Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.
The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.
The 2.60 update also includes:
- Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
- DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.
Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.
As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.
Thanks guys! Keep’em coming!
But nice update, came up suddenly, didn’t expect it, but I’m glad we got it. =) The PS3 is a formidable experience
I`m downloading it right and it`s taking a long time
Sweet!!! eat!!!! =D lol
It would be nice if you updated the PC downloadable version too!
My PS3 is slower to download than the PC for some reason so I prefer to update via a flash drive.
Except you guys haven’t updated the download version from the PSN website yet!
On with the slow download then……
Thanks and great support Sony
Yay, pretty ways to access pretty pictures.
the update is still downloading i just cant wait to test it out
I want more avatars or able to make your own avatars. please
We need subtitles…….
We need subtitles…….
We need subtitles…….
Not everyone speaks English.
In games, in movies, in streams of video
It would be good if PS3 accept mkv files, but do not accept m2ts subtitle is unacceptable.
I never had to fully migrate because I never used PSBlog until just now.
First comment ever.
Playstation rocks.
Now, just make it where I can send and accept friend request by using my computer.
Then incorporate messaging from computer to ps3 and vice versa.
I can talk to my buddy Hank, while he is playing his Xbox, by using my mac.
I love the new features but it’s killing me with the DL time
Oh and you guys need to make these features more known to the public instead of putting out artistic commercials.
Or at least make an artistic AND direct informative commercial.
“Entertainment Unleashed” is getting closer but still not there yet.
Keep up the great work, just let people know about it publicly.
man if the comments keep flooding in like this sony has to say something LOL, i wonder how many posts will end up here? anyway ….i wonder is this is only part of the update as it said SNEAK PEEK. so maybe this is just some of it??? or maybe im being too optimistic, i wish someone from sony would say something so we’ll know what to expect(or not to expect)
Just as it was already pointed out in post number 31, when I merged my accounts, my PS.com Blog username is the one in display instead of my PSN ID.
Btw, I think you should have another way for us to submit feedback. Leaving feedback in the middle of a list of comments doesn’t assure anybody that the feedback will get to you guys.
Great update guys, keep it up!!! :D
Cool update! I see I am still using my Blog username. Doesn’t matter though ’cause it’s the same as my PSN ID but all lower case.
I’m pleasantly surprised at the new Photo Gallery, and raises an eyebrow at 3.11 support – did someone find a codec stacked away in a corner of the cleaning closet and dusted it off?
nice
but im wondering if there’s going to be n update where you can listen to music while playing
Yes I do agree with what several have said, that the update seems nice-like the ones before it-but we’d really like some updates concerning the PSN and gameplay while listening to music.
I would like to be able to type in Japanese on the PS3, and PSP without having to change the entire system language.
Why can’t there be an option to have two language options available at once, if possible. That way, people can choose what two languages they’d like to use without changing the entire system language.
Also, it would be great if the PS3, could create, edit, and view text files… It does everything else… One more icon on the XMB wont hurt, and maybe have something like MS paint or something.
I’d also like to see more than 3 visuals for the PS3’s music player.
I had something else I wanted to say.. But, I cant remember it right now..
The new photo gallery looks fantastic.
The interface look very intuitive and stemless.
Its always great to see new application come to the PLAYSTATION 3. The added divx support is also very welcome. Thanks for the heads up and video on the new firmware features.
PS: I have been following the PS Blog for some time and have never posted a comment (so hello from Australia), until you integrated the PSN Users. We need more integration like this with the PSN.
so i am happy to see that we are moving on up, but it still needs some work… I’m trying to download the update now, i have actually been trying to get it for about 2hrs, and still nothing, its just sits there on the same number, then kicks me off, which isnt anything new, which is why i always put it on my pin drive, but you havent even updated the web yet, so i’m screwed….another that bothers me is that when the update is out, i’m forced into doing it right then and there or i cant logg in online, which is whats going on right now, its just irritating!! like i said before glad we are moving up, but we still have ways to go!!
I’m not gonna lie, bit of a dissapointment…
although that gallery thing look real sexy
Its taking a long time. But i’m sure it’ll be worth it…
Update is now live
Nice unexpected update, its nice to get a surprise sometimes :)
Some features I’d like to see:
-Friends list sorting (Mush like how you can sort your contacts in groups on MSN messenger)
-Cross in-game invites would be nice
-In-game music would also be neat.
@1110
Most games have subtitles. Have you checked there options menu?
I love the updated DivX support, but when will the Playstation 3 get the DivX 7 support? I hear one of the most demanded features is mkv container support, and now that DivX is officially supporting the format, is it possible that we will see native support for the Playstation 3 sometime in the future?
Sony always seems to surprise me every update. Can’t wait till the next update comes out… I would like them to think bout letting ppsn id’s to be changed… something to think bout Sony
great update! will we see more slideshows outside of this app?
really excited for divx support, but one thing that is missing in the video front are subtitles. it seems small but i would definitely download more movies if they supported subtitles.
keep up the great work! as much as we complain, we really appreciate it!!!
Useless update?
Where’s our game cross over chat room? PSN Parties?
How about a more stable in-game XMB menu that doesn’t lag in many games like R2 making it not even worth using?
More space for profile information? A bigger comment bubble in our friends list? More avatars? Where the hell is the stuff we have been asking you guys about for months?
AND YET…
OH JOY!! You give us…a better photo experience? People are seriously using a PS3 for there photo’s over a PC? Sony, wtf are you thinking.
How about enhancing what GAMERS want…
well done guys. good update and the blog is really coming along nicely. keep up the good work.
Mandatory In-Game music, and it wouldn’t be so terrible to add that application to old games either. GTA IV anyone?
Thanks for the update, and its coming down pretty fast, thats a first for me.
We need more media extension support..
NICE jeff nocking microsoft a leg or two
i love updates, but i hate downloading them on the PS3 itself. I know I am not alone in this.
Come on SONY. Update your updates page. Let us download this on our computers, or fix your system update.
come on. keep your updates page updated.
well thats a bummer for us that dont really use the photo feature a whole lot! are u guys planning on putting more visualizers in I love planet earth but it would be nice to see something new like Deap Sea, Outer Space(other stars, galaxies, planets ect.) or even nature anything new would be nice.
(down a leg or 2)
Sorry, i forgot to say that other than that, great update!
Hey, what would divx be used for on the ps3? As well as, do you have any idea if there will be a new web browser updated soon? Because the current one is so slow, its not worth my time to get on the internet on my ps3. As well as flash? is there anyway to get this?
Nice. Photo Thing. If we could get some better organizing of music and videos.
Awesome, awesome, awesome!
Thank you for this update, it’s really nice.
Future updates I would like to see include cross-game voice chat. And how about official support for Hulu?
Cool I am installing photo gallery right now :)
As a relatively new owner of a PS3 (got mine just before the holidays, 360 went RROD, so with the PS3, I’m impartial and non-fanboyish to system. Yay open-mind!), I think that the DivX Support is huge for you guys at Sony, and should be proud of that addition alone. It’s definitely one of the must-haves in any lineup, and now only Wii remains for being a lackluster video-watching tool. Power to the True Next-gen.
so i can’t login to PSN to play games online (because it’s forcing me to upgrade), and the PSN website still has v2.53 listed as the current version.
so you’ve made the upgrade mandatory (which, by the way, makes it a fix, not an upgrade), but have very limited ways of installing it?
way to be ready, PSN…
Wow..either this is one big update or the download servers are overloading…it’s taking forever…. and I wanna play LBP. :\
Oh yeh, MKV support would be great, and as someone else said a few hundred comments ago, it would also be a kick in the bollocks to Microsoft, and that’s ALWAYS a good thing to do.
The photo thing looks great, but i really want in-game chat!
