Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

1,717 0

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.

As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.

  • @884

Going simply by your username I’d expect your comprehension to be low.

So mindless that you need to try and ‘call out’ anyone that says anything against the all honorable Sony.

And seriously, a tampax joke? Are you 14, or over 50? Because only one or the other would think that was clever.

  • bring the real thingto the ps3 plz. lister to the fan.

  • This is really cool!

i hope we get some new features in ingame xmb soon.

like ingame chat, enchance the look of the xmb etc. CHECK the PS3 update board plzz.

    BTW NEW AVATARS!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hi, i was wondering if you could fix a bug (i think/hope its a bug)

When loading messages on my PS3, it loads the avatar of the sender, however it does not let you do anything else until it has loaded the avater.

This slows down browsing through messages and can also lock-up the system for 20-30 secs if not signed in and have slow connection, as i cannot do anything else but while it is searching for the avatar of the sender.

Would be great if you could fix this in the firmware.

  • Hi
Any chance to have skype in a future firmware update, to be able to talk with psp users and also use the PS3 as a phone, like I do with my psp??

    Thank you
    Raoni

  • This looks great and I am thankful. I just wish Lempel will finish added the features we really need and then these will be just additional updates. We really need cross-game invites and chats. The clock should be moved because it is annoying having to wait to check my battery.

  • First comment thanks to PSN login!

I am sure this has been asked before but I dont want to read 800 comments…

Will this new photo application also work with photos stored on a media server? I dont want to move all my pictures to the ps3…

  • Nice update! Can’t wait to get both for the PS3 and PSP.

  • Looks pretty sweet!

  • PS3 users want other things.
    Please listen to us.
    We want
    1. Be able to send voice messges.
-Come on Sony we are in 2009….Send text is so old and irritating.
    2. Be able to have in Game Private and Party Chats.
-Kind of annoying when we get an invite to a chat and have to quit the game…
    3. Be able to join in someones game from XMB.
-If my friend is playing Call of Duty WaW..let me join his online party!!!
    4. Finally, we want to see what the person is doing in the game…

Copy paste this if u want it

  • Also Jeff, the head banner is no longer selectable to take you back to the main page of the blog.

  • @94 – Seems the banner is linkable at the bottom portion of it due to the PSN ID also being in the header.

  • – in-game chat.

    – cross game invites

    – voice messaging

    – better online friends list

    – ability to view your friends buddy list.

  • KILLZONE 2!!!!!!!!!

HOW BOUT U RUSH THE RELEASE DAT ON THAT!

  • UPDATE THE BROWSER. UPDATE THE BROWSER. UPDATE THE BROWSER!!!

I can’t even link my PSN account to THIS website without freezes, turning off java and getting “browser not compatible messages.

Come on SONY…this is pathetic. UPDATE JAVA!!

    2.61…the browser update…pleeaase?

Before I go crazy with frustration.

  • While the new additions are nice I feel that the core use of the Playstation 3 is being neglected. It would be nice to see some additional features geared towards gamers.

A few that stand out to me would be the ability to go straight to a message or a friends profile when the popup saying a message has been received or a friend is now online. Also perhaps some improvements to the loading time of the XMB while playing a game.

Thanks for the firmware updates so far. :-D

  • @735 EXACTLY……i swear man i’ll die without thorough in game custom music…

  • Hi guys! I have a question here.

I’m just thinking if the penultimate firmware update changed something else on my PS3. Since that the coolers are working at maximum speed without any reason. After that the console flashes the red light and asks me to turn it off. I can even put my hand at the back of the console and it’s not hot.

An update can change something on PS3, related to hardware?

  • why is sony spending time and money on features nobody (or at least an extremely small amount of people) wants?

  • Does this include the PSN password trophy glitch? You know, when if you change your password you can no longer get trophies?

  • ahh man it says ‘ryuk’ its supposed to be ‘ryuuk’ did i mess up?

  • First off, @50 NathanJ shut the hell up! What kind of ignorant moron are you? just because you have no one to talk to doesn’t mean that cross-game chat wouldn’t be a valuable feature to many people. I know I would have loved to chat with a buddy of mine while we were playing Fallout 3. It would also be great for games with crappy voice chat like half the ones I’ve played online. Being able to use an XMB based one over a crappy in-game one would have been a godsend!

Second, we need better avatars! Most of the ones available suck and make little to no sense. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for a few more game related ones. Maybe some Metal Gear ones or some Resistance 2 ones. Hell, I would love to see some LittleBigPlanet ones. I don’t understand what the thought process was when someone thought it was a good idea to make sailboats and power sockets(?) some of our very few options. This isn’t a huge deal I just thought it would be nice to have a little more variety in that department.

  • Why are features like:
    This new gallery
    Home
    Folding@Home / Life

not features/applications that one can download from the PSN shop. Why are you cluttering my beautifull XMB with all kinds of stuff i don’t want? I can’t remove them – there is always an icon for them!

Its stupid if you ask me.

  • Cool video. I don’t use the picture selection much, but I will now.

  • That photo gallery deal is AWESOME!

  • XxBigP123xX – I understand that you want new features, but guest access to the PSN Store is a pretty big deal, as it will help generate interest and revenue for Sony, which in turn will help them financially, which can have a direct impact on the quality / quantity of features we see added to the Playstation Network.

You are often short sighted and demanding here, you should take a few more moments to think about the big picture before you post and complain :)

  • I actually love the photo features on my PS3, can’t wait to try this out!!

  • People are screaming out for voice messaging, a decent browser, improved video codec support etc. Is anyone listening??

So what do we get? Another way to sort pictures, big bloody deal!

It might help SONY sell more PS3s if they made it into the “Multi Media Hub” WE want and not the gimicky toy SONY wants to impose on us.

I really think that SONY just don’t get it…at all.

  • Thank you for the update. It is not something that I think I will use much, but just the fact that you guys are giving us things that we do not have to pay for it great. I think it would be nice to have a music store. Sony would be perfect for that since you have such a great music business. I would also like to have Netflix or Blockbuster support added.

  • hay man this is a nice looking update, is there any chance in the near future of in-game voice chat? its a nice feature thats on xbox which i also have and would like to have it on ps3 aswell.
anyway great job, love the ingame xmb, home, the store its all good but ingame voice chat would be great!

  • Can you play your own music (may be useful for those in bands to show off pictures with their music).

  • Well, there is more to implementing features than software engineering. There are patents to get around, legal issues, and more importantly, compatibility issues.

If Sony adds these features, there may be issues with some games and compatibility, which would certainly create problems gamers in general if they boot up a game and it no longer functions the way it should.

Honestly, the only way we’ll see some of the said features that a lot of you want will be in a game by game basis, as it would have to be implemented into the SDK for developers to use and allow access for.

I know it might not be the answer you want to hear, but that’s the short and sweet of it.

I’m pretty sure Sony “gets it” I just think there are other things in place that make it harder for them to get there than you all think.

  • First of all, over 900 comments is insane. I feel sorry for whoever has to read them all.

    Second,

“The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities.”

OK, so is it just the photo gallery, the guest PS store access, and the Divx stuff? Or is there more? Cause I’d love to see some more PSP/PS3 functionality, if the 5.03 update is indicative of anything.

And third, the PSN synching with the blog went real smooth for me. Good job!

  • Cool update

Are we getting more visuals on the musicplayer??

  • Nice feature!

  • ..ANYTHING FOR GAMERS HERE.. it seems you’re joking with us seriously.. AT LEAST Private in-game chat.. ..HOW CAN YOU IGNORE THESE VOICES? HOW..??

  • Nice update!

And i really like that i can now log in with my PSN.. great work!

The things i would like to see in a future update:

    * New avatars
    * Universal join/invite system
    * Cross-game chat

  • I really don’t like the galleries interface. Sorry it looks out of place and well rubbish when compared with the rest of the ps3’s overall design. A real step backwards in my view.

Also whats with coloured icons? Why not keep in theme with the rest of the XMB design (I’ll let the PSN logo slide as your trying to brand it)?

I really would rather see Sony make the game cards and trophy comparisons load faster (much faster, do they even get cached?) before providing stuff like a photo gallery. It is a gaming system after all, every thing else is second in my mind.

  • Photo Gallery is really nice. Now we need a “Video Gallery!!!”
I have a lot of movies and videos on my PS3 and I would love to browse all my movies this way viewing the dvd cover art. And being able to launch my movie right from there.

  • wow!!! suriously… there are more important issues that need to be solved before you guys just waste your time on this! Sony all we want to be able to do is to be able to communicate with eachother while GAMING! i mean come on THIS IS A GAMING CONSOLE!!!!

  • “People are screaming out for voice messaging, a decent browser, improved video codec support etc. Is anyone listening??”

You do realize that they just updated the browser and are adding new codec support WITH THIS UPDATE?

  • About the end of a video, I swear the little asian girl’s photo with the sad piano and the zooming in made it look like she died recently.

  • @ 938 – I’m sure they aren’t ignoring any of the requests, that’s literally an impossibility. However, as I stated earlier, there are some things that simply cannot be done legally, or realistically.

Adding cross-game private chat may create a host of compatibility issues as it was not built into the firmware from the start. If it’s going to gain any support, it’s more likely that it will be on a ‘game by game’ basis, rather than a universal update.

Remember, there’s more to this than just hitting the go button, it’s a pretty involved process, especially this late in the consoles life cycle.

  • Just hope it doesn’t brick my console –__–

  • Wow! Nice Update Sony! Thx and keep up the good work!

  • @ 942

Its a multimedia console in my opinion.

  • speaking of said update, when will it be availible to us anyway???

  • Today for europe
