Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

1,717 0

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.

As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.

  • its a nice feature to have.

I would have thought 2.6 would have much more since its a new number after the dot

  • Like Xbox 360, will the PlayStation Team have an update where there will be music playback during the course of live video gaming?

  • O and number 1000 its my lucky day !!!

  • Sweet I love updates

  • and does this new photo update work with photos thats on my PC? I don’t keep my photo’s stored on ps3

  • How come only DivX 3.11 support, why doen’t support the latest DivX codecs? What is it now DivX 7?
I can go out and buy the cheapest, no name, crap quality dvd player with he latest DivX support. Yet the PS3 only supports DivX 3.11. Unless I’m wrong and the PS3 will play DivX files created in the latest codecs.

  • @NathanJ:
I want that feature too and so do a lot of others. So if he wants a feature that is on another console, he must be a fanboy, right? Wrong.
    Calm down bro.

Anyway, for this update, meh but it isn’t affecting me because I see some of you like it so it’s fine.

I just hope you guys are focusing on the bigger stuff PSN needs (in game private chat, cross game invites, voice messages, party system, and other things).

  • Please add an update allowing the option of having a security/password at boot up. I have it enabled on my desktop computer and notebook and it would be nice to also have it availble on my ps3 in the event it was ever stolen

  • I wish they would add an update where I can have the option to install these games or not.

  • Good job on the adding the ability to browse the Playstation store without needing to sign up for PSN.

Why was this feature removed from the PC Store? Not only do you have to sign up for PSN but you have to download and install software to even view the store now.

Please fix that ridiculous mistake on your part.

  • This new photo organizer for the PS3 is just what I was looking for. I have over 1000 pictures that needed to be organized and having this new application available on the PS3, will make doing so a breeze.

I might also use it to showcase photos at work and leave it on all day to display some of the work I do inside the photo studio. We previously used a computer to do so, and it took a lot of work to render the photos to video then run the photo slide show. The Use of the PS3 to run the Slide show will not only help us cut the rendering time, but it will use less desk space than our current computer. I’m very happy to see this great new feature on the PS3. Great Job you guys!

  • When is it coming out!

  • I like the upgrade to media. I hope the next firmware upgrade addresses multiple accounts logging on at the same time for local multiplayer. I want to earn trophies with my friends.

  • Good to see the photo gallery options.
Now I can gloat over my Burnout mugshots more systematically :)

  • I like how you sign-in with your PSN now. Its working great to. Wish I could do something cool like that on my PS3 blog lol.
Cool update to btw. DLing on my PS3 now.

  • I’m looking forward to an update that I can use. Waiting for the day or year for in-game chat. Then I can dump my 360 and buy another PS3. Oh well one can dream.

  • If anyone is wondering about my comment above, I was j/king. Still waiting for it.

  • nice update, keep it up!

  • The upate is now online in europe

  • What is the point in this?? This is a Game system in which you should focus on making the gaming the best it can be before worrying about photos which not nearly as many people use. WHO CARES?? another fancy wastefull thing like life with playstation.

    I want a ps3 update with this:

    1) In game chat
    2) updated web browser
    3) new avatars
    4) Ability to “Follow” Friends from xmb into game
    5) Better Stability online
    6) Voice messages
    7) Ability to appear invisible

  • Srsly….MKV suppor tplz, it can’t be that hard can it?

  • its a multimedia machine

  • Oh but other than that awesome update, thanks! On a sidenote I’d like to say that I was fortunate enough to make my PSN and PSBlog IDs the same so I didn’t even notice the problem others were having…so the process went swimmingly on my lunch break

  • OMG over 1000 comments

  • you guys are awesome thanks for the update. keep the ps3 fresh.

  • who cares about that photo stuff? does anybody really use it? do something more practical like finding out how to do more voice chat stuff like on the 360

  • The fact the PS3 browser doesn’t work properly on SONY’S own Playstation/PS3 websites is appalling. How impressed will prospective PS3 buyers be when they first use to browser to visit the Playstation “family” of websites, only to be confronted with errer messages and options that don’t work?

The browser is a huge asset…a portal to the internet that SONY totally neglect. Javascript errors and freezes art TOO common.

  • How about movies for the UK?

  • Wow this new photo app looks really awsome!

  • THE PATCH IS ONLINE !!!

  • Not only does Sony purposely make their own system hard to develop, we also get useless updates that mean absolutely nothing.

  • on average, how big is a firmware? it always seem to take forever to DL

  • cool as
nice work guys. good to see more codec support. much more is needed and i’m sure you are working on it. eg. full avi & mkv support.

nice to see we can now use just 1 login id. very good move guys.

  • @1021

You know I’m sure these features are in the works, the problem with development is that some times certain issues are harder to figure out or find a nice seamless user approach to. I’m sure they have a multitude of people working on many things and even if they wanted to they can’t focus all the work on those items you listed as you can’t (well shouldn’t really) have two people editing the same piece of code, it just gets problematic.

I only ask that Sony compile a list of ‘user requested’ features here on the blog. I often hear phrases like ‘thats a highly requested feature’ but for one where the heck are they getting this info from and for two why not share it with us so we have some idea if sony is even listening and perhaps a glimpse as to whats coming down the pipeline.

  • Jeff Rubenstein keep up the good work
    Greetz Form Holland

  • The new firmware(v2.60) is now live.

  • I know everybody said it already 500 times at least, but please.. for the love of god! We want MKV. That’s it. Nothing more.

    I hate converting to VOB.

  • @1033

anyone feel free to convince me if I’m wrong but I believe when you get a firmware update it includes everything past and present. IE whether you’re updating from the last frequent FW or you bought a launch box and are just now connecting to the internet…you download the same thing.

On one hand I can’t see how hard it would be to program something to read a users current firmware and then simply fill the void.

On the other hand I could see how having to maintain a database of every single freakin’ firmware update could get old fast at the pace sony puts out these FW updates.

  • that is how you say

    BEASTLY

  • Great new application! I will be sure to check it out. Keep them coming!

  • good update

  • I am down loading th new software it looks sweet this system is way better then the xbox 360 keep up the good work playstation you are the best system and and everything eles

  • I love the updates, Sony has always had the best customer relations, my entire editing suite is all Sony, I now have 3 Sony XD cams 2 decks 3 blue ray burners not to mention my toys.. PS units DVcams home theater Projector even my cell is a Sony
I own well over 1 mill in Sony stuff and I’m glad I do. it all boils down to the quality of product I get from Sony and wicked service I get from SECA and Sony Pro, these updates and the fact we have the ability to talk direct with people like Jeff Rubenstein and his team shows me Sony cares for people who care for Sony.
I hope everyone here takes note on how rare this kind of relationship is in todays buisness world.
    I love it. Thanks!!

  • can’t wait till it comes out man i will use it to the max YEAHHHH

  • 1. PSN migration was super-smooth. Just as the Forum account was.

    2. I’m so pumped! Stuff like this really, really makes me want to work on the firmware team.

Nice. I’d still love more support for sub-directories on external hard drives in addition to playlist support on external drives.

I’m with brentos on this! Give us Sub-Folder/Directory support on ext. HDD!

  • KillZone 2 cannot come soon enough!

My brother has taken my PS3 to his new flat

    “The SYSTEM is MINE!”

  • Update now up, downloading it now. That was fast.

  • Hey, here is a novel idea. How about an EQUALIZER???? I mean really now… If you really want somethign that is Value Added, give us an equalizer, so we can make the music sound GOOD, if not GREAT, as opposed to the default, less than stellar sound it has now. Everything that plats MP3’s and WMA’s has one, EXCEPT the PS3.
