Upgraded PSSR upscaler is coming to PS5 Pro

Resident Evil Requiem, launching today, is the first title to use this more advanced PSSR.

Today, we’re excited to announce that an upgraded version of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) will be rolling out globally to PS5 Pro players in the coming weeks. PSSR is an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them, and it’s been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 titles on PS5 Pro to date.

We’ve been hard at work on a new version of PSSR, which takes a very different approach to not only the neural network but also the overall algorithm. We are happy to share that Resident Evil Requiem – shipping today – is the first title to use this more advanced PSSR, which is helping to keep both frame rate and image quality high. Here’s Masaru Ijuin from Capcom who shares insight on the upgraded version of PSSR for the game:

“With Resident Evil Requiem, we focused on enhancing the presentation quality of the protagonist through an upgraded version of RE Engine to deepen the player’s immersion in horror. For example, each individual strand of hair and beard is rendered as a polygon, allowing it to move realistically in response to body motion and wind. The way light passes through his hair changes depending on how the strands of hair are overlapped as well. This detailed expression of texture is one of the many details that we would especially love for our fans to see.

The upgraded PSSR has allowed us to elevate our expressiveness by successfully processing these details and textural particularities, which are traditionally difficult to upscale because of their intricacy. We hope you will experience this unprecedented level of horror and visual fidelity, and the new gameplay feel it delivers.”

Resident Evil Requiem featuring original PSSR upscaling

Resident Evil Requiem featuring new PSSR upscaling

The algorithm and neural network used in the new PSSR stem from our Project Amethyst partnership with AMD. Through AMD’s FSR 4 upscaling technology, PC gamers have already seen the benefits of our collaboration. With the updated PSSR, we’re delivering the very latest of this co-developed technology with a further six months of refinement for PS5 Pro players.

We look forward to more news in March, when multiple existing games upgrade to the improved PSSR. There will also be a system software update at that time; selecting “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” in Settings on PS5 Pro will allow you to experience the new PSSR with any PS5 Pro games that currently support PSSR! Once the system update releases next month, try it and see, some games may have noticeably crisper graphics.

Stay tuned for more updates next month!

  • Will it be available only for PS5Pro or the PS5 as well (atleast at a later date)?

  • Release now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CANT WAIT!!!!!!!!!! ;-)

  • Let’s hope for PSVR2 support through this amazing tech ❤️ I’m so proud to be part of this stunning community on PS5 pro 🎉

  • Please find below a proposal for a global PlayStation celebration event titled PlayStation’s Odyssey: A Journey Through Time. I sincerely appreciate your time and consideration in reviewing this concept.

    PlayStation Team,

My name is Robert Baldock Jr., and I have grown up with PlayStation. Some of my earliest gaming memories are connected to the original PlayStation — the startup sound, the feel of the controller, and the sense that something distinct had arrived. From PS1 to PS2, from PSP to PS3, and from PS4 to PS5, each generation marked a different stage in my life and helped shape how I experienced storytelling, creativity, and connection. PlayStation was not simply where I played; it has been a consistent presence throughout my growth and development, and a meaningful part of the experiences that defined my generation.

As Sony Interactive Entertainment approaches its 10-year anniversary, I believe there is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to honor not only this milestone, but the shared history between PlayStation, its studios, and the global community that has grown alongside it.

I would like to propose PlayStation’s Odyssey: A Journey Through Time — a global celebration held simultaneously across each Sony Interactive headquarters, honoring every era of PlayStation before introducing the next. Not as a standard showcase, but as a unified moment that reflects the identity, loyalty, and cultural impact of the brand.

Odyssey would unfold chronologically, recognizing the evolution of the platform through its defining generations. The event would be structured into dedicated three-day segments for each era, allowing every generation of PlayStation to be given the depth, focus, and respect it deserves. The foundation years of PS1 and PS2, where PlayStation established its voice and reshaped the industry. The expansion era of PSP and PS3, marked by portability, online identity, and creative risk. The reinvention and dominance of PS4 and PS VR, where narrative ambition and hardware design matured into cultural leadership. And the present era of PS5, PS Portal, and PS VR2 — confident, innovative, and globally influential.

Along the way, Odyssey would acknowledge the studios that built this legacy with the players. Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Santa Monica Studio, Sucker Punch, Rockstar, Activision, and others whose ambition elevated the platform. Their characters evolved as their audience evolved. Their risks shaped generations. The relationship between PlayStation and its studios has always been foundational to the brand’s identity, and that shared growth deserves recognition.

A dedicated Hardware Hall of Fame would celebrate PlayStation’s limited-edition console history across all generations. From rare regional PS1 color variants and specialty PS2 releases, to distinctive metallic and franchise-branded PSP editions such as Monster Hunter and Final Fantasy models, to signature PS3 consoles including God of War III and Final Fantasy XIII editions, to era-defining PS4 hardware such as Star Wars, Destiny, Black Ops III, Spider-Man, and Ghost of Tsushima editions, and through PS5’s continued evolution of collectible and anniversary designs. This exhibition would represent the full artistic lineage of PlayStation hardware — not one generation, but the complete evolution of design identity over time. These consoles were not simply products; they were cultural statements — moments where hardware reflected creativity.

What would distinguish Odyssey is that it would not be confined to a single location. Held simultaneously across Sony Interactive Entertainment’s global headquarters — San Mateo, California (Global & Americas); Minato, Tokyo (Japan & Asia); and London, England (Europe) — the event would represent a unified moment across the core regions that define PlayStation’s global leadership. In addition, coordinated participation from regional branches including Sydney (Sony Interactive Entertainment Australia Pty. Ltd.), Seoul (Sony Interactive Entertainment Korea), Singapore (Sony Interactive Entertainment Singapore), Taipei (Sony Interactive Entertainment Taiwan), Shanghai (Sony Interactive Entertainment Shanghai), and Hong Kong (Sony Interactive Entertainment Hong Kong) would extend the celebration even further. This structure would create a truly global experience — unified across regions and cultures. A coordinated celebration of PlayStation’s legacy and its next era, bringing the global PlayStation community together at the same time, across every region.

Following this retrospective celebration, Odyssey would transition into the next decade with a unified reveal of PlayStation 6, a next-generation portable system serving as a true successor to PSP and PS Vita, and the next evolution of PlayStation VR. Presented together as a cohesive ecosystem — home, portable, and immersive — this reveal would connect the brand’s legacy to its future. Signature limited-edition PS6 hardware designs would continue the artistic lineage showcased throughout the event, reinforcing continuity rather than reset.

PlayStation has always been more than a hardware cycle. It has been identity, loyalty, and a lasting connection to worlds and characters that stay with players long after the console powers down. PlayStation’s Odyssey offers an opportunity to honor that connection while confidently setting the tone for the decade ahead.

Thank you again for your time and consideration.

    Sincerely,

    Robert Baldock Jr.

  • Fantastic news. The results look excellent.

  • Even if it’s paid DLC I would immediately get RE9 for PSVR2 with PSSR 2 upscaling!

  • Can’t wait to try Ratchet and Clank and GT7. Not to mention Spider-Man 2. Thank you, Sony. You rock <3

  • Gracias por tanto Mark Cerny, te amo.

  • Excellent now how about making the Ps5 Pro UI more stable & less laggy???

  • Excellent now how about making the Ps5 Pro UI more stable & less laggy???

  • When will this update officially launch? Also, what will this mean for other games? Also, will the visuals of PS4 games see any benefit from this? Can’t wait to see what other titles will benefit from this as well.

  • Do you still need the update in march to play pssr2 on requim? surely if it was built into the game you need the console updated to play the new tech?

  • Okay, I ended up buying RE9 day 1 (after pre order ended) it was the news of the pssr2.0 and wow it is amazing. But guys, do the PSVR2 mod now, the modders on pcvr have apparently done it in 1 day and they’ve done a good job! The immersion this time around would blow RE7 and REVillage/4 out of the water… do it before GTA6 comes and takes over everything!

  • As a PS5 Pro owner, I’m thrilled to see this new PSSR update is coming soon!

  • Why I haven’t received it yet on my PS5 pro!? The last update was on Jan 12/26.

  • Thanks for bringing back singleplayer exclusives, big thanks!! I really was thinking about going to steam 100%, but now I have a reason to continue :)

  • I honestly think at this juncture; what is the point? All the games you release are reboots, remasters and such, wasting the power we have at our disposal.

Honestly Sony, what are you playing at?
    You’re losing us all.

  • So is it system wide or per game settings?

  • Looks really good! Since you’ve improved it so much for upscaling, how about upscaling PS4 titles as well? Even if a small push. It would be awesome to see some older titles like Bloodborne or Driveclub running on a higher resolution.

  • Нормально так, посмотрим

  • When this update?

  • Thank you Mark Cerny and the team at AMD and Playstation developing PSSR. It’s truly has been game changing in the console space.

  • Where is the PSSR support on PSVR2 we we promised?

  • An updated version of PSSR and true PlayStation exclusive games! Now that sounds like a deal.

  • Why is PSSR 2 locked behind a paywall? I don’t want to have to buy Resident Evil 9 to get it.

  • Seriously though….WHY cant we just have a date? I want to plan a day off work cmon man

  • Can’t wait to see it in action. Also love the ps5 pro its a great hardware your team made

  • GREAT! It’s time to bring back value to PlayStation. Be more like Nintendo! Exclusives, Cool games, stories, combat and mechanics that cannot be found on any other platform. Utilize the haptics more, more than just a gimmick.

  • Thank you Sony and Mark Cerny, to push the improved PSSR also to existing games. This makes such a huge delta, turning a minor single title announcement into a major announcement. Your commitment to image quality is pushing the envelope! There’s several titles (like Jedi Survivor) that I can’t wait to try with the new upscaler. Thank you!

  • What day is the pssr update coming out cuase it’s still not released

  • Bring back Only on PlayStation! Thank you for a amazing generation PlayStation, and for making Astro Bot! Keep cooking up.

  • This is so awesome! The future of PlayStation is absolute 🔥 Thanks to everyone involved in this project

  • When? I’ve been waiting. North East coast America. Waiting and waiting. Beat RE9 twice already.

  • Majorly appreciate of your work, Mark. Thank you for your ongoing dedication to the hardware show at SIE.

  • Cant wait to use this upscaler ❤️🙂

  • The Silent Hill 2 remake is one of the first games that need to be tested after this rolls out. It’s a great game but there are some serious shimmering issues with PSSR there that they’ve never adequately addressed.

  • RE9 on the PS5 Pro is a showcase for the PS5 PRO and PSSR 2.0,its amazing!

  • Hi PlayStation I heard about the PlayStation six it’s not just the performance we need the more frame rates when online when it drops is a shame we didn’t have our own graphics cards slot, small enough to fit into PlayStation buy on PlayStation but it’s hard for what space we have inside since we’re turning between console and a PC

  • When you lower the price and include a disc drive. I’ll consider upgrading my day 1 launch ps5. I don’t do digital only stuff. I’m all about physical games to add to my library.
Also DON’T bring release the PS6 anytime soon. It also needs to be different, the ps5/pro are powerful enough there is no need for just another minor upgrade or it won’t sell. You need to offer a different type of gaming experience, you know?

  • As someone who was lucky enough to grab the first gen ps5 at drop, having this option not available is why steam will be getting my money from now on.

  • I look forward to trying this new PSSR 2.0 in games like Stellar Blade and RE Requiem!

  • Why are you withholding the release date from your users and costumers?

  • Still waiting for this pssr 2.0

  • Still waiting for PSSR 2.0

  • March 14, we still don’t know when this update is releasing

  • The PSSR could’ve been added to “non-profesional” PS5 and improve the SDK for developers to use it. 👀

But no, the decision to give it to “Pro” as a sales point looks like marketing and not tech limitation. The PS5 is really capable piece of hardware enough to work with a version of PSSR and not old unbearable FSR or other algorithms.😒
