Firmware Update (v2.00)

787 1

Hi everyone. Here’s a preview of the next PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (2.00) scheduled to release within the next few days. This update contains features that will allow you to receive news directly from us on everything PlayStation, enhance the way you access and organize your media, and allow you to customize your XMB in new ways.

Here’s a closer look at the new features:

You’ll notice this icon in the Network category of the XMB. This is the Information Board.

informationboardlogo

Once activated, you’ll notice scrolling headlines in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. We’ll be delivering the latest news on new games, PLAYSTATION Store updates, hardware, accessories and lots more through the Information Board. Click on the Information Board icon and you’ll be able to see all of the headlines and click through for more detail. The headlines and associated stories will be updated on a regular basis. You can choose not to display the Information Board, but you never know what you might miss, so I’d recommend keeping it on.

We’ve added a nice enhancement to Remote Play called Remote Start, to use Remote Play locally or from a Wi-Fi hotspot, you needed to make sure that your PS3 was on. With Remote Start this is no longer necessary. As long as your PS3 is in standby mode, you’ll be able to turn your PS3 on remotely via the PSP. You can then use Remote Play to access media on your PS3, and when you’re finished you can put your PS3 back into standby mode.

Another feature we’ve added with this update is the ability to set themes on your PS3. Themes will change the whole look of your XMB; the background, icons, and in some cases sounds on your XMB will completely change. We will be providing themes on PlayStation.com and through the PLAYSTATION Store. Once you have downloaded a theme, under Settings go to Theme Settings, select Theme and then choose a theme to display or install a new theme. We are also providing the ability for you to get creative and make your own original themes.

We’ve also added a new way to organize your photos and music on the PS3 – you can now create custom playlists for all of your music and photos.

Finally, regular readers of this blog may have noticed that I’m using a new avatar. You will see that logo above on your XMB representing the new PLAYSTATION Network category. You’ll find the PLAYSTATION Store and Account Management in this category.

We’ve added several other features in this update. I’ll soon be back with more details with a quick video demo of some of the new features.

As always thanks for all of your support and feedback.

  • I’m sad. Every cool game is delayed for hella long. No In-Game XMB. Home isn’t coming out till ’08… What the heck, Sony?!

  • yeah, pretty sure someone goes through and reads ALL the comments here. whats the point in spamming the blog to death?

  • They finished 2.00 its coming out tomorrow.. I hate you so much, WE ALL HATE SONY FOR THIS. WHY CANT YOU DO IT? WHY CAN THE 360? WHY NOT THE “better console”? Im not going to waste my money on the playstation brand its dying.

  • In game XMB is all we care about.

Sure there are a few people that will connect remotely to their 60GB PS3 to watch videos, listen to music and view pictures (even though their 80GB ipod that is sitting right next to them already has the same media)…

but the masses want in game XMB. Communications among our psn buddies is horrible.

“Wait wait wait, let me exit the game so I can tell my buddy what we are doing in game…I’ll be back in like 10 min. Dont start without me.”

  • i have both and i like both, you loose, also 360 has their problems, you cant copy to the hardrive unless is from cd, and other several propietary things, no to mention the noise that produce the X drive.

  • Regardless of all the morons complaining and this and that about the 2.0 update, I am thankful for the fact that we get these new features to make our system better. I’m excited for this release! Thank you Sony! Keep em’ coming! :)

  • 256mb ram is just not enough

  • Overall,I like the update.Customization is always nice..

Even though you haven’t given us in-game XMB access yet (and everyone writing comments is whining about it),I’m sure it’ll happen eventually.Like I said, cool update!

  • Hi, i think that will be a great update only if you can put this new way to organize your photos and music on psp to …… that can be really good for the rest i go with the family : IN GAME XMB
    Please :)

  • Its not the ram they have 256mb for gaming, and 256mb for the system. And what are they doing? Fags…

  • Hopefully Sony will include cheese in the next update for all this pathetic whining.

  • @ Joel: Stfu already, what are you 10?

Damn, your are such a jackass, and I cant believe because there is no in-game XMB YET (key word), people are saying [DELETED] Sony and they are buying a 360.

Go ahead, buy a 360, thats cool.

But to turn your back on Sony, after being loyal to them? For what? No in-game XMB? I am SURE they are working their asses off to get it in, they know what we want.

I have ONE message for Sony, and one only (Sorry to spam)

TELL US YOUR PLANS ON WHEN IN-GAME XMB WILL COME TO BE, AND WHAT YOU ARE WORKING ON RIGHT NOW.

  • Sony’s idiotic design is the reason we don’t have in game XMB, people. It’s stupid. While Sony allowed us to change the HDD out, they should’ve allowed us to swap out their stupid ass 6 year old standard RAM with some of our own. Smooth move on using outdated CRAP, Sony. 256 mb of ram. My 1st computer had that back in 2000.

  • Hey Sony, what happened to this? This video is by IGN back from 2006, shows a working version of the in-game XMB.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvMy7_pnXjM

  • Congratz Sony…

I don’t care about this ****** update, but you could at least NOT have used the number “2.0”.

Now you have a bunch of people whining about that.

  • Lets all complain about free stuff

    add in game xmb
better ways to organize demos, movies, downloadable games
    more on friends list
    music in games
    and Playstation Cards

hopefully that will shut up these gamers

  • Chill B1ack Mage (#565)

Xbox 360 dashboard updates, demos, and what not are free too. Only thing that costs money is online gaming.

  • No its not about free stuff we paid $600 and we arent getting the best gaming experience, the online is terrible, and they cant do $hit becuase some idiot guy stated that the ps3 is more powerful than the 360(kaz) while in fact its not since not only does it have less ram but it has terrible network.

  • wow, i can see the whole point of this blog is obviously for people to copy and paste a bunch of stupid crap. Hey monitors…delete em!

  • Well….Yeah….I’m not complaining…..just disappointed. It’s free and it’s awesome. Nice job…..I guess…….Let the speculation begin for firmware 3.0!

  • I’m afraid I’m going to have to share my disappointment as well.

Although SCE didn’t promise anything, they certainly should get their priorities straightened.

I mean sure, the new themes are good for people who like to have some variety or just stare at their screen, but this update has very little to no impact for us gamers (you know, the obviously not so important people that brought you millions… no, Billions of dollars over the last 10 years or so).

Also, the “just wait” and “its coming” replies simply don’t cut it anymore. I mean it’s been almost a freakin’ year since you launched in NA and we’re jet to see any major breakthrough in terms of a better overall gaming experience (like the now notorious in-game access to the XMB).

PS: What was the point in creating a new Playstation Network category, if you won’t even move all the stuff there that’s related to PSN (the Friends list in this case).

  • Its stupid really, you guys had in game xmb YOU PROMISED IT WITH THE FINAL PS3. No… your loosing your console war, your failing, nintendo is attacking, and microsoft is better than ever.

  • one thing i know is whanever time music in game is implemented will be alot better thar x360 solution, on 360 you can listen music from hardrive or usb sure, but in case in the ipod take too much time to read it, this will be solved if the xbox can rip music from the ipod, but only rips mucis from a audio cd (.dat), also you cant save playlist from ipod only music stored from HD, i have a 5gb of music a its a pain the way its implement on xbox 360, how muchs cds i need if i want to rip my music on the hd, the ps3 dont have the problem you can rip all the music for many type of media.

this only a example for the people who thinks 360 is all way perfect.

  • PS3 BLOWS ROFL 360 FTW SELLING MINE NOW THAT THERE’S NO IN GAME XMB FOR TEH 1337 360!

  • Just InGame Music and the ability to send and receive Messages… thats all we want…. thats all we want Sony! Oh PLEASE.

And is it possible to respond to these 566 Comments?

  • After an entire year, we still do not have the CORE essentials of communication that we should of had from LAUNCH.

    In-Game Messaging
    Cross-Game Invites

How the Trash are we supposed to COMMUNICATE without these features?

No one should have to leave a game to send a damn text message. I’d rather text my buddy on his cellphone than use my PS3 right now!

SONY GET IT RIGHT, YOU KNOW WHAT WE WANT.

Now it’s your turn to DELIVER THE GOODS!

  • Ps3 will never have in game xmg, because the half of the ram is used for os like linux. so if we would get in game xmb the game will slow down to much or crash. so buy xbox360 if you want in game xmb. i stay with the ps3 FOR NOW

  • To everyone at Sony who directly deals with the Playstation Blog:

Please, please ignore the off-color rants by most people leaving comments. I, too, feel their pain, but at the same time, I realize that screaming via text on a screen isn’t going to motivate you. Take the following points as constructive criticism.

I understand that in-game XMB is difficult to achieve, because of memory constraints. Like others have brought up, though, would there be some way to use available HDD space as virtual memory?

If not, maybe it really is time to rewrite the XMB code so that it takes less memory. To be totally honest, I wouldn’t mind if the XMB was less pretty, if it meant being able to acess it during a game. Even though that would take a lot of work, think of the results – what would people have to bash on then? Comparisons between features on the PS3 and CrapBox360 would virtually disappear.

If nothing else, what could possibly be wrong with giving us a constant flow of information about how the firmware creation process is going? TELL US if you’re getting close to having in-game XMB. TELL US if you’re only going to be able to implement one wanted feature at a time (as would seemingly be the case, based on the GAP poll). What’s it gonna hurt to let us know how things are going? If anything, I think it would please the lot of us. After all, that’s what a blog is for, right? Keep us updated, not in the dark.

All in all, you provide a wonderful service with the firmware updates. I love it when new things are added, or existing things are improved. Thank you in advance for 2.0. And here’s to knowing that 2.X will make things even beter.

  • These are cool new features, but there is still now way to communicate with your friends from inside a game. This is completely unacceptable at this point, I’ve been very patient and told people I know (who own a PS3) to do the same but this is just ridiculous now. I give up. As a PSP owner I’m happy with the improved remote play functionality, but hot spots still aren’t all that plentiful. Why is the PS3 itself not being given the attention it desperately needs?

  • Free stuff? We paid 600 bucks for this bucket of **** and we’re not able to do half the ***** the xbox 360 can do at half the price??? Please… To make matters even worse, all of our games are inferior to theirs. Ps3 is the biggest damn disaster ever in gaming. It’s a bigger upset with me than the Jaguar was.

  • Alright, this is getting frackin’ ridiculous with the spam.
And you wonder why they don’t reply.
Why should they treat / talk to us like adults when we have people immaturely spamming the comments section?
The lunatics have officially taken over the asylum.
I guess I’ll see all of you “this is it, I’m selling my PS3” whiners in the next blog post where you’ll be complaining some more about the PS3 you kept nonetheless, just like we have from the inception of this blog when you first “threatened” to sell it back.

  • @solace

    that’s why it’s a E-Riot :)

  • The don’t respond cause they can’t. What can they really come back with? Oh, we’re working on it? Yeah, we’ve heard it… Save it. Better yet, why don’t you start releasing games for the system that are AAA quality? What a joke. Sony… I hate you. I never thought I’d say it. I really wish I coud get a refund out of every thousands of dollars I’ve spent on you.

  • E-RIOT!!!!

  • Dont defend sony, they lied. I used to defend them now I dont, I mean COD 4 LOOKS BETTER ON THE 360. i DONT CARE ABOUT THE PS3 IM SELLING IT. You guys should all burn, I should have stayed with nintendo. Guess what DONT DEFEND TESE MORONS GUYS!! THEY LIED AND THEY MADE A PIECE OF $HIT CONSOLE.

  • Spamming is not the answer.

  • @Everyone
Sony did not promise XMB in game….EVER. Thank you the end.
They said they were working on it. Did that mean that they would have absolutely no trouble in getting it perfect?! NO!

@Eric Lampel: Any specific time this week?
    Thanks!

  • “Ps3 will never have in game xmg, because the half of the ram is used for os like linux. so if we would get in game xmb the game will slow down to much or crash. so buy xbox360 if you want in game xmb. i stay with the ps3 FOR NOW”

misinformation, when you run linux that a separate process, thats why you need to reboot the system to enter linux.

  • They don’t reply because they don’t have anything to say.

Do you think a macho company like SONY is going to come out and say “your right, we did wrong? Nope.

  • I HAVE TOLD YOU GUYS A HUNDRED TIMES! You will never get in game XMB. The Playstation 3 architecture was flawed from the beginning. It only has 256 MB of RAM! How can you run the XMB and a Blue Ray game at the same time with a stinking 256 MB of RAM? Any genious want to answer that. The XMB takes over 60 MB to run itself right now! (which is pathetic since its barely graphical mostly text based OS circa 1982) Don’t you bring up the video RAM we all know that doesn’t count to run an operating system so don’t even bring up that damn RSX video RAM.

THEY LIED AND THEY MADE A PIECE OF $HIT CONSOLE.

dont lie, cod4 loks the same in both systems.

  • you’re all acting like a bunch of spoilt brats, and after listening to some of you in game i know that’s what you are. daddy buy you a ps3 did he? or are you just making out his console is yours?

anyway, thanks for the heads up on the new features in this FW update, i’m going to enjoy them.

you people who [DELETED] all the time seriously need to get a grip

expect nothing from Sony, and everything we do get is a bonus!

    it’s that simple.

  • LMAO.

    Some of you people are:

    Pathetic
    Immature
    Retarded
    Ignorant
    Stupid
    Overreacting

And so on and so forth.

Lets just say this was 1.95?

    Huh?

    Then what?

    Would you not be complaining??

Yea, the [DELETED] will come, just not now, PS3 s still great, its just getting to peoples heads.

    Ridiculous.

  • @StuntF50

    You suck.

  • Someone just said CoD4 looks better on 306, and they are gonna go buy a 360 because we didnt get in-game XMB YET?

LMAO, Stupid ass people these days….

  • WE need a moderator to be on here to ban some of these whinny pukes that re-post the same crap over and over. I can see why a lot of you might be upset with no in game XMB or messaging, but Sony never promised that it would be in this update. You all made that up in your own minds. Constructive criticism and ideas for the future what we need to move forward to the ideal system for every one. Not mindless rants that no one reads.

  • As much as I would like in-game XMB, I still understand they didn’t implemented it yet and never promised it.

BUT, I really feel insulted with the remark that we get what we ask for when Eric talks about Remote Start. Who the hell here asked for remote start? It’s convenient, but not even a close second to people asking for in-game xmb. That was pure PR BS.

@Eric: take back your statement and apologize. We’re not drones that eat everything a corporate “suit” says.

  • Who ever said the the PS3 can’t do in-game XMB is ignorant. Resistance FOM and Lair both have in-game XMB. If the game can do it, the PS3 definitely can.

  • k, so a lot of ppl are mad they didnt include ingame xmb. they never promised it – correct. theres a lack of communication between the company and its fanbase. Maybe this is why there is now going to be an official information board that will acess(sp?) certain rumors on the ps3….dang…they did it again! they outsmarted us! (thats positive sarcasm btw)

  • Could people stop spamming, it’s annying enough to reload this page as it is.
