Happy Holidays from SCEA!

Merry Christmas and 5th night of Hanukkah!

GiftBoyFront

It’s been a tremendous year for us here at on the SCEA Social Media team. For instance, I know that nearly 3 times as many of you will read this message than our last holiday wishes post. And like Tim Tebow after the Ole Miss game, I promise you that nobody will work harder for our fans than us in the next year. (Go Gators, btw)

Personally, I’m really excited to be rolling out new, fan-requested features for you blog readers in early January, and that’s just the start. We’ll be redoubling our Facebook and Twitter efforts, as well as introducing new ways for you to communicate with us.

But before we get to 09 – we rest. I hope that, like us, you’ll take the next week+ to relax, spend time with friends and family, and get caught up on the deluge of games that has washed over us in these past few months. I’ll consider it a success if I finish Dead Space, Mirror’s Edge, Fallout 3, and Prince of Persia by January 5th. Hopefully I’ll have time to leave the house.

Over the next week, we’re turning over the reins to Kristin Neirinckx, who’ll be sharing some tips for you new PS3 and PSP owners, as well as some of our favorite PSBlog contributors. They’ll be sharing their own holiday best wishes and top PlayStation picks of 2008.

To get things started, here are my Top 5 PlayStation faves from the year (a nearly impossible task!):

  1. Valkyria Chronicles – This game took up my entire month of November, which is why I’m way behind on games like Fallout 3 and Call of Duty: World at War. Not that I minded. I’m a huge tactical RPG fan, from Shining Force to Fire Emblem to Final Fantasy Tactics – and this is my favorite from the genre… ever. An absolute must-play. At least download the demo – you won’t be disappointed.
  2. LittleBigPlanet – The game that keeps on giving (see MGS pack this week). I’ve been playing this since early code, and to see the game grow and polish over that time was an awesome experience. Also, I love slapping people.
  3. Rock Band/Rock Band 2 – the official game of Roommate Relations, we’ve played this for, no kidding, hundreds of hours. The tally: we’re on our 4th guitar, 2nd set of drums, and have downloaded nearly $200 worth of DLC.
  4. Metal Gear Solid 4 – reviewers seemed to be handing out “10s” like cheap candy this year – but MGS4 actually deserved it. Have any of you *not* played this?
  5. Hot Shots Golf Out of Bounds/Open Tee 2 – I’ve been a huge fan of the series since Hot Shots Golf 2, and my love has not waned at all. No matter how many PSP games I bring on a plane, I still end up playing HSG the most.

I hate to leave anything out, because I was also in love with Patapon, Street Fighter II HD Remix, Burnout Paradise (still playing that one after all these months!), Devil May Cry 4, Resistance 2, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, and PixelJunk Monsters and Eden, but those are my Top 5. So what were your favorites?

See you in 2009!

  • Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!! 2009 will be great!!!

  • Nice Jeff, thanks for posting on Christmas day. LittleBigPlanet is definitely my number 1, it’s just vastly more creative and original than any game i’ve seen in a while. Anyway, back to the family. See you in the new year.

  • Merii Kurisumasu!

  • Top 5 of 2009? Oh good God, that’s hard. The PlayStation 3 has had a great year. I’ll try, though.

    5. Resistance 2 – Co-op. Need I say more?
    4. GTAIV – Amazing game with a deep story that truly fulfilled the idea of a living, breathing world.
    3. LBP – I’ve never seen a game do anything like this before.
    2. Fallout 3 – Wow. That’s all I have to say. I’ve beaten the game twice, 2 full 60+ hour playthroughs, and I’m now on my third and I’m STILL seeing things I didn’t see before.
    1. Metal Gear Solid 4 – A Masterpiece. What more must I say?

The games of 2009 I’d recommend keeping an eye on include KZ2, inFamous, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, God of War 3, Fat Princess, Trine, WKC, and (I’m not kidding) Afro Samurai.

    Can’t wait!

PSB Staff and fellow commenters, have a safe and merry Christmas!

2-can you kindly contact konima to ask kojima team to add Trophie support to MGS.

  • Merry Christmas everybody! My top 3 for the year are…

    3. PixelJunk Monsters- My girlfriend and I gleefully spent many hours building towers together, and riding the roller coaster of emotions of victories won and lost.
    2. Little Big Planet- This is one of the most charming games to come around. Redefines the “2-D” platform genre. It’s a “happy” game that is amazingly creative and unique. I have tunes stuck in my head all day while I’m at work. What a versatile new mascot Sony hath found…Sackboy! Genius!
    1. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots- The ultimate fan service for fans who have followed the series for 20 years. This isn’t a traditional video game, it is a profoundly moving, action packed interactive experience. In-game graphics are the best ever for a console game. Spectacular sound effects! A heroic final mission to save the world for legendary hero, Solid Snake. This game is a masterpiece and the new standard bearer for future video games.

  • and a very happy holiday(s) to all of you too.

  • My top 5 are as follows:

    1. LittleBigPlanet (Merry sackmas peeps, try out my level sometime! SuperUltraHappyFunPlace)
    2. WipEout HD (My eyes still hurt, and that’s from the newly patched ‘skilled’ difficulty)
    3. MGS4 (thank you Konami!)
    4. Dead Space (what? EA making a really amazing original IP? Will time and space now rip holes in each other?)
    5. PixelJunk Eden (or Monsters, post trophy patch. Man that was fun getting those…)

I hope you all had a semi-happy year (we’re all doing our best during the worst of times)

  • Ohh no a Gator’s fan lol jk, good luck in the National Championship game! My top 5 would be:

    1. LittleBigPlanet
    2. Metal Gear Solid 4
    3. Crisis Core: FF7
    4. Dead Space
    5. Crash Commando

    5. PixelJunk: monsters – Finally the Tower Defense genre gets noticed! and they made excellent and cool style TD game

    4. Prince of Persia- The art style is completly amazing and unique! i just cant stop smiling as if im looking at a moving graphic novel.

3.Call of Duty 4 – This game has to be one of the best First Person Shooter games out in the market, hooray for modern warfare.

2.Resistance 2- Unlike its predecessor, it didnt scare the living daylights out of me! even though a few tangles with the grims gave me a jolt ;)

1.LittleBigPlanet- This game is more addicting then WoW! Ill tell you a story, i was walking through Bed Bath and Beyond, wandering looking for gifts for my mom then my head turned and i began to say “How could i build this in littlebigplanet?” i laughed.

    My 2008 top 5:
    1. MGS4
    2. Uncharted
    3. Burnout Paradice
    4. Heavenly Sword
    5. LittleBigPlanet

    Runner Ups:
    1. Motorstorm: PR
    2. Lumines Supernova
    3. Wipeout HD
    4. GTA4
    5. R2

Vakyria Chronicles is really not my type of RPG. But if they patch it with Trophies I’ll buy it. Highly rated title.

    Disappointments
    1. Socom (Great Headset though)
    2. GT5 Prologue (Poor online mode)
    3. Mirror’s Edge
    4. Army of Two
    5 Prince of Persia

  • Honorable Mention:
    Dead Space

  • Im with the few others jeff. But I just left the 320GB hard drive and graduated up to the 500GB hard drive (This stuff is dirt cheap now, under $200 easily).

I think I have around 40 Demos and around 30 downloadable games from PSN on the hard drive, plus numerous hours of video from PSN and such so 500GB hard drive for teh win.

My Goal for games to beat are:
    1. LBP

    3. PixelJunk Eden
    4. Get all 3 Ferrari’s in GT5:Prologues
    5. Get all the treasures in Uncharted for some Trophies.

  • @59

Dude, I’ve sent countless emails to Konami and I just get an automated reply. Who knows if they’ll ever patch it? It might be irrelavant at this point since we’re practically in 2009. I wouldve love to go through the game again for Trophies a few months ago but now that we’re about to hit 2009. I’ll be busy with Street Fighter 4, K2, Infamous, Resident Evil 5, GoW 3, Uncharted 2 and a ton of PSN titles. MGS4 is not going to be in my radar at this point.

  • Merry Christams everyone, hope you all got what you wished for.

    My Top 5 are

    1) MGS4
    2) BurnOut Paradise
    3) Unchated Drakes Fortune (I picked it up sometime this year)
    4) God of War: Chains of Olympus
    5) Patapon

Two games that I thought would be this years GOTY or close to it were Resistance 2 and Socom Confrontation, sadly I was very dissapointed by both.

Overall not a bad year, I can’t wait for Killzone 2 I hope it makes up for what Socom and Resistance 2 didn’t provide. As for PSP games I can’t wait for Resistance Retribution, I have absolute faith in Sony Bend!

  • My Top 5 For 2008

    Wild ARMS XF
    Metal Gear Solid 4
    Valkyria Chronicles
    Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
    LittleBigPlanet

This was such a great year. :)

  • i loved the demo for Valkyrie Chronicles, please get Sega to make a trophy update for it!

  • Sitting here reading everybody’s top 5 list and I have to say I’m kind of stumped at what I would say my top 5 games are. I know LBP would be in there, Burnout would be in there, PJE and PJM would be in there. I guess the other game would probably be Warhawk. Played lots of that early on in the year. So let’s give this a try.

    1) LBP
    2) PJM
    3) PJE
    4) Burnout Paradise
    5) Warhawk

Should toss in a way to see how many games you’ve played on the system and how often or how long. Like an internal database or something.

I’d also like PlayStation Trophies. Trophy for watching 50 Blu-Ray movies on the PS3. Trophy for getting Lv.5 Trophies, or stuff like that. Just an idea!

  • Merry Christmas from Brazil!

    My favorites games of 2008

    1-MGS4 ( BRING THE TROPHIES KONAMI!!! )
    2-LBP
    3-FALLOUT 3

  • Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!

It’s been a rough year Sony but thank you for a much better effort than 07! :)
Hopefully by 09 your product will get more cash for you :p

What HASN’T been rough however is playing all the excellent games on offer.

    Top 5 you ask?

    1) Valkyria Chronicles – Horribly, HORRIBLY underrated game.
This is simply the best game on PS3 (for me).

    2) Grand Theft Auto 4- Not as big and varied as other GTAs but can’t blame it as it’s the first GTA of the next-gen consoles and what it does offer is far greater than any other game.
SOOOO many mechanics and gameplay elements in one and they all work almost perfectly.

    3) Metal Gear Solid 4- Well, duh. Hideo is a genius.
    Snake will be missed :)

    4) LittleBigPlanet- Simply fun! I’ve got the MGS level and character packs too and it just made the game muuuch much more fun! Which is just unprecedented!

    5) Burnout: Paradise- Excellent game with great online.

  • Valkyria Chronicles = The only RPG I have ever liked, hell, I fell in love with this game. I just wish people would stop underrating it and see how truly great it is :( It was said best by PS3fanboy that if you didn’t get this game, your not truly a PS3fanboy. Period.

  • Have a good rest Jeff!

Sony’s goal for next year should be to get indie devs, such as myself (www.teamkaizengames.com /endshamelessplug) better access to develop on PS3 kinda like XNA…..

PLEASE? I will mail you a box of reallly good cookies man I promise!

  • merry christmas to all of @ sony and to all the blogers, hey jeff maybe for a christmas present to me you could add me up,psn name is mendezgato.

A few games I hope to one day be able to go through are Valkyria Chronicles, Mirror’s Edge, MK vs DC, CoD:WaW, Resistance 2, Motorstorm: PR and so many more that I probably keep forgetting. If only I were a kid again with lots of money and time.
