Astro Bot arrives on PS5 September 6

Join Astro on his own supersized space adventure.

Hi everyone! On behalf of Team Asobi, I have the immense pleasure to unveil our new game Astro Bot coming to PlayStation 5.

A video speaks a thousand words so please check out our first trailer to see the game in action.

Astro Bot arrives on PS5 September 6

Since making an appearance at the launch of PlayStation 5, Astro has introduced many players to the magic of PlayStation. We received a ton of heart-warming comments about how much fun the game was, how it utilized the DualSense wireless controller in fun ways and how it paid tribute to 25 years of PlayStation history. From the bottom of our robotic hearts, thank you very much for all your support!

We listened to your comments and now, Astro is back in a super-sized space adventure, his biggest to date.

This image shows Astro riding his Dual Speeder above the clouds. A flock of pink flamingos fly around him. Poking through the clouds in the distance are mountainous outcrops with green grass and pink trees at their top.

In this brand-new game, you will explore 6 galaxies and over 80 levels in search of Astro’s scattered crew. Hold on tight to your Dual Speeder and dive down to each unique planet, from lush forests, sandy beaches, hot volcanoes to more surprising locations such as a gigantic hourglass or the canopy of a singing tree!

In this image, Astro stands on a lush grassy field. Towering behind him is a thick trunked tree, adorned with a mouth-like cavity and two glowing blue eyes which observe the tiny bot in front of it.

To get help on his mission, Astro can use over 15 new abilities offering unique play styles. As you would expect from an Astro game, these take full advantage of the DualSense controller, its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers so you can feel every little step along the journey. Among the many new powers, you will find Barkster, the Bulldog Booster that lets you air-dash and smash through enemies, metal and glass, the Twin-Frog Gloves that offer long-range punching and the ability to swing and the Giant Sponge that lets you suck up water from the environment to grow huge and cause massive (and slightly moist) destruction. Combined with improved Astro controls, these new powers take the Astro platforming experience to new heights, while remaining accessible for all. We can’t wait for you to get your hands on these and let us know how they feel.

In this image, flexing a pair of green Twin-Frog Gloves, Astro attacks a towering creature that engulfs that majority of the screen.

We also cranked up the number of baddies too with over 70 new types, including massive bosses at the end of each galaxy. Special mention to the deadly cobra queen Lady Venomara who appears in the trailer, waiting for you in her golden lair. Defeating each boss will uncover a wonderful secret but we don’t want to spoil that, so our lips are sealed😊. And for the brave ones of you craving even more challenge, the game comes packed with die-and-retry levels to test your reflexes.

In this image, with a metal rooster clad to his back, Astro Bot observes a mammoth metallic cobra, the tail of which slithers across the platform in front, kicking up dust. Behind that green and gold-bangled body rises the snake’s head.

But that’s not all, during this epic adventure, Astro will reunite with many friends from the PlayStation universe. The trailer shows only a few but we double down on the cast and hope to delight every PlayStation fan out there. And who knows, maybe this time, these characters will play an even bigger part in saving the day?  (wink)

This image is a close up of a winking Astro Bot, who proudly displays a robotic hound who’s positioned on his back like a backpack.

That’s all for now. Thank you for reading. At Team Asobi, we believe in the second-to-second fun and joy of video games. And with this new Astro Bot game, we invested all our love and craft to bring a constant smile to your face, as you run, jump, bop enemies and find the many secrets and jokes we dotted around.  We will be waiting for you on September 6!

This image shows a Kratos-like Bot facing the camera, tightly gripping his Leviathan Axe, which hovers above a tree stump.

We’ll be back soon with more details about the game as well as pre-orders opening up June 7. Until then, power up your DualSense, Team Asobi and Astro are taking you on a PlayStation space adventure to remember!

  • Cool to see a new astrobot game! Just picked up a PSVR2 and really hoping this will be VR, as I never got to play the first in vr

  • A thousand words, most of us only were worried about an abbreviation for a few, PSVR2. Even if not a full fledged title at least let the people you hung out to dry a hybrid.

  • I think the decision to not make this support the PSVR2 is a massive slap in the face to everyone of us who invested money on the headset. It’s only a year old and it already feels like abandoned hardware at this point.

I was pretty much convinced this would be the next official first party PSVR2 game, but am now super disappointed instead. Will most likely sell the headset soon since we probably wont get much more from Sony anyways.

    • I’m in the same boat

    • the_blackiechan-

Same here sadly.. there’s literally 5-10 good games to check out that’s it if even. Nothing to really keep you comming back.. I was expecting hybrids of amazing games especially with this hardware. Might as well get a pc almost any game out there has a vr mod for pc there’s no reason Sony couldn’t have done the same. This is jus a nail in a coffin..

    • Couldn’t agree more. Completely disappointed in Sony.

  • Where is PSVR2 support??? How much have us VR owners invested with Sony headsets, console, games to then be treated without having this title in VR.

  • Was really excited for this but disappointed to see no PSVR2 support. Any chance of adding that, even in a future update?

  • There’s really no PSVR2 support? Are you kidding me? Didn’t think Sony could possibly drop the ball this badly. They’ve dropped the ball, tripped over it, fell and knocked teeth out. The ball rolled into the street and got flattened by a car.

  • Incredible oversight not making this a hybrid psvr2 title

  • Well unlike you guys I’m estatic that this one is not a PSVR exclusive. It allows way more players to enjoy it this way

    • I don’t think many were expecting or even hoping for a VR exclusive. They were hoping for it to simply be playable in VR like Gran Torismo, resident evil 4, resident evil 8, No man’s sky etc. There’s literally no excuse not to have an option to play it in VR. The controller doesn’t need to be tracked, so just let the VR players in the game!

  • I’m absolutely buying this………after it gets PSVR2 support….

  • I think Rescue Mission was the last game I replayed before finally putting my PSVR away in favor of the PSVR2, and it was every bit as good the second time. Upon completion, I remember thinking to myself how devastated I would be if it didn’t get a PSVR2 sequel. 😔
I understand it needs to reach a wider audience. Why not a hybrid?

  • Astro is a gorgeous game so I don’t want to take anything away from that but honestly… Where is the PSVR2 version ? This was the GREATEST VR title ever to grace VR 👑 . Why is Sony benching their star player ?

  • What the hell???? No psvr2 support is crazy. The psvr1, ps4 and ps5 all got an astrobot game, and now when another one finally gets announced it’s for ps5 AGAIN? This feels like a slap to the face

  • Psvr2 support is dead and this is sony showing us. Wow. Will never buy a sony product again. Still can’t buy spare controllers BTW. Amazing decision making there sony.

  • I can’t believe how detached Sony is from its PSVR2 community. How they could release a new Astrobot without including VR support is beyond me. This is a game we’ve been yelling from the rooftops for since the launch of PSVR2 and have held on to that dream since. Little did we know that dream would turn into a nightmare.

  • As someone who never got to experience Astrobot Rescue Mission, but had such a great time with Astro’s Playroom, now that I have a PSVR2 I’d hoped to be able to experience the next Astro entry in VR and see what Team Asobi could do with the hardware. This looks like it would be fantastic as a hybrid flat/vr game, real bummer it doesn’t look like it is.

  • the_blackiechan-

No psvr2 support wow.. I won’t be buying. A year in and barley and 1st party psvr2 titles this 550 headset is cooked. What are you doing Sony.

  • Sony, how could you do this to PSVR owners? We’ve anticipated Astro since the launch of PSVR2 and have held on to the dream until now. To have it release for console only with no VR support has not only shattered that dream but turned it into a nightmare! At least the messaging is clear. Sony doesn’t care about VR. We won’t forget this.

  • As a PSVR2 early adopter I’ve been waiting for the next VR AstroBot game. Very disappointed with this decision and it tells me Sony has completely given up on PSVR2. Such a huge bummer as I want to support VR and believed in you guys.

  • Please! Please! release the white and blue controller like the one you showed off in the trailer. Even better make a game and controller combo.

  • The way the game looks, it looks like it could have vr. A lot Of the gameplay looked like Astro bot rescue mission. So it’s possible Sony is being coy on this to stretch out the hype. I will say giant miss if it really doesn’t have vr support.

I will also say, I will after 29 years of being a day one console buyer. I will leave the PlayStation ecosystem if they abandon vr. I am no longer interested in flat games. I’ve been playing flat games for 40 years and they suck compared to vr. Vr is the evolution to keep gaming fresh. Flat games are stale, regurgitated, remakes with different skin.

I may only be one person but I buy 300-500 games every cycle. I also have two children and I also buy multiples of everything. One for each of us, so that money will also go away. Go ahead and stiff me and vr for the casual flat user that buy 10s of games every cycle. I won’t go back to flat just because you may not offer vr anymore, no astrobot scream a lack of confidence in your vr support more than anything else if you ask me, a day one psvr1 user.

As someone who has been one of your die hard supporters since the original ps1. I am disappointed for the first time in the 29 years about the apparent direction Sony is going on the gaming front.

2 games that we already know about is what we get for our yearly e3 presser. Both of which are multi platform. Who cares about the trailers. Trailers are spoilers when it comes to vr. So to me they are worthless. This is E3 time and vr get this weak sauce state of play. After today im not going to defend Sony from the psvr2 is dead people. Astrobot no vr? Is a giant slap in the face and a big big big big big giant mistake from Sony if they are serious about supporting psvr2. It makes one question just how committed they are to vr.

Seems to me the only thing big companies understand is voting with your wallet. My wallet goes wherever the vr markets goes. So if Sony wants to be stupid and drop vr, this will be my last gen buying a PlayStation. I will not buy any of the flat games you just showed, Astrobot included if they don’t have vr. Wake up Sony astrobot vr support should have been a given.

  • Really wish they announced PS VR2 support. The game looks amazing, but I may hold off on playing it in hopes that it will come to PS VR2 at some point. Rescue Mission was a magical gaming experience on PSVR.

  • It’s too much. PSVR2 doesn’t support the sequel to the game that used to be PSVR’s best game. Plus, it’s a first game. I’m sure Sony abandoned PSVR2. First Game + PSVR2 doesn’t support the best hit game? I doubt you’re interested in selling PSVR2. You should apologize to the users who bought PSVR2.

  • We need PSVR2

  • No PSVR2 support for a game whose origins are tied to PSVR, lol. Seriously, Sony?

  • Damn… I’m surprised at half the comments (I mean, mostly led by the same TWO people tbf) whinging about this not being a PSVR2 game. I loved Astro Bot Rescue Mission as much as the next guy (wasn’t looking for it, came bundled with 5 other games Digitally for a STEAL back in 2019 I think it was) but I always wanted, ESPECIALLY after Astro’s Playroom on PS5, a “Normal” Flat/TV Astro Bot game.

PSVR and Rescue Mission was niche to the very nature that PSVR itself was niche, and the PSVR2 is currently even more niche (and hasn’t sold anywhere near as much as OG PSVR afaik) so why make the Full Game of a character/experience that everyone got to experience on their PS5s since Day 1 FOR FREE as PSVR2 experience? Exactly you wouldn’t.

I know it sucks, sure it’d be nice to have a PSVR2 Mode or Option of course but maybe it just wasn’t in the scope or budget of the project? Who honestly knows, but this is the game I always wanted from Team Asobi even when I was playing Astro Bot Rescue Mission on my PSVR on PS4.

Also… Astro Bot started with “The Playroom” on PS4, AT LAUNCH, in 2013 before PSVR was even an idea in Sony’s head 😒 🤦

  • Its just unfair introducing a game exlusively in VR ,and then taking it away from us.
For me this seems as a huge downgrade of the game and i dont want to ruin the experience.

  • “Astro Bot started with “The Playroom” on PS4, AT LAUNCH, in 2013 before PSVR was even an idea in Sony’s head ”

No he didn’t. Those were known as “AR bots”. Astro was officially named for his first full blown game on PSVR 1. The actual character, “Astro Bot” did in fact get his final form and name from his VR outing.

Also, no one expected this to be a VR exclusive game, but heck yeah people were hoping for at least a VR option to play the same game with the same control’s, but in VR. Many 3rd party developers have done this. Yet Sony and their flag ship mascot that did in Fact get his start on their first VR device, can’t be bothered to support their own hardware with an option to play in VR? That’s just disrespectful to their customers that bought in and supported them.

  • Hopefully not mentioning VR support was an oversight? Rescue Mission is still one of my favourite games on PSVR1

  • PSVR 2 or no buy

  • Yeah I’m excited for this but where is the PSVR 2 support? It needs one

  • A perfect game to play with my kid, we can’t wait for September 2024.

  • PSVR2 support 🙏

  • This game needs PSVR2 support please. VR is where Astro started and to not have at least a hybrid VR mode for this game is a slap in the face to a large chunk of your customers.

  • Super excited for this. Glad it’s not VR

  • Hey Sony , we have buy a headset for enjoying and gaming . I confused no VR2 support . I think all Vr2 headset users could buy a Astrobot VR. Come on . It’s not to late

  • I refuse to buy this if it doesn’t include a VR mode. The first game was perfectly made for VR!!!
    PLEASE add PSVR2 support!

  • The community ask , and Sony PlayStation give it .

  • No VR mode feels like a slap in the face to all the fans who have supported this franchise from the begining. WE NEED ASTRO IN VR !!!!

  • codi_in_tha_cave

Psvr 2 headset is to expensive not to have astrobot on it Team Asboi please I will buy two copies tell Sony we need this in vr.

  • codi_in_tha_cave

Psvr 2 please we need it Sony I will fund it myself if money the problem.

  • codi_in_tha_cave

    Nail in psvr 2 coffin

  • Man, i cant wait to play the next entry in my favorite VR game franchise! I bet the VR mode will be so good!

  • This looks awesome. So glad AstroBot gets a big game that can reach the masses. ❤️🎮🤖

  • Unbelievable that you didn’t include VR support. Literally your best PSVR game, and nothing. Why Sony, why?

  • This could have been such a hit on psvr2. I don’t get it. This is sad and disappointing

  • sugarsmooth_umad
