The PlayStation Portal remote player experience to evolve with new system update

PlayStation Plus Premium members will have access to test Cloud Streaming (Beta) for select PS5 games on Game Catalog.

Just over a year ago, we launched our first dedicated remote play device, PlayStation Portal remote player, with an aspiration to deliver a console-quality gaming experience on a handheld device. PS Portal was an ambitious product for us, and we have been delighted by the positive response from our fans and to see that our vision has resonated with the community.

Today we’re pleased to announce a new system software update for PS Portal that will begin releasing starting later today (Europe release begins Wednesday), which will introduce refinements in the audio experience, including:

  • Speaker audio output adjustment to make the volume lower when the audio level is set to minimum
  • You will now be able to adjust settings of your PlayStation Link device from the PS Portal Settings menu, allowing you to optimize the volume and sidetone volume.

This update will also include a beta version of a new feature that many fans have been asking for – support for cloud streaming on PS Portal. When the update is live, PlayStation Plus Premium members will be able to participate in a beta for cloud streaming on PS Portal, allowing select PS5 games in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog* to be streamed directly from our servers, even without a PS5 console.

Since Cloud Streaming (Beta) on PS Portal is still an experimental offering, the features available during the beta period may change over time and may not reflect the final experience.

Let’s take a deeper look at what you can expect in this beta:

Features available during the Beta

  • Stream select PS5 games in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog
    • Over 120 PS5 games from the PS Plus Game Catalog, including Dave the Diver, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, will be accessible on PS Portal via cloud streaming*
  • Streaming up to 1080p/60fps**
  • DualSense wireless controller features, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, speakers, touchpad (emulated on the touch screen for PS Portal), and motion sensor***
  • PlayStation Plus Cloud storage
    • Save data and game progress can be stored up to 100GB and will be automatically synced with your PS5 console, making it easy to switch seamlessly between local and streaming gameplay, and between multiple devices.

Cloud Streaming (Beta) for PS Portal will be available through the PlayStation Plus Premium plan, which is offered in the following locations:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and United States.

How to access Cloud Streaming (Beta)

To access the beta, you will need the following:

  • PlayStation Portal remote player
  • An account for PlayStation Network****
  • An active PlayStation Plus Premium membership
  • Access to broadband internet Wi-Fi
  • To establish a cloud streaming session: requires minimum 5Mbps of upload and download speeds
  • To stream at 720p: requires minimum 7 Mbps
  • To stream at 1080p: requires minimum 13 Mbps

Once the beta is available, you can access the beta by updating your PS Portal to the latest system software and completing the following steps:

  1. Open “Quick Menu” and access “Settings” on your PS Portal.
  2. Select the “Cloud Streaming (Beta)” button
  3. Switch the Cloud Streaming (Beta) toggle on (this will be off by default).

After you’ve enabled Cloud Streaming (Beta) in the settings menu, you should see a new option on the Home screen of your PS Portal that allows you to access games via cloud streaming. The beta option can be turned off any time, and your Home screen will revert back to the standard version once the option is turned off.

Features not included in the Beta

As we are in the beginning stages of publicly testing cloud streaming on PS Portal, some features will not be available, such as Game Trials, streaming games purchased on PS Store, system features such as Party voice chat and game invites for select games, Create button, 3D audio, and in-game commerce.

Additionally, the streaming games playable on PS Portal are limited to PS5 games, and PS4 games/PS3 games are not supported.

We are always listening to your feedback, and we look forward to seeing many players participating in the beta!

  • Please also update the remote app.
Adding a Premium sub for another year this year.

  • Of course Australia misses out on cloud gaming. Thanks Sony it’s not like we pay good money for PlayStation products. What is the reason for having tons of countries but not Australia?

  • Why isn’t the beta available in Australia. We pay just as much for premium, probably more then all the other countries listed in the beta

  • What about Australia though I mean it’s pretty slack that almost 3/4s of the world gets it but Australia is left of the list its almost enough for me to meet the portal out the window.

  • Why do you guys hate Brasil so much? We never get any Sony’s streaming services. XCloud is here and has been for the longest time. So we can honestly say that infrastructure is not the issue

  • It’s about time. Xbox have been doing this for ages. Come on Sony you need to make up ground on cloud gaming.

    • PlayStation has had cloud gaming for years. They actually have a higher quality experience than what Xbox has been doing. I have seen plenty of comparison videos on it. Where have you been. I know where I have been though, not using cloud gaming because it’s a horrible experience from every company doing it.

  • Wow PlayStation store! The new PlayStation portal remote is so amazing and the look is cool👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😎😎😎🤩🤩🤩

  • Essential plus customers who’ve been around forever should have access

  • This revolutionary!!!!!
This will now be the best PS handheld ever .
So it does need want it is explained in the section saying what it won’t have . Using our games streaming is a must and if this portable console can have the voice communication while streaming is the goal for all gamers that have this. When the Portal two comes out there should be a way to do streaming in VR as well. It at that point will give competitors a run for thei4 money. The PS6 is a system people already talking about but it shouldn’t have a need to come out anytime soon I would think 2030 it should come out at its earliest. The games take long to make and this will alow developers to finish their work since we as the gamer want it that way. No one will want to eat unfinished food so why put out unfinished games like CONCORD in which I have a disc I can’t even used and I was enjoying the game but since the “numbers” wasn’t to the liking of Sony they canceled a game that I enjoyed ….. #finishthefames.

  • Please add
    Fortnite
    and Sea Of Thieves
    on cloud streaming!!!!

  • Dear Sony Interactive Entertainment Team,

I hope this letter finds you well. As a long-time PlayStation enthusiast, I want to commend you on the release of the PlayStation Portal. This innovative device has demonstrated Sony’s dedication to redefining the handheld gaming experience, proving how remote play can seamlessly extend the console experience beyond traditional boundaries.

The positive reception of the PlayStation Portal highlights a growing demand for portable gaming solutions. However, the Portal’s reliance on remote play leaves many of us longing for a device that stands as a fully dedicated portable console. This is where the potential for a PlayStation Portable 2 (PSP 2) could truly resonate with gamers worldwide.

    The Market Opportunity
Portable gaming devices like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally have shown that there is a strong market for high-performance handheld consoles that cater to both casual and hardcore gamers. These devices offer:

Robust Hardware: Equipped with high-resolution displays (120Hz refresh rates), powerful processors like AMD Ryzen Z1 or custom APUs, and expandable storage options.
Flexibility: The ability to run native games, PC game libraries, and provide online connectivity.
Portability Meets Power: A dedicated console that merges portability with the ability to deliver AAA gaming experiences.
Sony could tap into this growing demand while leveraging its established game library, ecosystem, and global fan base.

Recommended Specifications for a PSP 2
Here are some proposed features that could ensure the PSP 2 stands out:

Processor & GPU: A custom AMD APU tailored for energy efficiency and high performance, capable of running games at 1080p and 60fps or higher.
Display: A 7-8 inch OLED display with 1080p resolution and up to 120Hz refresh rate.
5G & Wi-Fi 6 Support: For seamless remote play, online multiplayer, and streaming services on the go.
Native Gaming Library: Capability to run PS4/PS5 games natively with support for PlayStation Store downloads.
Battery Life: At least 6-8 hours of gaming performance per charge, with fast-charging technology.
Expandable Storage: Support for microSD cards to ensure gamers can carry their entire library.
Design: An ergonomic, lightweight design inspired by the DualSense controller for comfort and immersive gameplay.
    The Role of 5G Connectivity
With advancements in 5G technology, a PSP 2 could redefine online gameplay. It would enable faster data speeds, lower latency, and greater stability during remote play or competitive multiplayer gaming, even while on the move. This would align perfectly with the demands of modern gamers who value flexibility without compromising quality.

    Conclusion
The PlayStation brand is synonymous with innovation and quality. A PlayStation Portable 2 that combines the power of the PS5 with the portability of a modern handheld would not only meet the demands of the current market but also set new benchmarks for handheld gaming. Sony’s existing strengths in software, hardware, and services create an ideal foundation for the success of such a product.

Thank you for considering this feedback and for continuing to provide extraordinary gaming experiences. I, along with countless fans, look forward to seeing what the future holds for portable gaming under the PlayStation brand.

    Sincerely,
    Playstation Fanboy

  • Would be great if people could get approximate timeline by when other countries will get cloud streaming Beta’s. Especially for India , Australia & New Zealand

  • Include Australia and i’ll buy one.

  • When will cloud streaming be available in Australia?

  • Why has Australia dipped out on this? Will we be getting the update after the Beta?

  • Hi! This is great news. When will cloud streaming and ps plus premium be available in South Africa?

  • Coolest little machine to come out in a good long time. I purchased one for the great price as I do not have a ps5 and cause you could now stream. Highly reccomend and looking forward to future updates allowing to do even more!!

  • Greeting everyone!

I spend a lot of time searching in the comment section and online and I still can’t figure it out – Would I be able to play PS5 games on the Portable Remote Player (of course, when subscribe to PS+ Platinum) without owning PS5 console? Can somebody provide clear and underatandable answer, please? It is very unclear what Sony are trying to communicate…

  • I wish there was a way to switch back and forth from streaming to remote play with out hitting the reset button every time

  • Good update but it would be great if you could play purchased games from the PlayStation store without leaving you PS5 on rest mode. I mean we did pay for these games already anyway, might as well make those available to us anywhere on the go. And I only say that because it’s not always a smooth process to connect to the ps5 at hotels. But I’m glad they’re trying out new things.

  • Would buy it in a heartbeat if it would get video streaming apps. OR would be allowed to stream from the Playstation itself. Why leave this critical feature out?

  • Can we just get a handheld that can locally play PS5 and other generation games instead of streaming? Please make games with multiple graphics settings the user can control from the start to allow them to work with handheld PlayStation consoles and future more powerful PlayStation consoles to their fullest extent.

  • When is cloud gaming coming to South Africa??

  • Please help me, I bought the PS Portal and paid for PS Plus Premium with the intention of playing games from the Cloud. Unfortunately, when I turn it on, only the blue circle lights up and finally the error “something is wrong” pops up. Please advise.

  • I was living in the US when I opened my PSN account but now I’m back in Argentina. I upgraded to premium to enjoy cloud streaming in my portal only to discover it doesn’t work if you’re not in a country where this service is supported, no matter where your account is from. It makes sense of course, but Sony should work on it since one of the selling points of cloud streaming is playing on the go and it would definitely suck for people who travel to foreign countries where this service is not supported.

  • This is the best thing they done finally they allowed to play games without ps5 on or anything. I wish it just gets better and better I just bought mine today because I found out they done this update and its amazing I can’t wait till they allow any games to be played on there without a ps5 on I want to be able to download any game and play anywhere like psp and ps vita I’ve always been it love with they plays thank you so much for this update been waiting for something like this for ages now

  • I hope you lot work on this ps portal even more and looking forward to newer updates.

  • Please look for a Special Attention to Brazilian people, since Ps Now we don’t have Streaming service. And we are a 4th Market Share Worldwide

  • This does not include countries in Africa and if we could have gotten that sub I would have bought the ps portal with a smile

  • Are they planning to allow us to play games that we have bought on our ps5 / ps4 without it being on for instance my ps5 is off and i want to play play palworlds or sum can i play it from my portal without having to go back n turn my ps5 on

  • It would just be dope to be able to play all of your purchased games from your library on the p4 and p5 from your portal dircetly without the use of the ps5

  • We can never participate in anything that is beta. Here in Brazil we have to wait so much. Even if they include us, the Premium version does not exist here. Hope everything goes well with this new update

  • Ciao a tutti ho appena acquistato una psportal. Ho fatto l’abbonamento premium ma ogni volta che provo ad avviare un gioco mi dà un errore: si è verificato un errore. Ed il gioco non parte. Non ho una ps5

  • Still not a handheld and remote play is still worse than a ps vita

  • When can we expect cloud streaming beta available worldwide, especially India?
I checked many resources nobody have a answer or ETA.

  • When will we be able to stream from PS5 Pro servers?

  • This is amazing. lets get fortnite on there!

  • I’d really like to be able to access and play my Vita games on the Portal and have access to buy new Vita games as well. There’s some great Vita only games with touch controls that would work really well on the Portal.

  • Please add PS3 games. My PS3 died many years ago and I still enjoy those games via the cloud streaming. Thanks!

  • Thank you for this upgrade – I have now upgrade my PS Plus to Premium and playing Ghost of Tushima, a game I would not have explored otherwise.

  • Will we be able to download a game to the portal that we can play without Wi-Fi?
If not is that a future possibility?

  • I m from India and I want to buy the PS portal and want to play Cloud gaming beta.

But my country isn’t in the list of update of ps portal

Can anyone tell me … When it will be released in India

  • I just want to play Madden/College25 online 🫶🏽 can’t wait for future updates !

  • I STRONGLY RECOMMEND NOBODY PURCHASE THIS CONSOLE. COMPLETE GARBAGE!!! IT WILL MORE THAN LIKELY STOP WORKING WITHIN A CALENDAR YEAR AND @sony @playstation is going to force you to repair it and it will happen AGAIN!! I strongly recommend you save yourself time and money get yourself A SWITCH OR XBOX!!!!

  • Im so excited for this! I bought a playstation portal for this update! And it runs flawlessly, I hope soon we can choose more and more games please!!

  • My Portal was unplayable because of lag. I bought a 15M Ethernet cable to plug my PS5 into the router and it now plays perfect.

  • Anyone else have a fault with TombRaider on the portal. I go to the game and it asks for me to press touchscreen pad to enter game. I touch screen as requested but nothing happens for me, the game won’t load and appears that nothing happens at this stage, the only actions I can do is to leave the game at this point. Any help appreciated. Thank you

  • Would be great if on the next update we could play our purchased games from our PS5 on the stream feature … please!!!!
