The PlayStation Portal remote player experience to evolve with new system update

PlayStation Plus Premium members will have access to test Cloud Streaming (Beta) for select PS5 games on Game Catalog.

Just over a year ago, we launched our first dedicated remote play device, PlayStation Portal remote player, with an aspiration to deliver a console-quality gaming experience on a handheld device. PS Portal was an ambitious product for us, and we have been delighted by the positive response from our fans and to see that our vision has resonated with the community.

Today we’re pleased to announce a new system software update for PS Portal that will begin releasing starting later today (Europe release begins Wednesday), which will introduce refinements in the audio experience, including:

  • Speaker audio output adjustment to make the volume lower when the audio level is set to minimum
  • You will now be able to adjust settings of your PlayStation Link device from the PS Portal Settings menu, allowing you to optimize the volume and sidetone volume.

This update will also include a beta version of a new feature that many fans have been asking for – support for cloud streaming on PS Portal. When the update is live, PlayStation Plus Premium members will be able to participate in a beta for cloud streaming on PS Portal, allowing select PS5 games in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog* to be streamed directly from our servers, even without a PS5 console.

Since Cloud Streaming (Beta) on PS Portal is still an experimental offering, the features available during the beta period may change over time and may not reflect the final experience.

Let’s take a deeper look at what you can expect in this beta:

Features available during the Beta

  • Stream select PS5 games in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog
    • Over 120 PS5 games from the PS Plus Game Catalog, including Dave the Diver, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, will be accessible on PS Portal via cloud streaming*
  • Streaming up to 1080p/60fps**
  • DualSense wireless controller features, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, speakers, touchpad (emulated on the touch screen for PS Portal), and motion sensor***
  • PlayStation Plus Cloud storage
    • Save data and game progress can be stored up to 100GB and will be automatically synced with your PS5 console, making it easy to switch seamlessly between local and streaming gameplay, and between multiple devices.

Cloud Streaming (Beta) for PS Portal will be available through the PlayStation Plus Premium plan, which is offered in the following locations:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and United States.

How to access Cloud Streaming (Beta)

To access the beta, you will need the following:

  • PlayStation Portal remote player
  • An account for PlayStation Network****
  • An active PlayStation Plus Premium membership
  • Access to broadband internet Wi-Fi
  • To establish a cloud streaming session: requires minimum 5Mbps of upload and download speeds
  • To stream at 720p: requires minimum 7 Mbps
  • To stream at 1080p: requires minimum 13 Mbps

Once the beta is available, you can access the beta by updating your PS Portal to the latest system software and completing the following steps:

  1. Open “Quick Menu” and access “Settings” on your PS Portal.
  2. Select the “Cloud Streaming (Beta)” button
  3. Switch the Cloud Streaming (Beta) toggle on (this will be off by default).

After you’ve enabled Cloud Streaming (Beta) in the settings menu, you should see a new option on the Home screen of your PS Portal that allows you to access games via cloud streaming. The beta option can be turned off any time, and your Home screen will revert back to the standard version once the option is turned off.

Features not included in the Beta

As we are in the beginning stages of publicly testing cloud streaming on PS Portal, some features will not be available, such as Game Trials, streaming games purchased on PS Store, system features such as Party voice chat and game invites for select games, Create button, 3D audio, and in-game commerce.

Additionally, the streaming games playable on PS Portal are limited to PS5 games, and PS4 games/PS3 games are not supported.

We are always listening to your feedback, and we look forward to seeing many players participating in the beta!

  • When it will be available in the middle east?

  • The ability to stream games…..I appreciate that update😁. Hopefully it turns out to work well and be fruitful.

  • This is a good start and it was odd that this feature was not available from the start (maybe they were unsure about the success of the Portal or maybe they needed the infrastructure) nevertheless is a positive step for the platform however I echo many of the comments about having the ability to also stream PS4 and PS3 in the future.

  • This is the beginning of the end. Your next PlayStation console won’t belong to you. You’ll be paying for a subscription service to rent a console that’s racked in a server hosting facility of some sort. They’ll probably then tier console hosting services by price, ie: a basic spec machine that’s hosted on a virtual machine that will only be available at certain times of the day. If you want a more stable and guaranteed service, you’ll need to pay extra on your monthly fee for the “PlayStation Pro Streaming Service”. Oh, and don’t forget, you’ll have to still purchase game licences on top of this subscription.

Sony, we can see exactly what you’re trying to do. If you go through with this, I won’t be buying any of your software or hardware ever again. Hopefully Microsoft will do what you did to them at E3 2013 and win back the lion market share by calling you out.

I have only ever purchased hardware which has interchangeable media, such as an optical disc drive or a cartridge slot, and either game discs or physical game cartridges. That is the only way I know that I am in control of my purchases and I can play them on any compatible device I want for the rest of my life. I REFUSE to buy digital. I’m not giving real money for a legal document that says “You can use our software for a limited amount of time, and we can revoke your rights any time we feel like it”. Maybe I should try paying with Monopoly money next time, I doubt you’ll like that, will you?

  • Interesting.

I considered buying a Portal in the past, but I ultimately end up using my console for media.

Depending on what’s next added to the catalog, I’d be inclined to restart my membership and get a Portal or 2, but that would likely have to come a day you could launch at least Crunchyroll on the thing like you can do on a Switch. Not to bring up the initial rivalry, but I mean ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • How long do you think it will be before cloud streaming is available to all users? I plan to purchase it when it’s available to all users.

  • Hey just curious. Is there a way to authenticate on hotel wife’s? I see this was a complaint about a year ago and I just got the portal and haven’t been able to find out if you guys fixed this or not

  • When the streaming service will be available for the GCC region especially UAE?

  • Please tell me Fortnite will be added to the games we can play

  • This is amazing!! Now pls add an option to play media apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime directly from the Portal! This would be a game changer as well!!

  • No mention in the blogpost but really hoping they quietly fix the stuttering issues that have been well documented. See pinned post on r/playstationportal. I love my portal but the stuttering has made it a poor experience playing many games, to the point where I’ve reverted back to streaming PS games on my steamdeck via Chiaki which runs so much more smoothly!

  • Yes finally I’ve been waiting for an update like this it be great if they could add big new names to there cloud service an some old ones also but all&all I love this product team Sony all the way💪🏾💪🏾

  • It would be nice to use YouTube Netflix, and other screaming apps that I have on my PS five that I can’t scream on my Porter

  • Think they’ll add this to the remote play app?

  • This is great! Thank you for adding this feature, I can’t wait for its full release.

But there’s something that would make this the definitive remote play device; THE BITRATE.

It would be awesome if the team could give us the option for improved bitrates when connecting to my PS5. The max bitrate supported struggles when we play games with a lot foliage or particles, which happen to be a lot of next gen titles thanks to the high fidelity. It turns into a micro-blocking-fest even with connections of +600mbps in the same room as the modem and my console hardwired. Even if you have to specify that a robust connection is needed, it would be appreciated since that is the biggest drawback of the portal at the moment.

  • Have they ever fixed the issue where the Portal just keeps going into Low Rez Mode after 10 minutes of Play? I constantly have to disconnect/reconnect to my PS5 on my Local WiFi to fix the Low Rez Mode every 10 minutes. It’s why I don’t use my Playstation Portal.

  • What’s the point? These are all games that you can download and play via Remote Play on the Portal. I’m really glad that Sony burned like $400 million on Concord and other games and studio that no one asked for. Thanks for giving me a pointless beta so I can play games I already can play.

  • Why is this not available in Australia?

  • Been playing with it for a while and it’s shockingly good so far. Only big missing piece for me is not being able to view trophies, and trophies earned don’t pop up. Hope thats coming too!

  • Just had a play with the new update 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 amazing!

  • So I purchased a 800$ ps5 then a 400$ portal now I have to pay 200$ subscription fee… anyone else see a problem with this?

  • Is warzone included with the select games, warzone has made it so far why isn’t it a default gaming option

  • Is it possible for a future update to allow streaming apps like Netflix?

  • I love the update! Thank you for listening to the community. Now, if you could finally create an Inzone Hub app for MacBook, it would be greatly appreciated. Alternatively, at least let us control the headset better through the PS5. Could we have access to the EQ like the Pulse line of headphones? I haven’t been able to update since I got them, and I love them for Call of Duty, using the Pulse Elites for single-player games.

  • So I downloaded gta but still can’t get on line any answer to that

  • Hey Blog censors, can you please let me know why my very mild comment was removed? I’m a PS Portal customer. Where did i go wrong? Should i not be a customer?

  • Why are my comments not showing? Am i unwelcome here?

  • Updated my portal today and the beta is live (I’m in the US)….Just a heads up!…. You have to go into your portals settings after you update your portal to turn on the cloud streaming option. Then you’ll see the new cloud stream icon on your portal screen during power on startup.

  • So do you need a ps5 to play the cloud games?

  • STOP “updating”! Every single time you do an “update” you make the service so much worse. Lagging and delay are off the charts now. 100mbps both at home and where I am and it’s still lagging. Gets worse every time yous mess with it. JUST STOP

  • Super great news! Making the great Portal even greater!

I was always expecting that this would eventually come to the Portal and happy to see that it’s being realised.

I noticed that games bought from the PS Store aren’t included, but hopefully that’s something that’s coming down the line. Also PS3 and PS4 games. What a beast of a portable device this would make it if those three things are added.

As a small feedback on actually using the service – pushing the PS button does nothing at the moment. I’m not expecting to get the full PS5 system but some hud or similar would be nice.

  • Please use it in Turkey please

  • This is great news! Adding value to an already great device. Hopefully we can get streaming of PS3 and PS4 titles, too.

  • I have a PS Portal and am willing to give this a try with my PS+ Essential, but not willing to upgrade to PS+ Premium. Hopefully after the Beta is successful, they can offer it to lower PS+ tiers. I am fine with having limited library as it would be very rare, I would want to use my PS Portal this way over Remote Play of my PS5 Pro.

  • When can we expect to have it here in Singapore? I already purchased the premium plan :(

  • And once again we Australians are left in the dust. We have zero form of cloud streaming here, meaning zero PS3 game streaming and now an inability to use this on a device that’s always needed it. Is there absolutely no way of getting any form of streaming down under in today’s world?

  • Hey, two questions. If now PSPortal does not need PS5 to be turn on, is that mean that I could play on PS5 on TV and at PSP different games at the same time?
What if i would like to use 2 PSP at the same time?

  • Can we please enable bluetooth?

  • OK, loving the update, but I think one key issue has been overlooked.

PIN log in. Literally anyone could pick up my Portal and stream a game on my account, edit save files etc.

I like my kids, but if one of them messes with my save files I will disown them until I need a kidney.

  • This is a great update but I haven’t seen any news or comments addressing free to play games that aren’t on PlayStation plus. I would buy a portal for my son to play Fortnite remotely without console and to take advantage of the library of games for myself on console. Is there any chance we see COD or Fortnite added to PS plus in the near future so they can be played without a console?

  • I want to PLAY in TURKEY / TÜRKİYE

  • Online games?

  • Good evening,

I’m commenting to inform your team that the Streaming Beta for the PS Portal seems to be down right now. I tried it yesterday and had a great experience but today it’s not connecting. I’m not the only one reporting this issue either. Again, just wanted to let you guys know. Thanks, and have a good night.

  • So still cant watch youtube or netflix what a shame and waste of money psp lite was so much better

  • Man this feature looks great! Any plans to come to Australia? Not going to hold my breath as Playstation Now never launched here, but hopeful this can be added to all our PS Portal’s here. :)

  • Why is there no cloud gaming option in my ps portal I already updateeeee

  • if you actually care about accessibility, please:
    • enable bluetooth to connect controllers to the Portal (ie: The access controller)
    • allow us to remap the controls on it (and let us make per-game profiles instead of just 3, let us invert-Y, and let us force motion aiming in any game when holding L2)
    • enable zooming! Whoever disabled it on remote play needs to be slapped upside the head. This would be particularly useful if we could place rectangles on the screen to magnify what’s under them
    • let us use the Android touchscreen keyboard to type when the PS5’s keyboard is opened

  • Would like to be able to game on the games I have purchased and have in my library through the cloud without the need of the ps5 being on. Cloud gaming is great and I’m enjoying it, would just love more from it!

  • Včera som si kúpil ps portál a len kvôli tejto funkcii. A funguje to skvele. Milujem to

  • Does anyone know if sharing PSN+ premium account, will we both have access to the streaming benefit? Being able to play at the same time?
