Celebrating 30 years of PlayStation with a nostalgic look

Limited Edition console design takes PS5 back to the early days of PlayStation.

As we continue our celebrations leading up to the 30th anniversary of the first PlayStation console launch, we have a special treat to reveal today that brings the past together with the present.

The PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection will be released on November 21. There will be 12,300 units of the PlayStation 5 Pro Console – 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Bundle available for customers to purchase, with limited edition numbers etched onto the unit. The number represents the month and date of the first PlayStation console launch.

We’ve had five fantastic console generations since the launch of our very first PlayStation console. We’re proud of the innovations and experiences we’ve brought to the PlayStation community over the years as we kept up with the latest technology as it advanced. In the early days, the number of pixels was around 300-thousand, and now it is more than 8 million pixels for 4K on screen. Additionally, stereo sound evolved into surround sound – and now we are using 3D audio. The game controller has also evolved, starting with buttons, then came the analog stick and later vibration – and now we have haptics and even adaptive triggers. Everything we’ve done is to ensure PlayStation is the best place to play. We believe the beginning of our journey is an important part of our history at Sony Interactive Entertainment, which is why we are honoring this moment by bringing the original PlayStation design theme into the latest products for PS5 to commemorate the last 30 years. As we look ahead to the future, we will continue to innovate as technology evolves, so you can enjoy each memorable moment in your continued journey with PlayStation.

Please be sure to check in with us regularly on our 30th anniversary webpage as we’ll have more fun celebration activities as we head towards our 30th anniversary.

We’d like to give a heartfelt thanks to everyone for being a PlayStation fan over the last 30 years. There are plenty of great experiences to come and we look forward to the next 30 and beyond!

  • It’s hard to celebrate PlayStations rich history when PlayStation themselves don’t. Porting games non stop to a competing platform and ruining the once legendary “Only On PlayStation” legacy. On top of that, treating their console owners like 2nd class citizen while bending over backwards for PC gamers that hate them. I was a huge fan once but now I’m just disgusted by what this company has become.

    • Sony is porting games to PC to expand their brand to new audiences, just like what Microsoft has done for decades (they started on PC).

This isn’t a bad thing, it just means more people get to enjoy Sony’s games.

    • Expanding the brand is arguably the only good thing about their PC initiative, but PC players will never get consoles, so they’re not really expanding. Just going for comparably smaller, momentary profits at the cost of their reputation and portfolio of system-selling exclusives. Just look at where Xbox is now with their lack of system sellers. Playstation will inevitably end up the same way if it continues this course. Timed exclusivity is a joke too, you can’t have it both ways.

    • Jesus cry ar freaking river

    • @Tendoboy1984 Expanding to a few more thousand people makes ZERO feasible sense. Money, time and resources utterly wasted.

Sony called Days Gone a flop, yet not one single player PlayStation game brought to PC to date can match Days Gone’s first 6 months sales to date lol.

So what do Sony call each and every one if those PC releases then? Complete and utter flops of course.

  • That Pro bundle looks amazing! I hope safeguards are in place to allow the fans to purchase while keeping “professional resellers” from gobbling these up.

To another 30 years of PlayStation!

  • Will y’all release a time for the release? You know we’re going to be in competition with the bots.

  • Nope. Bundle in the disc drive at least if you want anyone to believe you even care about ’30 years of Playstation’. The fact is WE care more than Sony does and it shows in our reactions vs your nickel and diming. Physical games can NOT go away for consoles, if they do then we do, the guys who were actually there in the 90s and bought your first console (with a disc drive).

I kinda get the pricing on the pro, with the 2TB SSD and improved APU (plus the times we’re in) but to NOT have built in the disc drive for a giant cost saving to those that MUST have a disc drive is just… wrong. 699 with a $20 (to Sony) drive built in would’ve been… O.K. Let’s not even talk about the stand, for a system clearly designed to stand vertically (that looks terrible on its side).

Lose the Gaas, literally NOBODY even likes or enjoys that stuff anymore (and I never did), get more focus back on big single player offline games, lose the digital only PS5 Pro (make one bundled with the drive if you can’t build it in now) for like 50 bones extras instead of the 100+ it can cost in some markets, Make some decent FPS games worth a damn (Killzone? Killzone VR?) Support PSVR2 more heavily (yes I bought both PSV1 and 2 and was gonna buy pro to run it better but no mention of PSVR2 in the presentation!? Sheesh Sony you don’t make it easy do you?), stop charging extra to PLAY THE GAMES YOU BOUGHT ONLINE when we already paid for a game’s FULL development/content for the super high prices you now charge (Honestly when you copied Xbox charging to access multiplayer was the day I knew you didn’t really mean “for the gamers” anymore… I will never sign up for PSN I don’t want ‘free trash games’ I just want to OCCAISONALLY be able to PERHAPS access the multiplayer side of games I own (like GT7) without having to pay extra for months/years in advance when I might not even (get time) to use it nor wish to after trying it…

You’re actively killing your whole point of existing, along with all the above you now port all your best games over to PC (I have a fast PC and VR with PSVR2 there too and have used PC’s since 98 for games consoles could never run) but by porting them to PC you’re basically killing your audience and the ‘value’ of owning a console for many of us who willingly own PCs and PS5’s specifically for what each do.

It’s so simple, and WOULD make just as much if not more money (and certainly waste less without Gaas dev cash going up in smoke) if you’d just actually listen to the players at last and stop shooting yourselves in the foot.

30 years of Playstation? 30 years of gradually killing playstation more like. Right the ship before it’s too late please. You have ‘won’ the console war in each gen pretty much and many of us still have some faith in your hardware and software, it’s not too late, but if you keep going this way… by PS6 or 7 it may well be.

  • Is there a list of participating retailers? Even if it is harder for me to get, I would like for the fans that are interested to have a place to look for!

  • Looks superb, where can I get one

  • It’s cool and all but don’t bother, the scalpers will have them all in 1 millisecond flat and charge you 3x as much

  • is it possible to trade in your regular ps5 for the 30th anniversary one?

  • These look absolutely amazing!!! I will be ready to purchase the console when pre-orders open, because the 21st of November is literally my birthdate! That has to be a sign from the universe telling me to buy one😂

Will place this console right next to my PS1 which I still sometimes use😄

  • How much will the 30th anniversary edition will be?

  • How much will the 30th anniversary edition ps5 pro is going to be sold for in the USA?

  • how can I order it?

  • I need this so bad!! please dont let scalpers get it! As some one outside of the US this is going to be something really hard to get!! Also, no PSVR2 30th aniversary edition?

  • Sony I love y’all I do I support every thing you do but here’s the problem (12,300) PS5 Pros is extremely heartbreaking because the chances of Us REAL Sony PlayStation players getting one are slim and yess the resale of them are goin to ridiculous but I’m going to play lottery that that day for better odds of winning versus being able get my hands on a PS5 PRO 30th anniversary with would be the best day ever considering my history with PS thanks for letting me vent good luck

  • All the products look amazing.

I’m worried about potential too high prices and too limited availability, but the products look great and I’ll get minimum a DualSense.

A suggestion: as part of the celebration, make a special 30th anniversary stream video -or series of them- giving an update on:
-What every first party studio is working on or recently released, with some new trailers and game announcement (or with people on their workplaces in case games still can’t be announced or shown), if possible bringing back some classic IP like Wipeout.
-Announce there a decidated PS 30th anniversary PSN sale with games with classic series discounted (not only PS4/PS5 titles, but also including PS1, PS2 and PSP classics)
-Announce more PS1, PS2, PSP classics coming to the store, plus some PS3 ones for PS cloud gaming
-Remind the availability of these 30th anniversary products and related merchandise in the Direct store
-Announce a free online MP weekend on PSN (or that online MP will be free forever)
-Reveal some new trailer of upcoming movie or tv show adaptation of some PS IPs, or even partner ones like Metal Gar

  • The boxes and USB plug in particular are very well done. I hope to get a controller at least, but I’d be much happier with multiple size options, even if adaptive triggers couldn’t fit or something. The Dualsense is just too fat for some of our hands! How about rereleasing PS3 & 4 sized controllers to use with all current games? Accessibility & honoring legacy would be a win-win!

    • Agreed, especially if the controllers keep getting bigger like they have since PS4. Original PS1 to PS3 design is still my favorite and made me feel like they were sculpted for my own personal hands, they were that perfect to me. <3

  • Definitely wasn’t going to get the Pro until I seen this!

I got an OG 5. I need that retro colorway!

  • Wow… That all looks stunningly gorgeous :o

  • I’ve been wanting to get a PS Portal, hopefully the limited edition color isn’t too expensive (under $300).

That gray Dualsense looks nice too.

  • It’s the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation and the PlayStation Plus Extra still suffers from boring/trash games.
I wish you would think about Plus and add some good games (God of War Ragnarock, Tekken 8, Prince of Persia, Mortal Kombat 1, Stellar Blade,…).
apart from children, adults also use ps plus and they need better games.

  • Wouldn’t it be more practical to just sell the limited edition faceplates separately instead of charging a premium for the entire console?

  • Happy 30th Anniversary! Been with you since late ps1. Thank you for all the memories.

  • Wouldn’t it be more practical to just sell the limited edition faceplates separately instead of charging a premium for the whole console?

  • Even the packaging… Major nostalgia.

  • Well, if I can get a pre order in, I guess I will buy a ps5. If not, I guess I will wait to play games on my pc.

  • Is there going to be any kind of bot protection in place bc I really don’t want to have to pay $1500 for the Pro on eBay.

  • Hey Lads, how can I check Participating Retailers in ROI? I thought that Ireland belongs to UK region, but on PlayStation Direct I can’t order to Ireland when UK is selected.

  • Hopefully they give a time out to when the pre orders open. Would be nice if they require the accounts used to purchase to log into the ps5.

  • These look wonderful, I really appreciate the care put into these designs! Where can I learn the prices for these units ahead of pre-orders going live?

  • The nostalgic look of the original PlayStation brings back so many fond memories of my first Playstation console. Can’t wait to get one!

  • I don’t see 30th anniversary console plates being sold separatedly.

It would be great to sell PS5 fat, slim (and if different from the slim ones, Pro) plates separatedly too for people who already have the console and may get a gamepad.

  • Does any one have tips/tricks on previous experience of buying an limited edition? how to get it easier? Can’t wait to get it.

  • i would have loved this color option when purchasing the ps5 and portal gear years ago.

  • Celebrating with limited supply is wrong.

  • Are there going to be some protective measures in place to ensure these don’t get purchased by bots and listed on eBay by scalpers the second they go live for sale? I sure would love to get at least the controller before you let bots ruin it for everyone.

  • Happy 30th!
Please add sections for PS, PS2, and PSP games to the store.
We can’t buy them if we can’t find them.

  • Sony always wins baby

    ABAP

  • Scalpers! Assembly!

  • I guess I’ll try to get 30th Anniversary Edition for the PS5 Pro since I was planning to get it at some point anyway :]

  • nah I’ll pass looks ugly.

  • Damn those look good. Especially the grey dual sense edge!

  • These are absolutely gorgeous! I definitely plan on preordering the DualSense controllers and the Portal.

  • These products look absolutely amazing! I guess my only worry is if I’ll be able to afford these 😅

But other than that, they look wonderful! I would personally prefer getting the controllers, however, I do like the accessories that are provided with the consoles!

  • These bundles look amazing. What time on September 26th, does this go live on Playstation Direct?

  • Well I was already going to buy a Pro, but now I need this one. Save me one, Sony
