Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

1,717 0

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.

As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.

  • When will Canada get the PSN video store?

  • The only thing the PSN is lacking IMHO is in-game/cross-game group private chat …..please :)

  • Sweet update, but I’d love to have the “infamous” party chat.

“Live!” is not that far away, Sony could easily reach that level by releasing the party chat and making the console more “social”, and more game should have an online system structured on the like of Resistance 2. (Very nice one, even if I have some sporadic problems of disconnections)

Anyway, very nice work with the DivX 3.11 and the Photo Gallery.

  • SUGGESTION OF FEATURE:
putting friend in groups – would be very useful

  • ha i dont have to worry about the glitch cuz my name is the same as my PSN username anyway this looks sweet hopefully you will do the same abouth the music…… you will right? right?…..right?

  • Its pretty cool. Could you guys perhaps add more avatars? OR allow us to use the PS Eye/ take a picture of our Home avatars?

the PSN Integration also went smoothly

  • im the only one on this page :(

  • All i want is possibilty to turn off notification messages of people online ONLY , but the notification of new messege should stay. :)

  • Looking good, well done guys. The more features added the better. Even if they aren’t to everyones taste.

Personally I won’t be using the photo gallery, but I’m sure many others will be.

DivX 3.11 support is welcomed, should fix any of those pesky AVI files that still don’t play.

  • Great! Update it seems the media side of the PS3 is starting to mature. Next, I hope Sony focus on the forgotten Music player because searching and organising 20gb+ of music is impossible!!

    Ezz

  • What a pointless, useless feature that maybe 4 people(the people who comment on this blog) are going to use more than once..

Seriously, this is such a pointless add, PLEASE for the love of god, stop listening to the 5 people who post here regularly and START paying attention to why

THE OTHER CONSOLE is beating the hell out of you. They are beating the hell out of you because of…..

THEIR NETWORK. Cross game voice chat being the number 1 thing that is destroying you guys.

another being every game ships with a mic.

Anyways, for the love of god, stop focusing on this pointless BS that almost no one will use, and give us some network features SO US GAMERS can actually game with our friends easily.

  • Transition went over smooth.

    Liking the new Firmware enhancements.

  • That’s actually really awesome how the software can recognize smiles, *ages*(!!!), and all that. I need to see how well it works, though.

Also, one request: Allow 480i over HDMI for PS1 and PS2 games (especially PS2 games) on the PS3. Why don’t you allow it now? Some kind of ill-founded rights issue?

  • This looks great!
My parents love the photo friendly Playstation 3, i regret that you removed the media card slots on the new ones though.

Keep up the great work and keep the update coming!

  • *console ships with a mic*

  • None of these added features are going to help sell PS3’s, you know. PS2 BC, on the other hand, would boost sales MASSIVELY, as well as make some effort to salvage Sony’s reputation with its fans. You reading this, Eric? Why haven’t you fixed this obvious problem yet, choosing instead to add stuff that doesn’t REALLY matter?

  • Oh and one more thing (in-line with most users on here), please provide more Avatars!

  • The PS3 just get better and better with each update.

I’m personally looking forward to some new avatars, and maybe a newly designed friends list.

  • Photo Gallery is cool but I was hoping 2.60 would be much bigger. 2.40 and 2.50 were pretty awesome as far as firmware updates go. This one is kind of weak. I hope you guys are working hard on features that people care about.

  • Can I ask why you guys are wasting so much time on fluffy stuff like this when your party and chat system is crap compared to Microsoft’s? I’m no M$ fanboy. I hate them, in fact. But their dashboard implementation into games was much better done than the PS3’s.

  • so then Enforcer x, could i watch videos that have an AVI format with the new divx update?

  • Nice update, but I would also like a PS2 emulator that enhances the resolution of the games to HD. That would be sweeeeeeeeeet!! XD

    Keep the nice work!!

  • WHERE IS INGAME VOICE CHAT!!

Oh btw I like how I can use my PSN so I dont need a different account

  • transfer to PSN names was nice and easy. good job sony

  • DivX 3.11, nice one! Just waiting for the possibility to sort my games in alphabetical order now :)

  • It’s a “neat” update but i kind of have to ask myself, why? I’ve got the 60gb PS3 and am down to the middle 20’s (don’t ask me how, I don’t know where it all is) and I just don’t see myself storing my photo gallery on my PS3 to show off when people come over. Maybe insert a thumb drive for a temporary slideshow but nothing permanent. ;/

  • These would be awesome:
WHITECAP (by Soundspectrum) visualization – with this one any further visualizations would be less needed, because this one is a great piece of software, generic and never the same… i think watching it on HDTV 50-60 FPS would be fantastic!
Audio files synchonization with some sort of database, Cracenote for example.. I mean retrieving ID3 info and album art is very useful and would add an extra value for PS3 as a sort of Media center…
Listening to the music is the next most popular feature after (of course) playing (can’t remember the source of this statistics, but it’s the same for me as well)….

  • Sweet :-) BTW migration went OK :-)

  • I hope this firmware update includes the fix to the trophy bug.

For those of you who haven’t heard of it click on this link.

    http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=3465730&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

It’s an error that is caused when you change your email address or password through the XMB, makes it so you can’t play games with trophies or earn trophies

  • Would be nice to see separate options for displaying notifications about friends going online/offline and receiving messages..
It’s important to get notified upon the message received, but those online/offline notifications are quite annoying…

  • Migration went smooth.

That’s a great update, keep coming the applications.

Just one thing, is it to much to ask for mkv support? Would be really awesome (it is already awesome, but would be an GREAT plus!)
    :D

  • I’m all for new features that come with firmware updates. New updates are never a bad thing in my opinion. I do have an issue with new firmware updates centering around a non-needed feature. Let’s be honest here…the PS3 centers around an online community for gaming and other functions. Why have we not received any information regarding private chat sessions while in game? If it is in the works, that’s fine, but we’d like some information on it. Instead the time seems to be spent on other features such as a photo gallery. Now I’m not going to blast other people because it’s a feature that I have no interest in, unlike other people on here. But let’s be realistic here…wouldn’t time spent on adding more function to the online/gaming area of the machine be more beneficial than a photo gallery? Like I said, more features are always a good thing, but I was expecting more from the firmware updates since in-game XMB.

  • @ 400
    This is all great

..but PS3 users want other things.

    Please listen to us.

    We want
    1. Be able to send voice messges.
-Come on Sony we are in 2009….Send text is so old and irritating.
    2. Be able to have in Game Private and Party Chats.
-Kind of annoying when we get an invite to a chat and have to quit the game…
    3. Be able to join in someones game from XMB.
-If my friend is playing Call of Duty WaW..let me join his online party!!!
    4. Finally, we want to see what the person is doing in the game…
-If he is playing Rock Band..tell us what he is doing in rockband! Is he/she playing online? Or Carrer? Tell us what song? If they are playing COD World At War…tell us what they are doing.. Are they online? if so what game mode?

Can we see these updates in 3.0? Will we see these updates EVER? Probably not, but writing this paragraph was well worth it…

Copy and Paste this if you think this is what sony should do…!

    please sony ??

  • So, are we ever going to be able to access the xmb whilst watching the videos on our hdd again?

That was sooo important for parties, so you could choose your nest msuic video whilst still watching/listening to the current one!

This feature needs to come back!

  • I would love to have the ability to chat to my friends while playing to different games. Even the ability to leave video messages.

  • Nice update
when will we be able to chat cross game

  • impressive

  • Let our beloved SE programmers know:
Anyone that wants DIVX 7 and/or MKV support should signe the petition easily found online.

  • Good to know. Update seems good can’t wait to get it. Thanks for the information Eric.

  • Man really awesome update. But i really need to say this… u guys keep giving us awesome updates and i know every PS3 owner is very happy with them and thankful for this updates but man… I think that like 70% of the PS3 users would like an update on the XMB. We would be extremely awesome if you guys did that and i know that 100% of the PS3 owners would love it. If u guys made it more like the competitors experience which I’m 100% sure that u guys can do it even better cus i mean… u guys r Sony… u shouldn’t even have a competition lol. Anyways thanks for the update, very nice!.

  • @575 Yes!
I always forget that, I’ve been wanting this since the first time I saw a friend going online/offline.
Would be great to choose to receive just messages notifications ;)
Keep that in mind PS Team

  • I can’t agree more…

  • That’s a pretty cool photo app. Good job, guys.

I must echo the obvious, in future recommendations for firmware updates:

-Support for DiVX 7 (with mkv support)
    -Group chat system (in-game)
-The ability to chat while viewing movies
    -Support for SAMBA file-sharing
-Support for other filesystems besides FAT32 (so we may store our own HD content externally)
-A dedicated ‘hulu.com’ application for streaming video :)

Keep up the great work. I love my PS3.

  • SONY I need AD2P Support.

    Please Make this happen.

So you can hear all audio in wireless headphones.

  • okay these are all nice updates and all, but when are you guys going to update the PS3 to play PS2 games!???… I have tons of them sitting around and I really would like to play them without having to purchase another system. And that whole thing about not having the capability because of the number of ps3 games or whatever…. please any info on why this has yet to be done would be very nice….thank you.

  • looks great, does anyone know when it goes live

  • I’m kinda wondering what else is in this update, because… it seems like a letdown… I was really hoping for a “HEY, we have some PS2 BC for you poor fools!” or “In-game voice chat won’t suck anymore” or anything that can really get those M$ fanboys to shut their damn mouths about how ghetto our network is.

REGARDLESS, the photo program looks very nice. Granted, I don’t care about photos, especially on my PS3, but it is a nice feature that I’m sure a lot of newer users will enjoy a lot. Really does a good job of showing off the PS3 as a multimedia device.

  • You guys really need to give yourselves a round of applause! This is truely to future of console gaming. I mean the time and work you guys put into these features are really starting to show! I can definitely see a music gallery using the same technology! You guys should think about it if you already haven’t! I can wait to see what happens next! Yo XBox, take notes!

  • To the whiny 12 year olds here. STFU.

Some of us DO use the PS3 for many purposes. Multimedia. Streaming DLNA video. Looking at pictures, etc.. It’s not all about the games.

I think it’s great that Sony tries to keep giving features that pull in a wide audience. I love the movie machine ad. For Sony to gain market share, they don’t need that one killer game. It was proven with LBP. That is a killer game, but it didn’t slingshot the PS3 in the lead.

I also like the guest account feature. My son loves looking at what new costumes he can get this week. This lets him look without me being worried my pocketbook would be drained.

I say to Sony “keep it up”. a company trying to innovate will never come out with that one something that everyone loves, but on the whole it will be somethings all together that will drive everyone to the PS3.
