Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.
The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.
The 2.60 update also includes:
- Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
- DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.
Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.
As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.
I don’t think it PSN linked my accounts correctly. My username is still dotxhacker. Isn’t it supposed to be my PSN that’s shown instead? >_>
its an ok update :(
Yeah Excelent Feature this time for me
cool…
Woo great move merging everything with our psn accounts. (first post since the the merge)
Unfortunatly I cant help but feel all the great work you guys are doing on developing the ps3 as a media machine is rather pointless. Due to the fact that I cant actually share my media with other devices or the internet(my own content of course; pictures -> flickr maybe?).
I dont store music on my ps3 because I cant share my music with my laptop or desktop pc or mp3 player.
I know I wont bother using the new photo gallery function either as I like being able to view my photos elsewhere in the house, and on my iphone which they sync with nicely just now.
A media centre is pretty much useless to me unless it’s also a media server, as I watch/listen to my content while Im working on my pc upstairs too, or sitting somewhere else in the house with my laptop.
This all seems like a great shame as the ps3 really is becoming more and more awesome, but that awesomeness seemed to be locked away in one place where it selfishly tries to hog all the media.
skype please
Sony’s been releasing plenty of updates, I really hope they are working on a PS2 software emulator.
That would be HUGE. Don’t let me down Sony!
THATS NICE.
Looking forward to see more stuff from sony.
good update
The PlayStation 3 is still lacking afew features that are pretty much required in a Next-Gen system. These things are:
1. Cross-Game Voice Chat
2. Voice Messaging
3. XMB Game Launching/Invites
4. A library of Avatars
please look into adding these too the PlayStation 3.
I have one wish only at the moment. Please look into enabling the creation of playlists when playing music on media servers. I store all my music on a computer that shares it to the PS3. But it’s kind of annoying not being able to set up playlists. People don’t want to hear full albums at parties and it takes time to switch manually between every song. It works on music files stored on the PS3 itself so why not implement it for shared music? This could go for videos aswell.
please confirm it works with images on a media server as well as images on the playstation. it’s useless to me otherwise.
Whilst this looks to be a great addition to the PlayStation 3’s multimedia capability’s I can’t help but wonder why you’ve yet to provide us with a friends system that rivals that of Xbox Live. Sure, you’ve made some progress in doing so and I’m thankful for that, but it’d be nice to have better integration with your friends online.
I agree with – poccnr | January 20th, 2009 at 12:34 pm
They definitely need voice support for private parties. If we can host our own with Teamspeak and all of those on a PC for cheap if not free, then why can’t they host that for all of the PS3’s out there? You know it wouldn’t take that big of an infrastructure to handle it. At least it wouldn’t be anything compared to all of the time they are wasting away on Home.
I just tried Home again today, and I’m still so very underwhelmed that I find myself… disappointed in Sony. Those last three words are hard to say, but they are true when it comes to Home. The online games can only support one person playing at a time? I mean come on, load the arcade game locally and let as many people play as possible! The Red Bull air race is a nice exception to that rule, but then it’s nearly impossible to select the freaking race itself without hitting someone else standing in the way.
I hope this Photo App can live up to expectations and have support for media server files, and not just local files. I’m not going to waste HD space on my 80GB drive for pictures that are already being hosted on my media server. The Divx 3.11 support is nice though.

Eric this update is totaly useless, if you want to add something to media add .mkw so we can view some videos, if you want to add a new feature give us the damn private chat feature i’ve been waiting for it since 2007.
Of course this comment won’t change anything why do i wasted my time…
“This may sound trivial, but could we get more visualisation for the music player? (something like Milk for winamp comes to mind)”
I’m for this 100%, I use my PS3 for movies and music quite a bit and the three visualizers we have now are rather mediocre. The variety on the PSP is far better and I’d love to see some of that on the PS3.
***Looks like an awesome update. Thanks guys. As for people complaining about Cross Game Chat, why do you care so much?
Why do you want to be able to talk people not playing the same game as you? What is the point?***
because also when I play the same game now I can NOT talk only with my friends but I have to listen everybody all! and everybody listen to me!! there are people just screaming in the mic just for fun… and I want to speak with my friends!! example: motorstorm PR.. great game.. online? unplayable without get nervous…
PS3 it’s a game machine.. LET ME PAY PSN IF YOU WANT BUT GIVE ME PRIVATE CHAT!! I love ps3.. everything.. games.. exclusives.. design… but my god… “photogallery”….
“Oh shut up.
No one gives a damn about that stupid feature idiot. Go play with your RRoD box if that is so F-ing important to you.”
First off I’d like to thank you guys for this upcoming update its looking pretty good. The playstation 3 has evolved so much and shed its skin so many times it looks like a new console every time I turn it on. With these FW updates we always have something new to use, so again thank you guys for that.
Re: NathanJ
I feel that your wrong, I’m one person along with many that want cross-game chat, More support for in-game music, and lots of other things many of us were hoping for in the past (around when 2.50 was coming out). I feel that its asking for a lot but these are features that would make the PS3 a better system, don’t see how you couldn’t want it actually. One thing I’m not going to do is keep the bar low, we need to always push the system or it’ll go no where. We need more in-game features and this is one of them that we should want to have.
Keep doing the good work, hopefully you guys are working on some of the features I mentioned ^.^ I’m sure you Sony guys aren’t planning of leaving the bar where it is either.
To answer the question posed by an earlier poster:
The reason for wanting to speak to your friends while you play a different game is simple: social interaction.
You want to talk to your friends. If I’m playing something like ‘GTA IV’ single player, I still want to talk to my friends online. I want to see where they are in the game, ask them how their day was and so forth.
It’s how you hang out with your friends, when they’re not in the same city as you anymore, or if you can’t all hang out at the same location.
Just recently, a friend of mine got a PS3, and wanted to ask me some questions. He was in the middle of playing ‘GTA IV’, and had to quit so that we could talk. He shouldn’t have to stop playing a game, just so we could talk.
Now, this may have to do with a limitation of the system (limited memory that isn’t set aside for the OS), or it may just be further back on the list of things that will eventually happen. Who knows.
But it would be nice to have it. And many people agree with that.
Glad this integration went smoothly! thanks for making it easy on the fan base.
Jeff I cannot stay logged in. Every time I come to the blog now I have to login every time. I used to be able to stay logged in before the PSN integration. I use Fire Fox 3.0.5
Cool long time no update Thx cant wait
Don’t forget to fix error 80022D11
I’ve been waiting to play my saved games since November but can’t because it wants me to start the games over if I want trophy support!! This is beyond ridiculous…
Will this update bring some surprises too? :)
Very impressive update! This one surely tempts me to move my photo collection entirely to my PS3 now. Although, that would force me to upgrade the hard drive first.
The thing that bugged me however… Divx 3.11!
Isn’t that a very old version anyways? I thought Divx 7 was announced recently for PC platform. Will this mean people can still not watch some of their divx videos? How greatly does this divx update help compatibility?
yeah, voice chat if you DON’T have any friends, would seem pointless. Voice chat if you DO have friends… NECESSITY. End of story.
shuffle mode for audio/video (i have 100’s of music vids) would be an excellent addition
Are there plans to allow the PS3 to bitstream DTS HD-MA and Dolby TrueHD with the full data (both core and extension files) so my receiver can decode the information? It’s nice that the PS3 can decode the information but I would prefer my high end receiver perform that function and then I can also finally get the satisfaction of seeing those logos light up on the receiver. PLEASE PLEASE IMPLEMENT THIS!
PS3 users want other things.
Please listen to us.
We want
1. Be able to send voice messges.
-Come on Sony we are in 2009….Send text is so old and irritating.
2. Be able to have in Game Private and Party Chats.
-Kind of annoying when we get an invite to a chat and have to quit the game…
3. Be able to join in someones game from XMB.
-If my friend is playing Call of Duty WaW..let me join his online party!!!
4. Finally, we want to see what the person is doing in the game…
-If he is playing Rock Band..tell us what he is doing in rockband! Is he/she playing online? Or Carrer? Tell us what song? If they are playing COD World At War…tell us what they are doing.. Are they online? if so what game mode?
Can we see these updates in 3.0? Will we see these updates EVER? Probably not, but writing this paragraph was well worth it…”
Copy and Paste this if you think this is what sony should do…!

I would really like to see some kind blog integration into the ps3, like have the news ticker be able to display any new posts on here or even have a built in blog info available from the XMB, hey even make a special interface caht/blog application that accessible from the XMB. ^_^
We all know that the PS3 is a very powerful piece of software. Adding more media capabilities like playing .mkv and all other types of files out there is what I want to see. Look at XBMC! It has all that and more!
Implementing functionality like that on the PS3 would be a real killer! I have friends bying popcorn hour, HTPC and what not. There IS a huge market out there and it’s all up for grabs!
Hi Eric, Can you make it mandatory for game developers to allow custom soundtracks for games if not just sports games like you have done for trophies?
Awesome.
This may be a bit of an out-there request, but could a future firmware update give the PS3 Control For HDMI capabilities? You know, the setting a lot of the BRAVIA HDTVs have? That way we can turn on the PS3 and the TV automatically powers on too, etc.?
That’d be pretty cool.
Thats an amazing looking photo gallery aplication i look forward to using it.
Gee its like sony isn’t try’n won’tcha fix something more important, im’ getting tired of being signed out every 5 minutes, no wonder xbox is winning teh console wars.. stupid photo gallery.
Thank you for the heads-up. Can an update in the future have Life w/ Playstation perform in the background while you play a game, text/voice chat, surf the internet etc?
okay, this sounds great but i have a big favor to ask, please allow language changes in the information bar! mine is only in japansese ><
sorry for double post but MALDINI-1985 some of your suggestions are already in the works and available your suggestion #4 already exists its a developers choice to add thi functionality though and not all games are required to have it (examples of games that use ait are madden 09 and Little big Planet also sony is not like M$ they allow developers to choose whats in there games and do not force these features on them) and suggestion #3 is what home will eventually be able to do. Hope this helps ^_^
More probably could have come out of this update..
However it sounds like a great update none the less!
This is a really nice feature you guys. Please let to next update enhance the multitasking capabilities of the PS3 please. I would love to listen to music while looking at someones profile, browsing the store, voice chatting. Another feature I think would be nice is the ability to play your music, if you jump into a game that supports the Custom soundtracks it should keep playing instead of stopping and then having to start the song over again once the game starts. Keep it up Eric and everyone else on the PlayStation team!
My first comment
Kinda cool, but still part of me hopes they wouldn’t waste time on this and put the effort, time, and money somewhere else like Killzone 2 advertising or maybe voice chat.
Well keep adding features the more the better
cool stuff
this is great dont get me wrong, but its not what is needed. What we do need is cross game chat and voice messages. these are the only things keeping it from being equal to xbox live. PLEASE BRING THESE FEATURES A.S.A.P
thank you
Looks pretty awesome!
great update. i was kinda thinkin BLEH! to the whole photo gallery thing but once i saw the video, its actually quite nice looking! ive been wanting a better organization method for photos on the ps3 (i have a TON lol) and this does it perfectly. great job guys! also, can’t argue with further video codec support in the form of DivX :)

Looks good! do you think Skype would ever be a possibility, my brothers moving to Germany for 3 years and it would be cool to talk with him.
Can’t wait for the update… also just testing the blog commenting with my PSN id :)
Love it, how exactly does it recognise children? That makes life easier when the wife wants to show just the kids….oopps i just said wife! oh dear how old am I!
By the way migration was sweet as a nut!
now wheres my cross game chat? ;-)
