Another E3 Winding Down, Plus a Quick Clarification

556 1

Well, we’re in the home stretch! A new format for E3 brought a new look and feel, a few challenges and most importantly a great opportunity to show off our wares for all PlayStation platforms. All the planning, preparations and hard work has paid off into what was a great E3 for SCEA. Congratulations to everyone involved in making that happen! And a thanks to all of you guys for your positive comments regarding the press conference and what we showed there. I know Jack was checking out all the comments on his post and really appreciated your feedback. I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing our games via the trailers on PlayStation Network. I just wanted to also let you know that yes, we hear you, and we are working to make those great games you saw into more interactive content and demos.

One quick thing before I head to the show for the last day. I just wanted to clarify something. I’ve seen a lot of posts this morning related to the 60GB SKU and the comments by SCEE President David Reeves. As we announced this week, SCEA’s product offering in North America consists of a 80GB PS3 available in August and a 60GB PS3 available now for $499. We will have ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of consumers for the foreseeable future.

Talk to you again soon, once we get back from Santa Monica.

  • We need to make a dam strong petition.to keep the 499 going.

  • whats with david man it looks like the communication between scee and scea its not there anymore and its more of a competition…

  • @249 stop trolling… the incopetent idiots are the ones still supporting this… now that is what i call an idiot

    http://www.lazygamer.co.za/xbox-360/microsoft-admits-all-xbox-360s-are-faulty/

  • I don’t know.I just want to hear from the those 2 on This BLOG as to whats really going on.No offense to the Sony spokesman but we can’t really go on with what you say.

We want to hear it directly from kaz and David right here on this blog.

    I speak for everyone when i say.We WANT ANSWERS!!!!NOTHING CONTRADICTING.JUST STRAIGHT TRUTH!

  • “[UPDATE 2] SCEA has since confirmed the production cessation to GameSpot, but Karraker emphasized it would not be sudden. “The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted,” he said. “We are offering a full featured PS3 for $100 lower than the original price and will do so for months to come, allowing consumers the opportunity to acquire this model at this adjusted price.”

Why are we currently being lied to? The product is out of production and soon enough the only thing to remain is a $600 ps3 vs a $400 elite XBOX 360.

  • @246 of course the consumers will buy it, becase the new model, is inferior in features and quality ( since it uses cheaper parts and no ee chips ) to the current model, the only thing it has on it is 20 extra gb, which is nothing and easily upgradable for less than the price difference on the 60 gb ps3

  • I CAN TYPE IN CAPS TOOOO!!!

damn kids and their whining. Why don’t you give them oh lets say…MORE THAN 1 day to get back to EVERYONE. I seriously doubt someone is monitoring the website every 10 seconds hitting the refresh button and jotting down what everyone is pleased with and pissed at. Give them a little time!!! geezes you impatient sob’s lol, i want some clarification too but 250+ comments about “BACK TO $600 AGAIN! STUPID MOVE, YOU SUCK,BLAH BLAH BLAAAAAH” is a bit much don’t you think? Obviously they ARE reading the comments otherwise MGS4 WOULDNT be an exclusive along with Haze.

  • The only viable option for Sony, if they want one SKU, is to drop the price of the 80 gig from $599 to $499 immediately after the 60 gig sells out and before the holidays arrive.

I just can’t see it happening any other way if they don’t want to disappoint consumers in a massive way.

  • smooth move.

  • derrick, I came here specifically for one purpose. To cure all the Sony sheep form this spell of ignorance iditos like Karraker shine over you. Because of my comment, everyone else saw what Kaz said and it proved Reeves was right. Without my comment, you and everyone else here would have found out about this far later if at all. I bring facts to your disillusioned (sp?) existence kiddo.

And foruntately not everyone here is as blinded as you and saw my comment and knew the truth. All you seem to want to do is spread ignorant misinformation that you have no basis for whatsoever regarding 360 defect rates. You do understand that you can’t just make up arbitray figures and claim they are correct right?

Like I said, grow up a bit and once you learn what real research is and get yourself an education, then you can blast your ignorant opinion all over the internets. Until then, everytime you do that, you can expect others smarter than you to make you look stupid for flying off at the cuff.

  • @ All the Negativity from Numerous Posters

It seems there are some people that just can’t be made happy. SONY puts on a great show at E3. We love the games. We love the direction of the business model and what’s to be coming our way in the future months. Patience is virtue. Yeah, I want demos too. You can’t tell me that we won’t have the last laugh when all the goodness is before us and our counterpart 360 fan boys are jealous.

Be happy for #%&# sake! We just got a price cut of 100 Bones. If they discontinue the SKU so be it. If you’re on the fence about the purchase then now is the time. If, (and we can’t truly confirm either way) they happen to drop the 60GB version in lieu of a 599.00$ 80GB SKU rest assured that at some point that SKU will drop in price too. Have a little faith folks. This is a big battle between three Powerhouse Companies. Sony has been responsive to our posts. They performed well at E3 and they did so humbly. I think the message is getting across…but if you beat down the maker for each issue and forget to give praise you are fueling the media even further and creating more negative press.

In the end don’t we want great games? Competition must be tight in order for companies to feel compelled to produce better content and hardware. Sony has had its blunders over the years but in the end the company’s philosophy is based on forward thinking and cutting edge technology implemented through great design and innovation. Products like SINGSTAR, HOME and FLOW to only name a few show a commitment to providing unique, entertainment experiences. I believe Sony is doing all that they can to provide the right tools and the right reasons for developers to continue to produce exciting products that we’ll enjoy.

I love my 360 and follow their Blogs too, but whole heartedly I am more excited about my PS3. There’s something about the content SONY strives for, something that is unique to the SONY experience. Perhaps, it’s that SONY is better in touch with my gaming roots. Similarly, one could say that Sony better captures that feeling you have when you visit a Disney theme park. That feeling that despite how old you may have become you can still manage to find the magic!

Sit back, Relax and keep negativity constructive.

Oh, and a great friend of mine just bought a PS3 yesterday due in part to my excitement and to your showing at E3.

    Thanks SONY!

  • @256.You know we can’t wait we have a reason to be impatient.

  • To deadxbabiesxinc:

Haze is a TIMED exclusive, and MGS4 won’t be one for long if PS3 sales continue to lag.

The Konami boss for Europe and North America has recently stated that if MGS4 does not sell well, they may have to “take steps” (i.e. develop it for 360).

  • It’s good to do a quick response about 60gb issue.

But problem still exist… $499 60gb still will phase out, that means price drop is also temporary action, it’s nothing different as before but just few days delay.

I really hope you to think about a real flexible plan with more lower sku. Maybe totally remove the hard disk, let players prepare by themselves, install it is not difficult, shop can also to give them help.

no matter what kind of sku , lower than $499 is really necessary, I believe you will find the best way to reach the goal …

  • @257 hey fuzzy! its unforgiven form GS haha.I agree i just want to know if what you said is going to hold true.

  • Words of advice to Sony from a longtime video game and sony customer….

Your first Dual SKU model was not very good. Most people wanted the 60GB model with the wifi etc and did not want the 20 GB. It made sense to do away with that Dual SKU sales model.

Then when the 60GB model with Wifi, HD movies went down to $499 it looked very good next to the $479 360 elite. And the inclusion of an 80GB model with Motorstorm was a nice elite option for those who wanted the game and a bit more HD space. As opposed to your previous Dual SKU model, the cheaper model was now the more popular though. Sales on amazon, retailers etc. prove this. This Dual SKU model is actually a good one that will work (as opposed to your first one and Microsoft’s Core unit SKU).

Having only the 80GB bundle forces people to buy Motorstorm, and not everyone wants that game. I love the game but can understand if people don’t want it. This one SKU model is NOT good. Once the 60GBs sell out you will see sales stagnate again, just in time for the crucial holiday season.

Sony, please, even if you sell a 60GB without the Emotion Engine, please, do not stop selling a $499 unit. Its a mistake and PR blunder if you do so.

  • Demos!? Oh God, please let it be Heavenly Sword!! Heh, sorry, I’m just really excited about it- I’ve been watching it since the 2005 press conference. :) Whatever it will be- Thank You!~ But hey, you can’t please every single person out there. Take it by the numbers and see what could take out the largest number of people in one move- just like in video games! :P Take it easy and get plenty of sleep- I’m sure you’ve had a pretty exhausting week.

  • “we are working to make those great games you saw into more interactive content and demos.”

    Seeing is believing.

  • @ Muckraker: Exactly man…people just can’t give them a little pat on the back for all they’ve done so far! I think they are doing a fine job in a TOUGH battle.

I’d also like to add to my last comment, altho I think someone already mentioned it but i don’t wanna read 250+ comments to find out.

Maybe with this huge deal with the 60gb getting the 100 dollar price drop was a good idea…obviously. Yeah they’re selling like hot cakes right now and maybe after all the 60gbs are gone…the 80gbs will be out at almost the same time in which THEY will also get a price drop. Maybe they have some sort of plan? Yanno most companies have a strategy…I seriously doubt the guys at Sony are trying to screw everyone over…from my past experience with Sony, their customer satisfaction is what they strive for.

  • With Sony there is no constructive criticism. The market has done nothing but lambast them with feedback after feedback telling them loud and clear that they wouldn’t sell so pathetically if they would just lower the price. Instead of doing that, they invent nrew ways to keep the $499 price barrier fully in tact.

Sorry, but some of us actually enjoy having 3rd party support and not having to spend 6-12 months waiting for the multiplatform games to arrive, only to run and look better on 360. The industry has told Sony what they need to do. They keep refusing to so much as acknowledge us gamers and instead insist on crapping all over us with their constant lies and pseudo price cuts.

If you think they have been responsive, you are living in a dream world pal. There has been no bigger battle cry from gamers around the globe since this console launched than “LOWER THE DAMN PRICE YOU IDIOTS!”. Constantly, for 8 months now that is all everyone has been saying. Just when they act like they are doing something along those lines, they pull this crap and mere days after dropping the price effectivley raise it back up.

Sony PlayStation 3: “This is lieing”

    -TGC

  • Wow. I’ve been reading up on this more and now that I see Kaz has officially said basically the same thing Reeves did, I’m pretty disgusted to be honest. I swear, as much as I dislike Mircrosoft as a company in general, the 360 starts looking better everyday. Sony, please don’t tell me that as soon as you stop all the lies, arrogance, and bring some promising looking stuff our way along with a great E3 conference that you’re going to hit us with this total [DELETED] concerning the 60 GB model PS3.

This would be just plain flat out STUPID, and will make your loyal fanbase extrememly pissed off. I for one can say that if you pull this crap, I will buy an Xbox 360 and shift my focus & support towards it. Furthermore, if Metal Gear Solid 4 goes Multi-platform I will sell my PS3 & buy a bunch of 360 games regardless of how interested I am in Sony’s upcoming 1st party titles, just out of sheer disgust for your shady business tactics. Think about how idiotic this move would be, how cutthroat it will make you look, and how disappointed your supporters will be. Eventually nobody will care about any of the cool stuff you have in store for Playstation if you continue to conduct yourselves this way. Hell, I already own the PS3 and I bought the 60GB model at $599. So why do I care? Because I’d like to see the installed base grow, and I’m well aware of how many Playstation gamers out there who don’t yet have a PS3 will feel. They will loose trust and faith in you. Even long-time PS enthusiests such as myself.

    @ Majimojo1985

“There isn’t any problem with the 360?over a million were defective(Note not an exact number)”

You know what though, that is the 360’s ONLY problem. They’ve now added the 3-years to the warranty, and once their new hardware hits, which is soon, they will have no real problems. At least they’re upfront, honest, and good to their customers.

I couldn’t even get some minor crap with my registered PS3 worked out with Sony’s customer support. I had the EXACT same issue with Microsoft and Nintendo because it was related to my email, and they fixed it in less than an hour. Sony went on to tell me it was simply not possible to fix, when I work in web design & programming, and know first-hand what a minor and simple fix it would be. They choose to lie to me and ignore the problem simply because they didn’t feel like taking the time to fix my issue, which was exremely minor to begin with. That’s just sad, but also hilarious in a very pathetic way that Nintendo can fix something Sony can’t, when Sony is suppose to be the “high-end”, and technically advanced company.

Again, Microsofts problem with the 360 is 1 problem, and they’re fixing it. Sony on the other hand, will be simply creating yet another problem for themselves if they pull this deceptive crap with discontinuing the $499 60GB model of the PS3. They will loose faith in countless supporters, myself included, and they will prove Peter Moore 100% correct ragarding his statement on how the “PS3 price cut is all just smoke & mirrors”.

My advice as a Sony supporter: Don’t do it.

  • Any truth to the rumor that the 80GB model will fix the controller Bluetooth sync issues?

  • It was a good show and many good games..
But were are the japanese games? Team Icos games or game? And white knight story? and so on? Maybe at Tokyo game show later this year???

  • @nokia6250tank

Bad idea, no hard drive would make it even harder to differentiate the PS3 in terms of offerings, from Microsoft’s 360. I do agree though that prices must be driven even lower if the PS3 is to maintain it’s exclusives and ensure that it wins this “marathon”. Ultimately I think Sony is gonna have to make a “ballsy” move if it wants to win this market over.

  • 1. It is a PR nightmare, people do NOT enjoy being toyed with these “price adjustments” which are actually pseudo-price cuts as a previous commenter said perfectly. Even loyal fans such as myself are disgusted, what do you think people who are thinking of buying a PS3 will feel?
    2. Sales will die just in time for the holidays, PS3 will be destroyed by the 360.

  • @ THE_Giant_Crap

I have always pondered the concept that if someone was actually smarter than another; would it do them any good to make a point of it?

Perhaps this is something I don’t need to ponder anymore. Do you?

    Respect

  • Many of you are blowing this out of proportion!

The PS3 has had an awsome week, enjoy it!

If you have a PS3 good, if you don’t have a PS3 get one now.

Stop the whining please, it makes you look like asses.

  • @275

dont forget that some of this users are 360 fanboys just trolling here

  • How is this blowing it out of proportion? We are not whining, we are concerned about the PS3’s future. I for one do not want to see it become this gen’s pathetic Gamecube

  • @275 good week at E3 means nothing.compared to the cluster Hell thats going on today.

  • Sony did say that we will get some stuff after E3. “I have a confession, E3 is not over yet.”

  • based on stories on other official game sites, this pricing SKU still is not exactly clear.. and leaves a lot of gamers unhappy with what they are making of it.. and as an owner of the 60GB model, i’m left wondering what the deal is.. and thankfully, i am not a gamer from AU or Europe because I would seriously be disappointed with no price cut period.. only questions remain… what if my system breaks down..? do I still get support..? how are patches going to affect multiple different systems when one has an Emotion Engine and others do not? how am I supposed to feel after paying $600+ for a system less than 6 months ago that’s already being phased out and I received no free games or movies out of box?? if this is only really a temporary price drop to clear out that old inventory, why would anyone want to buy the system now at $499 or want to pay more later on simply for 20GB(which is chicken scratch anymore) and a game that’s frustratingly hard..?
all i can say is i hope the support for these phased out systems won’t be a hindrance and this negativity gets swept away by some better news.. E3 was a good showing, but this pricing issue is left unresolved for those overseas and those who don’t pick up the 60gb model SKU…

  • I’m new to the world of consoles as i never owned one before. Granted, i was mostly interested in a blu-ray/dvd player with the added bonus of playing a game now and again so the playstation at a new reduced price would have been a sure-buy for me.

I’m in europe so the “bargain” we are getting instead of a price reduction is this: two games which i would never buy anyway and one extra joystick i don’t need. Sorry sony, not interested anymore. I’m not in the habit of buying things i absolutely don’t need. But then again, we are just poor europeans who would pay anything for a playstation 3, right Sony?

Being new to the world of consoles (since last week), i am truly amazed how bad sony handled this whole situation. It is nothing short of incredible. Then again, i have already noticed that sony’s reputation in that department is legendary (bad).

In my opinion, Sony should learn to behave a bit more humble. After all, this is a 600 euro console with nearly no decent game available for it so far (and an almost empty store). Don’t ever forget that Sony.

Price reduction is the only way it might become a succes. Price reduction and better ceo’s, marketing,… I mean, they get paid enough, don’t they?

an ex-potential customer, who is still amazed how something like this can happen.

  • UMICH_Egypt_Alliance_Productions

    SCE: 1995-2007

“The Art of War is Truth. The first causality of War is Truth and if truth be told respect and honesty is lost in this so called “Battle for the living room” and “earning customer satisfaction.”

With that in mind, I still own a PS3 and have done so since it launched as well as a PS2, PSP, and even a PSone all when they first launched respectively, but this is getting ridiculous. In facet, everyone needs to remember that Sony and SCE are a business and at the end of the day like any business company, they [Sony and SCE] want to make “Money” instead of earning “More Customers” and “Keeping those earned customers” through “Customer Satisfaction.”

P.S. Sony and SCE will never read this comment and take it seriously. Even if they do read it, they ignore it.

  • C`mon esay!!!!!!!!

  • Then why does it seem as if Microsoft and Nintendo are caring about their customers while Sony is spitting in the face of their most loyal fans?

  • Everything I’ve been reading from gaming sites say that sony is dropping the 60 gig sku. All I can say is don’t! Sales are up with the $499 price, and by taking it away it will only make sales be even slower than they were before the price drop. If you are dropping any sku, drop the 80 gig, the 60 gig is needed for sales. I hope you reconsider, not for me, but for sony and its sales of the PS3.

  • You guys seriously need better PR people. I mean, I love sony: I have had PS, PS2, and PS3 now, but you guys keep blowing it. This single expensive SKU idea is just bad. There will probably be a price drop around the holidays to $499 for the SKU, but why have the 80gig be stagnant for months until the season hits. Lame. It would have worked if you guys could keep tighter reigns on your exec’s. Where is Kaz? He should be telling people to keep things like this a secret.

What are you guys doign over there?

  • From Joystiq: Update 4: We got this clarified statement from Karraker, who said “The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted. We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won’t be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated.”

In other words… Sony says, “suck on it. We might go exclusively with a $600 SKU, we might not. Until then, we’re going to leave it all up in the air while we go take a dump on all that good will we generated with the phantom price cut to $500 and the strong E3 showing. We’re Sony, what do we care what you think?”

Why should I care, considering I already bought my PS3? Because I’m concerned about the future of this platform. I’m concerned about the poor ports of games that were obviously designed for the 360 and I’m concerned about third party developers going exclusive to Microsoft because what’s the point to investing your time and money for a system with no install base?

  • @Darkendless

    Are you for real?

Yeah, some of the Sony exec’s should keep their mouths shut, but it’s not like the MS exec’s are so much better.

This price-cut thing turned in to a mess, but it’s not like it’s the end of the world. People who’re buying PS3’s now and in the future are still getting a much better deal than what I got when I bought mine. I’m still very happy with my PS3, it’s an awsome machine, I use it every day for a lot of different things.

    Stop the negativity.

  • humm i found this intresting?

If,Sony says they have enough 60gb’s ps3’s to last them a few months?Wouldn’t it be logical that. Now think about this

Option 1.Clear out of the 60 gb and make a profit for that model within a few months and then the 80gb price becomes the only main attraction?

Option 2.The 80gb verson will no longer have to use an EE chip for BC if they plan on useing only downloadable content and the 60GB have EE chips in them.Which makes the 80GB cheaper to make and by the holidays the 80gb becomes $499?Provided the 60gb arn’t completly out by then?

The thing is How much can Sony profit from the 60gb to even be able to afford droping the Price of the 80gb to 499 by the holidays (Note,60gb’s arn’t complety sold out yet).

    what would you all think?

  • Deviation worded what I feel exactly. I’m sure more of Sony’s loyal fans feel the same. WE WANT PS3 TO SUCCEED.

  • @Majimojo1985: Here’s what I honestly believe we’ll see by Holiday 2007.

From Sony, the 60gb’s will gradually disappear leading up to the holiday months leaving only the 80gb’s. The “Limited Edition” bundle will remain at the 599 price point, but we’ll get a vanilla SKU, plain box 80gb at the 499 price point.

Erstwhile, since rumors of a drop are circulating within the MS camp, I think we’ll see MS drop the price of the HDDVD addon to 99.99, the Core system to 199.99, the Premium to 299.99. The Elite will remain at 479.99 but will be bundled with the HDDVD addon.

Why I feel safe in my prediction:
Besides the obvious regarding Sony (the obvious being it would be absolutely suicidal for them to phase out the 499 and not replace it with a bare-bones 80gb model at the same price point), the price changes for Microsoft would put them in competition with both the Wii (the Core would be 50 dollars less, the Premium would be 50 dollars more), while keeping the Elite at 479 while bundling it with the HDDVD would put them in direct competition with Sony. It would also give them a place to throw that new, albeit silly, Halo 3 Limited Edition console SKU – right in between the Premium and Elite price points.

Then we’d have a real console war on our hands. ;)

  • Thanx for this info there is alot oF noobs CRying out there Because there so beloved ps3 is getting replace

  • I don’t believe that they can release a PS3 w/o a HD. Some games use that hard drive to install files so it cuts down on load times. Doing away with it will just give developers more headaches than it’s worth.

  • @295,We better hope,thats their true intention.

  • Amazing E3, you definitely delivered!

  • @295 That won’t work because that will make Motorstorm the only diference between the bundle and the vanilla SKU and that’s definitely not worth $100.
