Ghost of Yōtei is coming in 2025

Sucker Punch’s latest adventure introduces a new hero.

Today we are so happy to announce Ghost of Yōtei, the latest game from Sucker Punch and the introduction of our new hero, Atsu.

When we set out to make a new Ghost game, we wanted to maintain the core pillars established in Ghost of Tsushima: playing as a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan, offering freedom to explore at your own pace, and highlighting the beauty of the world.

Ghost of Yōtei is coming in 2025

We also wanted to continue to innovate. To create something fresh but familiar, we looked beyond Jin Sakai’s story and the island of Tsushima, and shifted our focus to the idea of the Ghost instead. At Sucker Punch we love origin stories, and we wanted to explore what it could mean to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask, and uncovering a new legend. This led us to Ghost of Yōtei: a new protagonist, a new story to unfold, and a new region of Japan to explore.

While we aren’t diving into story specifics yet today, we can reveal that Atsu’s journey takes place in 1603, more than 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima. Our story is set in the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, a towering peak in the heart of Ezo, an area of Japan known as Hokkaido in present day. In 1603, this area was outside the rule of Japan, and filled with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers. It’s a far cry from the organized samurai clans who lived in Tsushima, and it’s the setting for an original story we can’t wait to tell.

This is also Sucker Punch’s first game built from the ground up for PlayStation 5, and we’re excited to build on the visual foundation we established in Ghost of Tsushima by making the world feel even more real. We have massive sightlines that let you look far across the environment, whole new skies featuring twinkling stars and auroras, even more believable movement from wind on grass and vegetation, and more improvements we’ll share in the future. Our new setting also gives us the opportunity to introduce new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and even new weapons.

Our trailer today offers a glimpse into this world, but there’s so much more to show, and we’ll have much more to share in the months ahead, including details about Atsu’s journey and the people (and animals) she’ll meet along the way. We are forever grateful for the success of Ghost of Tsushima, and we can’t wait for you all to experience Ghost of Yōtei in 2025.

  • Can’t wait to play this on PC.

  • I’m really excited for the new game!…

But my question is, What happened to Jin sakai?

  • Can’t wait for Atsu taking a bath in a hot spring! ;) I’m so happy for this announcement!!

  • You should learn from Ubisoft. Forcing The Message on us is a straight road to falure.

  • Do you remember when a sector of the press attacked your game with low marks to promote the agenda of The last of us 2 accompanied by the hatred that the social justice Warriors gave against Ghost of Sushima on the internet for the same reason?.
And yet many of us went for your game because precisely it moved away from the agenda of feminist girl bosses and Woke propaganda. Well, here you are appealing to those who attacked you and wanted to destroy you and disowning those who supported you

    • I don’t really think sucker punch is pushing a “agenda”. I honestly think they wanted to move on to a new location in a new time period, and with that comes a new protagonist. The fact that the MC is female is irrelevant in terms of gameplay or design. But from a narrative & character perspective, to not continue with Jin, and build upon his already distinct impact he had on gaming is a miss opportunity.

  • Looking forward to playing this standalone sequel to GOT on the PS5 “PRO” console next year (2025). 😁

  • Been gaming since the 70s and Ghost of Tsushima is one of the greatest games ever made and my all-time favorite game. Im really looking forward to seeing more of Ghost of Yotei. Can it top Ghost of Tsushima? Fingers crossed. Well done Sucker Punch!

  • Absolutely loved Ghost of Tsushima (and Legends). I’ll be adding Yōtei to my gaming library for sure. Looking forward to more info as time goes by.

  • I loved GoT but I’m personally not looking for a sequel. I’m just not a same game new skin type of gamer.

  • I replayed Ghost of tsushima 3 times on the PS4 and twice on the PS5. Shows you the replay value of that game, so this been a build up from scratch for the PS5 will only be more amazing. Great game great development team, thank you.

  • Ghost of Yōtei for PS5|PS5 Pro is a major achievement.

Forever proud for the success of Ghost of Tsushima, and I can’t wait for myself to experience Ghost of Yōtei in 2025.

Congrats to Sucker Punch Studios on the trailer and presentation for Ghost of Yōtei.

Looking forward to adding it to my wishlist on the PlayStation Store when the product page goes live hopefully soon.

  • Looking forward to the new game but way to go in killing off a new character IP in Jin Sakai, especially with getting Spinmaster onboard to produce 6in action figures as Jin Sakai has a HUGE unofficial merchandise market.

Imagine having Jin Sakai along with Aloy and Kratos as the face of PlayStation gaming brand, that’s four years in the making Jin established only for the rug to be pulled in favour of Atsu. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Don’t get me wrong, I expect Ghost of Yotei to be phenomenal if the original formula is followed, but Delsin Rowe was never Cole McGrath even in terms of merch to this day.

    • Yeah it does really strange they hyped up Jin as a PlayStation icon…and then suddenly “nope, no thanks, see ya.” … and I fully expect GoY to be excellent in terms of game design… it just seems like this is a unnecessary self inflicted wound.

  • I CANT WAIT TO PLAY THIS

    Stoked!

  • We wanted ghost of tsushima 2!! not ghost of yotei

  • Too soon to tell. Visuals look nice. Setting, tone, and protagonist seem…strange.

  • Ghost of Yotei looks very exciting in terms of gameplay and evolving the “ghost” design formula, and I can’t wait to explore this new region. However at the same time, it seems silly & weird to abandon Jin and his unfinished story. (I mean don’t the mongols comeback and get blown away by Japan’s famous “divine wind”). I truly believe GoY will be wonderful, but it is most assuredly strange & disappointing we’re not getting to continue on with Jin Sakai.

  • Hoping this game is top notch, I absolutely loved Ghost of tsushima.
Hoping to god that is matches, let alone excels my expectations for GOT.

    Please let it be good!

  • Hey guys! I was thinking, what if u can see the weapon usage at the end of the game? Just a little chart to say, you used a certain weapon to get kills 30% of the time.(random example) I think it would be a cool statistic to show players their preferred weapon usage.

  • What do people mean when they say they want the end of Jin’s story? Jin’s story ended already. He defeated the mongols. That’s the story! How can they release a GoT 2 with no mongols? It makes no sense. A new story is the right way forward.

  • Good

  • Please do the Ukrainian text localization. This was catastrophically lacking in the previous game. Our community will be very grateful

  • No love for either Infamous nor Sly Cooper. 🦝
