Official Bluetooth Headset for the PLAYSTATION 3

170 6

Hey everyone, I’m Anand Agarwal, Product Manager for PlayStation Peripherals. Two weeks ago, we informed you about the Wireless Keypad for PS3, and today we want to tell you more about the official Bluetooth Headset for PS3 that we unveiled during SOCOM Media day.

PS3 Bluetooth

This headset will be offered in one retail version of SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation this October, as well as a standalone peripheral this fall. It features a prominent Mute button and a Charging Cradle. It will work with not only your PS3 but with Bluetooth enabled cell phones. But this is information that you already know about. Today we want to talk about some really cool features of this Headset that we have been working on behind the scenes. These features will be unlocked by the PS3 through a firmware update that is scheduled for this fall.

  • The headset will feature “High-Quality (HQ) mode” with PS3. In this mode, the headset will take advantage of advanced voice technologies and noise cancellation techniques to provide clear and wideband voice input to the PS3. The HQ mode will ensure a much better voice chat quality on the PS3.
  • HQ mode will also enable accurate speech recognition required to support or enhance ‘Voice Command’ and ‘Voice Animation’ features. Voice Command was originally used in SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs for PS2 to administer the AI-controlled teammates using the WHO, WHAT, and WHERE format (example: Bravo, Attack, Nav Point Zulu). Voice Animation refers to the in-game character mimicking you during voice chat. With HQ mode, these features can be enabled on a much larger vocabulary in select PS3 games.
  • PS3 will display an in-game status indicator exclusively for this headset that will show the headset’s connection status, battery charge level, speaker volume level and microphone mute status.
  • Tired of wearing the headset during a long multiplayer gaming session or is your headset battery running out of charge? Just dock the headset in the supplied charging cradle, and the headset will work as a desktop microphone while charging.
  • Last but not least, the headset will automatically pair with the PS3 by connecting with a USB cable.

SCEA was one of the first companies to popularize VoIP technology within a console videogame through SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs for PS2. As you can see, we have made a great effort to expand on this legacy and develop the most compelling headset for the PS3 community. We are really excited to bring it to market this fall with the SOCOM: Confrontation bundle ($59.99 MSRP) and as a standalone peripheral ($49.99 MSRP).

  • Seeing as you guys will be releasing a firmware update to totaly take advantage of this new headset and the HQ Mode, does that mean the Playstation Networks Video Chat Rooms also support this HQ Mode?

    Thank you

  • My old BT < Official PS BT

But seriously what is wrong with you people? R2 Collectors Edition now this BT? I’m gonna be broke by the end of this fall!
[lol] Great news great job keep it up Sony w00t!

  • @68: I don’t know. I just do it. I mean, it lies and gives me 404 errors, but it still works.

I have javascript off, if that helps.

  • OH SWEET!!!…good thing i pre ordered and fully paid for Socom bundled with the headset…looks like some AMAZING features…glad to see this…can’t wait!

  • great questions. I was just wondering how big is it and how heavy? will it flop arround or fit snuggly and or will it hurt the inner ear where the speaker goes in?

  • when is the stand alone headset coming out?

  • I hope there will be more bundle of this headset and game in the future, like the little big planet and so on…. The numbers of people using headset is too small. When I play on line I won’t even bother to connect my headset since there is no point to have one if others are not using one.
Moreover, I hope there will be a cheaper voice solution for all ps3 players, like a cheap usb connect head set from Sony, so that people prefer not to spend $40 on a high end blue-tooth headset can get a cheap usb head set instead, this may solve the problem with the little numbers of headset users on PSN.

  • Oh Yeah!!! Pretty clever, I also like the bundle price, that’s a great offer, you just can’t refuse

  • I’ll likely get this headset (actually 2, one for myself and one for my husband who has his own PS3) – BUT… what assurances do we have that Sony will support this headset?

We bought the Jabra headsets bundled with Warhawk thinking that Sony would ensure support when our motorolla stopped working after a system update. The Jabra headsets worked great until the most recent system update when they stopped working. Sony seems to deny that a problem even exists – so we’ve had to go back to wired USB headsets (which are really hard to find!!!).

What guarantees do we have that a system update won’t make our “new” Playstation headsets into nothing more than a pretty table decoration along with a long line of headsets that came before??

I love using a wireless headset… I hate when that headset suddenly stops working reliably after a system update (and we each have a jabra that stopped working on both my 60GB unit, and my husband’s 80GB unit – so it’s not my imagination that our headsets aren’t working!)

  • bluetooth headset are so common and readily available for so cheap why even bother, why not spend time creating oh I don’t know….a wireless microphone?

  • This is a Deffinetly Mus’t Have both the Sony Official PLAYSTATION3 Bluetooth Wireless Headset for Sony PS3 PSN and SOCOM U.S NAVY SEALS Confrontation

  • Price looks good with the game and headset combo, but I hope it’s an upgrade from the WARHAWK headset… I think most were let down by it…Even though I am a skeptic I’m sure I’ll buy it anyway just to see…I already had a headset before I bought WARHAWK, and after testing the headset that came with the game…I ended up buying the game without the headset because of the poor quality.

I’m not trying to hate on anybody that got the headset and loves it…just stating my own personal opinion.

  • awesome guess thats all the replies will be getting on this

    kind of a disappointment

  • Lmao

Those prices are crazy xD 20 dollar difference between headset and non headset, yet the headset is 50 by itself xD

  • Honestly guys, 50 bucks for this headset is good. Some bluetooth headsets are 60 plus. My Logite ch one was 80! Some are even 100 bucks!

  • Nice. Now how about a bluetooth headphones where we can listen to the game.

  • @ 157 tele…
You hit the nail right on the head. i agree with you 100%.
A 19.99 wired usb headset would match the 360’s wired headset. Also the Wireless 360 headset costs 39.99 so that would be a good price point to match. If anything I love the wireless mic for 360 better than the wired but it’s good to have a wired mic when the headset needs to be charged. I will be buying the Socom bundle no question but I am playing the Socom BETA right now with my original Official PS2 USB headset since it works “WAY” better than the Warhawk BT mic.

  • hope u read this but will the bule tooth work wit the psp oh and will there be more compatibilty with the ps3? thx bliggins–44

  • Is this going to be compatible with LittleBigPlanet? I’m getting this already, but it would be so cool too see your Sackboy’s mouth moving as you talk so that it looks like it is the one talking!

  • impressive, i can’t wait to get my hands on it.

  • Hopefully, this will the ONLY and LAST bluetooth headset anyone will have to buy for the PS3. I hope this product works as great as it looks.

  • Of course the official headset is bluetooth. Why? So when the headset no longer holds a charge you have to buy a new one. Sony learned their lesson from the last socom usb headset. Some people are still using it.
I also wonder if this will fix issues with games that have mic problems. Whether it be usb or bluetooth everyone has problems with GTA4. I’m guessing it has to do with Rockstar/Take2 not giving a crap. If you call their tech support line and ask when they will fix the mics it’s the same pre-scripted bs:”Unfortunately we don’t have an answer for you at this time. Stay tuned to the website….blah blah blah etc.” Any way I really hope it fixes things.
I’ll still buy the socom bundle because Socom kicks ass and I can finally play a game of Battlefield with a mic (btw that warhawk bluetooth sucked).
P.S. to all people I team killed in GTA4 on cops ‘n crooks I’ll do it again in a heartbeat because you were a NOOB without a headset. GET ONE.

  • when i first say the part where u put it in the sand it will be like a desktop mic i thought it meant u have the stand plug in 2 your pc it would act like a mic 4 the pc but once i reread it its even better and my pc has bluetooth in it i just need 2 figure out how 2 get it 2 work

  • I already pre-ordered mine at gamestop saturday but those idiots didn’t give me a freakin’ a code to access the beta. I tried calling them but they keep saying they don’t have any left. Guess I’ll have to wait for the actual game, at least I get this AWESOME HEADSET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Does this only charges by usb?

I just don’t like having to charge things from the usb port on the console, I just got a controller charge station. The cord was so short on the controller, I could barely sit down. Plus the new systems reduce the usb ports to 2. I mean it supposed to work with other bluetooth phones but it gonna be tough to charge it when it has to be done by USB/PS3.

Anyways I need a set, the high price compared to the bundle is annoying but I’ll consider it. PS3 needs more users with headsets and having a good system headset (hopefully) is a start.

  • This is a cool deal will it work with the motor storm pacific rift game as well ?
