Moonhood is over the moon to announce The Midnight Walk – a dark fantasy adventure made of clay, coming to PS5 and PS VR2!

Imagine waking up in a handcrafted world, where every fingerprint can be spotted up close, every molded twist and turn of clay visible on the ground you walk… and on the monsters trying to eat you.

This image is an in-game screen of the lantern creature Potboy, flame flicking atop his oversized, circular head, staring at the viewer. In the background is a dark landscape with moon-like planet floating in the skies above a distant mountain.

Explore a world of light and dark

In the Midnight Walk, you awake as The Burnt One, a mysterious being who’s dug themselves out of a muddy grave to find their purpose. They find it in Potboy – a little dormant lantern creature that you reignite and bring back to life.

Together you must venture down the Midnight Walk – a perilous, nightmarish highway and, along the way, survive five strange tales about fire; its lifegiving warmth as well as its inherent danger. You’ll outsmart ghoulish enemies, meet a fantastical cast of companions, and gaze in wonder at our hand-crafted world. That’s right; every asset in the game was first sculpted in clay before being 3D-scanned into the game and animated in a stop motion style!

But how did we at Moonhood come to create such a strange adventure?

This image shows Potboy standing in a forest, looking up towards a huge, hulking creature, the head and shoulders of which sprout jagged pillars seemingly containing windows carved into them.

The origins of The Midnight Walk

Not long ago Klaus Lyngeled and I were both going through a creative drought after finishing co-directing our last project, Lost in Random. How do you follow up on a massive game like that? We asked ourselves, and went looking to rediscover that spark.

While I went back to drawing comics, Klaus started working in clay again, creating sculptures and 3D-scanning them!

These images show Klaus moulding one of the game’s characters out of clay.

One day he came to me with a little creature built in clay; a childlike humanoid with a flame coming out of its head. We immediately started talking about a game where you’d have to protect this little creature as you journeyed through a dark fairytale world, filled with fire-eating monsters who want to devour you and your flame.

And as that little flame creature came to life in our first playable mockup demo, so was a spark relit in both me and Klaus. The creation of the Midnight Walk was underway – and we haven’t looked back since.

This images shows Potboy encountering a character called Soul Fisher, who sits beside a campfire. Floating above them is an oversized open book, the pages of which are illuminated by the fire’s glow.

Join us on the journey

We’ve made games for many years together, but never have we been able to stay this true to our original vision – and to ourselves. This game is shaping up to be something truly beautiful and we can’t wait to put this piece of frightful poetry in your hands.

This image shows further work of the studio moulding characters out of clay ahead of them being scanned into the game, as well as sketching out ideas for further characters.

We’ll have much more to share on the game as we head towards launch, and we can’t wait to share more details and a look at exactly how we brought this world to life. For now, all you need to know is that The Midnight Walk is coming in Spring 2025 to PS5 and PS VR2!
