Firmware 1.82 Coming Soon…

562 0

Hey everyone, you told us you wanted to hear about updates a few days in advance, so here’s a quick heads up that we have a PS3 firmware update in the works. [UPDATE: it’s available today]

Firmware 1.82 is an update that enables the playback of AVC High Profile (H.264/MPEG-4) files. As most of you know, these are high quality files that you’ll now be able to play on your PS3. Hopefully this update is moving us closer to the audio playback features many of you commented about in my post the other week. We’re continuing to evaluate and improve things across the board, including PS2 software compatibility. Thanks for all of your support and feedback, keep it coming!

  • Hello Everyone! I’m back once to get some suggestions. I am about to buy a PlayStation 3, but I don’t know what High Definition TV to get. I don’t want anything too fancy, but I want the picture to still look superb. I’m looking more towards a 32″ tv for a room. What brand, and what TV would anyone suggest me to get? Thanks everyone!

  • Have you abonned Linux? Will there be more work from Sony on those areas or are they a dead end?
And are Sony being silent about it because they want to phase it out? Are you aware of the petition?
    http://www.petitiononline.com/RSX/petition.html

And we see the games becoming more and more expensive what are you doing to fight this? If anything?

  • i swear if i don’t get a lair demo this Thursday somebody is going to pay.

  • Awesome. Thanks for letting us know about it and what it does in advance.

  • SONY – Is this 1.82 release going to fix the Linksys WRT54G issue? Nobody who is using this router can connect to EA Servers, regardless on how they set it (i have mine as a static IP/ DMZ – there is no reason not to connect). If 1.82 isn’t going to fix it, is it something you are working on?

  • Is the ps3 ever going to support other video codecs such as .avi? I wanted to use your search for media server option to play movies off of my computer and songs as well but it never works, when i attempt it just wrecks the wifi in my house, it disconnects from the router and refuses to reconnect and it’s just a pain to try and set up. and converting avi files into mpeg-4 files is a pain and takes very long to do.

  • Awesome!

It’s official! This blog is better than Major Nelson’s!

Btw, are you guys taking any requests for future firmware updates? I could write a list of stuff we would like to see.

  • And I made this page (ps blog) my homepage for my PS3’s web browser!

  • its my home page on my PS3 too lol. and the homebetatrial.com is my PSP’s homepage

  • @Escobar4lifeX

Sony asked to send them through the “Contact Us” page.

  • I want to be able to turn off my PS3 via Remote Play on the PSP, that would be nice if it were possible, (also being able to turn it on, but i doubt that is possible). Also, IN GAME XMB!

  • Keep the god job going sony just make the competition go nuts he he he we trust the PS3 and the new Blue Ray games will be great!!

  • what about havin an equalizer for audio..i would love that…..and maybe syncing with itunes etc..and may we get like a new energy wave thingy in the backgound,,maybe a double helix shape

  • When I see DivX is support I’ll be surprise right now that nothing because I can just use my xbox 360 for that stuff.

  • energy saving mode for sixaxis and console itselve please:)

  • Niiiiceeeeee…

Sorry but don’t have time to read all of the posts. I just want to say that some people are asking for some things that are irrational.

    *leaves*

  • @ANYONE IN CHARGE

There is a rumor floating around the playstation forums that the official killzone beta invites have been sent out; I did not believe it until I received the invite as well. Is this a hoax?

  • Another request:

Since Japan and the US share the same region encoding for Blu-Ray discs, why not have a folder for Japanese Blu-Ray trailers in the previews part of the store? I’m guessing that there are fanboys who would want this, and with the region encoding of DVDs a thing of the past, it can only help to promote the Blu-Ray format.

I’m not advocating trailers of movies available in both countries – just Japan only titles that might not otherwise get visibility here.

    thanks!

  • Coo 1.82 AVC files very impresive a normal computer cant run on those files..

  • Why not download codec into PS3, maybe support for ISO reading.

I always wanted to ask, can PS3 read zip and rar files? Lets say when I was showing off my large file of Furry Art, there was some art pics that came up that weren’t in my folder, but zip up.. I was like, those not mine :P

  • Sorry Ahh Bisto, I dont do Fanbois.

Grow and get a life, and stop complaining.

@368 – That is not true.

@361 and 359 – We are getting the notes through the contact us page, and are filtering through them. We’ll have a post on here soon about that.

  • I had to look for that post… hmm I would buy other PS3 to hack it, which I already did. Nice 20gb, I want to see PS3 be full head on desktop. So if you are planing to buy new PC, look into full running PS3 with Linux..

Just on that note my main desktop is SGI Fuel, UNIX never felt any better. Power to IRIX.

  • I have a suggestion for those who are having trouble with their router, this may be heresy to those who are linksys loyal people, however bestbuy’s Dynex routers work well with the PS3. It’s also cheaper than linksys routers and its easy to install. Maybe just maybe simple is better.

  • Amazing once again, pushing in features into the PS3.

I’d like to see this Blog have its own blog for Firmware Features PS3 customers would love to see as I believe if they listen to the customers and people who want this on PS3, it will justify the RRP more and ship more consoles.

I want XMB access during Gameplay instead of the Quit Game normal menu during gameplay.

I know its a rough idea but doing this during Gameplay would be awesome, heres a look of what idea I had in mind!

  • Patrick Seybold

you mean about the next firmwire update??????

  • This is great news.

Howevever I am still struggling to in fact export/convert my avi/divx/etc files to MP4 format.

I am using FFMPEGX for OSX and would love to know what settings people are using.

I don’t want super HD quality because that takes to long to convert. Something in the range of 640×352 would we fine for me.

Anyone got a link to a comprehensive guide to exporting settings for the PS3?

    Cheers

  • Great to hear about the updates!! thanks!

If possible please add the following in future updates:

    1) MP3 Playlists Capabilities
    2) Itunes Sharing Access.. key for mac users like myself

  • @ rockmanjoey

only bad thing about that would be it would be more difficult to turn off controller and stuff. i think you should just press it once for the quit game menu and hold it down for XMB.

  • Ok, I guess the answer I just got from Patrick S. wasn’t clear enough due to the wording of my question.

    @Patrick S.
Has there been emails sent from Sony with the following text, on the account Killzone_Beta, through the playstation network email service:
    Attention PLAYSTATION 3 User,

PLAYSTATION NETWORK is getting Killzone battleready, and we’re looking for beta testers to provide crucial feedback. You must have access to a PLAYSTATION 3 system that is connected to the internet via a broadband connection, an active PLAYSTATION NETWORK account, and be 18 years or older. If you want to participate in this beta, simply reply “yes” to this message and you will be notified via email if you are accepted.

    Sincerely,
    Sony Computer Entertainment Europe

  • afrosheen: “Anyone who doesnā€™t have a 720p-capable set doesnā€™t have a true HDTV.”

That’s nonsense. 1080i was the original (and only) HDTV standard in the U.S. until demand for flat-panel displays and cheaper HD cameras pushed 720p as an alternative. Most newer displays now support both resolutions, but 1080i has always been the common denominator for HDTV in the U.S. NBC and CBS broadcast in 1080i, and pretty much every HD device except for the PS3 supports 1080i output. Those are the facts.

afrosheen: “1080i is an old hack and is much worse than 720p.”

That’s opinion — not fact. The fact is that 1080i pushes about 12% more pixels per field than 720p, and has a functional resolution that’s more than twice that of 720p.

afrosheen: “Is half field rendering more pleasing than full field, particularly in fast motion sources like uh, video games or sports broadcasts?”

Not by itself, but that’s not the only variable in play. Half-frame rendering of an image with more than double the pixel count may well be a tradeoff a lot of people would be happy with.

But that’s not even the issue here — the issue is that 1080i works on all HDTVs, while 720p doesn’t. Pretty much every other HD device understands this and offers full 1080 support. The PS3 is the odd one out in this respect.

afrosheen: “I just present facts, not condolences.”

No, you just present half-truths and a lot of smarm.

  • Yes!!, I love it. Thank you for the heads up. Keep up the fantastic work.

  • JH2112,
    You are still half true.
    1080p = 1920×1080
    1080i is half of 1080p.

But there was no 1080i TVs that support natively (even plasma or projection TVs). Only 1080p tvs can support 1080i natively. Others just scale them down.

So in fact, 720p tvs are much better than 1080i tvs.
Please get the fact straight and don’t act like you know everything.

First I want to congratulate to Sony for giving us the best console experience around! You guys really care about your customers and you always try the best to make us happy! Thanks for giving us the PS3, for me it’s an amazing and wonderful “piece of high-technology”!

I agree with the following ideas expressed by the guys in this forum:

-implementing a clock in the screen you open pressing the PS button (maybe with the possibility to set an alarm)
-the xbar implemented in the gameplay
-the possibility to play divx/xvid/mov files. Add these media files and I think the PS3 will become the best home media player! C’mon, we all know that that the divx is one of the most used media files!

You’re doing a great job guys, keep it on!

  • are we supposed to have a developer interview today?

  • Sony, Can you guys please tell us that you guys are thinking about implementing custom wallpapers in the XMB? Thanks alot, great update by the way :)

  • I hope u guys can catch this Killzone_Beta guy and teach him a lesson for doing this prank

  • 1080i (interlaced) vs. 1080p (progressive).

In 1080i every cycle, only half of the 1080 lines of resolution actually refresh, the others stay the same. In 1080p all lines refresh every cycle. In 720p, although there are less lines of resolution, every cycle, all of these lines are refreshed. Making 720p better than 1080i for faster paced movies/broadcasts/videogames while 1080i has more definitions, but in faster video, you will get more aliasing aka little jaggies in your picture. and 1080p trumps them all with 1080 lines of definition AND supports fast actions alot better than interlaced formats.

  • I think Sony need to make PS3 more do anything console, unlike PS2 I had to put mod chip on it. Still what we got now fairly good. Why not let it run OpenGL games… :P Would make good workstation box too..

    Fox

  • I guess this os not the place, but the option to Shuffle play photos sure would be nice, if you have over 1,000 photos, watching the same ones every day, in the same order gets you pretty much NOWHERE ;)

  • 1080i (interlaced) vs. 1080p (progressive)

God really comes down to how much in your pocket, my 27″ can only do 1080i and it look fine. Overall we still haven’t push video definitions that far.

Look for sales on LCD TV, you can tell from 480p to 1080p. Your PS3 will thank you for HDTV.

Let see I pay $390 for my Olevia 27″ TV and get sec one half off and $100 off for PS3 20GB, I pay full price for my 60GB.

Fox, now I got LCD for my desktop :P

  • Horny, you are only half right.
1080i is NOT half of 1080p.
    1080p=whole image 1/30th second.
    1080i=1/2 image 1/60th second
The bottom part you are right, most 1080i/720p TV’s will scale down to 720p.

  • Are you guys going to do this with the PSP firmware, too? I don’t own a PS3 (yet) and I want to know if and when a PSP firmware update will be released that it will be posted up here a day or two before. Thanks.

  • Good job guys. Keep up the good work. Some good additions:
    # A clock as said earlier won’t be bad
    # *Ability to play quick time movie formats and iTUNES DOWNLOADED MUSIC. This is a must.*
    # *Improved web browser. Do you guys believe the IPHONE has a better browser than the PS3??? Guys you got to work on that. (I’ll be getting one on friday 29th) What people will do for TRUE QUALITY???
    # Support for word and pdf documents. This can be under a separate icon on the XMB, maybe named as OTHER FILES
    # *Ability to create your own playlist and photo album. THIS IS A MUST.
    # Multitasking hasn’t been fully implemented. The video menu is still still…
    # Divx/Xvid support
    # More videos and demos for the store, maybe Lair this time??
    # NOW HAS ANYONE THOUGHT OF “”VOICE ACTIVATED MENU SELECTION VIA BLUETOOTH HEADSET””” DAMN, THAT IS GONNA BE COOL. It’s all software so it is possible, Just hold down the PS button and off you go.
    # The FLICKER PROBLEm really is a mess. Fix that.
    # Plans should be made to cover E3 live somehow.
That’s enough for now. I don’t want to overload you guys.

  • Overload ahh funny…

We need to cluster PS3, 200 or 300 in data center.

There goes IBM Blue Gen supercomputers ..

    Fox

  • man if only the replies were about the features

  • Nah they need to open source PS3 then we could have all features we want..
