Steep and Portal Knights are your PlayStation Plus games for January

Zone of the Enders HD Collection, Amplitude & Fallen Legion also join the monthly line-up

Happy holidays, folks – we hope you’re all having a great break and enjoying some well-earned, seasonally-sanctioned down time.

With 2019 galloping over the horizon, it’s time to look at what the new year has in store – and where better to start than with PS Plus? Let’s dive into January’s line-up, available to download from 3rd January.

Steep

Tear your way across the soft white powder of some of the world’s most breath-taking mountain ranges on skis, snowboards, wing suits or paragliders in Ubisoft’s open-world, winter-sports sandbox.

Figure out the fastest way down sheer slopes and snow-capped peaks, record your runs and then share them with players around the world – including your friends – and challenge them to go one better.

Everything you do can be shared with the Steep community – from trailblazing time trails to your biggest wipe-outs. A newly added photo mode, PVP challenges (with full-contact collisions) and a brand-new Alaskan location mean that there’s more to do than ever.

Portal Knights

Keeping firmly with the theme of unique, open-world sandboxes, we come to our second big title of the month.

Portal Knights mixes time-honoured RPG mechanics with large, procedurally-generated environments and clever co-operative play to deliver a stylish action-driven adventure with big bosses to face-down, loot to collect and, yes, heaps of opportunities to get creative.

Departing with more traditional RPGs, Portal Knights proffers the possibility of reshaping the world as you see fit: build vast structures to call your own, plant some veggies or dig deep into the earth to mine for rare materials.

Anything else?

As with previous months, we’ll be adding two games each for both PS3 and PS Vita, leaving the final line-up looking like this:

All the above will be available to download on Tuesday 3rd January. Until then, you’ve got what remains of 2018 to pick up December’s line-up. Quick reminder on those:

And that’s it – we’ll be back next year to lift the lid on February’s games. In the meantime, let us know how you get on with this January’s titles over on Twitter and Facebook.

  • So Portal Knights will be a PS NOW game for next month I guess…

  • Happy about Steep and Fallen Legion. I already own Portal Knights so I’m also glad that it’s gonna get more attention. It’s actually pretty fun, especially since the last update that added placeable NPCs.

  • I might try Zone of the Enders, Amplitude and Fallen Legion, meh…

  • Again a huge let down…

  • IGC lineups like December 2018’s are good, but they are the exception. January 2019’s lineup mostly sucks. I don’t have the unrealistic expectation of Sony giving away for free games such as RDR2 and God of War, but they can do better than this.

  • I’ve been waiting since last July for something to give me a reason to resubscribe. That’s another month down. I know free games are free games, but the quality just isn’t there compared to a few years ago when we’d get stuff like the first RDR, Bioshock Infinite, Just Cause 2 and 3, MGS HD collection etc. This isn’t an entitled whinge, I just don’t think it represents value for money any more.

  • I don’t own any of these except for steep, so at least I will be trying something new.

  • Since there’s a ps4 version of Super Mutant Alien Assault, aren’t we also getting that?

  • Really!!!! Over £30 of games lol I picked up steep new on ebay for £4.99. Really poor choice of games again this month.

  • I downloaded Steep through PS Now, but I’m not sure if I’ll keep the subscription. How can I add Steep to my PS Plus ICG so that I can keep it after my PS Now subscription ends?

  • For anyone jumping into Zone of Enders for the first time… go straight to the second game!

  • If they scrape the barrel anymore they’re going to go through the bottom of it.

  • In keeping in line with the Steep theme, PS Plus is definitely heading downhill but unfortunately with no signs of ever getting back up :(

  • Next month, 20 euros in games. And the next one, 5 euros in mobile indie games!

  • the only good thing I can say about ps plus is that my subscription will eventually run out.

  • Bu kadar rezil oyunlar olmaz.play station hit oyunlari nerde.fiyat yukseltip bu ay bukadar oyun verdik demeyi biliyorlar

  • Not good month but I go try steep and maybe try Zoe of the Enders collection .

  • Didn’t “Zoe of the enders” win some awards at this years adult entertainment industry awards?

  • That’s atrocious even by recent PlayStation Plus standards. What are we getting next? Life of Black Tiger?

  • All the cry-babies, me so sad for salty tears.

You people whine and cry and all you do is make me laugh. Seriously. The guy with God of War or Red Dead 2 ?

Or Simple Jack proudly saying he got Steep on eBay for 5 quid – 5 quid more than he would’ve had to pay for it. ?

Or complaining we don’t get quality games like MGS HD or Just Cause 2 when we actually did get Phantom Pain and JC3 this year…

No value for money? When will you people understand that the games are a bonus? You pay for PS4 online. And no matter what you say, if there were no games with PSplus, you’d STILL pay for playing online. And the three people that won’t… Nobody cares about you.

Now, Steep is great. If you like winter sports games with a bit more realism and a great “authentic” (for a game) feel, you can sink hundreds of hours into Steep alone. That is value.

Portal Knights looks like Minecraft meets Trove so also possible hours of fun.

Zone of the Enders were great games but not sure dusting off the PS3 for them is worth it. The Vita games will be added as always, more stuff for on the go is always appreciated.

    So thank you :)

    • Agreed! People do my head in constantly moaning about PS Plus. The games are an added bonus. I can’t wait for the PS Plus announcement every month! I have Steep on disc so now i can trade it in and still own it digitally!

    • Totally Agree… I have plus to play on line. Games like : For Honor, Rainbow Six, Division, Battlefield, Titanfall 2, Crew, Driveclub, Call Of Duty, Ghost Recon.

Don’t get me wrong, I love games you don’t have to play on-line : God Of War, Spider Man.

Not every game, plus rolls out will suit everyone : But Sony, were the first to introduce the free games with their on-line subscription. And over the pass 8 years I have got my money back and some.

If you are a person that complains about this service, please go buy an X-Box and whine to Microsoft as you are obviously not really a person who likes to play quality games.

    • We need more people like you on earth. I am so sick of these tea-baggers

    • I agree. I saw Steep and portal knights and thought this was a great month. I play enough games to think my ps sub is worth the price even without free games. I think of it as a bonus, and love it when great games i passed up at release get to shine on the monthly showcase.

Please keep the quality up like it is this month, Sony. Good show

    • Games are not a bonus at all. They were the reason PS Plus existed ten years ago. The online paywalls came in when PS4 launched… It’s because we have to pay for online it’s only fair we should get decent titles in return, as not all of us are fans of multiplayer.

    • Here here! I really don’t know what people expect. The reality is that virtually everyone who moans every month resubscribes anyway. If you don’t think there is value for money dont buy it! It really is that simple. Kindest regards,

    • The games are a bonus? No one would be crazy enough to pay that much for online – well, no one but crazy Xbots who embraced and accepted the concept in the first place, now crossed over and are suddenly happy with a better deal introduced by Sony. But it would be even better if online remained free, ever for them as it would result in PS+ being cheaper (though I imagine by very little as online -contrary to your misconceptions – makes up a very small part of the combined cost of the PS+/online sub, this backed up by the fact that PS+ is at the same price as before PS4, when there was no supposed online cost and it was optional.

    • You know what’s more annoying than people moaning about the games? Holier than thou, pious little irritants telling other people they have no right to complain. When you pay for a service, you have every right to complain if you don’t feel it is worth the money, or if you feel that the quality seems to have steadily declined over the last couple of years.

Not only that, some of these pompous little do-gooders are either misreading or deliberately ignoring what the complainers have said. Nobody said we should be getting Red Dead 2 or God Of War. In fact, that particular commenter said the exact opposite of that. And it was me who mentioned JC 2 and 3 – and the argument that we got Phantom Pain earlier in the year is completely irrelevant. The odd good month here and there is not good enough. Microsoft are smashing it with their subscription services at the moment, yet PS+ remains poor value and PS Now barely worth mentioning alongside Gamepass.

Now stop trawling comment threads telling people what they can and cannot think, grow up, and be quiet.

    • Are you trolling or what? Just Cause 2 was given away years ago and Phantom Pain Just Cause 3 were in 2017, not “this year” (2018)

  • Ho ho ho, merry fucking christmas, really sony ?

Nice games to start a new year

  • Haven’t touched the December games, but I’m happy for Steep.

  • Both PS4 games look pretty sweet. Happy customer here.

  • Steep is great for those who have not played it. Really enjoyed that game far more than I was expecting

  • As I Tweeted (same handle as PSN name) earlier:

Keep seeing Steep in (physical) stores and considering picking it up.

So win for me on that front.

  • And the Employee of the Month award goes to….Maaden_Swe.

    • Hehe yeah that guy would defend PS+ even with I am bread as main lineup star.

    • Aside from that being a unoriginal joke, I don’t see anything wrong with what he’s doing. He’s doing the exact same thing as people complaining, just with the opposite opinion. All this negativity and complaining is ridiculous already. People just don’t seem to understand that a game can be good even if it’s not a major title. Not everyone likes MGS, GoW, CoD and so on. Just because you don’t personally like it, doesn’t make it a “bad line-up”.

And don’t get me wrong: Voice your opinion and share your thoughts. But if you do that, don’t resort to mockery or insults when someone simply voices their positive opinion.

    • So it’s okay when you whine like a baby but wrong when someone defends the line-up. Great logic mate

  • Steep is okay but I haven’t enjoyed a snowboarding game as much as I enjoyed 1080 on the n64 20 odd years ago.

  • Eh mostly stuff not for me but I will take that Vita version of Super Mutant Alien Assault since I like it on PS4 but Vita version wasn’t crossbuy so now I get it anyways. :D

  • I probably am from the small group of people that have a (+) membership for the monthly games and not for the online and I think that the plus service is ok for the money we give. I played a lot of games that I would never try in another case!

Most people that complain about the games and the 5€/month membership, probably spend 5€/day for coffee or cigarettes!!!

    • It’s about the principle. Would you like to be forced to spend your money on something you don’t want or need? That 5€/ month amounts to 350€ by 2020, and that’s just for this generation (no way they’re ever gonna let this goldmine slide, especially with how eager people seem to be to be forced to pay online as long as they get a bunch of -paid for- rentals that some random person picked out for them). If they didn’t combine online costs with PS+ (which is the least they can do since online should be free in the first place), I’d only need to pay 1€ a month for online-only, and could get 5 months worth out of a current month.

They’re disadvantaging a large part of their consumer audience in favor of the PS+ fans, so they wouldn’t need to subscribe to 2 subs- bascially they’re making the people who only want online pay extra big for PS+, so their PS+ fanboys don’t need to pay a little extra for online on top of their PS+ subscription (they’re probably worried less people would get PS+ on top of a seperate online subscription, so they let us (who only want online) take the fall by forcing it on us as a combined subscription… So instead of 50€(ps+) + extra 10€(online) for their precious PS+ fanboys, it’s 10€(online) and extra 50€(ps+) for us poor everyone else. There is no justifying this.

    • Don’t forget that ps+ price will go higher, eventually it hits uncomfortable value.

  • SSteep is a great addition, realy recommend this for those of you who doesnt already own it

  • Steep is great, but i already have it on Xbox one.

    Still a decent month.

  • Lol if I wanted a terrible online focused Ubisoft game, then I would buy other Ubisoft games this gen outside of Assassin’s Creed. Could be a lot worse though, it could have been that 8 year old phenomon Rainbow Six Whatever Its Called……….. and I mean its a game for 8 year olds. Or For Dead on Arrival, sorry I meant For Honor.

  • Basically stop combining PS+ and online costs. That would fix a lot of the injustice for those of us who only want online. We wouldn’t have to complain about games we never wanted to rent in the first place and we’d just be paying for what we use and need, as is only fair.

It’s really more important to those moneyhungry business suits that they get a bunch more unwarranted PS+ subs from online gamers at the cost of some basic respect and fair dealing towards their ENTIRE consumer audience, not just the PS+ fans who would subscribe regardless of online capabilities.

    • I somewhat agree with you. It isn’t fair for people like you who only want the online part of PS+. I don’t think most people complaining here are like you though. At least it seems like they’re mainly in it for the games.

I do think PS+ is worth the money, not for the online and online-storage only, but for the games and additional discounts.

And it’s easy to think of Sony as greedy, but in reality, what business doesn’t want and need money? So you’re also contributing to them staying where they are. Free online wouldn’t be any good for a company that can’t support their servers. (of course now it’s arguable how much they have and need, but it’s about the principle)

I get that people like you are annoyed for being forced to pay for online, but try and see other perspectives on why it helps and might be necessary. And I’m not just making excuses or defending it. I’m just trying to remind you to see the whole picture and foe you to try to be happier about what you get.

I thought I’d reply to you because your posts were well-written and different from the other typical complaints.

    • I know this was in response to a previous comment, but I’ll just reply here.

Said previous comment was wrong about RDR2 and GoW, like you said.

And yeah, people have a right to complain. But just like there’s the people that you call “irritants”, there’s people that unnecessarily go for people who don’t share their negative opinion. Both sides have annoying people.

Also, I don’t think many people’s point is that you’re not “allowed” to complain. In fact, the post you replied to didn’t mention anything about not having a right to complain. I think the point is often that people could adress their complaints better and more civilised.

By the way, you telling people, who say you have no right to complain or tell you what you can and can’t think, to be quiet is a little bit hypocritical.

    • Aside from the bit about Red Dead and God Of War my comment wasn’t aimed at any particular post. And yeah, as soon as I wrote that I realised that I’d effectively undone my own argument with that last bit :D

    • Oh, I see. I thought more parts of it were aimed at said post, since you originally sent your post as a reply to “P4NCH0theD0G”.

It’s good that you realised it and admit to it, so because of that, I feel like making sure to let you know that my reply wasn’t meant as an attack towards you. I just want to help bring some perception and positivity to this blog, especially since the PS+ posts are usually the most argued about in the comments.

I feel like both sides, “salty ranters” and “ps fanboys” often forget to consider how the opposite side feels and need a reminder to think differently, so people can speak their mind without getting insulted for it.

  • All people have the right to be offended.

  • Haha Steep is probably one of the worst games ever made. Jesus Christ.

  • Shouldnt the games be out by now? they are nowhere to be found in the store yet :/

  • Why they say games can be downloaded at 1 january ??Its 1-st now where are the games

  • I know it was a New Year’s Eve yesterday but we’re all up and sober already. Could someone please “release” those games?

    • The December games are available from 4th December until 3rd January, so we probably get the games in the 4th January…

Don’t know why the PS Blog can’t give the correct day

  • they decided not to bother because of all complaints :)

  • Guys, this is such a missed opportunity. You could have given us the games early in the morning, so that we could enjoy them still on the very last day of the Christmas break but no… instead you will deliver them late, and make sure we don’t get to enjoy them today at all. Great move!

  • My guess is it’ll be released in exactly 2 hours and 18 minutes

  • I was looking forward to trying out the vita games and here it is the second day of 2019 and no free games. :(

  • Was looking forward to giving Steep a go on my last day off but sadly not. For some reason I was able to download Portal Knights already, but it didn’t send me an email and it was like I had already bought it but I know that I haven’t.

  • Portal knighta have demo version.

  • Its 01.01, [DELETED] happened?
