Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

1,717 0

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.

As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.

  • Thatsz H0T!

  • “implementing cross-game chat ”
    **Oh shut up.
No one gives a damn about that stupid feature idiot. Go play with your RRoD box if that is so F-ing important to you.**

Actually, it’s a really cool feature and a lot of people want it. Retards like you need to shut up.

And I was hoping for a lot more in the next update, like faster in-game XMB(loading the icons),Comparing Trophies, loading Profile Cards, ect.

  • when does it come out

  • can guests buy items in the store or just browse?

  • Pretty cool but kinda need to agree with Sekoku…sorry…;)

I like the psn update too, expect now people everywhere will know that I spelled my psn name wrong. (though the whole thing wouldn’t fit…)

Nevertheless everything is cool, but currently my account says my blog name. :p

  • Nice update, and love the PSNID login.
    Thank you!

  • I’m sure there are lots of people who will love this update. It will even encourage me to add photos to my PS3 now. Thanks. But I think you will please the majority of the PSN Community with Private/Cross In-game Chat.

  • wow , i like it , very nice .

  • Not too excited for the firmware…but the PSN ID integration is sweet.

  • This looks great, but I would really love to see NTFS support.

  • the DivX update is the only thing useful. now for future updates:
    1)MKV support!(Please)
    2)SRT subtitles
3)MOAR Codecs (Real codecs, and H264)

  • I give a damn about it too. PlayStation is a video game console.I have a PlayStation to play games. It is so far behind Xbox when it comes to online capabilities. I’ve been a PlayStation fan my whole life but enough is enough. If it wants to compete with Xbox it needs to be equivalent to it.

  • Sounds great! Looking forward to the update.

  • to all you people asking for backwards compatibility in a future firmware: this feature does not come in a firmware update but in the ps3’s hardware itself. they cannot add this feature to your existing ps3

people asking for trophies: trophies are in game updates not a firmware updates

  • This update BETTER address the 80022d11 trophy/saved game error or I’m going to throw a fit.

  • Please fix error 80022D11!!!

  • sweet…looks very nice!!! =)

  • I have to agree with more than half the comments here. this is truly a waste of development time for about 60-70 percent of gamers. not that there isn’t about 100 ways to view pictures with music and colorful backgrounds on a tv already. yet, we still can’t listen to the music on the hdd in games, voice chat is typically horrible. the message system is a joke and home… well let’s not go down that road again. i’m not sure why the development team still seems so oblivious to the basic list of features you can actually use on the other platforms adn use them pretty damn well.

  • This feature’s a good addition but please PSN let us listen to our music while playing games. More people would put music onto their PS3s and the new download service coming out this year from SCEE would be even better. Also can you make it so that friends can talk to each other while in other games or be able to join parties more easily.

  • I really appreciate what you guys do with the updates. I know alot of people don’t, but don’t listen to them, there just a bunch of babies. I would really like to see you guys fix up the backwards compatibility on the 80GB (original) model though. I bought my PS3 knowing that I would be able to play all of my PS2 games on it but thats not so, I recently bough Hitman: Contracts for the PS2 and it lags very badly on my 80GB PS3 and so does Hitman 2: Silent Assassin. I hope you guys can fix this.

  • Great job, but please make the subtitles playable. That is one of the most missed option belongs to the video playing. Don’t need to support any kind of subtitles, .sub or .srt would be acceptable at the begining.

    thanks for your work!

  • wow what an update! 2.60 huh? mind as well be 2.54 the update has nothing that we really need,I guess its an update lol!

  • Lookin’ good… I never use my PS3 for photos but I might pop some on there now ;)

  • this looks good, but I’d also like to see:

    MKV support
more options to organize music & videos

  • Cool. Keep up the good job bringing us great features.

  • …oh and subtitle support for divx files too!

  • Awesome, i’ll have to migrate almost all of my pictures. also why am i still under my blog name and not my ID?

  • @809

For all the people who wan’t backwards compatibility. You should have bought a 60 GB like me on and not have been so cheap.

I only realy use features like photo thing once. The infomation board thing was useless and its been a long time waiting for real Divx support.

Still waiting for In-Game chat that dosn’t have to be supperted by the game, like in-game music. I know in-game chat was meant to be there because there is a shortcut menu when you press triangle in the chat room on xmb.

  • Looks good!

  • …wow!

Just in time for my house party!!!

    YAYS!!!

  • Is this going to fix the broken music streaming?

  • This is actually a cool feature…
I don’t take many photos though, but I’ll use it for the ones I have!

Jeff: Oh, and the merge was smooth like something that is realy smooth… except on the PS3 it gave me a weird error that would reload a page constantly causing the browser to fail and I had to turn off the PS3 and restat it… but then it worked fine…

  • Great…That sounds like a cool feature. But it still does’nt touch on the updates that are most requested.

    – in game music playback
    – home character on the xmb background
    – better organization of the friends list
    – able to multi task using the xmb interface..(why do we have to close out the music just to look at my setting tab)

and much more. these are simple updates that will really make us happy :d

  • Looks like an interesting update!

  • Cool, but do you really think a photo gallery application is what people have been looking forward to?

  • Jeff: Speaking of the PS Blog on the PS3, every time I post a coment (as in when I hit submit in a few seconds) it takes me to an error page!

The comment posts fine, however, it shouldn’t give me that error page… Something you might wan’t to fix…

    Bye gravatars!

  • Tech support said the 80022D11 – trophy/saved game error will be fixed with this patch. Why was it not mentioned above? This needs to be fixed. Many of us have been patiently awaiting for months for this fix while many of our games have been collecting dust. See below link for confirmation it would be included on the upcoming patch and clarify whether it will be included (it better be).

  • Add friend request from bottom to top SO WE CAN KNOW IF WE GOT A FRIEND REQUEST. AS SOON AS WE GO ON. We don’t want to scroll down just to see if we got friend request we want to know right away because nobody scrolls down to their offline friends because you can’t do anything with them. Also there should be a symbol that tells you how many messages and friends you have somewhere on the XMB so you know because it’s hard to tell sometimes. Especially messages. They even said in one of IGN podcast they found it a problem if you get a message when you are away or if you are offline you don’t know that you got a new one if that person went offline.

  • @828

In game music is allready out just most games dont support it. Motorstorm 2 dose YEY!!

  • Are there plans to allow the PS3 to bitstream DTS HD-MA and Dolby TrueHD with the full data (both core and extension files) so my receiver can decode the information? It’s nice that the PS3 can decode the information but I would prefer my high end receiver perform that function and then I can also finally get the satisfaction of seeing those logos light up on the receiver.

  • First comment ever on PS Blog. Just wanted to thank you guys for the great job you’ve been doing around here.

  • yet again…another use less update from sony

they say they listen to there fans, and they do just that… they just listen

  • wow :O im like really impressed with that photo gallery .. hmm .. if only i had the idea first!! i would have made millions !! so unfair.. awesome companies always get the more awesome ideas first :(

  • Cool firmware update. Any news when it might be out.

  • Interesting. Not necessarily my cup of tea, but it’s something that obvious work has been put in to, so I can’t complain.

  • Sony, I appreciate you trying to add new features to the ps3, but I can’t see a whole lot of people using this, more than once or twice.

We REALLY need new PSN features, Cross-game chat/Invites, A way to group your PSN friends
    CLAN,FRIENDS, You get the Idea.

  • Thanks sony…the linking worked and I look forward to this awesome system update.

  • The photo app is welcomed with open arms.

  • Not much of a photo guy, but cool for those who are.
