As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.
We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

oh its missing..!
@cytrics
ok wtf, dont care what he said its sad that they havnt done this patents can be worked aorund easily than this……….its an important feature that has not been implimented.
Almost 2000 comments and no official update from Sony. If they don’t get this sorted before E3 then they are going to have problems as anything they show will be completely overshadowed by this mess.
Why didn’t you wait until E3 before releasing this Sony? Why Sony why?
@1826
I agree, we ALL have a right to whine and complain about stuff this company called Sony has promise its customers for so freaking long. The playstation 3 customers have been waiting and waiting for every freaking thing on this machine. Delays after delays, buggy games from third party, missing features from the firmware, home. So much stuff, and Sony still thinks the customers is going to stay content for a long time.
This is too much freaking waiting. Why the hell buy a machine if you can not get new content on time for the machine. Come Sony, you are running out of fuel to burn and you are just burning yourself in the end. I want to see the OLD Sony Playstation brand of the PSONE and PS2 era. The powerful and mighty Sony.
You need to force the developers to support trophy and in game music, if not they are not going to do it. Sometimes you got to be a dictator to lazy people.
Has there been any updates as to when 2.40 will be up and running again? (Officially)
I already have the update myself, but i would like to get this update on the go for everyone. Also, once its patched up as normal, Naughty Dog can give me Uncharted Trohpies.
@1850 and people w/ similar view points
if people actually did their research and knew that Microsoft had the patent on in-game music then they’d realize that Sony can’t really make in-game music a mandatory thing like XBOX has it, unless they enjoy being sued anyway..which most people do enjoy right?
and if all we do is complain complain complain, why would they listen to us? They’re giving us one of the biggest updates the PS3 has ever received and people are getting pissed about waiting 2 or 3 seconds to see a clock? I think that if there are constructive, well thought out arguments presented to Sony here on this blog response, I think Sony would be more open to listening than to people who just whine and moan about things. Yeah they haven’t told us what’s going on with 2.40, and I’m guessing because this says “2.40 Status”, it’s either going to be – It’s up, or it’s down. So as much as I’d like to see the update go live again (though I too, all ready have it), we’ll just have to wait for Sony to iron out the problems and give you guys a product that will be safe for you PS3’s to download and install.
does anyone know a date when this update is available?????????????????
@1852
But that is all we are saying! Instead of giving it to us all messed up. We already waited this long. I mean, we asked for it but, nobody said or even expected it to come out before E3. Nevermind the way they released it, with all these bugs. Anyway, all we are asking is for a quality update for our quality product!
also, I might be wrong but, how does MS have a patent on in-game music, per se? I mean, that’s like having a patent on playlists. There is no way they have a patent over code that lets you play your own music over a develpers game on a company’s hardware system. But again, I might be wrong but, I highly doubt it.
@1854
i might have been to broad about the patent description, here’s a better look at it http://www.ripten.com/2008/03/31/microsoft-owns-patent-for-in-game-custom-soundtracks/
and I can see where you’re coming from. I do think it’s annoying when there are bugs in long-waited items and patches. But what can we do ya know? Let’s just hope that Sony can get it back to us with a safer build to it.
Works for me without any problems. I’m a owner of 40GB PS3
Good ecummings1. You just proved to me that you can read past a 6th grade level. I’m glad you payed attention to detail. Now that I know you aren’t as dumb as you sound. Let’s get down to business. How many times hae you had to replace your system due to that red ring issue? Why are you so bitter about the ps3? (Can’t afford it?) Maybe you should live in your moms basement so you can save some money to get a ps3? Maybe you don’t have any friends on you xbox live network and you just happen to be on this site to sway some people to get a xbox so you can make some friends. You must be bored playing with yourself? Look, just man up and get a ps3, stop cross dressing because that’s the only way you can get close to a woman, and stop nagging like a bitter b*tch. You’ll feel better about yourself after you do that. Oh, and my ps3 still works, since you asked.
Installed 2.4 so far:
Super Stardust HD would not load, it crashed and forced reboot when trying to get the 4.0 patch. I deleted the game and the saves and reinstalled from PSN and had no problem.
Rock band worked, but when i try to download/install ingame, the download button does not work. I have to exit game and DL song from PSN.
Heavenly Sword worked fine.
Singstar worked fine
Blue Ray Movie worked fine (3:10 to Yuma)
microsoft do have a patent on playing music in games i was on a web site an it took me to a link that showed me the patent
@1854,
Well that’s understandable that what some of you all are saying. But let’s face it, it’s how some of this posters are coming out of their mouth with it that’s the annoying part.
Secondly, what you’re saying I do partially agree w/ but I think the thing that a lot of these ‘impatient’ posters don’t understand is that programming and creating software is no joke. I mean, a lot of what we see is the ‘end product’, but behind all of that are hundreds upon hundreds (maybe even thousands!) of lines of ‘written’ codes. That’s not even to mention that several programmers are usually touching this one project at any given time.
The point I’m getting at is that, programming software can throw curveballs when you at least think it. I’m sure Sony never had intentions on releasing something ‘buggy’–if that where the case they’d probably have called it ‘beta’ 2.40. I’m sure when Sony released 2.40 they did it w/ the intent that was, at least in eyes, a very solid product. Who knows maybe they didn’t test it on enough SKUs–as there are quite a few PS3 variants still out there that people currently own–or maybe it could have been hidden problems on the people’s systems that are acting up that clashing w/ the update, you just never know.
Of course, there are many that have DLed it w/ no problems; just as there are some that are having issues. Give Sony kudos, for pulling it and at least telling why they had to. Hell, we’d all know what would happen if they were somebody like MS–they’d probably deny anything was wrong, until forced to admit by angry RRODed out 360 owners that crap was actually bad within the systems hardware. I think the another thing that people have to understand is that the guys and girls that write these blogs aren’t the developers or programmers of these firmwares, so honestly don’t know anymore than we do and they can only probably tell us no more than what they are given.
Oh yeah, on a side note to MS patent thing, yeah I do believe someone actually posted on this blog the US patent number for MS right to in-game music. I’d assume you could look up on the official US patent website. So that would fairly make it impossible for Sony to make it a mandatory thing….of course that unless they want to be ballsy and do it anyway….and probably get sued up ying-yang by MS. My guess it is that they’re probably not feelin’ that idea right now. :)
they have paten6ted there way of doing it this was on a web site
Microsoft implemented the ability to play your own music during gameplay in their first gaming system, the Xbox. The functionality naturally moved over to the Xbox 360, where Microsoft was patiently waiting for a patent to go through.
The custom soundtrack patent was submitted well before the release of the 360, presumably with the intention to lock down the feature for the next generation. It wasn’t issued until mid-2006, luckily just before the US/Japan release of the Playstation 3.
The US patent named “Method and Apparatus for Creating and Playing Soundtracks in a Gaming System” appears to cover any application that allows users to create soundtracks using their own audio tracks, such that they can be played during the execution of the game instead of the game’s default soundtrack.
Comprising of a thorough list of points and diagrams, the patents stand out claim is outlined thus:
1. A method comprising:
– receiving a request to launch a game in a gaming system;
determining whether the game has a user-associated soundtrack;
– if the game has a user-associated soundtrack:
launching the game; and
playing the user-associated soundtrack;
– if the game does not have a user-associated soundtrack:
allowing a user of the gaming system to select a soundtrack to play while the game is executed; and
playing a default soundtrack if the user of the gaming system does not select a soundtrack.
Just adding my voice to those who are saying that while the install went fine, and 2.4 seems to work fine… it causes huge bluetooth voice problems in Warhawk and other games.
Playing without voice is very simply NO FUN. Even when accessing the XMB audio – it shows the mic as connected, but the voice testing does not work. Turning the mic off and on again also does nothing. Sometimes one can even hear others through the mic… but oneself is muted somehow.
VERY ANNOYING…. and the trade off of ingame XMB for voice is very simply not worth it (though it did provide a very slow way of everyone communicating … “hey, my mic’s not working!” LOL!)
Hopefully they will find a way of downgrading us to “before 2.4” or a very fast patch to fix at the very least the voice in 2.4 for those of us that have it unfortunately installed.
Needless to say Sony is going to have their hands full when they get their lazy asses back to work.
Hi everyone. I’ve been reading this thread with interest. Here’s my 2 cents.
I understand why some people get pi**ed at things like this. Unfortunately, the internet, and the speed of new technology in general, has lessened our ability to wait for things. As a race we have become impatient buggers. I know – being the geek that I am (haha) – that I get niggled when my computer takes 2 seconds longer to boot. And then I take half an hour speeding it back up again *sigh*.
But, in all seriousness, this is not the same at all. Just consider these points for a moment. Firstly, these updates that some of you moan and cry about are made by actual people. They don’t materialise on Sony’s servers, ready made and shiny. People are fallible – we make mistakes! Secondly, if you had any experience of a programming environment, you would understand the pressures of modern office politics. The programmers always want to add new features, the testers always want more bugs fixed first, the ‘men upstairs’ either want the thing out the door, or more features added. So you can see how it’s a bit of a lose lose situation. It is something of a miracle these days, when something is released, on time, and bug free.
Whether you are a programmer, tester, or god forbid, the guy who takes all the crap when things go wrong (regardless of whether it was your doing or under your control at all), you do your very best to make sure that your end of things is ok before the product goes out the door.
Don’t you think that Sony tested this thing to death? Of course they did. On every single SKU. Over and over again. Testing is a damn tedious job, and I am always impressed at the tenacity of good testers who test EVERYTHING over and over and over again. There was no way in hell that Sony would have ‘rushed’ something this big. Also, this was not a little bug fix .1 release. This was a major re-architecture of the entire firmware. It is damn impressive what these guys have achieved, especially in the given time frame.
Give these guys some support. They would never have released without being 100% sure that everything was working, as far as they could tell. There will always be bugs as long as there is software. That is a given. Those of you who think otherwise either live in cloud cuckoo land, or you don’t have a damn clue.
I don’t know the reason behind the problem. None of us do. However, it works absolutely fine on mine and many other peoples PS3’s. My personal theory is that there was a server problem, causing packets of data to be lost while downloading (for some users).
I am not attacking anyone. In fact there are some great points made here. BUT, the whining is driving me nuts.
Thanks for reading :D
1863,
I can agree with what you are saying. On the other hand, I would probably be upset too if I was counting on something to work and be there 100%. I think if all the people in here really claim to be Sony fans, you have to wait and rely on them to make it right. That doesn’t mean waiting is fun, but really, what other option is there?
1863 that’s a well thought out post and I have to agree with him/her on that.
Meaning no disrespect to the bloggers but have we forgotten that the developers are HUMAN?? Heaven forbid they should make a mistake. I too am suffering from the firmware fiasco but I know that they are human and mistakes happen occasionally and constantly complaining about it won’t do anything to speed up the process. At least they have acknowledged the issue and are working on it instead of denying it like most other companies that I know of. Sorry to sound so mean but we are all HUMAN and make mistakes.
Well said 1863, well said. Sony will get to the root of this problem one way or another.
And 1866, EXACTLY.
I feel bad for the people having this problem, especially for the ones who had a console break on them. My PS3 is doing fine but I won’t brag about that. I hope and pray that Sony finds out what happened. Having a console break on you is not fun at all.
Developers ARE human. These things do happen. Even if you search, and search carefully as possible, sometimes bugs are very hard to find.
@1863,
Man, that’s the most elegant way of making a point in favor of all those programmers out there that I’ve read thus far. Hell, you definitely worded so much better than what I could have. :)
Geez, I just recently finished taking Java I programming class (yuck…w/ currently being in Java II; now that something to really cry about :( ) as a MANDATORY for my Bachlors degree studies in IT and it was HELL! Let me tell you, after amazingly passing that course….I can honestly say that is when I truly gained a newfound respect for anybody that takes this as full-time career path….because I know for sure I couldn’t do it. (Patience ain’t my friend on that kind of stuff, but Frustration seems to kick it w/ me a lot…)
@1864
…and you’re completely right, Echo307. As torturous as I’m sure it is for those that are definitely having issue after updating, I would be sure that those would be the people that want Sony to do what they can to make sure that they correct whatever could be the issue. That way, no further damage to other peoples systems will develop.
I’d rather wait and know that they’ll digging in to fix these issue than for them to just rush to quiet the people then it being 10x busted up than it was before.
@ 1864, 1865 and 1867
Thanks for the positive comments :)
@ 1869
I appreciate that, thanks. And I have a lot of respect for you passing that degree. Unfortunately, learning something like that, in that kind of environment can be hell!
I had another thought a while after posting earlier. Did people forget this is the 4th of July weekend? I’m in the UK myself, but Damn people. Would you like to go to school/work instead of being with your family? Didn’t think so…
imagine how frustrating it is to SONY the goal is to beat the compition which we will do,but MS has had many flaws,this is really the only one sony has had,but with E3 this deffently dont need to hit the topic boards and get blown up,eye guess only reason it has is because of the hastiness of getting this update and PSN updates up and running quick as possiable.If it was fixed today it would be forgotten and forgiven,if 2,3 more days pass and nothing,then maybe not so suttle.
not tring to throw gas on the fire but .GIF FILES,take like 2 sec,just saying **cough** .GIF ANIMATIONS
ON TODAYS NEWS PS3N .(ESPN).Sony fixes 2.40 with gif files. in doing so gas prices drop to a record low 2 cents per gallon,and my tiny little nipples went to france
wow eye think eye just broke a record “watching the ps3 for X amount of time waiting on SSDHD update come on guinness.
Can anyone tell me a place to download the firmware??
sure demonoid.com,ps3hacks.com,some uk site within this blog,and many others but eye wouldnt do it the ps3hacks one is a .rar file,the demonoid one is a torrent in which u maynot be able to use the uk one might be legit go through the blog and find out
@spaz0023 how do i dl it? do i go to that site on the ps3 or the cpu and if i do go on the cpu how do i transfer it to the ps3
dl at ur own risk
i believe itll work but idk how im suppose to dl it..
matt from what site
use flash card or memory stick
neogaf.com
look at post 1864
gotta create an update folder,then update it,and put it in the folder ur good to go
u probally allready know but just in case create an update folder on (usb,ms,sd)whatever ur using then put it in there and update via storage
Any update, pleassssee… my PS3 won’t play DVD’s now (I have a ticket open with Sony, but don’t wanna pay the $150 for a quick fix).
can n e body tell me why mah update worked but i cant play in game music…..i mean come on sony…if ur gonna update stuff do it right i popped in all mah games and none of them supported dat stuff….yall need 2 fixed dat problem and stop being lazy and add tropies 2 all da game…and in game music 2…seriously
the game programmers have to add the support not sony.they did there part there are several psn games that u can indeed listen to custom music on,but not msg4,not yet
I actually installed 2.40 after reading about PS3s ‘bricking’. Not because I have 10 PS3s, or because I like setting fire to myself for laughs, but because I had no reason to believe all the rubbish I was reading. Google 2.40 update and you will find it in 10 seconds or less. HOWEVER, it’s your risk. Sony removed it for a reason. As I said earlier, I genuinely think there was a server problem which caused some downloads of the update to go wrong, but I could be utterly wrong. Read what you can find, and then make your own desicion. OR, be patient, unlike the rest of us who installed it already ;)
Oh and i dont care how long it takes 4 sumthing 2 come out…jus as long as its workin right and im 100% happy wit it….but wit da 2.4 update im only 60%…Sony yall really need 2 work on da other 40%…seriously…In game music is da feature im really look’n forward 2…..so make it happen….:)
eye agree my bro’s ps3 died cause he only downloaded half of eye think it was 1.80 or whatever along time ago and eye believe that is whats happening also the update is probally fine which is why its taking them so long to fix something thats not broken
if severs are clogged and heated and u only get half an update ur ps3 is most likely gonna mess up enless u reformat and lots of things that arent for sure gonna work
besides all dat who has cod4 look’n 4 new friendz now since mines can support up 2 100 buddies now…..mah online tag is “Dapriince” add me..
