Firmware 1.82 Coming Soon…

562 0

Hey everyone, you told us you wanted to hear about updates a few days in advance, so here’s a quick heads up that we have a PS3 firmware update in the works. [UPDATE: it’s available today]

Firmware 1.82 is an update that enables the playback of AVC High Profile (H.264/MPEG-4) files. As most of you know, these are high quality files that you’ll now be able to play on your PS3. Hopefully this update is moving us closer to the audio playback features many of you commented about in my post the other week. We’re continuing to evaluate and improve things across the board, including PS2 software compatibility. Thanks for all of your support and feedback, keep it coming!

  • Sony r u kidding us?????? a new update with some video codecs which is good but not enough ,im still loading my ps3 with music and getting ready for the day im gonna use them as a custom soundtrax in some game which is a dream to me ..

PLZ SONY GUYS DO THE CUSTOM SOUNDTRAX THING :”(

  • Oh yea, we also want DIVX/XVID video support. For you guys asking for AVI support, it’s already there. I was watching an AVI video yesterday.

  • I registered just to say I like Sony’s new approach to its customers.

You’re stepping down from your high pedestal and finally start to talk directly to us. We like it! (Only Nintendo left now I guess :-P)

I also like how this is not just a way to print press releases, which I hope you’ll never do here. (Don’t you dare turning this into a simple PR-machine!)

I’m liking the “new Sony”. Keep it up, and don’t be afraid to open up more. Your customers will appreciate it and be more understanding and loyal.

Of course, one can only look at some of the comments in this post, to see that some people do have some issues. I’m glad that you’re facing those difficult people head on as well. I’m mighty impressed!

  • Also, just to chime in on some demands:

    # The friends list should be accessible in game.
    # You should be able to send/read messages in game.
    # You should be able to send cross game invites, i.e send a RFOM invite to someone playing Motorstorm.

I think these have higher priority than many other features, although better support for Mpeg4 is of course nice as well.

  • I agree with #244, please give us a forced “ON” option for Blu-ray 1080p24.

My TV accepts 1080p24 but fails inte the handshaking with the PS3.

  • PS3 firmware 1.82 on the way, adds AVC High Profile playback at Best-Computer-Deals.net

[…] Lempel, director of PlayStation Network Operations, posted on the company’s official blog that firmware 1.82 would be arriving on the PS3 in the next few days. The update’s sole new […]

  • It would be nice if a future firmware update could add 48p output capability in addition to 24p. Why would this be useful? Current high-end Sony TVs such as the XBR2/XBR3/X2000 series do not feature 24p input processing, but they could take 48p input without problems, thus reducing the 3:2 pulldown judder effect with BD playback.

Additionally, what is the reason for downconverting DD5.1 tracks to stereo when playing back .m2ts files from the XMB? DD5.1 plays just fine via the optical output when playing back BD disks.

  • Thanks for the constant updates. This Blog is one of the best things I have seen Sony do this generation to get closer to the gamer.

Now, since I know you [SONY] are listening, please make the XBM accessible via in game for messaging and voice chat.
A perfect example on how frustrating the current set is the fact that last night I kept having to quit playing “the Darkness” to invite/message my PSN buddies to join me in an online game.

    I hope his comes SOON.

    Keep up the great work

  • Can you make .trp and .ts files playable as well?!

  • Wow! thanks for the update!

My wish is if possible please also support rm, rmvb format playback from DNLA servers, please…

  • Thanks for the information, but why is support limited to AVC?

  • SONY!!! I HAVE A BIG PROBLEM WITH MY LEXSOR LCD HDTV!!! HERES THE LINK FOR IT

    http://www.lexsor.com/products/lc32w18s.htm

WHENEVER I START A GAME THE SCREEN FLICKERS AND MY SPEAKERS MAKE A LOUD CRACKLING NOISE. PLEASE FIX IT! THIS ALSO HAPPENS DURING GAMEPLAY ALSO JUST NOT VERY OFTEN BUT IT CAN REALLY EFFECT MY GAME IF IM PLAYIN AN ACTION GAME I.E RESISTANCE/MOTORSTORM

PLEASE SONY FIX THIS HDMI CABLE PROBLEM!! MANY PEOPLE ARE SUFFERING BECAUSE OF IT

GREAT WORK ON THE UPDATES THOUGH AND AWSOME WORK ON THE PS3 AND PSP

  • Keep up The good work

  • Good news! Now where’s Twisted Metal?!!

  • Great work! Another step in the right direction. Now here is a problem i have. When playing a PS2 game, GoW 2 mainly, if i accidently hit the PS button when flicking the left analog stick, i get the standard “quit game” pop up, but my game doesnt pause, and poor stoned Kratos usually ends up being a pile of rubble. PLEASE fix it to where the PS button actually pauses the game and doesnt just pop up an overlay. Maybe that would get fixed with the ‘in-game XMB’ access? Is this possible?? Thanks and keep up the good work!!

  • Please, in further firmrwares updates, allow us to watch Blu-ray and DVD through the RGB SCART cable, for now we can’t, the PS3 does the same thing than the PS2, when we want to watch movies it switches from RGB to YUV, resulting in an ugly “Green Screen”, unwatchable !!!

This is really stupid, we can watch movies directly through the XMB with the RGB SCART cable without any problem, but when we want to watch Blu-ray or DVD we can’t because the PS3 don’t allow the signal to stay in RGB and automatically switches it to YUV resulting in an image entirely green ! This doesn’t make any sense !

Why can we watch SD an HD movies through the XMB, and not with the Blu-ray or DVD player ???

In Europe SONY has solded millions of TV that have only RGB SCART input for the best input, and none YUV input.

All DVD players and Blu-ray players (and also HD-DVD players) in the world allow an RGB SCART output, and why the PS3 and the PS2 don’t ??

If SONY has to pay a license to allow it, then please SONY pay it, we deserve it, I have a SONY TV that cost me 4500 Euros (5996 $) two years ago, and I can’t watch your Blu-ray with my PS3, this is so stupid.

In Europe we are hundred of people that complain about that issue in forums and Hotlines, don’t ignore us, this is a real problem.

And don’t answer us to plug our PS3 with the composite cable, we have bought PS3 and SONY TV for their quality, we deserve quality.

So please, fix that problem in a next firmware.

  • Divx/Avi pleeeeeeeeeeeeease

  • This is the one thing I am really disapointed with the PS3. I should be able to use any encoding software to re encode my DVD collection in AVC H.264 format I tied to use nero which comes with a re encode app that will re encode .VOB files instead of having to buy all these other third party apps convert them to .avi just to get a movie file to work. I tried PS3 9 and it did not work all the time either but since it is freeware it will do. I have not herd of xvid4psp so I guess I will give it a shot.

  • @265

I forgot all about that, haha, good idea. It grew on me now, but my friends still do that, thinking they’re pausing the game. That would be a nice little addition to a firmware update.

I’m not sure if they are actually answering any questions in this thread, but I’ll try anyways… Any plans to be able to play games (BD or PSN) over a Remote Play connection? I remember reading it would be possible but never heard anything about it since. I would love to play some Q-Bert over Wi-Fi on my PSP, haha.

    Thanks again, great blog.

  • Now the sony can put support to RM,RMVB,DIVX and XDIVX

Sony DIVX is a free type, you can put this.

I read in a interview the sony don’t put this because this don’t have a standard. But has a type of file that many people use, maybe sony create a standard if put this file.

Or create a DLNA server that run RMVB on ps3

[…] el PlayStation Blog, Erik Lampel informa que esta semana se lanzará la nueva actualización de la consola […]

  • Excellent job, guys. They really are listening to us!

[Here’s my list of 10 things I’d like to see by Firmware version 3.0:]

    1. In-game FULL XMB access.

I want to be able to change video/audio settings while in game, full video and audio chatting and ability to play music or video even while playing any game, which also means custom soundtracks.

    2. A completely retooled PS store.

I hate to say it, but MS has you guys beat in this department. You need something that is mostly backend, that is to say, already on every PS3, with designated picture and text boxes that fill in with data that’s downloaded, rather than entire web pages that load up each time you access the store. Also take note from MS about the downloadable content access from in-game. Great idea. You don’t have to leave the game to download extra maps, game modes, etc.

    3. More bells and whistles for backwards compatibility.

What I mean by “bells and whistles” is even more enhancements like anti-aliasing and graphics filters*, smoother frame rates, and faster load times for PS1 & PS2 games by doing things like caching files on the hard drive.

So far you guys are showing excellent progress in this department with upscaling and smoothing, but adding these things would really be icing on the cake.

    4. Added rumble support for all games, new and old.

    5. Upscaling for all non-1080p PS3 games. I want to see my 720p games like Resistance, Warhawk, Motorstorm, etc. upscaled to 1080p on my TV. My Xbox 360 Elite does it with every game; and the PS3 is more powerful, so it should do it, too.

    6. The kind of video playback compatibility seen with Video Lan Client on the PC / Mac.

I’d also like to see Sony develop some sort of official Sony application (for both Macs and PCs) that allows full media streaming to my PS3.

I’d even be willing to pay for such an App if it was offered via the PS Store and if the program had video and audio codecs for all types of media (AVI, MOV, MPG, MKV, WMV, ASF, WMA, DIVX, XVID, WAV, FLV, SWF, OGG, VCD, SVCD, etc.) and worked really well. (Right now I’m forced to pay $40 for a buggy program on my mac called EyeConnect to stream only 1/10th of my videos because of all the formats my video files are in)

    7. Some sort of neat toy-like things that the Sixaxis motion controls like controlling the background in some sort of passive fun way when you are playing an MP3 or watching a slideshow.

    8. The ability to pull the music files off my PS3 games and play them in the XMB as MP3s.

Sometimes, I like listening to game soundtracks, and I feel if I can do it while in-game, why shouldn’t I be able to when I’m not playing the game?

    9. High-definition movies AND music I can buy to download on my PS3.

Here’s a real chance for you to truly 1-up Microsoft. Just give us the ability to rent OR buy a movie in 480p, 720p, or 1080p high definition with 5.1 surround sound and download it to our hard drives, and you will have them beat in that department.

Just make sure you release GOOD movies on the PS Store and give us gamers some exclusive deals like early releases for stuff like oh, say Spiderman 2 in 1080p for the first time only for permanent purchase download on the PS Store. THAT would rock. I already have it on DVD and would pay $20 just to download it in high-definition on my PS3.

    10. Last but DEFINITELY not least: give us some GOOD PS1 titles to download from the PS Store!

Where’s the legendary games like Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Resident Evil 2, and PaRappa the Rapper? Where are those rare gems that could be easily obtained if they were available via the PS store like Einhander, Tomba, Vagrant Story, Ergheiz, Omega Boost, Tobal, Brave Fencer Musashi, and Parasite Eve!? Come on Sony, it’s not hard to figure out what we want! Just take a look at eBay! Whatever PS1 games there are listed that are expensive, put THOSE on the store! No more “extreme sports” or racing games. Give us the classics and the hard to find critically acclaimed rare stuff! Maybe even give us some games we never saw in the U.S.!

Thanks to anyone who read all that.

*See here for what I mean by filters:

  • My god, a bunch of you are ungrateful. Even if this update doesn’t apply to your desires and gaming “needs” it’s still a huge feature for a lot of other people. You’re being selfish. And Sony is obviously responding to our requests and have major firmware upgrades planned for this summer, so just be patient for god’s sake. I’m sure these interim-firmware upgrades aren’t slowing down their progress any for the other features, and wouldn’t you rather they add new features weekly instead of monthly? If Sony starts getting the idea that their firmware features would have more praise and less backlash if they released it all at once with a bunch of other improvements, then they may just do that…and you may end up waiting much longer than you would’ve been had you kept your mouth shut.

I’m very happy about this news about the MPEG-4 / AVC playback. Thank you.

  • Thank you Sony for the information, keep the good work up.

    :)

  • If I could use my nero to re encode movie files and have them play on the PS3 with this update I will be happy for sure. Anything to make the PS3 better is much appreciated

  • You make very good job with all this successives firmware updates. Continue !!

But there is functions which need to be implemented in next firmware :

    – Increase PS2 compatbility (ex : Jack and Daxter : the precursor legacy don’t work)

    – DivX / Xvid / Wmf are not supported

    – Directory creation (in Photo, Music and Video of Xmb)

  • I was expecting more from the update, but oh well.

Since you mentioned more ps2 compatibility, how about enabling ps2 games that supported HDD to install on the ps3 hdd instead of just FFXI. I spent $100 dollars on that set for ps2 and it’s not right considering it was barely supported, that the games that do support it can’t have that function on ps3. Also, since BC will be moving towards software emulation, some anti-aliasing. I know PS3 is capable of doing that.

I heard as well about devs being able to use custom soundtracks, which is nice, but that’s not simply what is asked for. We want in-game XMB access. This means messaging and media from in-game, regardless of whether or not a dev supports it or not.

    Keep the updates coming!

  • By the way is there any reason that the features we want the most are not the first to be put in?

Are wallpapers that difficult to program that we could of had that day one or included in this update?

  • Great -each update is appreciated.

    Suggestion:
On blu-ray playback, when you hit “Stop”, the PS3 goes back to the XMB instead of going into a sort of pause mode, like all Sony DVD players do. while I realize there’s a pause button, old habits die hard. On discs like Pirates of the Caribbean, you then have to wait/FF through 10 minutes of previews (non-skippable) to get back to the main menu.

Please either change the stop button to go into a pause mode (complete with a Sony PS3 logo moving around the screen to avoid burn in) or make it an option.

    thanks!

  • Seem like Sony is doing good in the firmware update area, continually releasing more and more features that make the PS3 a console worth $600 dollars.

My only concern with PS3 right now is support. I do not want to invest in a machine that is losing more and more support because of financial issues with development costs. And this lack of support is coming from developers who have made PlayStation exclusives in the past, like Square Enix.

I believe Sony should start focusing on how they can help developers take full advantage of the PS3, instead of adding simple features such as these. Don’t get me wrong, they are enjoyable, but I would rather have more support from companies, than receiving minor updates such as these. I’ve always been a Sony fan, and never will stop being one. So I’m not trying to get on Sony, just speaking my opinion.

I know Sony will prevail. It’s just a matter of time and effort they put in.

  • !IMPORTANT!

While the FULL RGB option now “sticks” in the XMB since 1.81, PS2 games video output is still either forced to YUV or RGB limited although the RGB is set to FULL on the PS3.

Basically with 1.81, everything (XMB, PS1, PS3 and BD/DVD movies) can be displayed in RGB (when BD/DVD is set to RGB too, of course) except PS2 games that are still output as YUV or RGB Limited, with no options to alter that.

This is annoying because when playing a PS2 game, the brightness is way too high and the image washed out.

Also it is annoying not to have the Upscale ratio type selection in the PS menu when playing PS2 games. Are we supposed to alter the setting every time in the XMB according to the game we want to play? Annoying. The option would be much better directly accessible from the PS menu.

    So to sum-up, Sony please:
    – Make an option to change the PS2 video output to RGB FULL.
    – Add an option in the PS menu of PS2 games to alter the Upscale image ratio setting (like DVD movies have it)

    Thanks!

  • Thanks Sony keep up the updates!

  • It would be great to have 720p rendered PS1 and PS2 games, and DivX video playback

  • Thank you for the updates and the Blog for feedback, I remember trying to send recommendations though the support page and getting feedback that this is not were you do this and could not find were you would seed feedback this is a lot better now.

I would like to see a video and audio test program that would help getting the colors and audio setup correctly. The NIN music blu-ray disc had a nice one, it would be nice to have a program that you could run from the media bar to check the setup.

Also I noticed that when sending audio via the TOS cable that not getting the receiver to use the PCM uncompressed audio stream to do the 5.1 surround processing, the receiver is set to direct and not doing the DSP processing to try to simulate the 5.1.

Will need to get a new receiver to do the Dolby Digital HD or the DTS HD down the road.

  • I would agree with post 280, i have the same problem with the blu-tooth remote, I would also like to see a pause not back to the xbr, this can be annoying if you accidentally hit the button and it stops the movie.

  • Here, here about the ingame cross media bar. We need it, we need it. Well, that and AVI and DivX capabilities. To me those are most important because of the need of the average gamer to have access to everything on a console at all time.

I am a loyal fan of the PlayStation series. The average Sony product is over priced and uses its brand name to it advantage. However, I’m PlayStation all the way I will support you all. Thanks for what little you’ve done.

  • Excellent! Thank you Sony, you guys are really cleaning yourselves up, Good Luck at E3!

  • @awheaten

Can’t agree with you more buddy. Talk about name brand! Thats all it is to them. Got to give them credit though, its all quality. (Or better say most of Sony’s product). I am loyal to PlayStation though, so I’ll keep supporting Sony all the way.

  • I definitely like being informed ahead of time. Keep it coming Sony……:-)

  • now what would be REALLY neat, is if you could chat via headset with your buddies even if you wernt playing the same game! i believe xbox360 has that feature and i think that would be cool. keep up the good work sony!

  • I’m glad you’re taking media support seriously, now how about the one’s we all want.

DivX,Xvid,AVI support must be included to make the system viable as a DLNA client. Yes I can go to the hassle of converting my entire collection to MP4 however the amount of green house gas this is going to generate will be staggering!

Also can you please fix the track order when displaying albums from DLNA servers. I use Twonky and it’s all over the place if the songs have valid ID tags. Twonky are saying the problem is with the PS3 and not with them.

  • @247:

Though you feel you know much about codecs, you offer a technical solution that does nothing for anyone. AVI is not a standard, it’s a wrapper and any codec can be inside it. Great, that fixed nothing.

Adhering to standards is fun, but the real world has few. Sony needs to be smart here particularly if they’re competing with Microsoft on the whole Media Hub angle. A codec pack that let _everyone_ watch whatever they have saved via their home computers is ideal. Myself and others would be willing to pay extra if licensing fees are involved.

The media sharing connectivity was like a piece of cake and a punch in the stomach at the same time for us. Here, you can watch videos and listen to music from your computer across the network! Oh but wait, you can only watch the extremely rare mp4 encoded videos. Sorry guys.

This might all change when/if Sony starts letting us download TV shows, movies, etc. from the PS Store. Until then, expect everyone to keep asking for avi and expanded codec support. Be realistic here.

  • all I want to know is if there will be anytime soon an update that enables mac formated iPods to work properly with the PS3.

so… are you listening? will we get that?

  • A screen positioner / pincher would be nice. Not everyone has a picture snuggly bug fit on the television screen ^_^

  • I’m very happy with my PS3. These firmware updates are improving the machine to the point where I won’t need to use my Xbox 360 for media streaming from my PC anymore. All the PS3 needs is support for WMV HD video files and that’s me sorted as the reliability and quietness of the machine makes it a better home entertainment hub than my 360, that’s for sure.

Can we have a background wallpaper feature, custom soundtrack support, XMB access in games and a way of creating/sorting out photos in ways other than by month as well, please!

Thanks! Keep up the good work.

  • Sony, seriously, just add in-game XMB or give us a estimated date for it! Every time I go on the forums I see a post about it, plus the 360 launched almost 2 years ago and had it. You guys launch a year later and don’t have a standard feature! What happend to PS3 owners waiting to get the BEST experience? All we do is wait and wait and wait. 8 months in and we don’t have a feature that should have been there at launch. OMG Sony hurry up and stop being so closed about your plans!

  • I’d pay 50pennies for alternative backgrounds. Say a nice gently spinning photorealistic clock. Or a gentle flight over rolling hills. I dunno something other than what will soon become boring, floaty wavey purple thing.

Like all, access to the XMB in game would be nice, and the playing of my own music and playlists too. Though I suspect they’re down to the individual game developers. Is this true?

Yes, to whomever mentioned double tapping the PS to get the whole quit game menu. I had neary a distaster mid game when the frantic action caused me to tap it in error.

Can we have an improved internet browser? A full blooded one would be nice.

    Thanks for listening.

  • i think that sorting stuff like in game xmb, in game music, chat, message, friend list. ext’ ect’ is by far the most important things for us to receive. im not a 360 fanboy but it works really well and i was quite disapointed with my ps3 when i got it…. i automaticly expected all the 360 features but better!! what a kick in the teeth to discover that i could’nt do alot of the stuff i enjoyed doing on my 360.
im very aware that ps3 will rule in the long run but for now it is a real pain being a ps3 owner. i miss not being able to rank up on GRAW2 and fifa 07, i also miss being able to easily switch on my headset and chat away to the WHOLE WORLD. everything seemed so easy, i suppose i just expected all these things from my ps3 with it costing twice as much as my 360.
step up your game sony because all my friends who got a ps3 feel the same way as i do, some have even gone back to the 360 which you should feel very ashamed about.
