As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.
We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.
I can see how you’re saying someone should be cleaning out their desk for bad software…but how do we know the few people that have the bad experience didn’t download incorrectly…like shut of the system or something during download….Seems most people that got it have it running just fine and are impressed by it. Let’s see what Sony says when they find the problem. I’m willing to give them a chance…and you know…people have been pushing Sony to get this thing out for some time now.
hijaker77….I kind of agree..but you know what…those developers are working on a lot of other projects right now…they don’t want to go back to put in trophies on the older games…but I think in games to come, we’ll have that support. I read another blog that said there were a few developers that have already said this.
I just wanna get this firmware so I can move on with my PS3 gaming life……………I can’t even be happy with knowing “OKAY i am going to get all this cool stuff now I just have to wait for newer games and patches” but no I CANT EVEN LOOK at the cool stuff………..can you please just tell us how much longer SONY geesh everyone WHO DIDN’T get it is waiting……
very few machines have been affected its not a massive issue hell ms patches take down thousand of machines . its upto developers to allow trophys and soundtracks now sony just make it possible developer have the option to opt in or out of these things
I got the update V2.40 and it has been working ok. But some times my PS3 Freezes When I’m playing Call of Duty 4. I dont know if it’s because of the update or if it’s my PS3.

ive read a lot of comments here and im saying as a girl who plays videogames and right now im playing GH3 i got so mad at the damned update! when i went online to play GH3 it had lags while playing the song and sounds and that didnt happen before the update :l
i seriously hope the new firmware is out soon :l
also i dont want to format my HD cuz i would loose my GH3 downloaded songs like the Muse pack and all :l =(

I have an issue with the Internet search, when I enter my search, the next page asks me to sign into my google account. Why? It’s not searching for me. Is there anything that can be done about this. Got myself up to level 2, got all the trophies in the primary part of Super Stardust, got to work on the expansion trophies now. Those are tough.

@1309 Sony cant just make it universal due to MS having the patent on the way that is done in a gaming system. Thats why Sony patched it the way they did to allow devs to put it in if they choose to.

Where is proof to justify this?
Well 2.4 firmware problems seems to me to be either corruption of the firmware while downloading or because of the re-downloading from error leaving corrupted files on the hard drive.
The true answer is I don’t know nor do I care much to know. I updated my ps3 at 3:55 PM from a site that had the 2.4 firmware update.
People wanting to update their ps3 here it is just follow the usb update method and you are good to go *old taco bell hand sign*. (PS… I am not responsible for any problems you get if you brick your system)

Just some quick points about what is being spread about by some ill informed posters.
Yes IW, and Insomniac are not going back and patching there existing games right now, it is b/c however they are working on other projects right now. Insomniac has already confirmed that Resistance 2 will have trophy’s and IW, contrary to what some others were saying, said they would have loved for this technology to have been in place when they were working on COD4 and will definitely use it in future products. Basically no developer is going to simply write off trophy’s and Microsoft can not tell a developer what they can and can’t do on another console. There are plenty of developers who will incorporate trophys from here on out, but a lot will not want to patch their old games right now, specifically b/c we are on the verge of the holiday crunch. I’m sure once the big games are out this fall, that we’ll see more developers go back and add trophys.
I’m relatively certain from everything I read that a) the people effected by this is relatively few, and b) the problem is really not all that major. This is not a hardware issue, the PS3 is not becoming completely inoperable, it’s experiencing software failure, and even though it sux and you may lose some data, there is a simple fix that just about anyone can do.
I’m sure Sony will have the update back up in no time (certainly before E3 which is only a week away and they’ll want to talk about how much of a success trophy’s are and where they are going from here) and we’ll all start enjoying SSDHD (I’ve never played but I’m probably going to buy just to check out the trophy’s system, I’m kinda sad that R&C and the Orange Box probably won’t get em until the end of the year :( but once they do I’ll be replaying them all over again) I’m really looking forward to Home this fall, and moreover I can’t wait to see what Sony’s going to do for us next.
One last thought to all the Xbox 360 fanboys who have been coming on here talking about how MS is preferred by the consumers b/c of Live and blah, I have a little piece of info for you. While it’s true that there are more Xbox’s in homes than PS3’s, it’s almost entirely due to the year difference in launch. This time last year MS announced they had reached the 10M mark, since then they have been outsold by the PS3. The PS3 has consistently outsold the Xbox for the last 6 months, and in the last 3 it’s downright kicked it’s ass. Most financial experts believe that by 2010 Sony will have far surpassed the Xbox and that MS may not continue the brand, or will be outsourcing the technology (basically making it just another PC, only 1 that does less)
Sorry to get so far off topic, but after reading all the comments about Sony doesn’t know… I got annoyed. While these things were true early in the lifecycle, it’s pretty much known throughout the industry that Since last year’s E3 Sony has done an absolutely amazing job of completely turning the brand image around.
@1317 I agree with you man. Sony works very hard to try to give us the thigns we ask for. I for one look forward to the upcoming trophy support. Im a little bummed about IW and Insomniac but definitely since Insomniac is working very hard on R2 i can definitely understand their position. I for one will give sony time and enjoy playing games on my PS3. They will be constantly looking at what we want and be trying to implement that. mark my words the PS3 will overtake the 360 in the near future.
But we still wont have in game music for all games. which makes me a sad panda

Yeah it’s unfortunate that there are so many people in this forum who don’t understand that these things take time. I’m much happier w/ my console that I know was built future proof, and have to wait for individual features to be added, than have a console that was state of the art for maybe the first minute of it’s existence and have a more robust online, but also be prone to bricking if I was so daring as to expect to play the latest game that just came out. I mean what are we Veruca Salt, I want it NOW daddy!!!! Come on let’s act like adults, let’s be supportive of our choice of console, and let’s give the guys a break for working so hard to give us the best gaming experience available. I’m sure noone is more upset about this than they are. They put 100s of hours of their lives into this and they want nothing more than for it to be perfect.
I really needed something to listen too. I know they wont have music patches for COD4. But if they have them for pixel junk monsters then who knows..

I am glad to see that some people are being mature about this issue and sad to see how many are not. Over half of you people don’t have a clue what it takes to develop and things should come out instantly with no problems. Some think that Sony rushed this because this shouldn’t happen. I must have missed the part where Sony had tested this firmware on every single PS3 to know that this problem was not going to happen. I am sorry to be rude, but I am completely sick of listening to people complain about not having this or not having that, and hurry and get this, and when they get what they want adn there are slight glitches then now they complain about that.
Give these guys a break. An issue/bug was found and they are doing something about it. They are being very pro-active about it. Mine worked fine, others as well, as some did not. Everything that is software/hardware there will always be updates, and some updates have bugs, it’s not just Sony it’s everyone, that is WHY THEY HAVE UPDATES! 85% of all updates always have this:

These guys did not rush 2.4, there were unexpected bugs. If they were going to rush it, it would have been out last month when it was planned. We know that Sony does not rush things, for example HOME. They want to get it right…..Sony listens to you, me and everyone else in the blogs, forums, GAP, etc etc, this is why we are starting to get the majority is wanting.

2.40 works fine for me except now while playing tf2 online, my bluetooth makes me lag horribly. it works fine when im not using it….. idk. also, when can we get new avatars or an option to create them via pics?

I’m one of the poor people that had the PS3 freeze up after the download was completed. If anyone knows of a fix that will be coming out to reverse this please let me know. I will be sending my system back in with proof of purchase on Tuesday 7/8.

Just so you know Sony was involved in a lawsuit at launch that prevented them from being able to use the rumble functionality. That lawsuit was settled about a year ago, and low and behold, they put the dualshock 3 out.
@1327 I actually bought 2 DS3 controllers even though I had 2 Sixaxis controllers. I for one ddint mind buying them either because my left analog sticks kept sticking by the time I bought the Ds3s. Ive used those more now and havent had that issue with the analog sticks yet. I for one like the new controllers definitely better quality than the old ones. Also at the time I got my PS3 Toys R us had a deal that you would get a free second controller. Bought my 60gb last nov from them.

According to a lot of different sources you can remove the hard drive and reformat using a pc, insert it back and voila it should be fixed.
However you will lose all your save info, of course you will if you send it back to Sony as well, but you don’t have to wait for them to fix it.

Some tiny changes-adds to include in 2.41 or something
– Consider adding a function that will let us organize our friend list in groups… it’s very very important thing when you have many friends (100 max) and especially now that we have in game XMB!! We have from different forums, countries etc… We want to organise our friendlist!!! Its not so difficult to add this function (aka add a group,move to group, delete group etc…)
– With 2.40 many will start to communicate with messages in game we need a function to delete multiple messages from our inbox… We need that function too! Its not that difficult too for the programmers.
We need all that stuff… Bring back 2.40 as soon as possible, and check this stuff I just added. Many users asks for that… You guys rock! Thanx for all your effort!!!

My story in a nut shell. Wanted to play COD4. Read message about 2.4 download. Went out of game and downloaded. That worked. Went to upload. That worked. System shutdown properly but when it started back up the what I like to call the Mystic Wave Screen came up the the music started and that screen frooze with the wave still moving. Waited…went and restarted same thing. Call for support. Had to do a reset. Did that… screen went black and was told to send in.
Just an FYI to anyone else that had or has a problem like mine.
Oh I also think Sony does a Great job.

Installed 2.4 with no problem. When I try to play with my ps3 games, I have random black screen at the start of the game and I need to use the switch to reset my ps3.
