Astro Bot arrives on PS5 September 6

Join Astro on his own supersized space adventure.

Hi everyone! On behalf of Team Asobi, I have the immense pleasure to unveil our new game Astro Bot coming to PlayStation 5.

A video speaks a thousand words so please check out our first trailer to see the game in action.

Astro Bot arrives on PS5 September 6

Since making an appearance at the launch of PlayStation 5, Astro has introduced many players to the magic of PlayStation. We received a ton of heart-warming comments about how much fun the game was, how it utilized the DualSense wireless controller in fun ways and how it paid tribute to 25 years of PlayStation history. From the bottom of our robotic hearts, thank you very much for all your support!

We listened to your comments and now, Astro is back in a super-sized space adventure, his biggest to date.

This image shows Astro riding his Dual Speeder above the clouds. A flock of pink flamingos fly around him. Poking through the clouds in the distance are mountainous outcrops with green grass and pink trees at their top.

In this brand-new game, you will explore 6 galaxies and over 80 levels in search of Astro’s scattered crew. Hold on tight to your Dual Speeder and dive down to each unique planet, from lush forests, sandy beaches, hot volcanoes to more surprising locations such as a gigantic hourglass or the canopy of a singing tree!

In this image, Astro stands on a lush grassy field. Towering behind him is a thick trunked tree, adorned with a mouth-like cavity and two glowing blue eyes which observe the tiny bot in front of it.

To get help on his mission, Astro can use over 15 new abilities offering unique play styles. As you would expect from an Astro game, these take full advantage of the DualSense controller, its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers so you can feel every little step along the journey. Among the many new powers, you will find Barkster, the Bulldog Booster that lets you air-dash and smash through enemies, metal and glass, the Twin-Frog Gloves that offer long-range punching and the ability to swing and the Giant Sponge that lets you suck up water from the environment to grow huge and cause massive (and slightly moist) destruction. Combined with improved Astro controls, these new powers take the Astro platforming experience to new heights, while remaining accessible for all. We can’t wait for you to get your hands on these and let us know how they feel.

In this image, flexing a pair of green Twin-Frog Gloves, Astro attacks a towering creature that engulfs that majority of the screen.

We also cranked up the number of baddies too with over 70 new types, including massive bosses at the end of each galaxy. Special mention to the deadly cobra queen Lady Venomara who appears in the trailer, waiting for you in her golden lair. Defeating each boss will uncover a wonderful secret but we don’t want to spoil that, so our lips are sealed😊. And for the brave ones of you craving even more challenge, the game comes packed with die-and-retry levels to test your reflexes.

In this image, with a metal rooster clad to his back, Astro Bot observes a mammoth metallic cobra, the tail of which slithers across the platform in front, kicking up dust. Behind that green and gold-bangled body rises the snake’s head.

But that’s not all, during this epic adventure, Astro will reunite with many friends from the PlayStation universe. The trailer shows only a few but we double down on the cast and hope to delight every PlayStation fan out there. And who knows, maybe this time, these characters will play an even bigger part in saving the day?  (wink)

This image is a close up of a winking Astro Bot, who proudly displays a robotic hound who’s positioned on his back like a backpack.

That’s all for now. Thank you for reading. At Team Asobi, we believe in the second-to-second fun and joy of video games. And with this new Astro Bot game, we invested all our love and craft to bring a constant smile to your face, as you run, jump, bop enemies and find the many secrets and jokes we dotted around.  We will be waiting for you on September 6!

This image shows a Kratos-like Bot facing the camera, tightly gripping his Leviathan Axe, which hovers above a tree stump.

We’ll be back soon with more details about the game as well as pre-orders opening up June 7. Until then, power up your DualSense, Team Asobi and Astro are taking you on a PlayStation space adventure to remember!

  • Without VR support you put the Last Nail into the Coffin for PSVR 2.

  • This making me sad! No psvr2 support? Why? Playstation doesn‘t communicate with the players. But now i see, where the future of psvr2 is going….😥

  • Astro bot without psvr2 support?! Sony, do you hear us?

  • any plans for like a collectors edition or something close to one.

  • If you build it with VR, they will come! Come on Asobi! Just use the Dualsense controller.. it doesn’t need hand gestures.

Great news though finally.. I’m really looking forward to playing this and hoping it will be bug free. ;)

Also.. A message to Sony, if you market PS VR2 better (more than just internal blog posts and in ‘State of Plays’, you would very likely sell more units! And perhaps don’t hide PSVR2 games at the very bottom of the PS app? Seriously, it’s below PSVR1!?

It’s a great device and the first VR headset I was willing to shell out money for. The ease of use and strong rendering performance of the PS5 made purchasing an easy decision for me.

Please Sony, have more faith in your tech.

  • Will never play this until it is in vr, loved rescue mission and no matter how good this game is the only way for me to speak is through my wallet. It won’t matter because sony doesn’t give a s**t about psvr2, they’ve showed that time and time again.

  • PSVR2 please!!!

  • There is still time to add the option to play this in VR. Don’t mistreat your players like that.

  • It’s absolutely unthinkable that this doesn’t have PSVR2 support. PSVR users have been anxiously awaiting another Astro Bot VR game since Rescue Mission, which is amazing, and having not even said a peep about VR with this new game is just stunning, and not in a good way.

  • Sony, do you really care about and understand your PSVR2 players? We want astrobot for PSVR2 so bad, so you just leave us outside?

  • Sony just slaps in the face of their psvr2 users. It’s a clear sign that Sony has abondoned psvr2. They’re making no games for their own hardware and gonna sell you the adapter for pc. What a shame 😔

  • OK,firstly this game is adooooooorable. I love the Astrobot games and I cannot forget my first experience on PSVR1 which was amazing!
So here comes my question Team Asobi. Why have you not decided to support PSVR2 gamers as well with a VR/Flat version that can satisfy both market share.
There are many of us that have invested our hard earned money on PSVR2 waiting to play a new Astrobot game so seeing a new one come out which is only playable on flat screen was so disappointing.
We have not even got a port of the first game to PSVR2 which feels like a missed opportunity.
I will still play the game but given that Capcom can make a game like a RE both playable on flat screens and VR why can you guys not do the same too?
The game looks like it was built to play in VR, even some of the bosses seem to be the ones we saw in the PSVR1 version so what is going to take for you guys to be convinced to do a VR update to the game?

  • Is there PSVR2 support?

  • This is a clear sign that Sony has abondoned psvr2. After just one year! No software from Sony for it’s own hardware. What a shame. Better don’t buy anything from Sony in the future!

  • It’s a disappointing that PSVR2 support wasn’t just a given. I gave SONY the benefit of the doubt when I got my PSVR2. Hopefully they’ll do the right thing, and lesson learned if not.

  • What? It needs to come to PSVR2!

  • richard_belzer95

Part of the anticipation for a follow up was JUST how good the original was in VR. Is there a reason Sony forgot it made a newer, better VR?

  • Had no idea this was in the works – super stoked now. Looks pretty awesome!

  • Please tell me there will be psvr2 support in the future. This feels like a big middle finger to fans

  • What a waste of buying a £529.99 headset. Where’s Astro Bot PS VR2? Where’s the first party support? What’s the plan? If any? PlayStation seems to remain quiet while they continue to nickel and dime customers with anti-consumer practices, facing lawsuit after lawsuit internationally. It’s no wonder customers are looking elsewhere.

  • Let your PSVR 2 Fan base down € 500 for what

  • If this doesn’t even get PSVR2 support I don’t know what I am keeping the headset for. As said above this was a fantastic experience on PSVR1, if they don’t bother to continue that for PSVR2 whats the point.

  • @Sony. I have always supported you. I have had the PSVR1 and PSVR2 since release. It is a dream to immerse yourself in VR. I understand if one platform does not take off as well as another and we now have the feeling that Sony is dropping VR. Even if we VR enthusiasts only make up a small percentage of the games market, we are not willing to give up and will continue to support VR so that many more players are encouraged to get into VR. Your no-comment strategy has also given the impression that you do not care what the community wants and expects when you have spent €1100 or more on your hardware. We at least expect transparency. A signal of what will happen next with VR. I will take FCE, the developers of Firewall Ultra, as an example! Many LOVE this game. Why does Sony not care what happens to the FU community who pay €60 for a game that is no longer supported after only 4 months. No new maps, no updates, nothing. Of course, the studios are responsible for this, but if you sell hardware, you should make sure there are enough triple A games. With such a small selection of good games, it will be difficult for VR gaming.

  • No support for PSVR2 ?????

  • Not PSVR2 support at all? Wow, just wow. In bought PSVR2 on Day one, because I wanted to support you and had some trust in YOUR support also. This was quite some money for me. But you continue to punch all PSVR2 buyers in their face. No HL: Alyx, no deal with Oculus for their former PC titles (Stormland, Lone Echo, Asgard’s Wrath…) and now, you didn’t even consider PSVR2 SUPPORT (at least as hybrid title) for the successor of the best PSVR1 title? You can’t be serious..!

  • Sony please communicate your PSVR2 strategy and what you are doing to support the headset. The silence is causing potential new players from not buying PSVR2 and for current owners to lose hope with some even selling their headsets. If you are providing funding to 3rd party or indie developers take credit for it publicly. If you have a 1st party studio working on PSVR2 mention it. I know it has only been ~1.5 years since PSVR2 released and I think the support has been really good, but the media narrative around it has not. Sony needs to control the narrative and that is not going to happen if you are silent.

Astrobot not having PSVR2 support is the perfect example. Astro was foundational to psvr1 with Rescue Mission and Playroom VR so the expectation is that he should be part of PSVR2. Astrobot with no PSVR2 support gives the impression that Sony is abandoning or does not care about PSVR2 because Team Asobi’s game highlight Sony hardware. So where is that for PSVR2? If a PSVR2 mode is in development for Astrobot, but won’t be available at launch announce it even if it is a year+ away from release.

It would have been the perfect time to announce something new PSVR2 related that Sony supports during the State of Play while the headset is $100 off. Just showing 3rd party games that are on other headsets is not enough even though those games look great. You are losing sales because you are not highlighting your support of PSVR2.

In summary, PSVR2 is great but Sony needs to communicate support and the plan now to control the narrative and silence all the negativity. If not, PSVR2 will not see the adoption it deserves and current adopters will continue to be frustrated with some giving up. If Sony wants PSVR2 to be successful it must invest in game development, if they are already doing this then communicate.

Also, please port 1st party psvr1 games to PSVR2 that would be an easy win that would help out tremendously.

  • The VR community are crying out for this!! Announce the VR mode!!!

  • As I watched the trailer, I imagined how cool it would be as a PSVR2 title. If there is any opportunity to make it into a hybrid, that should be done. At the very least, get Rescue Mission ported to PS5 for PSVR2.

  • Will there be a mode for PSVR2? Astro was my favorite game on PSVR1 and I have been waiting for PSVR2 astro game since launch. If this has no PSVR2 mode then I believe it points to the end of PSVR

  • This having no PSVR2 support is bad enough but again not even a single first party VR game shown.
That is unacceptable and shows a complete lack of appreciation for those of us who chose to spend our hard earned money on the new headset.
    Let down once again 😞

  • Add PSVR2 support. Make it a hybrid. Best of both worlds for everyone. Also wouldn’t it push my headsets sold since people playing it in non VR might be intrigued to try it in VR?

Come on guys support the headset. One of the greatest experiences for PSVR1 was Astro Bot

  • Will be holding off for hopefully a VR version. Don’t want to buy this now and then find out 6 months later there’s a VR patch coming

  • Will it have PSVR2 support?

  • HavocPigeonRulez

Please consider adding hybrid PSVR2 support for this title. Astrobot Rescue Mission in VR was one of the best experiences I’ve had in VR (and I’ve played it all). Many of us bought our PS5s specifically for PSVR2 and the promise of 1st party Sony IP’s like Astro Bot on the platform. I understand opening Astro to the wider, non-VR audience, but to not make this game at least a hybrid title is a slap in the face to PSVR2 owners and betrays Astro’s VR roots. Please consider supporting PSVR2.

  • Please consider applying PSVR2 support!

  • Just tell us what do we possibly have to do Sony for you to show us a little more love for the fact that we literally bought into this hardware that we truly love but you are hesitant to support. You couldn’t at least have given us another Astrobot in VR? Really? No port of the first one? Really?

  • Sony, your support for the £500 paperweight known as PSVR2 has been nothing short of disgraceful. If there was one game which should have been made for PSVR2 or hybrid then this was it. Redeem yourselves slightly by announcing it as such and port the original Robot Rescue to PSVR2 for those who didn’t get to play it first time around but trusted you with a big wodge of cash for the second generation of VR.

  • NinjaRemoteplay

I’m glad there showing Astro bots some love

  • Day one game for me. I’m so glad Astro looks to be getting his own bonafide adventure. I’m sure it’s going to show how many PS5 features are going unused by developers on top of being a simply awesome game. The cameos hit the nostalgia bug right in the nose too. Day freaking one.

  • yausedmeskinner

Honestly I’d be happy if they just let us play with the Dual Sense 5 in PSVR2. No need for full VR integration with the VR controllers, just let us observe in a 3D world and play the same game as everyone else. Please?

  • For this to not be announced alongside a PS VR2 mode is completely absurd. It’s a disservice to the original fans of the first full fledged Astro title. Part of me still has faith it’s coming, but Astro needs to be in VR. You guys have such a good headset. Please show it some love

  • No PSVR support is beyond insulting.

  • ur_wifes_man_toy

Will not buy any team asobi games after this lack of support of psvr2. Lazy and greedy company.

  • Please add PSVR2 support after launch! And also port Astro Bot Rescue Mission to PSVR2! DO NOT ABANDON PSVR2, like you did Vita!

  • The game looks amazing HOWEVER I will not be purchasing this until a VR option is provided or at the very least they acknowledge the VR2 owners & port over Rescue Mission. Supremely disappointed with Sony & their handling of 1st party PSVR2 games (or lack thereof). An amazing headset that has to depend on 3rd party offerings since last December. Absolutely not 1 exclusive of any type in 2024 is a disgrace. I feel taken advantage of as a consumer & will not be purchasing any future peripherals from Sony as they cannot be trusted to support it appropriately.

    • I second the decision to not purchase Astro Bot until there’s a PS VR2 mode supported. We don’t even need Sense controllers, just enable a VR mode and have us keep the DualSense. Very little work required here.

  • AmazingCass_2019

THANK YOU TEAM ASOBI FOR THIS! AND THANK YOU FOR MAKING IT PS5, not PSVR2, so I can continue to enjoy Astro with my boys! This comes out right before my birthday!!!

    • You and your boys are in for a treat! Team Asobi breathed life into Astro Bot and created one of the best gaming experiences I’ve had the pleasure to take part in with Astro Bot rescue mission.

I’m glad it’s coming to PS5 for people like you and your family. I just wish the VR community would have been included so that the same game could be played in VR like how Gran Torismo is. Same game, just gave us the ability to play it in VR as well.

    • Could have been the best of both worlds by having flatscreen and PS VR2 support, not excluding either. I won’t be buying it in this state.

  • Dear Sony, PSVR 2 support please, or feel free to announce the fully psvr2 rescue mission 2 coming soon !

  • This really needs to be hybrid with PSVR2 support! Please?

Astro and VR go together so well!

  • Psvr 2 support Sony. Come on :( :(

  • Best announcement in ages. My whole family has had more fun with the Playroom PS5 pack in game than any other game in a loooong time. So excited! This is going to sell a ton.
