Astro Bot arrives on PS5 September 6

Join Astro on his own supersized space adventure.

Hi everyone! On behalf of Team Asobi, I have the immense pleasure to unveil our new game Astro Bot coming to PlayStation 5.

A video speaks a thousand words so please check out our first trailer to see the game in action.

Astro Bot arrives on PS5 September 6

Since making an appearance at the launch of PlayStation 5, Astro has introduced many players to the magic of PlayStation. We received a ton of heart-warming comments about how much fun the game was, how it utilized the DualSense wireless controller in fun ways and how it paid tribute to 25 years of PlayStation history. From the bottom of our robotic hearts, thank you very much for all your support!

We listened to your comments and now, Astro is back in a super-sized space adventure, his biggest to date.

This image shows Astro riding his Dual Speeder above the clouds. A flock of pink flamingos fly around him. Poking through the clouds in the distance are mountainous outcrops with green grass and pink trees at their top.

In this brand-new game, you will explore 6 galaxies and over 80 levels in search of Astro’s scattered crew. Hold on tight to your Dual Speeder and dive down to each unique planet, from lush forests, sandy beaches, hot volcanoes to more surprising locations such as a gigantic hourglass or the canopy of a singing tree!

In this image, Astro stands on a lush grassy field. Towering behind him is a thick trunked tree, adorned with a mouth-like cavity and two glowing blue eyes which observe the tiny bot in front of it.

To get help on his mission, Astro can use over 15 new abilities offering unique play styles. As you would expect from an Astro game, these take full advantage of the DualSense controller, its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers so you can feel every little step along the journey. Among the many new powers, you will find Barkster, the Bulldog Booster that lets you air-dash and smash through enemies, metal and glass, the Twin-Frog Gloves that offer long-range punching and the ability to swing and the Giant Sponge that lets you suck up water from the environment to grow huge and cause massive (and slightly moist) destruction. Combined with improved Astro controls, these new powers take the Astro platforming experience to new heights, while remaining accessible for all. We can’t wait for you to get your hands on these and let us know how they feel.

In this image, flexing a pair of green Twin-Frog Gloves, Astro attacks a towering creature that engulfs that majority of the screen.

We also cranked up the number of baddies too with over 70 new types, including massive bosses at the end of each galaxy. Special mention to the deadly cobra queen Lady Venomara who appears in the trailer, waiting for you in her golden lair. Defeating each boss will uncover a wonderful secret but we don’t want to spoil that, so our lips are sealed😊. And for the brave ones of you craving even more challenge, the game comes packed with die-and-retry levels to test your reflexes.

In this image, with a metal rooster clad to his back, Astro Bot observes a mammoth metallic cobra, the tail of which slithers across the platform in front, kicking up dust. Behind that green and gold-bangled body rises the snake’s head.

But that’s not all, during this epic adventure, Astro will reunite with many friends from the PlayStation universe. The trailer shows only a few but we double down on the cast and hope to delight every PlayStation fan out there. And who knows, maybe this time, these characters will play an even bigger part in saving the day?  (wink)

This image is a close up of a winking Astro Bot, who proudly displays a robotic hound who’s positioned on his back like a backpack.

That’s all for now. Thank you for reading. At Team Asobi, we believe in the second-to-second fun and joy of video games. And with this new Astro Bot game, we invested all our love and craft to bring a constant smile to your face, as you run, jump, bop enemies and find the many secrets and jokes we dotted around.  We will be waiting for you on September 6!

This image shows a Kratos-like Bot facing the camera, tightly gripping his Leviathan Axe, which hovers above a tree stump.

We’ll be back soon with more details about the game as well as pre-orders opening up June 7. Until then, power up your DualSense, Team Asobi and Astro are taking you on a PlayStation space adventure to remember!

  • WHERE IS THE PSVR2 SUPPORT?!?? This game SHOULD be in VR! Those are the Astrobot roots!

This also highlights how poor Sony’s support of VR is in general. Where are the first party VR games?

  • I spent so much money on my PSVR2 and I was so hopeful for a sequel to Rescue Mission. This is one of the biggest video game dissappointments to me and I really hope that Sony will release a statement regarding a PSVR2 patch soon…

  • Only good announcement at the State of Play.

  • Not even a port of Rescue Mission to PSVR2?
That is the thanks PSVR2 owners get for wasting 600 euros on your hardware, to not even get a Astro game for it?

  • Please please please add PSVR2 support!!

I totally get why it needs to be a flat version as well but it would be a crime to not add a vr mode given astrobot was born in PSVR1.

  • By the gods we have been abandoned… Sony please are you kidding me? The level design in some of these clips literally look the same as from the first atro bot game on psvr one!!! C’mon man don’t do this to us. You really are going to abandon people who spend 550 dollars on your VR headset? Really??

  • No PSVR2 is criminal. You killed the headset right there. What a waste of £450

  • No PSVR2 support wow that’s a blow appreciate your work and I’m sure Astro will be good but could have been epic in VR sad face

  • Look Sony you made Astro cry no VR support where’s the love boo

  • I am not buying this game unless there is a VR mode

  • First of all, thank you Team Asobi for making one of the best and most joyful games I ever played in 35 years, namely Astro Bot Rescue Mission on PSVR1. I literally played the whole game with a smile on my face.

Thank you for giving us one of the best free tech demos ever made in Astro’s Playroom on PS5, probably still the best implementation of all DualSense features to date.

Thank you for making what looks like an absolutely outstanding new full sized Astro Bot game, I’ll be there day 1 no matter what. I’m sure your team poured a ton of love and hard work into this one yet again.

But I still have to mention, that I’m disappointed that we won’t even get a PSVR2 mode for your next game, because VR elevated Rescue Mission from a very good platformer to one of the greatest games ever in my opinion.
I was so much looking forward to this and it was one of the major reasons I bought the device on launch to show my support to their VR initiative, but it looks like Sony already ditched their 1st party support right after PSVR2 launched, it’s a real shame. I won’t be there day 1 again if PSVR3 ever happens, which I sincerely doubt it will anyway.

Again, thanks Team Asobi for your work <3

  • It not coming to PSVR2 is a disgrace. You guys knew the weight of expectation for it on every single Tweet you ever posted. It could have been a hybrid title. Sony and Asobi should have been clearer and now you’ve really disappointed a community.

  • This is disrespectful to fans of astro bot rescue mission. Not mentioning and adding VR deliberately sounds like an abandonment of PSVR2 by sony…

  • Who do I need to talk to make you understand that PSVR2 won’t succeed if you don’t commit to it. How? Who? Please tell me..

Jim Ryan said the future were HYBRID GAMES, but where are there? This was the perfect game to show us that you actually invested in hybrid first party games..

I hate how SONY always do the minimum to try to push a new gadget/peripheral. Same as Vita..

As I said, I don’t know who I can talk to or who is in charge but those are brainless.

  • Why is this not a game that can be played on PSVR2 and also flat? I get wanting to bring in a wider audience, fantastic idea, but I’m devastated it doesn’t support PSVR2 at all, this could have easily been hybrid.

  • I love my PSVR2 and have been fighting it’s corner but of this doesn’t get VR support it will be a massive kick in the teeth

  • Sony, surely this will be a hybrid PSVR2 – flat screen game, right?

I was so hyped for a second VR AstroBot game, after the amazing Astro Bot Rescue Mission 6 years ago.
So hyped for a next gen PSVR2 Astro Bot game.

  • Game looks great, really feeling the hurt on the no PS VR2 support. Hurt even more seeing all the bosses from the original Astrobot VR game present in this. I’ll take any Astrobot as it’s so much fun and super charming but as many comments have said here, no VR support is No bueno!

  • Please dear Sony ! 🙏 listen to the passion of your community and the ones that have been beating the drums for you to succeed!

  • You gotta wonder who the tonedeaf moron was who decided to not make this a hybrid PS5/PSVR2 game, and to add insult to injury they haven’t even done a simple PSVR2 patch for the original PSVR game.

  • I’m staggered this isn’t a VR game, or at least hybrid. Really sad.

  • Where is PSVR2 support?!? This is a slap in the face of all PSVR2 owners from Sony.

  • Will PSVR 2 support be added to this. We also need a physical copy of the game. It looks fantastic. Also, please.. We need a new PaRappa game. Those are my needs! ;)

  • The lack of PSVR2 support is literally a slap in the face to all users who believed and still believe in VR and Psvr2.

I’m one of them and after playing one of the best VR games that Astrobot was, there’s no way I’m going to play this new chapter in flat screen.

Please, at least CONSIDER adding a VR mode in the future.

  • I agree. Sony doesn’t listen to their fans…at all. They listen to board members. And they want the next Overwatch, or Fortnite. They want LIVE SERVICE games.. Not narrative based campaign games. The sort of games, which made PlayStation who they are today.. They show bow down to Team Asobi for keeping the entire PS brand relevant. These guys celebrate the history of PlayStation and give it some personality. Let’s hope they have some sort of VR mode that is shown off before release. It’s THE game almost every PSVR 2 owner has been hoping for, aside from ports of Blood & Truth, and AstroBot Rescue Mission.

  • Where’s the PSVR2 support?

  • This looks fantastic but to not bring it to psvr2 is a huge mistake, the community love astrobot!
    Please bring this to us.

  • I can’t freaking wait it looks amazing!!! 🤖

  • You had one job Sony….
….bring the joy of ASTROBOT from PSVR to PSVR2 and you failed us it seems!

“Why not ASTROBOTH!!!” As others have said this could and should have been a opportunity to bring more players to PSVR2 through the ASTRO brand with a hybrid version for PS5 that also supports playing in the headset….even if it came with some compromises to the VR experience compared to VR only Rescue Mission (which should have been ported already anyway given how great it was)

What Team Asobi did on PSVR was masterful, and its great to see their creativity on display again here, but what Sony have done to its PSVR2 customer base is shameful….
…..the real RESCUE MISSION begins now….can SONY rescue any good faith back from this VR player!

  • The lack of VR support is a pain for psvr2 supporters.

  • This is just getting ridiculous. Imagine BMW selling you a car but telling you to go get a Mercedes engine for it since BMW won’t be making their own engines. That is what Sony is doing with PSVR2. And am not sure if they will be charging money for this game, but the only reason I played Astro Bot on PS5 was because it was free. Rehashing assets from the older games and not even supporting VR and they want money for it. Just remedial.

  • Please consider making this game hybrid VR. Or at leas a different Astro Bot first party VR title. Don’t leave us PS VR2 owners hanging. It’s fair to say that we expected more first party support considering the price of admission for PS VR2, which was more than a PS5 console itself.

  • GreyMatterShades

    No VR, no sale.

It’s that simple. This franchise had its first hit on PSVR. You even had the gall to show an Aim controller at 2:46 in the trailer while you’re abandoning the fanbase that first supported Astro.

The game looks amazing, but I’ll never buy it without VR support. Patch it in after launch if you have to, but PSVR 2 should have been a part of this announcement, or at least the blog post.

  • As a dedicated PlayStation fan and owner of all PS products, I find it unacceptable that the new Astro Bot game is being developed without VR in mind. This is a huge blow to the VR community, which has been eagerly awaiting new and innovative VR experiences from PlayStation. At the very least, the game could have been a hybrid to cater to both VR and non-VR players. This decision is incredibly disappointing and feels like a step backward. I urge you to reconsider and support the VR community that has supported PlayStation for years.

    • Couldn’t have said it better myself.
      Best comment out here.
What a missed chance not to include VR support

  • Why keep my PSVR2? I am done with the RE games and GT7. All other VR games are coming to Quest. Sony are just setting up PSVR2 for failure.

  • Looks glorious! The best game shown. I cannot wait, this is a day 1 buy. Thank you PlayStation and Team Asobi. Be still my heart.

  • “Listened to our comments” but sadly not about including PSVR2 support? Stoked for a new Astrobot game but not supporting the PSVR2 is a huge and monumental missed opportunity.
This is what the PSVR2 community is asking for.

  • Are you lot mad? Does anyone at Sony realise AstroBot Rescue Mission is arguably the 2nd best VR game EVER made? Such a disservice…

  • Astro Bot looks awesome (as always), but please please make this a hybrid title so it will be available for PSVR2 also…

  • Is this really not going to be on PS VR2? How can this be? I was really looking forward to playing this. This looks like it would be an easy hybrid but this was not mentioned and I am completely baffled as to why.

  • Where is the PSVR2 support ?? What a missed chance this is. I was really looking forward playing this game in VR. Astrobot in VR was the best platformer i ever played. I’m really bummed out by this

  • What about psvr2 support ?

  • No PSVR2. No purchase from me.

  • I’ve been waiting for Astro since PSVR2 launch and this feels like a big slap in the face.

  • I don’t mind that it’s not a PSVR2-exclusive game, but come on, at least give us the option to play it flat or in VR, like Gran Turismo..!

  • No PSVR2 mode = no purchase.

Pilfering us of £500+ then giving us NOTHING in return after the launch titles is absolutely abhorrent behaviour.

Your duty of investment lies further than just producing the hardware. You need to support it for a minimum time. Be it 2yrs or 5yrs.
Like with phones promising “blank” yrs of updates, the next peripheral you release I want EVERY journalist to get you to pledge a number of yrs of support. Otherwise it just be omes grifting.

After Vita and this, I’ll never purchase a playstation peripheral ever again.

  • And what about PSVR2 support? Yesterday I was very disappointed SONY

  • therealdaninski

There is also a PSVR1 headset Done in the middle a little to the right at the same timeframe, I can’t belive this isn’t a hybrid game

  • therealdaninski

Astro Bot is awesome and I know this will be another great game, but I can’t get why this isn’t a hybrid game. It was such an opportunity for Sony since PSVR2 is on sale now.

I realy hope Sony and Asobi read all of the comments here and on Youtube to see how many fans of Astro Bot there is that wants this on PSVR2

  • No mention of Astrobot’s VR heritage??? Rescue mission being one of the best games on PSVR1.

Is PSVR2 really dead? I didn’t want to believe it but there’s no Sony announced exclusives coming and hasn’t been any since launch.
Extremely disappointed in Sony and spending so much on peripheral which Sony have stopped supporting with first party games.
It’s a huge shame as the headset is excellent but I won’t be playing Astrobot if it’s flat only with no VR.
Even a PSVR2 remaster of Rescue Mission would be welcome.
C’mon Sony, if you want people to buy this headset you need to support it with exclusives!!!
