Acclaimed survival sim This War of Mine: The Little Ones announced for PS4

11 bit studios brings its brilliant, harrowing game to PlayStation, with new features

Hello, Pawel Miechowski from 11 bit studios here. I’m very proud to introduce to you our latest project, something we’ve been working on for the past year and tailoring for PlayStation 4.

This is a very unusual project: a serious game made for a mature gamer; an experience that will tackle your emotions heavily. And now this very unusual project is unveiled. Ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you about This War of Mine: The Little Ones, due out on PS4 on 29th January 2016.

This War of Mine: The Little Ones explores the hardships of wartime survival as seen from an entirely new perspective; that of a child. Based on the award-winning This War of Mine, The Little Ones puts you in charge of a group of adults and children stuck in the middle of hell, trying to survive in a besieged city; struggling with lack of food, medicine and constant danger. The question is: how far will you go to make it through another day?

This experience focuses not only on the reality of enduring war, but also the fact that even in times of conflict, kids are still kids – they laugh, cry, play with toys and see the world differently. In addition to thinking about survival, you’ll have to bring back the kid in yourself to understand how to protect the little ones.

This sounds very serious, right? Because it is. Our goal as the devs was to create a mature experience in which you’re seeing war through eyes of a regular people – so not a military action, but a horrible challenge to overcome. As a group of civilians you’ll be facing extremely difficult choices that have to be made just to survive the war: what do you do when you have to sacrifice someone? What do you do when you’re starving but other survivors may have food? You’ll need to find nourishment, as well as medication, bandages and the like. When you run out of necessities, you’ll need to send one man on a mission to scavenge for any supplies. But kids are not as tough as adults – and you will be the ones taking care of them.

During the night maybe you’ll maybe find some parts that can be used to fix a toy, which children can then play with during the day – kids still need entertainment after all. But kids also sometimes need to talk to someone and feel safe, so don’t forget that as well. Kids create bonds with those who protect them and that’s also portrayed in the game.

Again, very serious right? We’ve had this idea from the very beginning of the development of This War of Mine but we were worried that people may not have been ready for such a serious game. Perhaps even quite a shocking one. But the reception of the game was brilliant – we got tons of positive feedback and acknowledgement for showing war as it was. So the next big step was expanding it by bringing kids to This War of Mine. Now, you’ll be able to experience it on PlayStation 4 in This War of Mine: The Little Ones.

The main philosophy behind this project is to portray emotions of people surviving a siege of a city. That also requires picturing emotions of kids – that means not only sadness, but laughter, excitement, and a bit of craziness despite the surroundings. Their active imaginations are also being portrayed, for example you’ll see children even drawing on the walls of the shelter. We feel that the spectrum of the emotions your civilians will make you experience has now broadened greatly – because, in war kids are still kids – and that’s how one could underline This War of Mine: The Little Ones.

And since we’re on PlayStation Blog, here there’s another piece of news we think you’ll be glad to hear – the PlayStation 4 edition of This War of Mine: The Little Ones will actually contain an exclusive extra shelter known as the “Large Mansion”.

The daytime phase of the game takes place in your shelter and this is where you’ll be caring for survivors and making the tough decisions – so factors like how the building is shaped, how many floors it has, how well it’s fortified and prepared as a potential hideout all have a huge influence over the gameplay itself.

As a result PlayStation 4 players are going to be getting a unique experience here with this new shelter being a part of the game (although you can of course still play in the original shelters too). We’ve spent tons of time in building up this new shelter in the game, spent an enormous amount of time playtesting it and we can’t wait for you guys to be able to check it out.

Ready for a serious game? I hope so, and if you have any questions, I’ll be ready to answer these in the comment section.

  • It looks good, please consider a Vita version!

    • the Vita i dead its time to wake up Vita owners. Sony barely support the PS4 and that is console is actually making them money so why would you expect them to support the Vita which is a flop.

anyway to the dev is this getting a retail release?

    • I understand if you fill the vita is dead but for many its far from dead. It got many more games schedule for release than the ps4 . if the war of mine would be a great adiction to the vita library? Yes. If i think the vitas dead? No :)

    • @spacedelete2 there’s nothing dead about the Vita – it’s thriving in Japan, and new games are announced almost every day. There’s a decent line up coming between now and the end of the year and more coming in 2017.

OK, so we’re not getting any content from Sony and nothing from the larger western publishers, but that’s not the sole measure of how vibrant a console is.

What’s coming may not suit your tastes, but is unwarranted and inaccurate negativity like yours which makes the wider public believe that to be the case.

    • I’m sorry this game sounds too complex for the vita. So many variables at play I can’t see it running well on that handheld

    • @Mcbeanstr

The game is on Android and iOS too…

    • I’d rather play this on Vita too.

  • Very happy to see This War of Mine coming to PS4! Day one for me :)

  • Excellent news. You’ve got yourself a sale!

  • Saw this last year and was quite taken with it, pleased it’s coming to PS4, definitely be picking this up. :)

  • Well on this! Another game to scratch off the Steam wishlist and get on my PS4 instead… +1 for a Vita version!

  • I’ve heard so many great things about This War of Mine. It it said to be the best and most realistic war game since Spec Ops The Line. Day 1 for me.

Yes. And expanding the experience by bringing kids adds a lot emotional value. Now, the kids laugh, cry, play with toys, run around, they’re basically kids – and they create bonds with those who protect them. So the perspective of war in The Little Ones is not only as seen by regular people, but also as seen by children. I’d definitely say this is a very serious game.

    • @Pawel Miechowski

Major parts of all wars in history is how the common people live away from the battlefields. The child perspective is something we don’t often consider. I’m glad you’re tackling such a serious subject.

Thank you for bringing your game to PlayStation players!

@Gogata7 Much appreciated. It was a tough decision but the response is fantastic!

  • Awesome trailer.

  • Oh my. Just using the offspring as the song for the trailer makes me feel the “feels” this game is going to hit them hard. I can’t wait! this and the tomorrow children is what I’m looking forward to!

  • Particularly after seeing how great This War of Mine plays on my iPad Mini, I’d certainly double dip for a Vita version! PS4? Nah, I prefer handheld. Utterly enthralling game though!

  • I’ve been playing this a lot on iPad.Any chance of a Vita version, works great with touch screen.

    • Paweł Miechowski

So far we’re completely focused on PS4, so anything around Vita, if and when – it’s a future question. But what you’ll see on the console is a very compelling experience, not enjoyable, but engaging and emotional.

  • I’m not completely clear how this relates to the original This War of Mine – is this the same game plus extra material, is it a sequel, something else?

  • Paweł Miechowski

Basically, this is largely expanded experience, now you play not only adult civilians, but also kids, who may craft toys, learn things from protectors, they need to play, have fun, but they’re also kids who cry easily, need to be safe, they create bonds with adults. Much of TWoM is about emotions of people – and in The Little Ones it’s also about relations between people and kids’ emotions. Still, this (I believe) truly says about war. Sometimes it’s hard survival, sometimes you have to fight, steal weapons, but sometimes you need to hug a kid and give him / her a smile.

Imagine you’re in war. And now imagine you’re in war with your family and kids and you need to protect them – this is TWoM: The Little Ones, truly serious game. (also, exclusively there’s a new shelter for PS4 edition)

  • God damnit, all the yes in the world! Was hoping for this to happen!

  • Thank you for bringing this game to PS4. I heard great things about it. Looking forward to play it.

  • Good music choice, Offspring rulez. It was one of the first bands i ever heard when i ws little good complement in the video. For the game day oneee , hope theres a vita version too

  • This looks absolutely amazing. I’ll buy it on release date.

  • It’s nice to see this on PS4. I remember hearing about it before but it was only on PC at the time.

  • Can’t say I’ve come across this game before but I really do like the look and sound of it. Would definitely buy on PS4 and PS Vita if a version was brought out for that somewhere along the line.

  • I already supported this game on PC but will happily again on PS4. One of the most meaningful games to be released of late guys.

Specific question for release, will it have the scenario editor that was added in an update post launch? Just curious.

  • WOW, great news! Always wanted to play “This War of Mine”, very happy to see the game coming to PS4. Thank you so much!

  • This game actually looks like something we -need- to play rather then should, what a work of art!

  • whats the point of a trailer that as no ingame footage

  • the developer should really consider the vita version. it will look great on ps vita .
