Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

1,717 0

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.

As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.

  • I would never dream of using my PS3 as my photo library, that I have my mac and iPhoto for, the same goes for music.

It looks nice and all, but seen from a users PoV, it looks childish and annoying to use. Kind of like the use of a DVD menu where most people mostly think that “it looks nice, but can I get to press the play button allready???”

Implement that you can connect your PS3 to a mac/pc network and use your iPhoto/iTunes library (or equivalent on a PC like winamp or whatever is used)

I would love to see a function to check if all are ready in a network game.

I would like a way to use the “start new chat” with a keyboard aswell instead of only voice, so you dont have to use the mail system all the time, which is annoying and time consuming.

it would be nice to be able to use an iPhone as keyboard and/or voice device.

Best feature you could add would be better bandwidth to the PSNetwork, for both gaming and to the store.. I cant really feel the 20/20 mbit connection that I have

  • Great firmware update, now i just need more photos on my PS3

  • Thanks Eric
but where is ingame Cross chat

  • Interesting I suppose, but I doubt I will use it.

  • Nice update

  • My wife will love the Photo Gallery application and I can’t wait to show it off to my family and friends.

  • Pretty nice update Eric. One question though. Any idea when (or if) we will ever be able to log on to the PSN with multiple users on the same console at the same time?

PSN logon migration went great btw.

  • I like the new interface and options!

…but when is the Trophy problem with gamesaves that “aren’t mine” going to be sovled?! It’s been nearly 4 MONTHS!!!

  • Sony, as nice as this stuff is you really should concentrate a bit more on the GAMING aspects of the PS3.

-Cross game chat (like xbox now has)
-Party mode (to bring friends together easily in any game like xbox)
    -PS2 backwards compatibility for all

Other than that, yea I’m pretty damn happy with my PS3.

Adding features like this, along with a price drop is what you NEED to get the momentum back.

  • Any updates like this coming for the music/movie side of things? The organisation is pretty bad when you have 600+ albums + 100 films on there!

Also jeff (as a lot of people have probably said) will MKV be supported? (As per Divx V.7)

  • Hi very good update looking forword to the photo gallery!! here´s somethings you can think about the next update improve the psn friends list, when i download something from the psn it stops when i set on a game can you fix it and you can share things with your friends throw psn like music filrs or other things you are doing good job with the ps3 keep it up

  • I have to say i’m truly disappointed in sony atm, for one you made this update, which from even me a person who doesn’t own a ps3 can say is purely media based, but on to my main issue.

I have been (or was, i’m slowly considering abandoning the sony brand) a loyal supporter of the sony brand since 1997 and at this point i’d have to say you have just lost all forms of loyalty to your fans, i’m of course referring to the ongoing betrayal that is backwards compatibility removal.

As if kaz hirai’s glorious insult of saying backwards compatibility was a important part of the ps3 and then removing it a year later wasn’t enough, you still refuse to address the issue entirely, now i’m trying to not be rude here but this is what i believe and in my opinion, it’s a disgrace that it’s come to this.

I’ll say it again, i want a solution to ps2 backwards compatibility, however i’ll also say this, i’ll never buy a ps3 without B/C and i know i’m not the only one, from a business point of view i’m sure you know what i’m referring to.

I hope you do address it soon, i’m not really looking forward to using my savings on something other thsn a ps3 but i’m losing patience.

Well i’ve said my peace, good day to you all.

  • Also, get an advertisement campaign going for Killzone 2. The game looks sick but still a lot of people haven’t heard of it. Just look at Gears 2, they advertised the hell out of it and sold 4 million copies and it’s not like the game is any better than Resistance 2.

  • BY THE POWER OF THE PS3 I COMMAND YOU…

    to sort my photos.

any and all firmware updates should now be required to have power of the ps3 said at some time during the video.

  • Cool, looking forward to that and data access while playing games!

  • Glad to know the updates are still coming!

  • Just fix the battery overlapping the bloody clock. And let us bring the playstationstore in-game and in-home. Other than these, all features are pretty much useless. hell i did not pay 599 bucks to watch photos. I’ll use my computer for that.

  • A Photo Gallery App… I am a Photographer and I have NO use for this waste of time. I could think of much more important features that you SHOULD be working on..

    – In game Music support, not just for specific titles..
    – In game Voice chat (even when not playing the same game)
    – Remote Play, More GAME titles need to be playable on the PSP via remote play.. Things like HOME or Qore would be nice to access via remote play but as of now 99% of titles and apps are NOT supported.

  • I dont usually do the copy/paste thing, but i feel like sony is truly ignoring why people buy a PS3 first, GAMES!

Anyways, This photoapp looks like it took ALONG TIME, and A lot of money to make..and it just makes me sad. No one is going to buy a PS3 for its freaking photo gallery. This time/money could have been spent making your network better.

    Anyways,
    “PS3 users want other things.
    Please listen to us.

    We want
    1. Be able to send voice messges.
-Come on Sony we are in 2009….Send text is so old and irritating.
    2. Be able to have in Game Private and Party Chats.
-Kind of annoying when we get an invite to a chat and have to quit the game…
    3. Be able to join in someones game from XMB.
-If my friend is playing Call of Duty WaW..let me join his online party!!!

Can we see these updates in 3.0? Will we see these updates EVER? Probably not, but writing this paragraph was well worth it…”

Copy and Paste this if you think this is what sony should do…!

Sony. Just listen to us. It will HELP YOU.

  • Awesome can’t wait! plus the music is pretty calming :)

  • Very cool. I cant wait for tomorrow to give this thing a try. I have a billion pics on my system, and I am thinking of upgrading the hard drive because I use so much of it for media.

  • @ 613 I agree more Remote Play, it’s a cool feature but not used enough. I played Bionic Commando via remote play, i thought that Street Fighter 2 HD would support it but no :(

  • nice very nice happy to see psn adding all this extra features to the ps3

  • There’s only two thing I want on the XMB, h264 codec and MKV (or Divx 7) format support. If you do these, I will never complain about anything ever again.

I don’t care about these, but they would be nice:

    1. Be able to send voice messges.
    2. Be able to have in Game Private and Party Chats.
    3. Be able to join in someones game from XMB.

  • thanks for the update

  • We Need In-Game Chat!!

  • Whats with that update? Give me cookies :P

  • cmon sony would be nice to see some more usfull features.,…heres a idea…being able to take screenshots that save directly to your hard drive….this would be extremly usfull for gamebattles users ther would be less disputes because i could jus pres a button and take a picuture of the scores on the screen….i would jus like to see soome practicle and usfull features

  • Thanks Guys! Alot of my shows and movies are in divx format and now I can view them from the PS3. And the Photo Gallery sounds great since I’m a photographer! Thanks alot! Keep up the great work!

  • Like the idea and looking forward to trying it out.

Could we have something similar to help organise Music? Specifically:

    – more ways to organise a large music library, e.g. genre/release date/etc.

    – better way to shuffle tracks in library/playlist

    – support for AAC tags. Right now, tracks purchased from iTunes lose their album info. A pain.

  • Seriously? This is what we get. I just want everyone to know that this is totally LAME>

This is a gaming system not a freaking photo album. I am so sick of having to call my brother or type out message after message to find out what he is doing and if he wants to play a game together. I mean come ON. This is just ridiculus.

I knew the voice chat was bad, but when I bought my Xbox360 a couple months ago I realized just how bad it is! This really needs to be fixed. I understand if you want to make money off the controller keypad, but get real. That is a joke. Just add the feature. It just makes the overall gaming experience better. Until it is a option I will stick to 360 and in the mean time my PS3 will continue to collect dust.

Oh and why the heck can you only log into one account at a time. So if my bro is over we play a game like rockband 2 we have to earn the trophies 2x since we both cant be logged in. Now that is just stupid.

  • Sony why add such a usless feature……….. how about something gamers and really can use. Like cross game video/audio chat…

  • nice update. keep up the good work. :)

  • Photo Gallery ? man thats sucks come on we want improve system more and watching movies in game and chating with my friends in game XMB . please take this Comment Seriously

  • @629
It’s hard taking that ridiculous suggestion of watching a movie while in XMB. WTH are you on? If you want to watch a movie, end the game!

  • Looks like an awesome update. Thanks guys. As for people complaining about Cross Game Chat, why do you care so much?

Why do you want to be able to talk people not playing the same game as you? What is the point?

  • *while in game.

  • AWESOME… this looks like an aplication that would even surpass the W11’s crappy photo app. I can’t wait!!!!

Any idea when this app and FW update will become available? soon hopefully! :)

  • we need cross game chat. we ever going to get any thing about that.

  • I dont usually do the copy/paste thing, but i feel like sony is truly ignoring why people buy a PS3 first, GAMES!

  • Hey, Eric.

I’m not going to get angry that you guys are adding features to PS3; it’s great. However, I think you all might be working on the wrong things. There was nothing wrong with the photo features on PS3 – slideshows are excellent, you can play music with them, etc. Why do you need to add anything to that when priority should be PSN, which is what is still most lacking beside the competition (Microsoft)?

I won’t sit here and list things that should be added to PSN. I’m sure you’ve heard them all a million times, so I hope you are all working on them. One thing I do want to mention that would be good is maybe having a little message notification beside the time on the XMB saying if we have any unread messages. There are so many times that I look through my friends list after a few days and see that I have a bunch of messages that I haven’t read because I may have been doing something away from the TV at the time of the initial notification.

Regardless, keep up the good work, Sony.

  • First off I would like to say that I always welcome any and every update that Sony releases. I figure that something is better then nothing.

However, I don’t like every single one of them. Honestly I’m not that excited about this update because I don’t really like taking pictures so this update doesn’t really excite me much.

But I’m glad to see that you guys are hard at work trying to please the community. :p

  • Looks like a pretty cool Application there. :)

  • i cant wait!

  • It looks good, but we need more focus on games. Please, please! give us PS2 Backwards Compatibility

  • Oh! I almost forgot:
    – subtitles in Divx movies
    – fix the clock
    – more friends in friend list
    – an option for two audio out (Like optical AND HDMI)

    Hope you sill reading this…

  • Great features and tnx a lot, it was really unexpected…

BTW, PLEASE, fix the controller batt showing over the time info when you go to the xmb in-game…it’s a small thing but it would help a lot, take care.

    4. Finally, we want to see what the person is doing in the game…
-If he is playing Rock Band..tell us what he is doing in rockband! Is he/she playing online? Or Carrer? Tell us what song? If they are playing COD World At War…tell us what they are doing.. Are they online? if so what game mode?

  • cool an new update! :D

  • Looks great! Are we going to be getting more video codec support in the near future? I’d like to be able to stream more things from my media server to my HD tv, and not everything that I have is supported currently.
Photo app looks pretty nice, but will the photos have to be stored locally, or can we pull them off of the media server? For example, I’m using Windows Media Player as my media server program, and it works quite well.
