)

  • Thanks for the update. I hope we get in game music soon.

  • how about password protected user accounts and having the option whether or not to share the media(music, video, saves, and so on) from one user account to another. (user accounts…. not to get confused with PSN accounts)

  • Ive Been Waiting For Such A Long Time For An Update That Will Let Me Play My Own Music While Playing Ps3 Games…

  • Nice Update. I have a lot of photos on my PS3 hard drive and media servers. For next updates, can you add some of the following features:
    1. Add text in the chat program under the Friends in the XMB.
    2. Make voice chat and text chat work in the background during a game. (Use the keyboard to respond to a text chat from friends in chat)
    3. Background Downloads: Set the priority of your downloads. (set 1st, 2nd priority, etc.)
    4. Easier Messageing: While you have recieved a message, make the message recieved notification stay up longer and create a feature that if you hold down the PS button while the notification is still displaying, your PS3 will automatically bring up a reply message back to that person.

Thanks, I hope that you consider these suggestions for future firmware updates. Are you also going to consider bringing the friends list to the PSP?

  • cuz_im_fly_homeboy

thats it?! SCREW PHOTOS ENHANCE YOUR MUSIC PLAYER!! its crap.

  • ok well its cool but, I would really like to see:

    1) Screen capture firmware side so you can do it in any game.

    2) Home game states, you click stats you can see what games I’ve played and how many time I’ve owned or been owned in killzone multi.(also hopefully view my screenshots)

    3) media codec download/installs on the ps store.

  • HEY GUYS, LETS ALL COMPLAIN TO SONY BECAUSE THEY GIVE US WHATEVER WE WANT LUL.
OH, AND LETS CALL THEM STUPID AND LETS TELL THEM THAT MICROSOFT IS BETTER.

Seriously, just shut the f*c* up.

  • Thanks for the update!

I always love to get updates! Keep up the excellent work Eric!!!

  • I for one am totally excited by this addition to the PS3 with regards to photos. I have long since run out of room on my macbook pro’s hard drive- and decided to move my photo album to my PS3 where I can now see everything on my big screen TV. To those who have yet to try this are really missing out. Even if you keep them on your hard drive on your computer- the PS3 is the perfect place to keep them as a back up. Keep up the good work guys! I always look forward to a (good) new update!

  • Sounds ok nothing crazy tho

  • “PS. I’m looking forward to In-DVD/Bru-Ray XMB. ;)”

Yes, this feature would be an excellent one to have on the PS3 :-D

  • Cool update. This is my first time commenting in the playstation blog.

  • mine is going pretty good….. i’ll post back what i think about it when its done….and give my review

  • Kool,But Can Yall Please PLease Fix The Freezing Thing Couse Im Always In Warhawk And I Will Get A Message So I Will Go To Read It And My Whole Playstation 3 Will Freeze And Its Not Just Mine, My Friends Does It To Please Fix It Couse I Have To Restart My Playstation 3 And I Cant Rank Up Couse It Freezes,HELP.

  • I’ve read a large sampling of the posts regarding the firmware upgrade. I’m primarily a PC gamer – COD4/COD WAW these days. My gang (15 of us) have a dedicated Teamspeak server that we use. The current PS3 chat thing that has everyone in a game speaking to each other is awkward. Private/invited group chat IS needed. That having been said, my wife and I got the PS3 as a multimedia hub for our home theatre, and it excels in that role. With a TVersity server on the PC it rocks. This upgrade is a nice incremental improvement. Yeah, the pics have to be on the PS3, but I suspect in future the PS3 will be able to read from a NAS unit. Kudos to Sony for giving back to the loyal user-base at no additional charge. I am a gamer, but the teen gamers on this list have to understand that the PS3 is much more than a gaming rig, and that these updates are appreciated. Having said that, I’m pushing my crew to move from the PC to the PS3. Once the chat issue has been addressed, this gang of 40 and overs will eventually move to this platform.

  • Wow, divx 3.11a. I honestly thought it would never happen. In fact, I thought sony said it would never happen because of copyright issues. Well now I can watch my ancient collection of pirated I mean legally backed up movies. There just might be hope for mkv after all.

Now give me internet radio and rss and my ps3 will be (almost) as complete as XBMC.

  • Hmmm, anyone ever thought how good it would be to have like a chat on this blog??? i dunno….just throwing it out there….*downloads photogallery*

  • I just downloaded it, checking it out and it looks great.

  • This update is simply ridiculous!!! Rather than adding new pointless features, why not FIX the issues that many have been asking for & that Sony stated would be fixed back in December of 2006!!!!!!!

    GIVE US OUR 1080i/1080p UPSCALING!

The 360 can do it, so why not the PS3? THis has plagued the PS3 since it’s release and STILL has yet to be remedied. Lame.

  • i have media-related sugestion..who should i mail it? thanks..

  • @saxplaya07

Same thing happens to me ..Id be playing a game then get a message and it would freeze so i would have to hard restart my ps3 from the back ….we need a fix on this plz

  • Well, I put the update on mine, and it CRASHED!!! Sony said they will have a tech call me in 24-48 hrs and sorry…she also told me that the 2.60 was delayed until tomorrow and wants the tech to determine what I did to get the update. Work longer on the update so it will not crash your PS3!! Also, Sony feels that a bigger hdd will cause the crash. So everyone out there with a 20gb hdd…sucks for you! Good luck guys and also when you install the photo app, the music is horrible!

  • Hi, I’m loving the new update. I showed my family the Photo Gallery, they were impressed.

*Is the PS3 ever going to come out with a (Music during Gameplay) feature?

  • Update is now available – I just finished updating.

  • the update is LIVE go download it

  • Photo Gallery looks awesome. You guys should do something similar with Music. “Music Library” keep the same concept, and use album covers instead of pictures. It’ll definitely be a GREAT add on to the PS3.

  • Granted, I’m sure whatever this update includes will be nice.. But I’ve been sitting here for about 45 minutes and my update is only at 18% – This is a bit pathetic. So much for being in the mood to play online tonight!

  • wow! so many comments.

  • I don’t understand why it is necessary to download and install the updates before playing a game. What if I don’t care about photo gallery or any of that other crap? I got a PS3 for the awesome games, not to look at pics or listen to music.

Can’t the update be downloaded and installed when the person who owns the system chooses? Most updates for other programs give you the choice to install now, or “remind me later.” Right now we are forced to do it when it becomes available.

Please consider making an option to install the updates at a later time.

  • great can’t wait.

  • very well done guys… thnx! but i would like to see sum cross game chating added in the next firmware guys ! PLZ? …keep up the hard work! XD

  • you need to make the ps3 backwards compatable..stop worrying about everything else..this is why your sales are poor..nobody wants a ps3 because we to junk all are old games….

  • HAS ANYONE ELSE’S CRASHED FROM THE UPDATE?

  • I just got this s=update and im loving the photo gallery its really great..but i would really like to see myself playing music while gameplay, im a big music guy so please add this feature, i hate to see 360 has it :(

  • 30 minutes so far and only 42% downloaded, with an excellent signal from the router and 10Mbps cable.

We need a delayed install option, or at least a background download.

  • Jeff, Why is it all the comments from you seem to only have to do with screen name migration? This is a Blog post about the FIRMWARE, please stay on topic. There are a dozen people here demanding things, some are fair and some are ridiculous. It would help is you told some of these people which are which so they’ll stop asking.

  • I’d much rather see PS2 (If only PS2 and not PS1) backwards compatibility in the next firmware release than more multimedia features. The multimedia features are nice but not #1 on my list. I bought my PS3 to play games on, not look at pictures. I can do that on my PC.

  • Sony does come up with cool updates!!

  • ok, so this is my review of the photogallery,

    the good-
it does its job well, makes enjoying the pictures on the ps3 a little more enjoyable……

    the bad-
after looking at my pictures about20 times its just boring and repetitive….not bashing just being honest, because it does what its intended to do, and nothing more

    the bottom line
    more to be desired…

  • I wonder if they can add ogg and mkv video support in the next update.

  • music while gameplay please im a big music guy i need this and other millions need this….please make it happen

  • The functionality with the photos is outstanding! This is the type of support that makes the PS3 such a complete package and demonstrates further how much more the PS3 IS than most people have any idea concept of.

Thank you for doing the job in a way that the rest of the industry cannot apparently even imagine!
