Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.
The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.
The 2.60 update also includes:
- Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
- DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.
Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.
As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.
Also, as a previous commenter said:
“The migration hasn’t gone perfectly unless I’m mistaken.
I logged in fine and merged my accounts but I was under the impression that PSBlog would from now on be using my PSN name when instead it still uses my PSBlog name.
Is this correct or is it going to change to my PSN name later on?”
I’m in the same boat; I linked them fine, but it’s still using my old commenter username as the name. The pic, however, is my PSN pic.
Hey jeff, whats up, i never really left comments before because it was a hastle for me to log in, but i was excited when i heard about PSN log in, anyway jeff i thought of a great firmware update, and i thought i would say it here, okay, a system wide clan system, so you and your clan dont have to keep making clans and losing touch and stuff, heres some details, you have a list, and it acts like a second friends list, but only hold like 20 people, and some form of trophies for entire clans for achieving stuff, so PLEASE REPLY blogers and tell me if you like it,
PSN has been playing catch up with that other online service and i believe that this new firm ware i thought of will boost PSN a head (if it isnt already)
Sweet work guys :D
But gawd dammnit, i want in-game screenshot features :D
Ohh almost forgot.
Just a request. Would it be possible to have the audio output through stereo bluetooth headsets?? It would be a great feature and encurage more people to use headsets.
And we need new Avatars added every two weeks or so, You could even have some Rare premium avatars available for people to buy on the PS store.
“implementing cross-game chat ”

Just testing the comment area out, I will say that this is a lot easier to memorize than the old way of doing things.
I was hoping for a feature that improved the trophy system layout. :(
This is REALLY cool! I love how you guys at Sony keep giving us all of these cool features! Honestly! It seems every month there’s something new to be excited about! I can only imagine how versatile everyones PS3 will be in the next few years… heck, I can’t even imagine what the rest of ’09 will be like!!!! :)
add patches to ps2 and ps1 games, not all of them are working unfortunately. also i’m usually getting a problem when i try to send a message and the ps3 doesn’t quite freeze, it just won’t let me do anything. i tried turning off the controller and turning it back on but the only solution is to turn off the ps3. fix that problem.
Soon PS3 is going to kill the xbox 360!!!
Sweet! But in the future will there be a way you can download videos off of youtube?
btw to be honest, the patch isn’t that good. can u guys put more work into ingame music, and crossgame chat.
As nice as the photo gallery is I would really like to see some Ipod support. SOOO many people have ipods it only makes sense to have some kind connection.
This is looking really great. Can’t wait.

Very nice feature, i will play it around for sure! And please implement game invites, private voice chats and a party system like the Xbox 360! It would really be awesome if the PS3 can do that =)
Nice feature!! looks sexy, still would like a private chat feature at some point tho via XMB.
please make this for my mac!
Yea the sooner the better In-Game Chat and Cross-Game invites come out the better and more games (new realeses) will support it.
Oh yes I’d love to store my photos on a PS3 so that if it ever breakes again (as it did last night) I wont be able to restore them from the HDD.
Sony, fix and improve what matters. Do not spend time and money on stuff we don’t really care about.
Jeff, as others have reported, my ID here is not the PSN ID it was supposed to be after the merge. I still show up with the old nick.
Photo Gallery is a great new feature. Im guessing there going to make a Video and Music Gallery kinda thing also. I actually had a dream that this sort of feature would be on the PS4.
Just keep it coming guys and thnx for the update.
Keep on bring more features to the PS3 and I cant wait for whats coming next.
you guys should realy release a firmwire update for all the trophy problems, just like the one that wont let you play dead space or burnout paradise, and the one were warhawk trophies dont work.
I don’t have any personal photos on my PS3, but if i did this looks like it’d be a pretty cool application to use.
man..ps3 is gettin sweet..i need to get one..lol come on tax check
Add the latest version of Flash please…
Cool!
Nice one, are Photo-playlist included or am I becoming blind?
hey guys quick question whats the overall purpose for the ps store guest feature? i don’t understand it. thanks for the info guys!!! keep up the great work!!!
I’m disappointed that so many are content to accept anything from Sony and praise them for it.
A photo utility was a waste of man-power, time, and money. And it will not sell more PS3 units. So we are ALL losing this battle.
Sony’s blatant disregard to acknowledge what it’s core users ask for is frustrating to say the least. Home, Life with Playstation, and now this Photo Gallery Application… You’re just coming off arrogant at this point, Sony.
This is such a waste of time, such a shame.
And for you that seem so thankful and eager to salivate for any useless free handouts you can get, I’ll be giving out birdseed all evening in the park.
one more question are there any plans in the future for in game private chat and cross game invites?
thank you =D
that okay when are u gone bring the top feat to the ps3
.youtube icon
.bet browser
.bet frends list
.bet jave playa
.shock wave playa
Hey im having some trouble login in for some reason trough the ps3 or is it just not possible.?
@TXNY
go change your tampax and be patient
Logged in as DG?
Should be DonnyG. Well at least my avatar is correct.
also i dont think that cross-game chat would not be any good for Socom because people would be cheating if they were in the same room against u or if they have a friend in the opposite team telling them where u r that would suck. but for playin different games probably like a phone call now that would be kind of cool.
Hey Jeff, could you pass the word onto the PSN team to try and get support for .MKV playback please?
~ Thanks!! =D
nice to see more updates. Only suggestions i have is:
1.more avatars
1b.custom avatars that are monitored (if it is something stupid/offensive ban the MAIN account or stick them with a standard avatar for a year)
2.For all those with BC list the games we play under our names compared to making us log off
2b.For those watching blu-rays show which ones they are watching but disable alerts from popping up during movie time and show them online
2c. Would not mind an online list of all blu-rays being watched on ps3 which should not be hard to gather
3. Fix the clock and battery issue having this reach near a year in terms of not being fixed is horrible
4. Grouping Friends
..anything for gamers here….. cross-game chat please.. at least private in-game chat.. really.. it seems you’re joking with us seriously.. ..how can you ignore these voices? HOW..??
Nice feature update. Having the ability to have the PS3 rotate wallpapers in a Playlist or in an Album would be wonderful for 2.70 or 2.80, hint hint.
It would be amazing to see MKV included when DivX 7 rolls around eventually as well. It is part of the DivX 7 standard as advertised, so I would hope the PS3 is updated to support this.
Yet another useless update which has nothing at all to do with gaming. How about you actually fix 80 GB Yakuza’s backwards compatibility? It says all the problems are fixed but if you actually play it (or even look at any forums) then you would know that it isn’t fixed.
Now I gotta waste time downloading this pointless [DELETED]. Firmware updates like this need to be optional.
