Sign-in screen support for select public Wi-Fi networks and other enhancements added; popular games on PS Portal also revealed.
Update on July 24: With the latest system software update released today, PlayStation Portal can also connect to a range of public Wi-Fi networks that operate at 5GHz.
When we developed the PlayStation Portal remote player, our goal was to bring high-quality console gaming experiences to the palm of your hands, even when you aren’t in front of the TV. We continue to evolve the experience on PS Portal, and we are happy to announce that the latest system software update for our first dedicated remote play device will start rolling out tomorrow – adding a few new user enhancements.
Sign-in screen support for select public Wi-Fi networks
While we recommend PS Portal to be used in your home as you have control over the quality of the Wi-Fi, it can also be used outside of the home in places where a fast and stable Wi-Fi connection is available – and we’ve seen many players take advantage of this.
With this new update, PS Portal will also connect to a range of public Wi-Fi networks* that may require additional validation steps beyond entering the network password. This includes Wi-Fi networks with sign-in screens that can often be found in hotels, cafes, and airports.
To connect to these public Wi-Fi networks, PS Portal will display a QR code for you to scan with your smartphone or tablet. Once scanned, you’ll be able to use your mobile device’s web browser to complete the additional validation steps on behalf of your PS Portal. As a reminder, PS Portal requires a Wi-Fi connection with at least 5Mbps, and for a better play experience a high-speed connection of at least 15Mbps is recommended.
New visual feedback for touchpad areas
The emulated touch pad on PS Portal’s vibrant 8-inch screen is getting an update. We’ve added new visual feedback to the touch pad areas. The new effects will be displayed when using the touch pad areas during remote play.
Display battery level in percentage
You now have the option to display the remaining battery level percentage on the status bar at the top right corner of your screen. To use this feature, open the quick menu, go to [Settings] > [System] > [Battery], and then turn on [Show Battery Percentage].
Since the initial launch of PS Portal last November, we’ve been overwhelmed with the enthusiastic reactions and the variety of ways our community has been enjoying gaming on PS Portal. While Remote Play for PlayStation has been available since the PlayStation 3 generation, we’ve built upon this technology with PS Portal to elevate the Remote Play experience to another level by integrating key features of the DualSense wireless controller with a vibrant 8-inch LCD screen.
We’re excited to see that PS Portal has introduced many more gamers to the Remote Play feature on PS5, with over 60 percent of PS Portal owners using the feature for the first time**. What’s more, PS Portal is making it easier for many players to access their games, with the average PS Portal owner’s engagement on PS5 going up within the first 8 weeks of using their PS Portal.
We’ve also seen a wide range of games proven to be popular on PS Portal, from single player adventures including God of War Ragnarök, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Astro’s Playroom to multiplayer titles including Fortnite, Rocket League and EA Sports FC 24 – all being some of the most played games on PS Portal within the first 3 months of its launch***.
We’re always grateful to the PlayStation community for embracing our journey as we continue to explore different ways to bring new player experience. Check out the official website to learn more about PS Portal and let us know what you think in the comments!
*To connect to public networks, make sure that the initial setup for your PS Portal is completed. Authentication requires use of another device that can connect to the public network, such as a smartphone. Public networks that operate at 5GHz are not supported.

Well, it’s June 19th. 7pm.. Still have not seen the PS Portal software update unfortunately 💔
June 19th. No update sadly. Any communication?
Can you guys please add the ability to watch Netflix and other media
Can you guys please add the ability to watch Netflix and other media on the PlayStation portable?
awesome now make a real handheld like psp3 or psvita2.
It’s 20th June 2024. Still no upgrade invitation. What’s happening?
I read that it will not support 5ghz. Isn’t practically everything 5ghz now? I was waiting to get one until it got a web browser of some sort and now it has something, but it can’t run on new networks.
New update just came out! Guy’s
I want to watch shows and anime on my PS portable plz 🙏🏾
You should enable the use of a normal PS5 controller to be connected via USB C or paired with the Portal. Playing some games with the smaller analog sticks at times can be awkward. Allowing normal controller pairing would be something cool to try out.
Would love an update where this can be used as a Dual Sense controller with the PS5 for local multiplayer
Awesome! Thank you for this update it will let me use it in work trips.
Much needed update!! Thanks!!
Great update, can’t wait to try the new features, but there’s one feature that I think is really necessary – multiple profile support. I use different profiles on my PS5, so having this feature would make the system pretty much perfect!
when are we going to get access to PlayStation Plus. $160 a year and I feel cheated that I can’t play on the go!
Bring Astro Bot to Psvr2!!! Please! 🙏 🙏 🙏
After the upgrade, it shows me the console and when I click to connect, it doesn’t connect. The console must already be open to be able to connect.
Please fix this Wi-Fi thing… I feel nothing’s wrong with the value.. And if I walk too far or go upstairs, it’s hell getting it back connected to the Console ….. Will be cool to watch Netflix and other apps on it… Had to throw that in
Love to see the thing still getting updates. Hopefully one day we can see the support for cloud streaming
it is very fun
Can you PLEASE bring Astrobot to PSRV2!?!? 🙏
Is my portal the only one that has performance issues after the update? Cause it’s bad and can’t even play it anymore, worked fine before the update, terrible connection issues with full/strong connection. Any advice or update coming to fix issue? Or is it a collectable now ?
Why no
Update for the lagging and sound problems, surely that’s more important??
That’s all great but the option we all want is to be able to switch profiles. I let my kid use the portal on my profile and she saved her game over one of my saves lol. Gutted.
cooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool
I am new to the PSP, I literally just bought one four days ago. I do love it and think it’s awesome, it has a great screen and the controller is awesome. The only thing I wish I would’ve known before I bought it was that it would not be able to stream YouTube, Netflix and etc. from my PlayStation five, I should have done my research first, so I do blame myself for that the overall I think the PSP is great and I recommend it to anybody that travels or just simply needs to be in the living room more lol. Also, PS5 # family thank you for recommending Elden ring. I love the game.
I returned my Portal and will not be buying again until:
59hz vs 60hz is fixed for micro stutter.
Haptic and audio lag is reduced to be comparable to remote play on my phone.
It’s ridiculous to me that my phone remote play (official Sony app) is superior to a dedicated device.
Please fix these issues and I’ll be happy to buy it again.
Can the ability to select which console profile to use be added to the Portal? Right now, the Portal only allows to use 1 PS5 user profile.
Please enable bluetoith for use with other heads besides the PS Buds. This is very needed.
I just don’t understand why we can’t at least stream games to the Portal directly from PSN like we can on PS5. Why should I use this instead of my phone with a backbone controller? There’s no reason for this to exist.
Now, if we could get the PlayStation equivalent of the Steam Deck, we’ll be cooking.
Wen I connect my portal and I play a game my they show me the internet is out line pls check your connection I reset my rooters it still do the same think I have great connection with my ps5 but not my portal is there a way to be able to update the wifi I don’t play right now because of the situation
I love the Portal and I believe we should have it like it explained as. It is a PS5 Remote Player. Any content your PS5 can display the Portal should be able to. That would make it an actual Portal. Plus streaming any content with make it the best portable handheld.
How many GBs or TB or can you used your external hard drive ?
