MGS4/MGO Beta – Questions Answered!

477 1

Hi all! Our Metal Gear posts are attracting so much attention that we’re popping back in ahead of schedule to answer some of your questions off the regular Metal Gear Mondays schedule.

To start, we have been getting reports that some of you are receiving partial digit UPVC’s Metal Gear Online Beta on the “Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2″ DVD inserts. We are aware of this issue and are working hard to remedy. If you’ve been affected by this issue, please contact us at http://www.konami-data.com/support/. Please be sure to include your partial code, and any other pertinent details (like a return email address, etc). We thank you for your patience.

Second, as some of you may have noticed, the download of the MGO Beta client is now available. Carefully following the instructions you received with your UPVC, you can go grab it. Once it’s downloaded and installed, and you hit the main menu, you’ll notice to proceed you need to sign in your PSN account. Once you’ve done that, you’ll see that there is an update that must be downloaded and installed. From there, the next menu is where you can sign up for your Konami ID/Game ID, which are required to play Metal Gear Online. You can also sign up for a Konami ID/Game ID at http://id.konami.net at any time using a web browser on a PC as well. Once you have signed up for your Konami ID/Game ID, and input it into MGO on your PS3, you can select the option to save the login and password and just login directly in the future without having to input it again.

Following that, until gameplay begins on the 21st, you will just receive an error if you try to sign in to play MGO right now.

As mentioned in the previous posts about Metal Gear Online and Konami ID, the Konami ID/Game ID will be used to offer community and other features with Metal Gear Online, similar to some other popular multiplayer online game web communities, except in this case the web community is directly integrated into the game client which allows for some special functionality. As you use Metal Gear Online, you will see how the PS3 web browser is seamlessly integrated into the experience, and then of course, you can go and access the community when you are away from your PS3 as well, using a web browser on a PC. We’ll reveal more about the community features of MGO at a later date.

Now we’ll just dive directly into some of your questions previous posts:

I_Love_New_York asked: Can we play this game locally once it is downloaded or is it only played through online?

@I Love New York: You must sign in to play Metal Gear Online. There is no local play option.

darkiewonder asked: Any of the Konami folks will be playing in the BETA as well?

@darkiewonder: We sure will!!! We may try to arrange some matches with you all or something like that… Stay tuned!

Sheen asked: Upon downloading the Beta on the 17th, what can the player do? Would I be able to tool around the character creation settings and all that before I play? I’d like to do that beforehand.

@Sheen: Thanks! You can set up a Konami ID/Game ID through the MGO client/PS3, or can do so right now at http://id.konami.net, otherwise character creation and of course gameplay will not be available until the 21st.

bobamuknunbabo asked: When will you take pre-orders for the Gunmetal Grey MGS4 PS3 Bundle? Where would you be able to do so? Konami America?

@bobamuknunbabo, and everyone else who has been asking: We really appreciate your excitement about the gun-metal grey “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” Limited Edition PLAYSTATION 3 Hardware Bundle. We will be revealing more information about this very soon, please stay tuned!

lawman3092 asked: Is there any mic support in the beta or in the starter pack coming with MGS4?

@lawman3092: Absolutely! Mics are supported by MGO!

Thanks everyone! See you Monday!

  • well i used safari it had no problems.

  • Finally worked! Well Konami, you’re safe… for now.

  • if your trying to konami id/game id, using firefox is faster its free and fast. google “firefox download”, download it install it on your pc get id delete firefox.

  • Why would anyone in their right mind delete Firefox?

  • OK! Now we’re good. At first, they didn’t send a confirmation email, and when I logged in and clicked the Resend button, it kept getting the same error page we’ve all been getting. After using revolving windows again, I got a resend confirmation page, and the email was sent immediately afterward.

    Keep trying, faithful Snakes…

A tidbit, for those who never saw it’s face to the world, yet (I’d say there are spoilers [and there are], but if you’re here, you likely already know the story thus far):

  • Seems like things are starting to work and just in time.I finally got my Konami ID…….after 30+ tries. If it gives you some error message keep trying and eventually it will work, good job Konami at least things are working now.

  • I finally got my ID and all…

  • I sent my email to the Konami support site, regarding MGO incomplete code voucher. I’ll be waiting for a response. Hopefully soon.

  • Is it bad if i can’t get the e-mail? I’ve hit the resend button about 10 times and still haven’t gotton it. my e-mail is a hot mail address if that makes a difference.

  • i tried for four days to get my game id and just got it tonite 10:32pm game on tips load 4 screens and run them at the same time worked for me (good luck)

  • I finally got my konami ID and Game Id… but seriously you guys, you really made this as hard as you could. Please fix it.

  • anyone still facing problems do check this guide for mgo beta made by a friend of mine:

    http://nextgen.ws/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=784

  • Is the gun metal PS3 an 80 gig or a 40 gig?

  • Done it!

    Keep trying peeps.

  • @ Razgoull

Thanks for the technique dude. :) The site wouldn’t work using Firefox but I used your technique while using Safari and it worked like a charm. I made it to confirm registration page… thnx again, you Rock! :)

  • STILL!!! :-/ can’t do the id bit!!!!!!!!
This is stupid!!! Been trying for 2 days???
WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO FIX IT Konami??? This is the one game i really wanted to play :-( +I’m not going to try all these things just to try and get my id???
Er i should get it the normal easy way! I give up!!!

  • After trying for several days on IE7, I just made a successful registration using… Firefox. :s

Possibly some session / cookie / certificate handling errors on the part of IE (or bad coding from KONAMI) causing some of the problems?

Can’t see MGO working very well tomorrow, to be honest. I’ve stocked up on other Metal Gear games to help fill the void just in case. ;)

  • I’ve tried around 50 times to get a Konami ID now, at various times of the day and night, using 3 different browsers. And i still havent been able to get one.

The patch took an age to download.

The trailer in the Beta doesnt look like its going to be anything special anyway.

I love MGS, but i have deleted this waste of time from my HDD and cancelled my pre-order for MGS 4. After all this, how can anyone expect the online to run smoothly if they can’t even run a sign-up properly. A debacle of the highest order.

    GOODBYE MGS!

  • Is there anyone else to contact regarding the 9 digit beta keys? I went out and pre-ordered so I could get this beta and I have been emailing konami but it has been 3 days and no answer.

Im a little annoyed I would like to get a new key and I have been patient but I did put money down for this and Id like to get my 12 digit code.

  • EIGHT MINUTES TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Till Midnight in Japan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • FINALLY got the e-mail using firefox but now i cant get the link on the e-mail to work! guess i’ll try later.

  • im soo happy its all starting to work! ok so i love metal gear but dont have a ps3 yet so i want to see a bunch of gameplay vids…. a BUNCH of em! i dont care about the problems they’re having now cuz its a beta so its meant to find and fix probs like this… THIS GAME WILL ROCK dont worry! youll see me (Slam Chunky) in the game when i get my ps3 and mgs4 and mgo

  • This is the most convoluted sign-up process that I have ever seen.

I still can’t sign up for the Konami ID and(!) Game ID.

First, the site is slower than molasses in January, which by itself is completely ridiculous since they knew perfectly well how much demand there would be for this.

Then, when you try to sign up, it can’t just be simple. No. The Konami ID and Game ID CANNOT be the same. Just for added inconvenience. Just so you know that Konami cares.

Then, when you finally get the info for the TWO ID’s filled in, you click Next and you get

“Due to a period of inactivity, the page has been deleted.
Please click on the below link to return to the top page”

WTF. Why isn’t this fixed by now? It’s rare that somebody says “clusterf***” and it really applies. But this is a colossal clusterf***, no doubt.

The funny thing is, I really don’t play online games. I just haven’t been interested, but I figured I would try this out since I had the preorder for MGS4 and got the code.

It’s great how you guys managed to take something that I had positive and optimistic feelings for and turn it into a CHORE where now I pretty much don’t care and if anything have NEGATIVE feelings about. BEFORE it’s even playable! Wow. Good going.

Everyone involved in this from Konami to Sony should be ashamed of themselves for the execution of this beta. Really, for shame, guys. Shame on you.

  • I see a couple of people saying “oh I’m a Mgs fan but I won’t be playing this game because of the site”.

Lets get one thing straight if your worried about a site then no your not an Mgs fan (don’t see how some site problems can stop you from getting excited for this game).

For everyone whos signed up, I’ll be seeing you on the battlefield!

    Psn: Eclipze_
Game ID: eclipse_dc (yea boii I’m back). ^_^

  • @ 225
    Try this: http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=926596&topic=42639477

Use ‘Method 2’ and it worked for both my brother and I.
Anyone else having problems logging should try this too.

  • you people think this is supposed to be a demo. it’s not. it’s a beta. it is supposed to be inconvenient.

  • and how can any mgs fan shun the franchise and its last chapter for a simple inconvenience of a part of the game that isn’t even the real part of the story and the real reason any real fan is a fan of the series. a real fan would not even blink at the thought of not having an online portion to this game. i for one would be happy if mgo ended up not ever working. i’m in it for mgs4 and the single player. the online part is the cherry on top of an already delicious cake with plenty of frosting on it. it’s not even the icing.

  • omg the Gameplay part of the beta starts tomorrow and i still can’t make a damn id! its been a week since we were able to start making IDs, how come this error situation isn’t fixed yet?

  • “and how can any mgs fan shun the franchise and its last chapter for a simple inconvenience of a part of the game that isn’t even the real part of the story and the real reason any real fan is a fan of the series. a real fan would not even blink at the thought of not having an online portion to this game. i for one would be happy if mgo ended up not ever working. i’m in it for mgs4 and the single player. the online part is the cherry on top of an already delicious cake with plenty of frosting on it. it’s not even the icing.”

A real fan would like anything added to the game, Mgs4 plus a great online is a good thing to me. I remember how it felt to play online with the people in the first MGO, it was perfect.

Mgs4 AND Mgo are both what I want, I don’t want one or the other. People who played the old Mgo can probably see why I like this game so much. I really don’t see how website problems (NOT GAME PROBLEMS) can cause people to say their not gunna go online with this game. I think people are just too easily pushed away by the first sign of a problem, even when the problem is not directly connected with the game.

  • these things take time. again, it’s a beta, not a guarantee. no one should be surprised if they can’t play well after the beginning of the beta. it’s a stress test. these things are set up to test things going wrong before the actual thing is released. they could very easily not have a beta and release the actual thing all buggy. be thankful that they are proactive enough to ensure that the actual product is as problem free as possible.

  • of course i agree that a fan will eat up all things related to the original material. i loved mgo subsistence as well, but that’s only incidental to the love for the series. could they have very easily never made an online portion to this series and would that have taken away from the series? no it wouldn’t have. i don’t see how a real fan could put so much weight on the mgo portion when they only added the online part way after the series had been very well established. i agree that it’s a very fun part of the experience, but if you’re not mostly keen on the single-player portion, i don’t see how you could really say you love mgs.

  • everyone say it with me, “a real fan would buy mgs4 even if it didn’t have mgo this time around.”

  • some people are just dumb ass to leave the whole mgs series just because of a crashed site.

  • I was finally avaible to register, try mozilla firefox instead of IE the website responds better with it. Also be patient because the server is very slow and it takes a couple of seconds to get to the other steps in registration. See you all online.

    Game ID: Radatach
    PSN ID: Krochisy

  • actually, let me fix that: “a real fan wold buy mgs4 even if it didn’t have mgo this time around or if it did but mgo didn’t work.” would there would be disappointment. sure, a little bummer… but nothing drastic.

  • i probly would… but since they mentioned mgo i want it and have wanted it since the idea came up! whats this “a real fan” talk anyways? mgs is the best but mgo is gonna rock by itself and you know it!

  • i agree man. i agree. i’m just a little saddened to see people say they love mgs and then say “goodbye mgs” just because, as other people have said, a crashed site and an iffy beta. mgo will rock. IT’S ALMOST HERE TOO. WOO!

  • Yes your right, the online doesn’t play directly to the single player portion. But I love the single player (I played every single one of them). Although I never said that if they didn’t have the online it would take away from the game. I only said that since they DID it adds to the game.

But still my main point is how can people at the first sign of a problem put down the game like its nothing, don’t really understand that..

Like this guy saying he took off the preorder for Mgs4 and deleted MGO off of his hard drive? And all of that just because of a website lol. People just need to calm down.

  • i just wish we knew exactly the time it was coming. it says right on midnight for the europeans. hopefully it’s the same time worldwide. because if it is, then only 4 more hours!

  • yeah, eclipze, i’m with ya, man. i wasn’t talking directly to what you said. i was just speaking my mind, and probably inspired to just speak my mind indirectly to what everyone’s been saying, including the negative nancies.

  • i donno… ppl are idiots! what do they expect everything to be perfect on the first open beta? they made mgo work before what makes them think they are unable to do it again?
anywho i hope to get a ps3 soon and see you guys there. im pumped to see the crazy things kojima will put into it cuz knowing kojima, he will

  • but, then they did say the 21st specifically. would they say that and release it early under the radar like they did with the download? only time will tell. but, then if the euros will get it as midnight, and it’s not simultaneous worldwide release, then it might be midnight sometime (maybe pacific time?) for US. i will try in 4 hours anyway. can’t wait!

  • i finally suscribe to the konami id, but they tell me that they send me an email saying that i have to accept something, but i never get the email.. what the hell? that happen to someone else?

  • This registration system is horrible. Does it give you a total of ten seconds to get through everything? I finally got to the part to create my name after trying for days. I typed in my name and checked for the name if it’s available and I got the stupid error about it timed out. Come on Konami, you can do better than that. Just dump the registration process and use our PSN accounts. It looks like you can’t create servers to handle such a simple process. This isn’t getting off to a good start. I’m always patient when it comes to things like this so to get me mad means you should just forget it and not bother with this registration process.

Why do we have to register anyway? what’s wrong with using Sony’s accounts?

  • Well I’ve been trying since midnight on the 17th to get a Konami ID, and now I can’t even get past the age page without getting the “Due to a period of inactivity the page has been deleted” error.

I guess Konami doesn’t want my money, because if I can’t register my ID before I go to bed tonight, I’m going to GameStop first thing in the morning and cancelling my preorder.

  • Let it be known that since my last post (159) I still can’t sign up to this damn Konami website. I’ve tried everything and I can’t get passed the first 2 pages. Now I’ve been lucky to be part of over 9 betas (PSP, PS2) and this is the worst beta I’ve been part on. I’m sure the game will be great, but this online mess is wack.

  • nhytfahl – I don’t think you should cancel your order just because of this but I’m really disappointed in Konami over this problem. It isn’t hard to have some servers ready just to register accounts. Did they think only 1000 gamers would want to play the beta? This just makes them look minor league when it comes to online gaming. If they can’t handle this simple process I wonder how MGO will be? They shouldn’t have required that we register an account to begin with. I guess they were so busy getting the game ready someone forgot the registration server can only handle one registration at a time.

  • Oh, and at all of you people who think it’s stupid to ditch the game because of the website problems … it’s not a website problem, it’s a customer service issue.

Not only does the website crap out with all kinds of errors (understandable early on, due to the enormous load), but it hasn’t been fixed for FOUR DAYS, and there’s NO TECH SUPPORT CONTACT INFORMATION. On top of that, Konami has done nothing in the way of offering tips or updates or sitreps of any kind, other than to say (on day 2) that the server load is high. Not even a “We’re sorry this is frustrating to you, please bear with us while we iron it out.”

If I treated my clients like that, I’d be out of business in a week.

I refuse to give my money to a company whose customer service is that bad.

  • It is a beta though. It’s not like you paid for the beta. Konami fell down on the beta for sure. Hopefully they’ll either push the beta back a week or extend the beta a couple weeks so we can get some real playing time.

  • *high fives nhytfahl(post 250)* Even though it finally worked for me, I COMPLETELY agree with what you said. They may have saved their @$$es this time, but they have irreparably damaged their reputation in my eyes.
