Firmware v2.40 status

2,454 0

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

  • sleepyf1 oddly enough we aren’t the key market of ps3 check the news lately people that are goofball old like 45+ are. Well we may be the target but from looks of it looks like much older people are buying the system and playing

  • I got an “older” 60 gig. model updated with firmware 2.40 and mine works great. Just sayin mine works GREAT.

  • Everything works on my unit (In Game XMB) but I can’t play any of music that’s saved on my HD on any of my Games? Any idea?

  • 1. IS the ps Store still being updated today?

    2. Is qore coming out today

    3. Keep working sony we believe in you

  • @ 592

Oh saying that no one on here cares that you are threatening to switch to the 360, is now having a poor attitude anyone who ‘expresses displeasure’ against Sony?

Seriously, if you want to go get a 360, DO IT, dont come on here and ‘threaten’ to, you are one out of hundreds and hundreds of thousands, so no one cares. Sony should care, but majority of the people are not doing that, they are doing the opposite.

Dont come on here and make a threat to switch, just go and do so no one is stopping you at all.

All I am saying is you ‘threatening’ to buy a 360, just shows how ignorant you really are, having to make a threat, just to wait and see if anyone convinces you to stay, or replies? Just go for it, you are alone.

  • @ 598

lol ok you are probably right. Well lets hope we are considered one of the important ones.

  • @ 594

I said you will be missing out, because he stated he will switch completely, in favor of 360 over PS3, and therefore he will be missing out if he ‘switches,’ as he said.

Honestly everyone is complaining about nothing here, unless their systems bricked, but that is the unfortunate minority. What are you complaining about, really?

  • @ Sentry (596)

Well, I’m glad you give Sony a passing grade with a blindfold on.

First off, there is a VERY MISLEADING video, STILL posted on how “In-Game Music” would work. Which doesn’t work, for any game right now mind you, not even the game they showcased it working on… wtf ?

Second, it’s obvious that this firmware has bricked more than a few PS3’s. Sony’s not going to take down a global firmware on the fear that 3 people had problems updating. This is obviously a large problem, no matter how much Sony wants to downplay it.

Thirdly. The so-called “Trophies” are not going to be supported by previous titles… hell, even current titles that are being release aren’t going to support them. Infinity Ward said they’re not patching CoD4 and 2K said they’re not patching Civilization:Revolution. And Bryan Intihar has said that they are not patching Resistance 1 or Ratchet and Clank. So, we don’t even have universal Trophy support. Why ? Because Sony is afraid to push their 3rd parties (2nd and 1st parties too ?). Why ? Because Sony knows they’re only hanging on by a thread, and most likely for our sakes, not for Sony’s. Rock Band delayed for the PS3, that’s awesome !

No real In-Game music, just a different implementation of what we already have.

So nothing to complain about ? I highly doubt it. Or are you just upset that it isn’t gamesblow that you can single out ?

  • For those complaining:

If Sony would’nt have taken off the update, then Sony would be dumbasses. They’re trying to fix this, this is an issue. But at least they do something immidiate… they don’t deny the problem for almost a year and then extend their warranty to 3 years. *wink wink*

Those who want to buy from rivals, go ahead, you’re a minority of another minority. I don’t know the % of people who had problems with 2.4, but you are another small % of that % … 5% of 5% is not alot.

Flame me all you want, but if you think fixing this is so easy, why don’t you send your own magical FW to Sony?

  • @594

To me, a bricked PS3, is just as serious as RROD. Both need to be sent back.

I used to bash on Microsoft for such an issue.

  • its a shame. But everything is A’OK with me. lol. WooooOOT!

  • happy i got it and my ps3 didn’t get bricked at all.

  • @605

    completely agree

FFS come on sony please tell us why you arent including ingame music universally

pleaaase release an offical statement dont just leave us here..

  • @ Gothdom (606)

I’m just curious if Sony is going to repair any “bricked” console that is out of warranty for free or charge the $150.00 service fee. If they fix it for free, then that’s straight up of them, if they charge, then that 3 year extended warranty looks pretty good right now.

LOL at the “magical” firmware comment. Anyone who is anyone knows that custom firmware for the PSP is dominating the standard firmware. So much so, that it calls into question the staying power of the PSP (if people just pirate everything). And piracy is pretty big on the PSP right now. If and when a custom firmware hits the PS3, you can expect to see the same, better firmware than Sony produces.

  • I install 2.4 and its works fine. Now with so many people saying that their PS3 has become a brick. I’m a little hesitant to power on my system until there’s a solution. I’d hate for my PS3 to brick.

  • @ 610

MS has a patent. ( this has been posted many times)

  • @613

that is speculation, sony has not said this, and i find it hard to belive that you can patent something like that there has to be way around it.

  • @ PhoenixBlack (610)

Show me this holy grail of patents. Or do you just regurgitate everything you read ?

  • CAUSE OF PROBLEM = CUSTOM THEMES!

Certain custom themes are the cause of the PS3 loading to just the waving line!

2.40 adds new icons to the xmb, certain custom themes are causing some kind of curruption.

Chances are if you encountered the waving line with no icons when updating you were using one of these custom themes.

  • Sorry, double post, I meant comment 613, not 610. Grrrr for no “Edit Post” >.<

  • come on .. get GTA IV patched…,

  • “ITS SONY DELAYIYING CRAP AGAIN……OFCOURSE

SONY…….YOU NEED TO MAKE THINGS RIGT BEFORE REALESINF THEM”

Now that’s the funniest thing I’ve ever read. First you say it’s Sony delaying crap again. Then you say Sony needs to get it right before they release it. Make up your mind.

  • @583
I had crashes in online play in GTA4 too. Didn’t have it in the evening / night anymore. But we all know GTA4 is a little bit strange sometimes ;-)

But really, to people telling to switch to 360 because of this. MS had their fair share of problems with updates too. Just you should know.

  • IncredibleDrunk

I updated and it works just fine on my 60GB PS3!

  • @ 616.

Nope, no custome themes. No history of isses, with the exception of Assassins creed freezing before they released the patch.

Even GTA4 didnt freeze for me.

The only thing I can think of was that MGS4 was sitting in my PS3 at the time.

  • tell me peole.. how come 360 can play custom tracks and ps3 cant for GTA IV??

  • I don’t have any problems :3
Thank god I gots me the best ps3 version, 60GB!

Well this’ll be resolved in due time, it’s ok.
As long as MANY games do get these trophies I’m happy.

  • MS has a patent.. if you want the link i can post it (directly to the official site of the united states patent office)

its slightly amusing to me that no one has else has tried to hunt this patent down to see if its the real deal, especially considering how easy it was for me to do so

  • Yo y my music not play with none of my games and it not playing with pixel junk monsters

  • guys guys guys , what is this stuff about ‘corporate attack’ ?
no way man , the good folks at SCEA updated big time the PS3 OS , is natural that some problem arise ,maybe a obscure game doesnt use the SDK API’s on the right way and now it makes conflict.
I was expecting this kind of issue , its natural :D .
again. im a game developer ,i ve worked with non PC platforms and i know a little of this crazy talk.
But man, this is good news theyre fixing the mistakes of SCEI!

  • @ 624

not many games will have it becuase devs wont want to include them :(

we will get like a 1:7 ratio of games coming out with trophies

  • and mine was a 60gig model that bricked!

  • And there is a way around it.. its by giving the devs tools to do the job themselves

  • @ Mike 605

Please first let me know if your a mind stuck on your ideas, if so I have no points in arguing with you if you dont have an open mind.

FIRSTLY, the in-game music is only usable if games are patched for it, yes, we all know that. If you watched the video and listened carefully (also the video was from mid June or so), he clearly states that this is still a concept, and this may not be how it ends up in the end, but it is what they are planning.

SO OBVIOUSLY in-game music was working across majority games (like in-game XMB), but they removed that for the final version, why is this? I believe it has to do with patents, and some developers not wanting compatibility for the feature, but thats just me, what is your explanation? Games could easily be patched and we will see massive patches in the next month or so, you’ll see.

  • Well, I suppose I’ll hold-off on trying to get trophies in Super Stardust HD for a while until the update is back.

I was playing MGO last night and was trying to pull up the XMB to look at a message I had just received, and it wasn’t doing it – just taking me to the old black screen with the quit game, turn off controller, turn off system, options. I was pretty confused. This makes a lot of sense now. I hope the system gets reestablished quickly – at least sometime this afternoon!

  • no problems from the people who have it installed?

Umm u have a 40gig uk ps3, 2.40 came down and installed fine, but have noticed problems that is annoying.

    1) My ps3 is now stuttering in games, e.g Burnout Paradise, COD4 and GTA IV.

    2) My internet browser now doesnt work

    3) My ps3 keeps dropping connection to psn (and its not my internet or router, checked them fine)

    4) Cant seem to watch streamed videos anymore, keeps stopping and stuttering (back to the ps3 dropping connection maybe).

So i really hope that when sony fix the update, it will be available to the ones that have 2.40 already, as mines a bit screwy. Good work tho sony, hope everything gets fixed soon

  • Damnit it only posted half of my post, wtf?

    Not letting me post anymore…

  • @ 605
“First off, there is a VERY MISLEADING video, STILL posted on how “In-Game Music” would work. Which doesn’t work, for any game right now mind you, not even the game they showcased it working on… wtf ?” They stated they had a special build for them to show it off. They also said games need updates for this feature (we all know why). You missed those parts in the video?

“This is obviously a large problem, no matter how much Sony wants to downplay it.”
I missed the part where they were downplaying it… got a link? They have complaints. Most people mail them with complaints, not with congrats. So if they get like a 100 – its enough for them to take it down. Don’t you consider that action as good and supportive?

“The so-called “Trophies” are not going to be supported by previous titles… hell, even current titles that are being release aren’t going to support them.”
There WILL be patches for older games, as stated in the video. Its up to the devs wheter they want to do this. Sony cannot and will not force them.

“Infinity Ward said they’re not patching CoD4 and 2K said they’re not patching Civilization:Revolution.”
Whats your point again? Its up to the devs. Go complain at their door.

“And Bryan Intihar has said that they are not patching Resistance 1 or Ratchet and Clank. So, we don’t even have universal Trophy support. Why ?”
We HAVE universal support, its for the devs to build it in. Not all titles will offer it. Ask them why.

“Because Sony is afraid to push their 3rd parties (2nd and 1st parties too ?). Why ?”
Why would they be afraid? They made a contract with a dev for a game thats already out. They cannot force anything like this on them. Isn’t this completely normal?

“Because Sony knows they’re only hanging on by a thread, and most likely for our sakes, not for Sony’s.”
    What thread? Whats our sake?

“Rock Band delayed for the PS3, that’s awesome !”
Who cares? You can buy it on the 360 and then go RROD. It all makes no sense.

“No real In-Game music, just a different implementation of what we already have.”
It is real, and we didn’t have it yet. This is what Sony offers you. If you don’t like it, you can leave it. Makes no difference. If you leave a console for in-game music and trophies and would rather pay for online play, thats totally up to you.

  • @622

Hmmm, I said that because everyone I know who bricked said they were running a custom theme. The reason reformating the HDD works supposedly is because the PS3 loads up again with the default theme.

Guess there may be other reasons behind it though. Sorry to hear about your PS3.

  • I Kinda a think its because of a theme….

  • @624 Scarecrow
You know ,the 60GB is NOT the best PS3 SKU.

  • @ 628
Its very easy to push a dev to offer trophies and in-game music in their future product: don’t buy it unless it has it.

Don’t defend devs for not putting it in future titles because its to much work for them: they need to deliver a prestine product or else they don’t deserve your money anyway.

  • From what I heard the update servers were hacked at a certain point in the day and given a virus. Everyone who downloaded the update after a certain point either got their PS3 bricked or lost valuable credit card information to the hackers, or just updated it without problems. BUT DONT HOLD ME TO WHAT I WROTE THIS IS JUST WHAT I READ.

  • These are the two relevant patent numbers (IMO the second one is the one thats causing sony problems)

go to the patent office website (uspto.gov), do a quick search, and then enter in one of the numbers.. if this doesnt work ill get the direct link (the link is really long so i thought this method would work out better)

    6,878,067
    7,303,476

  • @639

Of course they aren’t, the newest SKU’s are always the best.

  • i wish i could help sony with dat
but of course that they have the best doing this

i bet that with no time they’ll pull 2.40 back
my 2.4 works fine, and i think that the problem may be custom themes, s.o’s and stuff…

    I B3LIEVE in sony
    =)

  • @641
    I doubt all of that…

  • @642
I’m sure that sony already knew Microsoft had a patent on ingame music, well at least I did but, i’m sure they are at least paying Microsoft for the use of ingame music per download, and if sony had no idea I am sure Microsoft will have no problem suing them :X

  • I love you guys, Got a 60gb and have only turned it off like 4 times in the past year, updated and 11 SSDHD trophies so far :D

I swear one day I’ll work for you(Sony), College is fun so far ^_^

Some features may not be in yet, but every update makes it better!

    Go Sony~!
