Firmware 2.00 Video Demonstration

451 0

Hello again. To better illustrate new features in the forthcoming firmware update, we’ve created a quick video demonstration of some of the new features (shot using the PLAYSTATION Eye). Inside, you’ll see a quick run through of how Themes, the Information Board, Remote Start, and custom photo and music playlists work.

As soon as the firmware goes active, our System Software Update page will refresh to reflect all of the features found in firmware v2.00.

  • They need to adjust the color and appearance/size of the fonts on the menus. I tried a background from the PS store and it looked horrible. You can’t even see where you are on the menus. Terrible. Adjust that sh*t! Make the font larger or more legible against different backgrounds. Also, ALLOW ME TO ENABLE MEDIA SERVER CONNECTIONS! What’s the point of that option if I have to keep it OFF in order to stay ONLINE!? POS!!!

  • I will say it’s nice that we get some new features but I am very disappointed that there is still no in-game XMB access.

  • Okay, never mind. Just the stuff he mentioned.

  • Guess what…it’s LIVE!

  • @206

That’s what you get for not reading previous comments, idiot.

  • I just got it, and hey, its cool shtuff.

  • where do you guys live

  • i thought that 2.00 was soposed to be a good update? obviously i was wrong…the only thing thats cool about this is that you can access it through a psp…and i dont even have one so it doesnt matter. as much as i wanted 2.00 to come soon, right now i wish that this was just 1.9.

  • Comment 161 by Strboymo is the one thing Sony needs to read. I love my system but every time I see a person buy a game for “the other system” I know it’s because they’ve been conviced it’s the better device, and they’ve been convinced of that 1. because it was out first obviously, I mean nothing we can do about that of course without the aide of a time machine but 2. because there are simply things it’s better at.

I’m not saying we should all run out and buy one of those pieces of garbage but every time we say the PS3 is awesome they simply say “great but why cant you invite a friend into a game?” now you can put all those tools in the devkits and assume people will implement them the way Eye of Judgment allows you to send invites but when devs a strapped for time and recourses they’re going to eliminate the extras as we’ve all already seen in some games. No voice chat in some, complete lack of clan support or match making in others. So the less you require developers to do the easier things are for them and the happier thay are to make games for the system. Simply Put Devs want these features to be spoon fed to them, they dont want to have to code these things in, that takes time and money.

That is what all the dissapointed people here are really saying. They want these features because they know it makes it better for everyone. We can communicate withour friends without turning off our games, Invite them into our games while we play them and turn on the music stored in our drives when we get tired of the music in the game.

These are features that we WANT. they make the system better by having them because it makes everyone’s lives easier. Yeah playlists and new back grounds are great but those things are not improving the ease of use of the system. If a person has to reset their system just to say “what’s up” when someone comes on line and messages then then that’s an inconvenience and it needs to be rectified sooner than your need to post news snippets on my screen.

It’s nice that you’re making better commecials now and it’s nice to hear that you’re working on things but you have to try to please the customers that bought your product by giving them what they’re asking for atleast in one or two cases every now and then. If you’re not holding back atleast communicate your progress on that but if you are holding back STOP IT already. The customer dosent care if you’re not in a rush or if the system has a planned 10 year life span. It’s not going to get that far if people stop buying it because it dosent have the features we NEED for the sake of convenient social gaming.

  • chainlink, you are yelling at yourself? 206?

  • I have a question, if I turn on the scrolling headlines and find I don’t like it can I turn it back off?

  • It’s looking pretty cool but I am dissapointed about no XMB. I mean the 360 had access to messaging and music during games since launch why can’t we enjoy the same. anyway Thanks for the video it was cool!

  • Nice work, guys. As always, we are grateful that you are continuing to work on the platform and adding new functionality as time goes on.

  • Sony, Yes I am pissed off about no in game XMB.

    BUT

I am very happy about how you dudes went and put it up as soon it was ready. First Good Job of the day to Sony. Ok not, Sony I’ll just wait til next FW next year. Maybe it’s just that I’ve had my smoke.

  • East coast, USA

  • Pretty sure you can turn off the headlines if you want…

  • @njpunk24

    cool

  • @212 agreed.

  • its great and all but y not in game XMB? it would have been a great adition, still thnx sony for yet another great update.

  • Oh well. As long as Sony keeps on keeping on… Maybe one day we’ll all be happy. We’ll have in-game XMB and I’ll be able to enable my media server crap.

Every one of us with a PS3 is dealing with the same kind of embarrassment that comment 161 details. We’re trying to defend your System Sony trying to convince others to buy it too, but the longer you keep us waiting for these things the harder it is to do and the more worn out your loyal customers get from all this type of wrestling with “the others”.

Hey you know what if you have to trash the XMB and rebuild it from the ground up we’re all for it! Give us a firmware disk that wipes out the old one and installs a fresh brand new creation that offers all these options and isnt a patched up design if that’s what it takes but Hurry up for god’s sake, At least make the effort to look like you’re TRYING to do something! As it stands it feels like You only work 3 or 4 days a week and we know you dont but it’s hard to prove to the guys you’re trying to win over.

  • Thanks for the playlist features EL. Anyway, I see that it’s not possible to add mp3s/photos from outside the PS3 HDD. For example, external HDD. Now if you can add that to the next firmware update, that’d be great. Thanks for this update. Love it.

  • sorry about the double post, appearntly I hit the submit key early and didnt see it. the second one is my complete thought if ANYONE from sony reads this blog that’s the post that needs to be fully read.

  • Also 161 is now 158 by Strboymo I guess they deleted some of the troll posts, so maybe they ARE paying attention.

  • Just downloaded 2.0 and I have something to say. I like the whole ticker but it overlaps the messages such as “signed in” or “(friends name) has signed on”, maybe it should be in the lower corner? and why are there now 2 network icons. I get one is PS network and the other is just network, but WHY 2? cant you just combine them? like the icon though.

  • It was a great update. People are just disappointed by the fact of no in game XMB, so it made the update a lot less special. (Extreme example) It’s like having your dog die on your birthday, it ruins the whole thing regardless of how good it was. All in all, i love the themes. If you update and add themes regularly, i will seriously be the happiest kid alive. These themes add a great sense of personalization to everything. Again, great update.

  • I’ve got it up and running – now is there a place where I can download new themes?

  • @213 njpunk24

Yeah…I’m yelling at myself. I thought I was the first one to find out the update was live. Silly me.

  • while most didn’t know what to expect and commenced with the unavoidable speculation, this update is just a bit underwhelming. sony is making it more challenging for even a fairly loyal and patient person like me to resist from investing my money into another console until it takes more into regard the wishes of its consumers. this is something i think some of you guys working on the playstation are underestimating and could really hurt you at a time when you’re trying to garner the support you really need.

  • Where can we download new themes???

I STILL WANT MY IN-GAME XMB SONY… for the next firmware… OR else…. *glares*

  • awesome themes, cant wait to dl more. plus your starting to give me a reason to add some of my mp3’s to my ps3. theyve been sitting on my laptop, but I think I’ll try putting some music on my system now. the update wasn’t all great though. I do believe you guys are starting to “beat around the bush” with the updates. very few wanted the psp remote start (nevertheless its still great, and i will be getting a psp soon)…

the information board is great. I have a feeling I’m going to be watching it a lot here in the near future.

if I can add on your next direction for an update….please add in-game messaging. I’m not asking for much. It doesnt even have to be voice or picture chat. Plain ol’ text chatting will do. easier said than done though.

    Thanks again.

P.S. its november and sony has been a little tight-lipped about home. can we get someone on here to talk about how the home application is coming along? not asking for much. just wanna know what’s up with playstation home these days? hope its not too much to ask for.. Thank you.

  • I know we all want the in-game XMB. We also want to organize our games in folders (e.g. having a PS1 classics folder, a demo folder and a downloaded game folder). Well, they sorta did that. Click square once on the games folder and you’ll see that long list of demo games and downloaded ames fall into a nice little folder. I wish though they had separated Demoes and full downloads. But nice touch.

  • half an hour ago downloaded upgrade. 2.0 ….everything is clear and clean….great improvement…good additions too….there is so much to do on the ps3 i do not know how some have so much time to post….bet a few can not wait to complain about the next upgrade…it seems to be their sole purpose for existence…get with the sony program and all will be well and besides when some are on their own program they want perfection perfection instead of progress…tell me what is perfect in life…nothing

  • In-Game XMB is not at the top of my list, but even I know that it has got to be the #1 request of everyone. My only request .. and i think it is at the top 5 or so … is better divx/xvid compatibility. NEITHER OF WHICH WE GOT. All i have to say about the 2.0 firmware is .. WOW! and i dont mean it in a good way.

  • @ P Tear Griffen

Hit options on the demos and name them demos. Then when you make a folder it will name the folder demos

  • p.s. I agree with what everyone else is saying. We’ve waited long enough. Im patient, but not having the requested updates in the latest firmware is just not acceptable. I think Sony is looking at the most requested feature list sorted in the wrong direction. Not to mention the TV advertised PS Home that is yet to exist to all but a few beta testers. ITS COMING does not cut it anymore. Im fortunate enough to have enough cash to get a 360 too, and by god , im gettin one. Its 360 games for me from here on out. At least until Sony gets their act together anyways. Im sick of this wait and get disappointed game. Peace out PS3 land.

  • I know that the PS3 is mostly a gaming system and partly a home entertainment center. But Christ, my $40 dvd player with divx capability can play a wider range of movie formats. What are you guys doing Sony? Someone up there needs to get a hearing aid. Obviously noone can hear the customers requests. And i dont think we could be voicing them any louder.

  • sony, wat r u doing guys??

i outlined ur plan for domination in the previous blog update….

well let me tell it again:

nxt firmware update to our ps3’s and psn we need this:

    – IN game XMB
-Play music while we play games
    – Picture in picture maybe???
-Home of course, give us a bloody release date
    – WE need an ACHIEVEMENT POINT system similar to Xbox Live
    – Make a user want to use the online, not that i dont want to, its awesomee, but everyone wants FEATURES!

    for psn:

-Stop with the silly little icons
-When we get videos, we want a preview, not download it then trash it
-Watever happened to sony’s own sonic stage?? Use ur resources goddamit..
u can make an iTunes section of Psn with it

-get devs to give demos for psn out more frequently
-how bout manufacture some specific ps3 keyboards with tons of hotkeys?

  • Whos ever idea it was for hearts and rainbows needs to get fired. Other than that, ok update.

  • Oh wow. I want that winter theme.

  • i do like backgrounds but we need to be able to respond to ppl while in game. If someone wants to play tekken but im playing COD4 i can tell him i might be awhile. In game music would be cool to if your letting us make playlists.

btw i already made my own without this update. Just change the info. Its easy

    just get it done

    thanks

  • First of all Sony has been very good of responding to our requests and it takes a lot of time to implement some of the more advanced features properly. There will be a similar system to the achievements… maybe you have heard of it called HOME TROPHIES which are even cooler than achievements. It’s great that they are working on PSP->PS3 connectivity and it seems like their promises of customizable XMB, connective play, etc are all coming to fruitation. Lempel and his team are obviously working hard WITHOUT our annual fees so we should be very grateful.

  • NO XMB INGAME :(

  • The update isn’t bad but I will say they need to at least get messaging in there. I myself don’t even use the PS3 messaging system because of this. Actually it henders me from actually wanting to meet and add friends in the service, why? cause if I’m in a game I don’t want to quit to answer “mail”. So I rather play the quiet gamer in the corner and not say anything.

Not having that feature I think is hurting the growth of your online network.

  • Looks like the mob effect happening here. I would guess that probably half of the bitter complainers don’t even own a PS3, but it didn’t stop them from manipulating an angry response from those who are susceptible, for their own agendas (you know what bad karma has in store for you).

It might be too much to expect from the gaming crowd, but for those who are genuine about your concerns, at least show some emotional restraint. Take a step back, and really try to see what this update has brought us, in addition to the previous updates. It is a process (nonetheless an impressive one, to see the PS3 evolve substantially over the pass year). The truely positive things are perhaps too easy to sweep aside, when one’s own agenda is too important that the world should evolve around it.

Oh how strongly have people requested full customisation, and now that it has arrived (in a form that puts the 360 to shame, seriously), people immediately forget and claim that they’ve been asking for something else all along.

“Location free” on a new level? I am perked by this! Add official DLNA endorsement; add ground-breaking non-proprietary USB support for the mouse/keyboard/external HDD that you already own; and add a great web browser (let alone one that exists), and you have an experience that puts all the other consoles to shame. It is like fine wine. And all this is just bonus on top of a game console.

How about some fairness then, eh? Those who don’t intend to be fair, sucks to be you.

  • I’m sure we will get in-game XMB soon enough since they said we would have it in videos that existed before launch of the ps3

  • I say IN-GAME XMB and Music. Features that other system has since launch. Messaging to friends via In-Game. Thanks Sony, but you need to fix the problems people want fixed.

  • I liked the update. I would have loved it better with XMB access during gameplay (at least only for messages.) But, its something I can look past. I do love the customizable themes though. That certainly was a surprise to me.

Thanks for the update guys. Keep up the great work.

  • As for suggestions:

    1. Ability to make a folder yourself to organize the XMB.
    2. Being able to read messages without having to log off the game.

These are all I really care for. I am sure other people will let you know what they want.

  • Thanks for the update, i downloaded it about 2 hours ago just before i started playing warhawk. The theme packs are sweet! I cant wait untill some one makes some insane looking skin.
