Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.
The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.
The 2.60 update also includes:
- Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
- DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

ohh common for that i have a pc give something usefull like xbox live partys o give chat in game o more speed in see the trophies and the profile of my friend, or change the xmb in game its really slow the xmb in game, give me music in game just in a few games you can do that, give invites direct to the game, commonnnnnn i have waiting for too long i have the ps3 from 2 years and i didnt want to say but the software of the 360 is much better and I hope the software of the PS3 in the feature will be beat the software of the 360 i hope that beacause this machine is the most powerfull and the best machine in market so please please common sony in trust in you so dont dissapoint me i have waiting for too long so dont dissapoint me

Great, divx 3.11!! Do you guys have any plans to allow mp3s stored on the hard drive to be played instead of in game music?
Well I’m glad you guys are updating the PS3 regularly, however could you please update something that’s worth updating. I mean honestly I love my PS3 but I hate how I can’t listen to music while I’m playing a game. The Xbox360 allows this so I know it’s not impossible to do and this in my eyes would be the greatest update so far. Plus there are some games that allow you to use music but it has to be music on the PS3 hard drive it can’t be music that is on a media server. I know you could care less what I say and I doubt you even listen to half the people who request things, but I urge you to look into it because I know i’m not the only one who feels this way.
My update is downloading really slow, but getting there. Does anyone have a link to the USB-method download? I’m looking at the official PS download page and all they have is 2.53.

This all sounds great but when will you guys expand the ammount of types of video formats that the playstation 3 can play, at least .avi cause i’m having problems finding a program to convert the files i have so they could play.

Can’t wait for the new update, since I use my PS3 as a multimedia machine almost as much as I game.
Suggestions for future updates:
– Do something about the superimposing battery icon on the Time/Date on the XMB (lol)
– Whatever happened to that Blu-Ray video rip/encode feature?
– XMB accessible from all instances (PS2/PS1 game, DVD, Blu-Ray movie).
That last bullet might seem trivial, but I prefer navigating to “Turn Off System” or starting a game a la XMB rather than seeing the old black menu – it’s like a reminder of the past…the menu that nobody liked IMO

I think this is a really cool new feature, but one thing i would really like to be able to do with my ps3 is listen to my music in game. But the ps3 is definitely getting better and better and i love mine
You can go to turn off system all the way on the left of the PS3. It should be where the user names are at.

No, you don’t have in game chat or music… Get over it! If the game doesn’t support it it’s because they pay good money for those songs! Turn down the game music and listen to your mp3 player instead… Same thing…

It would be a great feature to be able to see friends status in games, ie. how much time is left in their current game.

It looks pretty cool if your really in to the photo capabilities of the PS3. I don’t know about you but i didn’t spend 400 dollars to watch my photos go by on a tv screen. so i ask, why is playstation wasting time with things like this. wheres the in-game music. wheres the voice recorded messenging and in-game chats. it seems like they could do a lot better with these firmware updates. So come on PSN LETS GET CREATIVE!

Why hasn’t there been an update yet so we can play music while playing a game?
Just downloaded it and gave it a quick run, pretty awesome. UI is a bit tricky but I guess that’s what help is for right?
I like how any slideshow is automatically converted to playlists although I’m not sure about vice versa. This definitely makes me feel like I need to buy a standalone camera and start snapping more photos. My phone camera doesn’t do justice on my screen but like I said with this new feature I could really see myself using the PS3 to organize my photos and show them off to family and friends.
Awesome feature, though I never use my PS3 for photos. However, this may be enough incentive to do so.
Thanks for the Playstation Network login for the blog, now it’s easier to comment from my Playstation3 (since I don’t a computer my Playstation3 is the only thing I use for internet). And also thanks for the new photo gallery

This may be stupid but after downloading this update my PS3’s wireless connection quit working yet everything else on my network still works perfectly. I already lost my blu-ray software after an earlier version update. I hope I’m wrong on this…
I would Love 2 say that the Ps3 system is the Best on the Market sorry X-Box……………New features I would like 2 see is listen 2 music while playing games please work on it…….and last work on adding your own picture the box where your friend list is instead of the cartoons images………..Thanks Best System Ever PS3.

what if you did a picture in picture sort of thing so you can watch videos or look at pictures or do any other thing on the ps3 while playing a game or surfing the web, and make it size and position adjustable, that’d be sweet if i was playing on my psp while my bro was playing cod4, oh what if you could watch what’s happening on the ps3 thru the remote play or go into remote play while someone else is on the ps3 and play with them or go on the web with a connected controller or special psp controls and PLEASE make it so you can join people not just get invited and make it so it prompts you if someone wants to join and that cross game chat could work with the picture in picture thing and some more things added to the remote play would be very welcomed

C’mon SOny, this looks cool and all, but why cant you input IN GAME VOICE CHAT AND VOICE MESSEGING? we honestly dont care about this as much. You should really include what is prioritized as first by your consumers. Anyway, i still like this photogallery idea, but i know it wont live long, because who here still remembers that thing called “life with playstation?”

As usual…the PS3 never ceases to amaze me. I look forward to each new FW update. I have alot of pictures, hopefully this application will allow me ease of use. As a future FW update, I also have alot of my own music on my PS3…how about a Music Gallery which would allow downloadable MP3 tags, Album covers, lyrics…etc., I think you get the picture. If this is not something within your powers, I will understand. But as of right now, alot of my music I have to search for the right album covers, artist information, etc. When I rip some CD’s they don’t always have the CD text information attached to it, so it makes quite a chore to gather up the information I want. Keep up the good work!!!
