Astro Bot arrives on PS5 September 6

Join Astro on his own supersized space adventure.

Hi everyone! On behalf of Team Asobi, I have the immense pleasure to unveil our new game Astro Bot coming to PlayStation 5.

A video speaks a thousand words so please check out our first trailer to see the game in action.

Astro Bot arrives on PS5 September 6

Since making an appearance at the launch of PlayStation 5, Astro has introduced many players to the magic of PlayStation. We received a ton of heart-warming comments about how much fun the game was, how it utilized the DualSense wireless controller in fun ways and how it paid tribute to 25 years of PlayStation history. From the bottom of our robotic hearts, thank you very much for all your support!

We listened to your comments and now, Astro is back in a super-sized space adventure, his biggest to date.

This image shows Astro riding his Dual Speeder above the clouds. A flock of pink flamingos fly around him. Poking through the clouds in the distance are mountainous outcrops with green grass and pink trees at their top.

In this brand-new game, you will explore 6 galaxies and over 80 levels in search of Astro’s scattered crew. Hold on tight to your Dual Speeder and dive down to each unique planet, from lush forests, sandy beaches, hot volcanoes to more surprising locations such as a gigantic hourglass or the canopy of a singing tree!

In this image, Astro stands on a lush grassy field. Towering behind him is a thick trunked tree, adorned with a mouth-like cavity and two glowing blue eyes which observe the tiny bot in front of it.

To get help on his mission, Astro can use over 15 new abilities offering unique play styles. As you would expect from an Astro game, these take full advantage of the DualSense controller, its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers so you can feel every little step along the journey. Among the many new powers, you will find Barkster, the Bulldog Booster that lets you air-dash and smash through enemies, metal and glass, the Twin-Frog Gloves that offer long-range punching and the ability to swing and the Giant Sponge that lets you suck up water from the environment to grow huge and cause massive (and slightly moist) destruction. Combined with improved Astro controls, these new powers take the Astro platforming experience to new heights, while remaining accessible for all. We can’t wait for you to get your hands on these and let us know how they feel.

In this image, flexing a pair of green Twin-Frog Gloves, Astro attacks a towering creature that engulfs that majority of the screen.

We also cranked up the number of baddies too with over 70 new types, including massive bosses at the end of each galaxy. Special mention to the deadly cobra queen Lady Venomara who appears in the trailer, waiting for you in her golden lair. Defeating each boss will uncover a wonderful secret but we don’t want to spoil that, so our lips are sealed😊. And for the brave ones of you craving even more challenge, the game comes packed with die-and-retry levels to test your reflexes.

In this image, with a metal rooster clad to his back, Astro Bot observes a mammoth metallic cobra, the tail of which slithers across the platform in front, kicking up dust. Behind that green and gold-bangled body rises the snake’s head.

But that’s not all, during this epic adventure, Astro will reunite with many friends from the PlayStation universe. The trailer shows only a few but we double down on the cast and hope to delight every PlayStation fan out there. And who knows, maybe this time, these characters will play an even bigger part in saving the day?  (wink)

This image is a close up of a winking Astro Bot, who proudly displays a robotic hound who’s positioned on his back like a backpack.

That’s all for now. Thank you for reading. At Team Asobi, we believe in the second-to-second fun and joy of video games. And with this new Astro Bot game, we invested all our love and craft to bring a constant smile to your face, as you run, jump, bop enemies and find the many secrets and jokes we dotted around.  We will be waiting for you on September 6!

This image shows a Kratos-like Bot facing the camera, tightly gripping his Leviathan Axe, which hovers above a tree stump.

We’ll be back soon with more details about the game as well as pre-orders opening up June 7. Until then, power up your DualSense, Team Asobi and Astro are taking you on a PlayStation space adventure to remember!

  • This is a very bitter pill that we won’t be see a VR mode for these games. How come Sony makes the PSVR2, then makes very little effort to port first party games to it? Many of the first party games that missed PSVR2 were disappointing, but Astro Bot missing PSVR2 goes too far. It makes me feel like Sony has no interest in PSVR2 and anyone who bought one is being abandoned.

  • This game looks great and I think Team Asobi should be focused making new full games like this one. But please Sony, hire some porting/suppport studio to make a PSVR2 version of this game, and also to port Astro Rescue Mission to PSVR2.

  • You are letting PSVR2 die by not taking action. You know better than anyone that content and exclusives are crucial, yet you are allowing this to happen. In your business update, you included PSVR2 as part of expanded engagement. Why not invest in 1st party hybrid games to align with this goal?

  • Psvr2 ! I can’t believe we only had two first party games in a year for what seems to be an accessory! With a so much talented team as Asobi and the jewel Astrobot on Psvr, we all had hopes the kings in town would defend the psvr2. No luck this time ! What a betrayal!

  • PSVR2 come on! Won’t buy it until then

  • Please make sure the new Astro Bot game is playable on PSVR2. “The Playroom VR” and “Astro Bot Rescue Mission” were some of the most popular titles on the original PSVR, and to exclude the new Astro Bot game from PSVR2 would be a mistake.

  • GEEKYKIDz2020cs

PSVR2 support not being mentioned, is very disappointing since most of us who actually love this mascot and franchise. Started on psvr1 and spent $600 on a psvr2 waiting for more support.. Sony stop releasing hardware and then abandoning it.

  • Why? Why no vr support for Astro? 😱

  • I will end my relationship with PlayStation, started more than 25 years ago, if this emblematic game that all PS VR2 users have been waiting for does not receive a VR mode. One has to know when to stop.

  • Pourquoi pas de version PSVR2?
Soutenez un minimum le casque, adapté au moins Astro Rescue Mission sur PSVR2.!
    Merci.

  • Psvr2 please !

  • Would have been nice to get even just a super short Astro demo for the PSVR2 hardware to showcase the haptics, triggers eye tracking etc at their best. But nope.. Nothing. I thought the guys behind Astro were making something new to take advantage of new hardware or something?

But anyway, doing my part I suppose! We need answers about PSVR2

  • I loved ASTRO playroom on PS5 I might get this

  • this game was gonna make me buy a PSVR 2 :(

  • I was just waiting the announcement to finally buy a psvr2.

    Not this time…

  • The game looks great and I see no reason for Sony to put their hybrid strategy to work with this title. It should be a no brainer considering Astros Playroom and Astro Bot Rescue mission. Astro Bot FOR PSVR2!

  • Astro Bot with PSVR 2 support please

  • PSVR2 Support Please

  • State of Pay

Unsurprisingly meh. No reason for excitement sans Astro Bot.

  • What no PSVR 2 🤬..! #? # I want a psvr2 version please 🙏

  • Sony has blatantly not disappointed us all, but disrespected EVEYONE who dropped $1000+ on a PS5 / PSVR2 awaiting Astro Bot 2 on PSVR2 utilizing the haptics and eye tracking features..you havent even ported the original Rescue mission from PSVR1 to PSVR2 yet??! Why did we buy a PSVR2?? to play Quest ports and indie titles?? NO because Playstation showed us w PSVR1 what they were capable of with London Studios Blood & Truth, With Astro Bot, with bringing EXCITING BIG games like Skyrim to VR and Star Wars games like Squadrons..NONE of which have been ported to the new Headset, NONE of which are providing a sequel, and this move to dismiss Astro Bot on VR after all the waiting, expectations and MONEY we have all spent is just a slap in the face..its almost like Sony is advertising for Meta Quest 3 by abandoning any engagement to the community for their headsets ecosystem..KNOW YOUR CUSTOMER BASE..Astro would have sold 1-1 per every PSVR2 headset owner 100% I just dont get who’s making these decisions, but its clear they do not care about their VR user base. Capcom is doing ALL the heavy lifting for YOUR headset. Astro was NEEDED not just wanted…by everyone.

  • My only question is would this game be free like the last one that came with the ps5 I’m assuming not but hoping it is

  • REALLY bummed that this isn’t made for VR. I would have bought it day 1, but in 2D it just doesn’t have the same charm. I tried playing the game bundled with PS5, and while fun, it left me longing for more Astro VR.

  • COME ON GUYS, IT’S OBVIOUS!

At the end of the trailer: ‘Coming Soon to PS5 R’

Where the (rather prominent) R could be the registered trademark symbol – but what’s the roman numeral for 5? Yeah, V.

Ergo, Coming soon on PSV R. There could still be a twist in the tail yet folks!

  • After the success of Astro’s Playroom I always assumed the followup to Rescue Mission would not be VR exclusive, but I never thought they would drop VR support entirely. This has been one of my most anticipated games for years but now its announcement falls flat. I was looking forward to getting it alongside a PSVR2 but this may as well be an announcement that PSVR2 will no longer be supported.

Ridiculous that eventually the game will come to PC and inevitably be playable in VR via mods but Sony won’t support its own headset and console.

  • Are you kidding me? This game needs PSVR2 support! Rescue Mission was great on the PSVR1, this has so much potential with the PSVR2.

  • I feel like I’m banging my head against a wall when it comes to this headset. It has POTENTIAL. IT TRULY DOES. PC support is one thing but will that be it? You’ll completely wash your hands of it after that??? Control the fucking narrative Sony. At least you said that the Vita was “Outdated tech” in 2015 and sunsetted that. What’s your plan for VR in the future Sony? If you’re truly letting 3rd parties carry this thing, then how about this? Take less of a cut from any VR developers that want to make any games for the headset so they don’t all just go to Meta or PC. At least that’ll give them a bit more of an incentive to continue to make games for PSVR 2.

  • PSVR2 support please!!

  • cant wait to play this game!

  • People need to stop whining about PSVR2 support and admit it’s an overpriced, expensive, flop. The game will support the ENTIRE PS5 install base first and foremost. PSVR and PSVR2 were experiments that simply didn’t work out. Sorry you let yourself get bamboozled a second time after their abysmal record of supporting the original.

  • You have a VR headset to be proud of, a First Party Game screaming out to be played in VR. Time to back the headset and reward those who shelled out over £1000 to play PlayStation games in VR. Give Astrobot a VR mode!!!

  • Sony, just work on the following few tiny little things and all is well!

*Add VR option to existing Astro Bot PS5 game

*Add a VR option to the existing Astros playroom installed on all PS5’s

*Update rescue mission to be playable on PSVR2, it can be a new game, I’ll pay again

*Go ahead and bring playroom VR over to PSVR2 as well, because it’s too fun to leave behind. I’ll pay for this as well even though it was originally free

*Then just simply release the following; Astro Kart, Astro all stars, Astro Galaxy, Astro odyssey, Astro paint, Astro Smash Bots, Astro RPG, Astro maker, Astro Wonder, Astro Haunted mansion, Paper Astro, Astro tennis, Astro Golf, Astro Olympics, Astros Sony land, etc.

And that’s it! See, really not asking for much here. Just the basics!

  • Sony doesn’t want to release Astrobots for the PSVR2? That’s so sad! The first one was one of THE best VR games to date. Just the perfect blend of aesthetics, gameplay, immersion and oh so charming. I still remember how positively surprised I was when I first played it; absolutely came out of left field. What a bummer that there doesn’t seem to be enough profit to be had here for Sony. They truly had something special in Astro Bot VR.

Sony where is the support from your 1st party studios for PSVR2?
If you don’t even want to bring over Astrobot which was one of the most beloved games on the first headset and thus the most obvious choice for the succesor, it continues to raise doubts about the future.
Even though the games have been pretty amazing so far, I feel like vr support for Astrobot would have gone such a long way to show that you believe in your own device.
But sadly now all we can do once more is to wait for another life sign, without any idea of the long term plan.

  • WOULD IT BE SUCH A DRAIN ON RESOURCES FOR AT LEAST ONE 1ST PARTY TITLE PER YEAR?

  • Astrobot rescue mission was the best game on psvr1. To leave out any vr support feels like a betrayal.I am heartbroken. Yours sincerely a 42 year old man

  • At least one 1st party title per year for PSVR2*

  • No PSVR2 mode!?? Sony….make it happen!

  • Please, give us PSVR 2 for this game. Any sign for those of us who want the PSVR 2 to succeed!

  • This looks great, but where is the PSVR2 support? This should be a hybrid game at a minimum.

  • That Non-PSVR2 logo at the end of the trailer was a WILD move ! It make me hate the announcement because Playroom and Rescue Mission are both my favorite platformer and on PSVR it was legit the ultimate unique plaform experience. This is so sad….

    • If you loved Playroom, why would you be sad about this announcement? It’s basically Playroom, but bigger and presumably better.

Tying the IP to VR exclusively would be a mistake in my opinion. Astro’s playroom was too good for future games to be limited by such a small install base.

They may even have another Astro VR game in development for all we know, I just don’t see any negative here even if you were hoping for more VR games.

  • It’s literally 4 times the length of Astro Bot: Rescue Mission and that was 6 to 8 ours in length.

This will literally be on par with the length of something like Mario Odyssey.

Astro’s Playroom was a tech demo. This is not.

  • Extremely disappointed that there’s no PSVR2 support. Ever since I bought the headset last year, a follow up to the excellent Rescue Mission is what I was looking forward to the most. Pleaaseee Asobi Studios, please add a VR mode to this game in the future. 🤞🏼

  • Looks like Astro Bot Rescue Mission 2. Why doesnt this have PSVR2 support? Astro is a beloved mascot character for all of us that were introduced to them back on PSVR. This has been a highly anticipated game for many of the VR gamers that choose to support and game on the Playstation platform. The decision to exclude VR2 is very confusing and dissapointing. Giving Astro Bot VR support would go a long way to show that VR is an important part of the Playstation ecosystem. Especially in this current climate of negativity surrounding PSVR2. I hope you come to realize the love people have for this title and can still find a way add VR support.

  • My PSVR2 was ready 😭 rescue mission was the best VR Game for me, to bad it’s not at least a hybrid game… So i will waiting for Max Mustard, even it will not be the same…

  • Agree with so many of these comments above, flat Astrobot just seems straight up boring after playing rescue mission, Sony really missed the boat on this one.

  • I am extremely sad about the lack of VR support! It’s a shame that after a year Sony is completely abandoning PS VR2!

  • I’m sad there’s no VR support. I was under the impression that hybrid games were going to be a major reason to own a psvr2.

We’d be happy to be a floating camera if nothing else.
