Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

1,717 0

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.

As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.

  • Ok cool!!!

  • everyone wants voice support in game. the best way to do that is by adding skype. let us recieve calls in game. that way we can talk to other people on our friends list as well as talking to people on there pc, voip enabled phone, mobile, pda etc.
you could even get skype to sell minutes in the ps store and then the ps3 would be the telephone of the future. video calls, voice calls, all from the living room.
its not hard.. the program is already there, and you already partnered with them with psp.

psp is great but you don’t always have internet to call people or recieve calls, the ps3 does.

please add this. …come on i followed you on twiiter… i’ll be your best friend, i’ll buy a ps4 and psp2.

  • Moving the battery indicator so that it wouldn’t block the time/date would be a welcome little addition in the upcoming firmware updates.

Also, can’t wait to try out the new photo gallery. Thanks!

  • Holy crap, that is a lot of comments, never knew a photo gallery feature would be so popular.

Oh, nevermind, it just a bunch of people whining and pointing at shortcomings, as usual :)

  • what???what is this wheres ingame chatting this is what weve ben begging for and u give us useless image garbage i mean dont get me wrong it looks cool but its kinda useless inhance the psn and stop wasting your time with uselessn updates

  • Dawww what about In-Game Private Chat, like where you can have a chat party that you can speak to while you play games, even if you’re all playing different games! Similar to Xbox LIVE I suppose…

Thanks for the media updates, btw. That’s really important to me.

  • woo my first comment ever!!! but im very excited about this. great addition

  • Linking process was EEEEEEASY… the whole of SCE should learn from this and try to make the whole PlayStation Experience just as smooth.

Nice features there, not so crazy about Photos or nothing, but it’s nice to know it’s there!

  • The sad part: SONY will read through this 15-page blog and somehow come to the conclusion that what we REALLY want next is to be able to change the planet in “Life with Playstation” (remember that application?) to Mars, or Venus, or Pluto.

“Yup, that’s what our customers want the most. Let’s spend 6 months making it happen!!”

  • This is useless to me… Damnit. Anything other than picture would have been useful…

  • The photo menu looks great next you guys need to get a music store going and a similar setup for music in the xmb

  • Nice, feature update.
    @50
I don’t care for cross game chat either.
If your in a game talk/chat with the ppl you are playing with.
Thats how the game was made to be played. All cross chat will do is isolate players and allow cheating.

  • Me likes

  • Great update guys. Can’t wait to download the firmware when it’s up and ready. Do you guys also get requests from fans to put new features in the PS3, if so, I have a lot of ideas to make the PS3 better.

  • @252 i know exactly what you mean.

  • @Eric,
Now that the blog and playstation.com have merged with the playstation network, will we see more avitars soon?

  • garbage update no in game chatting just useless photo garbage how bout inhancing psn and stop wasting time

  • I look forward to future updates

  • Is there any plan to support NTFS for external USB hard drivers?

  • ok on the count of three everyone say
    “skype!”

    1.
    2.
    3..

  • Since this is about improving media, when should we see PlayTV in the US?

  • Wow, people still making noise about cross-game invites. I’m not even sure most of you know what that means.

How many new games have you all played? I can name a good bunch that actually LET YOU send invites across games.

  • Of all the things the PS3 needs (cross-game voice chat, etc.) you put out a picture application. Where is the gaming support? Isn’t this still a gaming console?

  • SKYPE!!!

  • Nice, I can not wait to see how well the sort option works, but im still waiting for GIF. support!!!!!!!!

  • Been on the blog many of times just never comment.
Good job with the new update more divx support. Hopefully psp gets some soon.

  • When is this update expected to launch?

    Great work by the way

  • hey Jeff dude this is not my psn name… my psn name is only Ownsin not Ownsin7… so whats wrong? please fix this!, thanks for reading.

  • I will be honest this update does nothing for me however I will still download it as i like to keep my PS3 as up to date as possible. What I would like to see is a update that alows us to se what people are doing when playing there game.

I hate when I am playing single player and people message me to play online. If they could see what I am doing then maybe they would not ask me to play online when im playing single player.

  • I do like the cleaner look, and from the looks of it, there are more folder option too.

as for the cheaters that looking for cross-game voice chat. NO WAY. there is no need for that. the only reason someone would want that is to cheat.

hard core gamers do NOT want cross-game voice chat

  • @723 –

Yes, that is a cool feature that does exist already it’s just not widely used. See- SOCOM Confrontation, Little Big Planet, NHL 09 etc.

My only request is that SCE takes all of these features that many people think don’t exist for the PS3/PSN and make them mandatory!

  • Ok, lets simplify this for both the consumers and the Dev team @ Sony…. Ok, why not do a Poll and what we think should be added….. just my two cents, but i think if a collective list of suggestions within a poll could/would make everyone else a little bit more happier… But as i said, thats just my two cents

  • Haha, wow. I was thinking that there hasn’t been an update for the PS3 in a while, and bam, we get one the next day. MIND READERS!

  • WOOOOOO
    FIRST POST ON PSBLOG
….so when is this Update comming out?

  • Looking good! Thank you for the FW updates! :) Hopefully you guys can one day fix the staticy sounding music playback in Ridge Racer V (PS2) and the sound fx bug in Silent Hill (PS1) while being played on my 60GB console. :) Other than that, I’m glad to see more new FW updates! Keep em coming, and thanks for more Divx support. The more support the merrier!

  • I linked my account but the blog is still showing my old screen name with my PSN ID Avatar. Also, I can’t log in on my desktop computer. I’m actually using my cellphone.

  • aww.. poor wittle ps3. it finks its a pc.
one day it will grow up to be a gaming console… one day…

so far we have got home, life with playstation, photo viewer, movie store… ok. all great added value features but isn’t gaming what most people buy ps3’s for.
i mean ps3 has a great line up of game out, and 2009 is another killer year. ps3 has got lucky with 2008 and 2009 with a lot of great hit.. that luck won’t hold up forever. remember ps2.. it had basicly no sleeper hits until god of war came out and mgs2,
ps3 is still in the early adoption phase.. but it doesn’t need to be. people are ready to buy now.. they just don’t want to because 1. its too expensive and 2. sony make it look like ps3 is not a gaming machine.

whenever i hear ps3 advertised its never “great games in hd”! its always… “experience HD movies with surround sound!!”… this need to change.

and support us gamers.. where the ones that pay the bills buy buying all your games..

yes im a hardcore gamer.. i have over 35 games. and more to come. there are great games but we want support as well.

    /rant

  • Yeah it’s ok I guess. Maybe something more to do with music instead of photos.

  • THAN YOU SO MUCH ERIC!!!! YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW HAPPY I AM RIGHT NOW!!!! IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOREVER!!!! NOW I CAN GO ON THE PLAYSTATION STORE WITHOUT SIGNING IN YAAAY YAAAY!!! YOU REALLY DO LISTEN TO US!!!!

  • Cool, i wish for the next update they´d update how downloaded games and Movies are so inaccesible. Should add a My games / Movies section on PSN.

  • @50 Don’t be so angry, cross-system chat is needed. I want to chat with friends while playing a single player game too. I am sure this is in the works so I’m not to worried about it.

@726 I aggree! We need to bridge the gap from devs to end users. I know Jeff and the PSBlog team are relaying the good ideas put forward here, but let’s face it, there is too much noise to focus. A poll advertising wanted features should be up after every new update so Sony can stay ahead of the game.

ps. this app is perfect, I have been doing manual slideshows with transitions/music through xmb. This should save some time.

  • I really wish Sony would just hold these incremental (and inconsequential) updates and bundle them into larger, Seasonal or bi-annual, updates.
Given how long it takes to download and install anything on PS3 (these updates, patches, etc.), sometimes I feel like my PS3 is a progress bar machine rather than a game machine.

  • This will make viewing photos much easier.

  • Looks good.

  • This is a nice little feature here. I’d still like to see WMA Pro codec support. That way I won’t need to turn on my 360 nearly as often. I’d rather play my WMVHD movies on my PS3 with 5.1 sound.

  • looks very slick guys! awesome job, more divx support can’t hurt. A+ in my books.

    peace,
    Lh

  • i would like an inclusion of in-game chat with people on your friends list regardless of what game your in. This not only helps with communication but also makes it easier for your friends to link up for games that your playing together

  • awesome update guys, nice interface and everything, keep up the good work.

  • Thank you for this update Sony, but I am disapointed we still don’t have in game custom music or a cross game chat/invite system.

You may think you have sorted the problem with in game music being left for developers to patch into their game but this is really not the answer Sony. The answer is for you to provide us with access to the music player during our games so we can play our music. For racing games this feature really works wonders. Developers ARE NOT listening to us or you and many developers are not patching their games with custom soundtracks so your solution is clearly not working out. The only solution left on the table is for you to give us the option to have in game music access and NOT developers. Microsoft’s patent may be stopping you I don’t know, but surely you can find a way around this patent. Why not give us in game music from Home or even Life With Playstation?
Anyway please can this be addressed, I have been wanting in game music for the PS3 since launch and that is now approaching 3 years – A VERY long time to wait for a feature wouldn’t you say? Please can you give us this in the next update, I will be the happiest PS3 gamer in the UK if you can.
