As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.
We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

Its perfectly safe to download 2.4 from neogaf.com and install it with a USB stick. I doubt anyone with a bricked / strange behaving PS3, updated from USB. Most likely directly from the net.

Come on are you guys serious? “Where was the testing?” *sniffle* Have either of you ever worked in the software field? You can test till you are blue in the face but it is impossible to ever envision EVERY scenario. Considering the extremely small minority of people reporting problems I think Sony did a pretty good job and responded well by pulling the download to double check. Cut them some slack.

Well I for one am glad this possible error was found and will be addressed. Trophies aren’t that important to me. I just want to enjoy the games. I’m more interested in Home and being able to play my own music. Another feature I think would be great is Snapshots. Power DVD lets you take picture of paused movies. I think that would be cool. Also how about using the icon feature on Blu Ray and DVD to make mini clips of your favorite films and games.
Best of luck in fixing this ASAP Sony, I know it must have frustrated you as much, if not, more than the customers.

Too Slow? The PS3 isnt even two years old yet. Would you have rather they rushed every single update they have given us and made all of our Ps3 broken or would you rather have them take time to develop these things and do the best they can. I have 2.4 and it works fine. I know it doesnt for everyone and its good that Sony took it off to see whats going on before more people have problems. But complaining about what a lot of you feel should have been there from the start doesnt change the fact that it wasnt. No amount of crying is going to change that fact either. Why are so many of you so impatient? Do any of you actually use your PS3 to play games or do you just sit there and complain about what it doesnt have based on what the xbox has? If your so unhappy with the PS3 and the way things are going then sell it.

Dude how many months it took Sony to work on this update? And everybody had been waiting for it. Its like some kinda joke. Post it up and put it back in the very same day. Sony the great has been failing to update even itself. I see some of the guys talking about being nice on the comments. Why should we be nice? Everybody paid a good amount of money for their ps3 and bought an HDTV for it. And have been payin for the games and yet we can’t get a decent service? Nah man Sony doesn’t need pity, u guys who are defending Sony needs pity. Yeah everything that Sony brings is great, new dimensions, next-gen games and all but come on still no subtitle support for DivX ( As claimed ps3 was gonna be a media HQ) no decent update. Either we have great expectations or Sony has some weird employees… Btw i was trying to download the 2.40 update but failed thnx God or i was gonna update my ps3 too. Then it would be bricked or have all kinds of problems which those guys have been experiencing and then i wouldn’t even be this nice in my comment at all :D

I have a question for Eric and i’m sure that most people would want this answered.
In the video for In-Game XMB, it was fast on your system. But when I bring it up it’s quite laggy and the icons seem to load slower than what it showed in the video.
Do you have a different PS3 model there than what they sell in stores?
I’m not complaining because I love the new features, and I know that this is just the groundwork or 1st step for the future.
Just wondering why your XMB was so fast when it seems like most people I know is slower.

I think Eric was using the amazing 2.40 Ultimate edition. The one that includes In-game Music and it is faster.
