Firmware Update (v2.00)

787 1

Hi everyone. Here’s a preview of the next PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (2.00) scheduled to release within the next few days. This update contains features that will allow you to receive news directly from us on everything PlayStation, enhance the way you access and organize your media, and allow you to customize your XMB in new ways.

Here’s a closer look at the new features:

You’ll notice this icon in the Network category of the XMB. This is the Information Board.

informationboardlogo

Once activated, you’ll notice scrolling headlines in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. We’ll be delivering the latest news on new games, PLAYSTATION Store updates, hardware, accessories and lots more through the Information Board. Click on the Information Board icon and you’ll be able to see all of the headlines and click through for more detail. The headlines and associated stories will be updated on a regular basis. You can choose not to display the Information Board, but you never know what you might miss, so I’d recommend keeping it on.

We’ve added a nice enhancement to Remote Play called Remote Start, to use Remote Play locally or from a Wi-Fi hotspot, you needed to make sure that your PS3 was on. With Remote Start this is no longer necessary. As long as your PS3 is in standby mode, you’ll be able to turn your PS3 on remotely via the PSP. You can then use Remote Play to access media on your PS3, and when you’re finished you can put your PS3 back into standby mode.

Another feature we’ve added with this update is the ability to set themes on your PS3. Themes will change the whole look of your XMB; the background, icons, and in some cases sounds on your XMB will completely change. We will be providing themes on PlayStation.com and through the PLAYSTATION Store. Once you have downloaded a theme, under Settings go to Theme Settings, select Theme and then choose a theme to display or install a new theme. We are also providing the ability for you to get creative and make your own original themes.

We’ve also added a new way to organize your photos and music on the PS3 – you can now create custom playlists for all of your music and photos.

Finally, regular readers of this blog may have noticed that I’m using a new avatar. You will see that logo above on your XMB representing the new PLAYSTATION Network category. You’ll find the PLAYSTATION Store and Account Management in this category.

We’ve added several other features in this update. I’ll soon be back with more details with a quick video demo of some of the new features.

As always thanks for all of your support and feedback.

I don’t think the posters here are representative of the PS3 population at all. It is obvious that the vocal negative ones would find the energy to post here, while the contented ones are continuing to enjoy their PS3, oblivious to the comments section in an internet blog post.

  • @699
Just for your info, folder organisation for videos, photos, and even games are now available. Do check the web for more information on how to do this. Surprised? I bet ya.

  • @703
Playlists are not folders, if I want a tree view of say Genre->Artist->Album or any other group more than one folder deep then I’m stuck with folder lists from a DLNA server or a plugged in USB drive. If you’ve got a lot of media then I wouldn’t have thought playlists would be very useful for you. I haven’t had a chance to play with the new playlist functionality, but I did watch the demo video and it appeared not to offer any depth of functionality. Does this extend to games as well? Because at the moment the only game sorting that is available just presents you with a flat structure which looks a real mess when you’ve got more than say 15 items.

  • @704 It extends to games as well. People are organising games into custom folders (“game categories” property, the equivalent of “albums” property).

  • What the hell! You can only make playlists with media that is stored on the PS3 and not on an external device or media that is stored on a network computer!

OK Sony, nice way to drop the ball on this one!

  • I think that those posting here are representative, its representative of those who care about this system and it’s future. My PS3 is the best thing I’ve bought this year. It’s changed the way I manage media in my house, has made music, film and pictures available at the touch of a button, plays great games, links to my PSP so I can access all that media from anywhere, generated hours of fun linking network systems together to get the best out of them. It’s just that anyone who cares about PS3 knows its capable of so much more and silly oversights are stopping it from being absolutely fantastic as opposed to just good. We’re not just [DELETED] because we hate Sony or PS3 it’s just we want this system to really shine and feel like a complete well thought out integrated box, for gamers and media players.

  • Hey Guys..Want in-Game-Access…the answer is simple…buy an Xbox 360

  • Viper… then they’d have to deal with hardware reliability issues and having to pay to play online….. no thanks.

The PS3 features are great as they are, and I’m confident in SCE’s future firmware releases.

It’s gonna be hard to use the Remote Start feature because my “everyday” hotspot is heavily secured to where I won’t be able to use my PSP that way.

I am interested in themes and the playlists. I can finally now upload some of my music files into the PS3.

I do hope this update somehow improves the browser. (Even if “under the hood” and not a major release note)

  • Great…. “we promise there will be in-game XMB etc etc in the next firmware update”… you promise… what?

Ok, i think Sony is no more trustworthy… too bad ;)

  • @Onanie
Take into consideration, that even a lot of the people that like to do research, and post/discuss things about ps3 have not yet been to this site, let alone know what it’s about, Also take into consideration that some of them may have come to the site, and registered or browsed around, but are too damn lazy to post or to go to email to verify registration to post, and then there is those users that while they’re upset about not being able to do this amazing act of music/message while in game, they are in fact too lazy to stop playing to post… I have too many games for my own good, I could really care less for posting on this site… in fact I was almost too lazy to myself tonight… but guess what!!!? here I am… and I sure as hell hope I make a difference for the future, because I’m on the verge of losing a lot of respect for not only this .blog, but for PS in general.
Bottom line, go back in archived posts about FW updates and look at how many people want in game music/messaging, and get back to me on that… it’s been going on since this site launched, and even before then on other sites+threespeach, I would say that each person that posts on here counts for at least 7 that don’t but would have approx. the same things to say as them, same goes for you, and your “Sony is god, they give us stuff for free, stop complaining” I’m sure you count for at least 7 people who have the exact same thing to say as you do… if not more. What I’m getting at is, you take the capita’ of these postings, related to the entire ps3 user base, because yes some of them are still enjoying RnCF:ToD, and CoD4 too much to come post or even give a damn atm, but people like me, who roasted RnCF:ToD “Hardest of Core” skill point and all, and beaten one more time for good measure in less than three days total, are here posting, and 7 people just like me are probably not going to post.

One thing is for sure… Keep watching these two FW threads, and see how many people post angry posts about the FW, compared to the past… I’m willing to bet this one takes the cake, and thensome.

Yea or a psone, or ps2 w/hdd or a pc, or a sega saturn with a usb mod, or an xbox1 or an xbox360… but not a ps3… nope nope nope.

At this point, I’d pay to play online, if Sony would just hire more people that they obviously need atm.

  • “What’s so important with in game xmb for messaging?”

Multiplatform games have certain features inherent to the OS depending on the system. For example devs don’t have to spend time on in game messaging or invites/join friend on the 360 because its already in the system. When developing the PS3 version of games the devs aren’t adding the friend features that were standard on the other system due to the missing functionality in the OS of the PS3. Same with music play lists.

I’m guessing its a tug of war. Sony doesn’t want to loose it’s pool of ram resources and the devs don’t want to either, but somethings gonna have to give.

I have a feeling most of us whiners would be satisfied with a friend interface similar to what is found on RFoM as opposed to “give us xmb access”. As we’ve seen, it can be done just not sure of the performance hit.

Please give us access to only a small set of features in the XMB during gaming. Music and friend lists (message ability and friend status) is about all. I/we are not asking for full XMB features access to pics and vids…

Sony’s open format just isn’t working for us consumers. Take COD4, a great game that showcases what we can get out of the PS3. The problem is with the online portion and friends. I have no way to communicate in game to see who’s doing what from our clan. Sure we could pick up the cell phones, but why should we have to. Back to the example, we spend more time trying to create parties and search from games than playing. And that’s if we can even connect. What would it have hurt to get even text messaging in game like Rainbow Six has. I realize this is the devs fault but Sony has the open standards. But each game has a different feature set for its online component. Set some standards, again using RFoM Friends features at a minimum, as many would agree is a great FPS/online/multiplayer benchmark.

  • There are a lot of posts here complaining about people who are being negative about this update. I think the crux of the matter is that despite Sony saying it’s listening to it’s fans, it obviously isn’t. It’s tough when you shelled out a lot of money on the product and your views and those of many other PS3 owners are not being addressed. The 2.0 update is great, its got all sorts useful features which move the functionality forward just a little bit. However it hasn’t done anything for a number of major features which people have been asking for from the get go. It’s that which is troubling. Sony say they are listening, but what are they listening too? If they are listening why are they scared to tell us if these items will ever be addressed. They must get fed up of being flamed every time a firmware update comes out as it does nothing to inspire confidence in their product or their ability to support it.

  • Wow, look at the number of complaints. Okay, I also am a little disapointed that my own fav pet peev hasn’t been dealt with this time round. However, have you noticed that, by small increments, the PS3 is getting those improvements. Here’s a thought you might take away with you, perhaps some of the things we’re asking for are also down the the games developers. Take chatting to your chums from within a game. Surely that’s down to the software having the option to open a connection to your friend using the address supplied in your buddy list? Well that’s possible, but it’s part of the game software, not Sony’s PS3. What about playing our own tunes in game. Yep, that’s another game developers choice of whether to open up the music library on the machine or from the game software source.

I’d like to be able to play video files silently as the XMB background. I’d like better audio visualisations, perhaps with a degree of playstation Eye involvement. Hec, I’d like to see some of those PlaystationEye software titles work with the older Eye, because I have one of them.

I’m sure many of our wishes are on a priority list somewhere, and I’m hoping that my wishes are at the top, ready for the release of Home.

Now, what sort of post would this be without a whinge. Sony Sony Sony, where is the ability to organise my files in a more useable fashion? The more you make available for download, the more we need to be able to organise. Help us out please! Thanks.

Oh, and where can we get new themes, and when can we download the theme creator? Can’t wait. I like the look of that wintery forest picture.

  • SONY, FIX YOUR DAMN PLAYLIST FEATURE TO ENABLE PLAYLISTS WITH ALL MEDIA!

Jesus, how freakin’ ridiculous is it that I have 120 gigabytes of music on my external drive and I can’t playlist any of it without copying it to the PS3’s tiny little drive. LAME

  • OMG THEMES! That’s just sooo awesome!!!

Who the hell needs in game xmb, in game friends list, in game music, proper video codec support etc when you got THEMES!?

  • Eric, if you’re actually reading this stuff, I would give you at least 20 bucks for an update with in-game xmb and more codec support!!!!! I better everyone else in here would too. So if its a money issue, there ya go. Problem solved. Who else would pay for it?

  • @ #723
If you’ve been paying attention for the last, let’s say, 12 or so weeks, you’d have noticed that the PSStore updates don’t go live until at LEAST 12:00pm EST and they usually go up much later than that.
Patience is a virtue…….one that you don’t have.
    GET IT!!!!

  • Everyone should know by now that the store doesn’t update at 12:01am!!! For me on the East coast its been at like 5pm. So whatever your whining about shut up already. How often does the Wii or 360 get firmware updates? For a system that has a very low defect rate it gets quite a bit of updates just to add some more features…

  • Can you, Sony Guys, Listen to US…customers that are tired of your usefull updates?!? c’mon give to us in-game-access XMB!!!

  • @718

They did enhance file organization to be a bit better. Play around with it and you’ll see. I’ve got all my demo’s in a file and all my DL games in a seperate file now.

  • this FW 2.00 is very very poor

  • So we have a choice between in-game messagine or in-game music according to the GAP MEMBER BLOG.

    Why cant both be done?

  • I fully tried out the update….its great…
Missing ingame XMB alot though :(

But you guys could have implemented playlists for Videos….

Also 3 speed fast forward for Music…

All in all, great update….Just please bring in-game XMB….

  • @ Madness3120

Probably becuz of the very little RAM in the ps3…

  • “You always want what you can’t have and once you get it, you don’t want it anymore.”

I think that old adage will hold true once all you cry babies get your wishes about i-g XMB.

Instead of complaining about SOMETHING THAT WAS NEVER SAID, you could be happy with what you have.

  • What a LAME 2.0 call it 1.9 or whatever but what about in Game Menu?? Hello!!! our own music during games?? R U at least listening? any updates on this?

  • What about sharing video with other PS3 users via ps3 email??

  • Lots of anger in here. Personally I’m satisfied with the PSP/PS3 link up enhancements. In game XMB should definitly be in the next update though.

  • This post is 1 (ONE) day old. And already has 742 comments… 90% of them negative. 90% of those all about the same problem.

Surely Eric, it’s easy to see that there’s something TERRIBLY WRONG with your choices for 2.0 features.

In-game XMB, and particularly in-game messaging has been requested thousands of times by PS3 users.
Gather 10 PS3 users, casual or hardcore. Ask them what they want the most? I did that with 5 users, and 4 of them said: in-game messaging (of course).

No matter how fun this “remote on-off via PSP” is, I wonder how many users really WANTED that? Obviously it’s just pointed at PS3+PSP owners. And even for those, how many of them do you think really want this feature? Once again, using my (small) 5 users base, ONE has a PSP and… really doesn’t give a damn about the feature. He will be rarely using it… if using at all.
News tab? Nice, probably, but what about it? What’s the urgency? How is this a priority?

In your response (500 comments ago) you say you are listening to our saying in order to address the features you are developing…
Sorry Eric, I CANNOT believe this is true.
Clearly the features on this firmware answer commercial and marketing needs (greater PS3 + PSP cross selling, one more marketing channel). Sony’s needs, not user’s needs.

The way you’ve been managing the PS3 first year is almost unbelievable: Releasing flawed games (Lair, Heavenly Sword), insufficient QA and developer support resulting in unfinished/inferior games (Pro Evolution Soccer 2008, every EA game so far, etc.), BC removal, all the exclusives lost (DMC4, GTA4, Gears of War, Bioshock, Katamari Damaci, etc.), uncertain and contraditory pricing strategy.

And how come did we have to wait ONE full year to finally see one of the trusted PS series on the PS3: R&C 4. One entire year without even a clue about Jak & Daxter, God of War, Ico/Shadow of the Collossus, Socom… And constant delays of Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, MGS…

    What is Sony’s strategy?
    IS THERE ONE?!?!?!

Get your priorities straight, Eric. You’re loosing your fanbase loyalty.
I’m certainly loosing my faith on you guys.

  • Extremely disappointed with this update and getting nervous about this great piece of kit. Such potential.
Be bold, and give us divx support before the xbox dashboard update (which will, as extenders now have it). Stop reacting and start setting the trends again. The hardware just calls out quality, so let’s get moving.
Also, don’t wait for Home to give achievements, and don’t be scared to copy good ideas. Some ideas don’t need to be enhanced in the first iteration.

  • WOW an official reads the comments!!!

InGameXMB is not avaible, ok…i can go with that….

    BUT what i can say:

DON´T TAKE THE PISS OUT OF EUROPEAN GAMERS!!!!!!!!!!!

JUST WATCH THE DIFFERENCES IN THE SHOPS or THE RELEASE DATES

    Sooo. WTF!

Since Internet connects the whole world, people recognize the disadvantage of gamers who are not living in the US!

  • To me this is like a slap on the face. Why post this update if it has nothing that we fans wanted (except play lists). I’m starting to think that this “in game XMB” application is not possible on PS3. I mean why wouldn’t they apply it? doesnt make sense. The only other theory I have is that it will eventually be available through HOME service. I believe HOME will replace XMB eventually.

  • For those who haven’t messed around with the new update enough yet, CUSTOM FOLDERS FOR GAMES / VIDEOS ARE IN THIS UPDATE! Do this: Highlight something in your games list, say, Warhawk. Now hit Triangle. Go down to Information. Pick Album. Give the album a name. Now, go back to your games, hit Square twice. Your games will sort into custom folders. You’ll have one folder called Unknown will all of your games, and the one you modified should be in its own folder. Just go through each game with the steps above and you can put them into custom folders. Works the same with videos.

  • I don´t know in which point I began feeling like I was being robed.

The PS3 is an AMAZING machine. Lots and lots of potential. But none of that will matter unless you guys start showing what you can do.

I´ve seen what you can do with the Playstation Eye, the thing like Minority Report.

I mean…CAN YOU SEE HOW AWESOME THAT IS? There should be posters all over the place..videos showing how to do that..

I don´t know if you have those there. I am south america so I only watch the ads from here and other sites.

I think you don´t realize that you are struggling more than ever…and the sad part is that you are fighting against yourselfs.

Cut the mambo-jambo and tell us straight what it is going on.

You are losing what it is important. It´s not the games, it´s not the people itself…but the people who believed in you guys. I bought the PS3 when the thing was only shadows.

Well, guess what? I hope I am happier by the time Christmas hits because otherwise some other person will be using my PS3.

Take it as a nice critic.

PS. Would they take the time to read all the posts? I wonder if they talk about these things in their meetings…showing our thoughts…

If you do..oh man …we are screwed.

Please let the fans know if in-game xmb is part of home or if only certain games can use it.

As for the next update, how about giving users the ability to create folders in the pictures, music, and video sections. Moreover, in those folders, new folders can be created. There doesn’t need to be any further nesting. The psp can handle folders, why can’t the ps3?

Also how about adding an rss channel under the network section of the xmb. The psp has it, why can’t the ps3 have it.

Finally how about adding support for the divx codec and/or the free, public domain, xvid codec.
